Yay for adopting!! Hope the little boy gets better soon.

That's bad news DP. :( Whether your dog is a mutt or a purebred, I think the most important things are the genes of the parents, and their parents, and so on. Bad genes= bad pups and good genes= good pups. The most important thing is EXTENSIVE RESEARCH before you even think about breeding. :evilbat:

awww come on Hobbit, you've got a good chance of taking BIB :P -
I have a Halti for BK- it doesn't close his mouth like the GLs. Everyone who sees it thinks it is a muzzle and they pull their dogs closer to them, or cross the road- BIG VICIOUS DOG APPROACHING...

The shelter where I got Blitz www.lostdogs.com.au is where I also tried to volunteer and couldn't because it was too sad. So I donate food and blankets and things. They have a good setup going, they have separate sections for lost puppies, lost dogs, puppies up for adoption, and dogs up for adoption. The lost puppies all play together but everyone else is in separate pens/kennels outside, with sunlight and protection from the elements, which have an elevated bed and fresh water. Sick dogs I think are housed inside at the vet clinic until they are well enough to go up for adoption. They all get walked at least once a day and walking takes place on the grounds. It is one of the city's major shelters so they are a kill shelter  , I think every dog gets 2 weeks. Every dog goes through an evaluation/temperament test and all are spayed/neutered before becoming available. There is also a cat shelter on the other side of the complex but I don't know much about that.

I think it's just really sad that bad breeding and bad owners can harm the reputations of great dogs- like the APBT and other bull breeds, Dobermann, GSD, Rottweiler... obviously we can see it most with the APBT but even very stereotypically happy go lucky dogs like Dals, Labs and Goldens will be nippy and a nightmare to own if poorly bred and given to the wrong types of owners. Australian Cattle Dogs are not recommended for first time owners nor owners with small children, because of their dominant personalities, high energy, and tendency to herd and nip. Though I would not trust a child under, say, 7?? with any dog to be alone together, I know BK, and while he has a typical ACD personality the one thing he has in spades is tolerance. With small dogs and with children. I have seen him obey a 4 year old's commands- the funniest thing I'd seen for a long time was this tiny kid saying "sit down dog!!" and BK just sitting for her- I was impressed.

:( It's not your fault Doc... you can't be a person's keeper forever and you can't take responsibility for other people's actions, however tragic they may be. You did what you thought was the best thing at the time. I am sorry that it has turned out like this. But those owners will get their bad karma ten times over.

:( poor Zebra, hope he gets better soon.

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/National/story_34897.asp Dingo attack prompts new warning A new dingo attack has prompted a fresh warning to visitors to Queensland's Fraser Island to be very wary of the animals. Authorities say a British woman was nipped by an adult male dingo last weekend as she was retreating to her vehicle near Yidney Rocks, on the island's eastern shores. "The woman suffered only a slight bruise and grazing but it amply demonstrates visitors to Fraser Island should be wary especially this time of year," Queensland Environment Minister Dean Wells said. Mr Wells said visitors should be aware the dingoes were now entering the mating season which coincided with the Easter camping period and lasted until the end of May. "Adult dingoes are quite defensive of their territory and their pack at this time," Mr Wells said. The dingo involved in the incident would be destroyed by park rangers because it displayed a reduced fear of humans and could pose a danger in the future, Mr Wells said. Authorities were forced to address the issue of visitor safety to the island two years ago after the mauling death of nine-year-old Clinton Gage. The state government ordered a cull of the island's dingo population, fenced off camping areas and imposed hefty fines for feeding the animals. But despite the precautions the attacks continued, including one on a German tourist who was dragged along the ground by a dingo before fighting it off with a stick last June. Mr Wells said Fraser Island rangers had reported an increased number of minor interactions between dingoes and people in recent weeks. "Parents should not leave young children unattended and visitors should stay in groups," he said.

LOL I have a Halti that I used to use on BK. He hated it and would spend most of the time trying to get it off (though he still got excited to see it coming out of the drawer because it meant we were going out). But it made him behave. :D I am thinking of going back to it as he is beginning to be a little tyrant on the correction chain again. :-?

I'm sorry to hear Daisy is not well again... I don't have any suggestions but I do feel for you.

I think it was last year when I was at the park with BK and he started screaming like a banshee and limping- he'd hurt his hind leg, maybe pulled a muscle or something. I panicked and picked him up intending to go straight home and make him rest, and in the confusion I dropped my keys only realising when I got to the car that I had lost them... so I went back and combed the park for them (and it is a BIG park) in vain while Mr Drama Queen happily ran around not showing any signs of limping (I got mum to come and give me her key to the car in the end). It cost me a bundle to get my keys recut too! :-? :drinking:

This also applies to (bench/show) Kelpies from Australia and Kelpies from the US- there is no way either would win any prizes in either country (I think there is a thread on this). Actually almost any breed bred in different countries are going to be different, depending on what the standard is in that particular country.

I spent $20 last year on a flavoured nylabone for the monster and it is still sitting in the backyard untouched... BK does not like to chew things that he is ALLOWED to chew except real bones dammit!!! He prefers fences... hoses... my watch... concrete... tins... the axe... plastic milk bottles... my clothes...
