I'm so sorry, Tammy. RIP, Little Girl.
-
Get better soon, Boonie. :D Good luck, DAL!

Oooh this is exciting! My friend's mom makes their dogs' clothes and when I mentioned doggie x-mas hats, she told me she'd ask her mom to make one especially for Rowie! They're already making two others for her dogs so one extra won't be a problem...and for free! There ARE good people left in this world!
-
What an adorable puppy! :iloveyou: It sounds like she found the perfect home!
-
Stunning dog :o ! Congrats!
-
Thinking and praying for you and Pushyc@t!

Just a normal human hat. :D

Poor BK! I hope he's feeling better :( . Rowie once had an aggressive dog bite her ear, but it was over in a manner of seconds.
Sounds like a big decision :-) They all sound like pretty good choices. I would go with either Heidi or Ragu. I think in an earlier post you were really drawn to Heidi, so maybe you want to pick her? She doesn't sound that shy to me. But you're probably not getting a real look at any of their temperments since they're in a shelter situation and except for Ragu, they're still puppies. Can you bring Rowie in and see how she reacts to Ragu and Heidi?
Thanks for answering, Kendalyn. Yes, I was really really attracted to Heidi! I was thinking that too, she's in a shelter and is probably very nervous about it. She was only picked up two weeks ago and isn't very used to it. Thats why I think she'll come out of her shell once she gets used to our house. My mom saw her Thursday and fell in love with her! I'll probably adopt Heidi or Ragu, actually. I could bring Rowie to the shelter, or they could probably bring the two pups to our house or somewhere neutral for them to meet. I'll ask! :)

On Thursday me, Nadooshkinz and a couple of other friends went to visit the BSPCA. Of course, seeing Heidi again made me fall in love with her even more. We stayed there for two hours, so that I could test their temperments and such. Three puppies that caught my eye were Scruff (the really hyper but super-cute one), Heidi, and a older puppy named Ragu (cute name or what? :)). Heidi, I noticed, is very laid back, and is perfectly content to laying down at your feet or jumping all over you to get to the brush in your hand (the ONLY thing they wanted to play with, despite the puppy pen being filled with toys!). Scruff was SUPER hyper, he nipped a lot (he made me bleed last week), and loved being groomed. Ragu was inbetween the two. He was old enough to be taken for a walk so I did, and although he was obsessed with the lead, was okay with it. I kicked a ball around for him, and unlike Heidi and Scruff he actually followed it! He got bored after a few minutes, though. I want to save all three of them, but of course I can't. So I thought up pros and cons for each: Scruff: Scruff is pretty hyper, so Rowie will probably like him a bit more. I'm just scared he'll annoy her with his constant nipping! He reminds me of a younger, male version of Rowie. He'll also grow up to be bigger than Heidi and a bit stockier (judging from his chest width). He'll be a bit harder to handle since he's so hyper and headstrong. Sometimes I don't know if I'll be able to handle one adult dog with very high energy and a small hyper puppy? Heidi: Heidi is going to be very slender and long legged when she grows up. She's very quiet, and going to be very easy to handle. I don't know about her on a leash, but I think she'll be okay to handle. She did nip a bit, but stopped once I took my hand away and said sternly "No". When I sit down, she comes and sits by me or on my lap. She's very quiet, never barks at the other older dogs but is curious and is always looking out of the sanctuary and onto the road. I'm just scared she might be shy when she grows up, since sometimes when I tried petting her face she'd close her eyes and her ears would go back a little. But thats because the people who take care of the sanctuary (the employees) are sometimes mean to the dogs when they bark and yell at them or hit them. :( So I'm sure she'll come out of her shell once she's home? Also, I'm a bit worried she'll be frightened of Rowie. She comes up to Rowie's elbow and Rowie is a high energy dog so I'm a bit scared she might be shocked? I'm not saying this puppy isn't hyper at ALL, because she is. Which puppy isn't? She's just much more laid back than Rowie. Ragu: Ragu is such a sweetie. He walked well on a lead except for biting it a couple of times, and with a slight tug he'll stop sniffing whatever he's sniffing and come running up to you. He's a bit bigger than all of them, so he'd probably come up to Rowie's shoulder. He's outside with the big dogs so I don't think he'll be worried around Rowie. And he isn't considered "pretty", he's pretty normal looking and I don't think anybody would want to adopt the poor dog so if I do adopt him I'd be saving a life-ya know? But I don't want to adopt a dog JUST because I feel sorry for it. Also, he does bark a lot and my grandma is our next door neighbour and HER neighbours had THREE dogs that barked ALL THE TIME and she was sooo glad when they moved out and bringing in a barking dog would just make her go MAD (she already hates Rowie  ). So there you go, of course there were a lot of adults there but I didn't feel like any of them were for me. They brought in this beautiful abused Great Dane. All white, skin and bones, saddest eyes ever. He STILL came up to me and started whining. A Great Dane/Pointer mix that was a BEAUTIFUL merle colour was there too, looked like he was somebody's pet VERY beautiful and sweet. Started whining when I wouldn't pet him! Okay, sorry for all the questions and the long post, this is a HUGE decision!
I researched and looked for almost a year and some people, sadly, spend 5 minutes.
You couldn't be more right! I hate it when people judge a dog by their looks or the behavior of ONE other dog they see. Dogs don't train themselves. My friend wanted a Golden because she saw Rowie, and read only what one dog book had to say about the Golden and was this close to actually getting one! If only she had any idea of the time and effort I put into Rowie to make her such a well behaved dog. Thankfully, she couldn't find any in our area so gave up on the idea of a dog alltogether... If I had a dollar for every time somebody told me Rowie was gorgeous and where can we find one of those? I'd be rich!

please send thoughts and prayers....
Rowie-the-Pooh replied to courtnek's topic in Everything about dogs
I'm so sorry, Court. Sending positive thoughts, energy and prayers your way! -
What I hate is when people meet Rowie, its always "Oh what a beautiful Golden! We're thinking of buying one since they are excellent with kids!" or "Is she going to have any puppies? Can you give us one because we want a dog for the kids" or even "We'd love a GR because they are such lazy dogs!" I wish people would do their research. Its so sad that the Golden is such a popular breed, especially with all those Golden movies being released. I forgot the name, but there are these films about this Golden being able to play basketball or whatever. In the movie his "girlfriend" has puppies and they all end up playing Basketball. So now kids would loooooooove a Golden Retriever like Buddy (I think that was his name?) and get a girl dog so they can have lovely little Buddy Jrs. that will be able to play basketball, soccer and volleyball (not to mention baseball) once they see someone do it-ONCE!

I know I'm a bit late answering this, but just wanted to add my thoughts I have seen great arguments from both sides, but I must say I oppose cropping/docking in non-working dogs. Dogs of different breeds were created to do certain things. The Golden to retrieve, the Great Dane to hunt boars, the Otterhound to track and hunt Otters...etc. Ofcourse, a dog would be injured during the hunt/retirieve/tracking so the tail was amputated to cause less pain, and the ears so that whatever the dog was hunting wouldn't "grab on" to them (from my knowledge). If a dog doesn't work, why do it? I do see the advantage of docking a dogs tail because it wil later on cause pain to the dog, but cropping I just don't see the point of. But Doberfantic made a FANTASTIC point about continuing the dogs heritage...etc. Still I would rather not do it because my dog would not be a working dog. Another thing I've seen come up in many of searches is that docking/cropping causes other dogs to misunderstand dogs that are cropped/docked since they always look alert. I've read it in a book somewhere, can't remember which. Same thing goes to breeds with very long fur that covers the ears/eyes/tail. Other dogs misunderstand them since they are sending confusing messages with the alert ears but kind body posture. Although I haven't seen it in real life so I can't judge... Another pet peeve of mine is when dog books get so opinionated! Like one of my dog books is an Encyclopedia of all dog breeds, and when it gets to any of the cropped/docked breeds it will say "dogs ears have been pointlessly cropped to make the dog look 'vicious'" or "tail has been amputated so the dog will look aggressive". :-? Just my 2 cents!

I agree with Tammy, although we don't have adoption days here (sigh) sometimes its the animal's last chance. But other times the dog will go to an irresponsible home...so I guess it really depends on the group(s) and who is adopting. Another thing I was thinking of about Rescues. What do you think of Rescues that allow three dogs to be adopted out on the same day by the same family/person? I was on this rescue website once, they rescued giant breeds and it seemed more like advertising than rescueing! "Check out the cute Great Dane puppies" or "The Borzio princes". If they want to advertise the breed, fine, but then they had their "success" stories and it would go something like this: (name) came here originally looking for a Great Dane for her family, but fell in love with a Boerboel and so took home both a Great Dane and a Boerboel!" or "Although (name) told us she knows nothing about Bullmastiffs, we educated her on the breed and told us to e-mail us with her questions". Also, they had nothing on their page about a spay/neuter agreement, or a return policy. It was very upsetting. :-? What do you guys think? Edited to add: There were a whole lot of families that left the Rescue with three dogs. Usually a puppy and two adults. I think getting two dogs (if your ready, that is) at the same time is okay, but THREE? And not to mention, the Rescue did this a lot...

33 years old! I think they meant 3, right? :o Anyway, he's a cutie!
Good luck Rowie!! Hopefully you'll have a new puppy in the house sometime soon!
Thank you R&C! :D My mom was supposed to talk to me about it this morning, but she was late for work so she'll tell me after her Reiki class which ends in about half an hour. I'm so nervous!
My boys are Carolina Dogs, which are in the Sight Hound and Pariah Dog group in the UKC.
Oh no wonder! I know Caroline Dogs and they look a alot like Heidi. But I doubt she is one or a mix because of where we live (no where NEAR the USA ). She'll most probably be a Saluki mix or something of that sort since we have mostly Saluki's wandering around. :( UPDATE: We're thinking very seriously of adopting Heidi! I will know the answer when my mom decides tomorrow morning. I won't be able to sleep tonight! :D

Rowie-the-Pooh replied to a topic in Everything about dogs
Only one dog, Rowie. Rowie (aka Rooroo, Rowie-the-Pooh, roorie, girl ) Bought from a man who was selling her because he was leaving the country and his wife had allergies. Came home July 12, 2003. The love of my life and has taught me almost everything about owning a dog :D. Our two budgies: Momo and Bobo (aka...nothing really) Female and male budgies, given as a gift on my birthday May 22, 2002. I did not chose the names  -
What mix are they Rowie? Heidi almost looks exactly like Rusty and Chip's sister, just more furry. All those puppies are adorable!
I have no idea, R&C. But Heidi's face looks a lot like a Saluki's or any other sighthounds. Well thats the first thing I thought when I saw her face! What breed are your doggies? :D Thanks everyone for the nice comments!
I never asked any of mine how they felt about other dogs coming in. Kinda like The Brady Bunch, they knew "it was much more than a hunch... that this group must somehow form a family... that's the way we all became" The HF Bunch (la la la... remember the song?). They didn't have much choice but to put up with other dogs. :P You know, if I send you a handful of my dogs, I'll concede and be outdone. You win! When would you like them? I'll line them up and let you choose. *snicker* Rowie, Heidi is lovely. She looks just like this dog that wandered up in our yard several years ago and we used to leave food out just because she always acted like she was starving and was so thin. She stopped coming around and we found out later she was shot and killed. Apparently, a guy was hired by a landowner around here to ride this neighborhood and shoot any loose dogs. Same thing happened with a beautiful brindle Pit Bull we were kind of taking care of (girl just wandered up one day while I was mowing grass... I happened to look down and this dog was just following right along step for step as if it were a walk... we called her Sneakup). The guy would shoot loose dogs, even dogs in their own yards, and throw the bodies on a trailer and haul them off, like it was a hunt or garbage pickup or something. The whole point is that Heidi looks just like one of those dogs. It makes me sad again just thinking about her. Not trying to hijack the thread. Heidi is really lovely. Doesn't it make you wish you could save them all?
HF, that's horrible! I can't imagine shooting an innocent, sweet little puppy! And a Pit, too. I'm not surprised. :( I wish I could save them all! I definately have the yard space, but mom is giving me a hard time just trying to adopt Heidi. Maybe after a couple of years, I could just build this huge palace just for the stray dogs over here...*sigh* One can dream...

Rowie's offleash when in our yard, but outside is leashed 100% of the time. Unfortunately, we don't have ANY dog parks or ANY large unfenced areas for her to run in so she'll have to do with the yard now. Court, the laws are the same here, except if the dog is wearing a collar he/she will be taken to the BSPCA. But if no collar is found on the dog than they shoot it. I remember I used to take horse riding lessons a few years back, and one of the stable owner's GSDs was shot because she had no collar on. That was a sad, sad day. :(

...with Heidi! I went to the BSPCA today, and I can't stop thinking about this beautiful puppy. There were plenty of beautiful older doggies, yes, but Heidi stole my heart. She was the first to welcome me when I went into the puppy pen, she took treats from my hand much more calmly than the other pups, and then proceeded to crawl into my lap! There were four puppies there. Bubbles, Sasha, Heidi, and Scruff. Scruff nipped me and drew blood ( :-? ), Sasha was way too nervous and timid, and Bubbles was sooo tiny! Heidi was lively, energetic, and had this sparkle to her eyes. Would you like to meet her and the other pups? I know you want to Okay first and foremost, Heidi.
