1. Also, if the cut is more like a puncture, or hole, try not to let it scab over, but keep it "open", as infection can build underneath and cause an abcess.
2. Since she has long fur, it might be a good idea to shave out a little area around the cut, so the fur can't pick up debris or get in the cut and make it dirty. We use a 1/2 peroxide, 1/2 betadine mix on our dogs if they get cuts, but some people won't use peroxide because it can kill both healthy and bad bacteria/skin. You might want to call your vet and see what they say to use on it.
3. We have a cat and four dogs... he was about 2 yrs old when we got the first dog (age 8 months), and probably around 8-9 when we got the other 3. He is also the resident "bad*ss" and doesn't hesitate to put the dogs in their place. He and the first dog used to play all the time, he'd jump on her head and dig his claws behind her ears as she flung her head all around (yes, we're sure it was play  ), and they'd both "bat" at each other with their paws. After the other dogs came(ages 10months, 1.5yrs, and 2yrs), Goo (dog) became less open about playing (she doesn't exactly like sharing the house with the other dogs, but it's also not a major issue), and a little more "possesive" of her cat. Occasionally one of the other dogs will chase him, or growl at him. When that happens, Goo starts carrying on and barking, and usually "tramples" the offending dog (or sometimes just moves between the and the cat, and barks loudly in their face :o ) giving the cat plenty of time to escape (not that he needs the help). The cat has also been known to "break up" rough play when Goo is involved... he hops down onto her opponent and Goo takes advantage of their surprise  . When we introduced Goo to the cat, we first used a babygate to seperate them so that they could sniff, see other, etc, but not hrt each other. Once they seemed pretty comfortable, we took down the babygate and just corrected verbally if Goo got out of hand/with a squirt bottle if the cat did. They didn't start playing until several months later. The other dogs were just brought into the house, and let to roam around (they're all relatively small; 12lbs, 11 lbs, and 35 lbs) with verbal corrections for the dogs if they got out of control. The cat also does/did his fair share of "whipping the crew into shape" , and they all have a healthy respect for him. If you are going to get a cat while you have your greyhounds (or any sighthound), you have to be careful, because some are so prey driven that when they see a cat running through the house/yard it's enough for them to want to chase/kill it. Thats not to say that it can't/won't work, but you may need to use a little extra caution.
4.
Thank you for the update. MAN that p*** me off. How is your friend taking it? Does it matter to her that she's in your custody???
She was upset, but I'm not sure whether it was more because the dog was so sick, or whether it was because my mom yelled at her for not taking care of her. She went home to get the insulin before we left, and I had to go get her because she took so long... when I got there she was arguing with her mother over whether or not she took good care of the dog (my mom called her house and asked her mom, and even her mom admitted that she wasn't doing things when they needed to be done). Then she didn't want to go with us to the vets because she didn't want to be there if she had to be PTS... I know different people deal with things differently, but if it was my dog that this had happened to, there would be no way of keeping me from going, especially if I was afraid she was going to be PTS. My mom told her that Haley either needs to stay here so she can be sure she's taken care of, or at the vets, so she didn't even argue. Then today, she didn't even call to see how she was until 3:30 this afternoon. I think that she does miss Haley, but at the same time, she's kinda glad to not have to worry about taking care of her.
5. We took Haley to the vets about two weeks ago for a checkup, and she was doing much better, had gained almost 2 lbs, and had a lot of her energy back. The vet said she seemed to be back to normal again, and that we could go back to our once a month visits... last night I came home from my aunts and Haley was here, looking like a little skeleton again. It appears that her owner had fallen off her insulin/feeding schedule again (from how bad she looks, maybe even skipped some things completely), and just last night decided that Haley was sick enough that she needed to go to the vets. The dog was breathing funny, shivering, and wouldn't move out of the little ball she was curled in. We ended up having to go to the 24 hr vet place, since it was 11 pm, and my mom spent almost $100 (not as much as it could have been, but that's still a lot for nothing) just for the vet there to tell her that Haley was severely malnourished and needed to be put back on her schedule for insulin/feeding. Her blood sugar levels were fine by that time, though we think they had been a little high earlier (it took us over an hour to get to the vets). We ended up bringing her home, and then my mom took her in to her normal vet today, he said it would take probably a month to get her healthy again, and raised her insulin a little. Haley has to stay with us for at least a couple weeks, and my mom is really thinking about finding her another home. In the meantime, we're doing the "dog juggling" act, with five dogs (and a cat) in the house.
6. As soon as I know when the people are coming/how long they're going to stay, I'm going to ask my aunt about Goo (my aunt doesn't really like Goo, so I know she won't want her there for longer than a couple days). If she says it's ok, then I'll try to take her to visit a few times before we actually stay there. We (me, my dad, sister, aunt, and a few others) have talked to my mom dozens of times about getting in too deep with this chat stuff, but she just brushes us off, and says the people are fine. She is determined to have them come here (when I asked her about what my dad had said when she told him, she told me she didn't care what he said :o and they were coming anyway) . My mom is careful about Goo, and won't let her out around the people, so the chances of her biting anyone are slim to none, but I don't like the idea of shutting her up in my room for longer than usual (although I'm not real excited about socializing with the people  , so I'll probably be in the room with her quite a bit). I have a lock on my door, so if I keep the key with me, everything should be pretty safe in there. This whole thing is a little over the edge for me though, my mom gets sorta bent out of shape when we have family coming to visit, and we rarely have cookouts/parties because "she doesn't want to deal with it". Now she's going to have a bunch of people coming to stay, and they're having a "picnic" :o  . And it doesn't help that the people who visited last summer were a little scary themselves; the husband was an alcoholic (his wife told him that he couldn't have any beer before 11am, and he drank nonstop after that), and was just plain creepy, and the wife was sorta strange. Not to mention that my dad, my friend, and I planned to take Goo and go out fishing, but at the last minute the husband asked to go out with us and my mom insisted that he be allowed to go, so poor Goo had to stay home, and we had to listen to him complain the entire time because he wasn't catching anything/was tired of being out there :x . They also spouted some of the typical anti-pit bull propoganda, which I (barely) ignored... so I guess I am carrying a bit of a grudge against the "computer people"
7. My mom has decided that she's going to invite a bunch of people from a chat room she "visits" to our house for a get-together. She hasn't told me much about it, but from what she's said, some of them are going to be staying in hotels, and some here ( :o ). She actually mentioned something about letting some of them stay in my room, but there is no way that people I've never even met are going anywhere near my room. Anyway, I'm a little worried about what I'm going to do with Goo while they're here... last summer a couple (husband and wife) of the people came here to visit with her, and I just kept Goo on-leash in a tight heel when they were around, but we also spent a lot of time going places with my dad (who was not thrilled by the people staying with us) and out in the yard, then when I couldn't pay close attention to her I put her in my room and locked the door. The thing is though, that there were only two people here then, and there's going to be a lot more this time, so there probably won't be too many chances for her to be with me in the house (so many people, I won't be able to watch her, and them  ). I'm also a little "disturbed" that there's going to be a bunch of strange people staying in my house (my mom met a bunch of them someplace last year, but still), and my aunt offered to let me stay at her house (across the street from us), but I doubt if I can take Goo there, and I don't think it's fair to Goo to leave her here to be stuck in the room while I go someplace else. I'm not even sure how she'd act if my aunt did allow her to come with me (she likes my aunt and her BF, and takes traveling well, so maybe...), so that might not be the best option. I'm still not even sure when they're coming (she said they're not really sure, but that they're going to have a picnic ( ), so I'd imagine it will be in spring/summer, but I just want to plan ahead so I don't have to make plans at the last minute.
8. Go out and buy a small rug or piece of carpeting (big enough for her to lay/sit on) and teach her to sit/stay or down/stay on it when you say "rug". Then when you're eating, just tell her to get on the rug, and you can eat in peace. Afterwards, maybe give her a treat (something from her regular diet) or bone so she knows she's not really missing out. If you can't or don't want to try this, you can also just put her in a down/stay while you eat (it's easier to keep her away if she has a "target" to stay on though  ), put her on a tie-down, or in her crate with a bone. As for the food snatching, just don't leave it down where she can get it  or you can try squirting her when she tries.
9.
But I have seen that whites get sunburned more easily and have more sensitive skin in general. Sunburning may not be a problem if you do not live in a hot climate . If you keep your pet indoors all the time it is still a problem if you decide to go spend the day out with you and your dog on a sunny day at the lake or something like that. >>>>>>>> I know with Dacshunds you would not want to breed a dapple to a dapple and with Aussies You would not want to breed a merle to a merle.
There is also some speculation as to whether white APBTs and boxers have a higher incidence of skin cancer (more boxers than APBTs) because of the lack of melatonin (I think that's what it's called  ). And even if you don't live in a hot climate, you/your dog can still get sunburned... as long as you have sun. In dachshunds, there is a lot of debate over double dapples, as well as dapple-pies (dapplexpiebald).
10. I haven't heard anything about fake ACOs, but I have heard that they do regular "runs" of the neighborhoods and collect any "pit bulls" they see that are not in compliance with the "rules"
11. What I don't like is how since it's a lab, they considered it "protecting the dog", whereas if it had been a bully breed, it would be more like "aiding a criminal"
12. Check your local/state laws before you even bother buying a treadmill... in a few states they're considered dog fighting paraphenilia, and having one is proof enough to take your dogs. Also, some dogs won't run on them. Here's a site for Grand Carpet Mills, which are fairly cheap. You can also make your own, but I can't find the site that had the instructions on it.... http://www.grandcarpetmill.com/
13. The dog ended up biting 3 people... http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/023/metro/Dog_s_faked_death_leads_to_jail_term+.shtml
14. Maybe he's eating too much at once? How many times a day do you feed him? If you're already feeding him more than once, and he "gulps" big mouthfuls of food at a time, you might want to try sticking a 2-3" rubber ball into his food bowl with his food... he won't be able to bolt down big mouthfuls, because the ball will be in his way, and it may slow him down a little. This only works for some dogs though.
15. People like this don't deserve to have kids OR dogs... http://www.wthr.com/Global/story.asp?S=1103425&nav=9TaiDd2o
16.
You are right but only partially the dogs back then were well bred and cared for dogs, highly trainined and socialized. the dogs that are being spoke of in these news reports are anything but these are currs and mutts poorly bred and rarely trained to even come on command. You cannot compare these dogs to a proper APBT even remotely. would you compare your house cat to a lion. only in the most basic senses, they are dogs and the have tails thats about it. A well bred APBT is worth its weightin solid platinum, the dogs in these stories really should be euthanized, they have no fear or respect for humans and as such are a danger to anyone they encounter.
I think you missed the point I was trying to make  La Duenda has said in other posts that it's "normal" and maybe even "desireable" for APBTs to be so dog aggressive that they'll mutilate themselves in an attempt to get to the other dog... which contradicts with the way APBTs seemed to be in the past (dogs that were able to control themselves around other dogs, maybe not even care about them, but yet wouldn't turn down the chance to fight if faced with it). I wasn't even thinking about the dogs that make the headlines, as those are a completely different "thing", and many of them aren't even pit bulls.
17.
It is actually the misguided public who is responsible for the BSL. Dog fighting was around 100 years ago and you never saw them attacking people then.It is the street thugs who make them man agressive who are to blame for that problem as well. The general public does not realize that dog agression and human agression are not one in the same. If some Apbt got loose and grabbed their dogs then the Apbt's owner should be held accountable as the dog should never have been loose. Another thing is that if they did get loose and grab their dogs and the kid got in the middle the Apbt would not bite the kid the Border collie would out of fear. Once the Apbt grabs the other dog he is not going to let go and grab the kid if he goes for a better hold he knows which thing is the Animal and which is a human. The border collie on the other hand would most likely be yipping and triny to slash anything it can and it will bite the kid and the owners of the border collie would never admit that their dog bit their own kid . Rescued former fighting dogs are not dangerouse to the public they know very well the difference between a child and another animal something that most breeds do not know. Remember that when dogfighting was legal the handlers had to get into the pit with them and release them from their holds so they could scratch again the dogs did not bite the handlers even in the heat of battle. Also a lot of those famouse dogs of the past went home into the house with their families. All dogs were genetically engineered in way or they would all be wolves all breeds have been selectively bred for the purposes the were created for that is why Labradors and newfies have webbed feet. Wolves like to eat sheep sow how did the border collie naturally become a sheep herder? All breeds of dogs were created or at least selectively bred by man.
It's interesting that you brought up how APBTs have been around for over 100 yrs, and have always been this dog aggressive, yet never caused any problems. From what I understand, very few dog owners in the early 1900s leashed their dogs, and quite a few people/families owned pit bulls, so how did they all get by without their dogs killing other peoples' dogs? Things like that seem to make the principle that APBTs have always been so dog aggressive a little harder to believe, or maybe people just had better control of their dogs during that time? I'm not pointing fingers or trying to start a fight here, and may be completely lost in my thoughts, but it's just something I've been thinking about for a while now. Also, you can't place all the blame for pit bull attacks on the "street thugs who make them man aggressive"... how did they get the dogs in the first place? And many people who I've talke dto about the difference between dog aggression vs human aggression believe that even if the dogs aren't human aggressive, but will only attack/kill other dogs, they still have no place in civilized places. People don't like anything that could harm/kill one of their family, and as some people consider their dogs their family, they will always have a problem with dogs that show blatant aggression, whether it be towards dogs or humans.
18.
Another method is to cover the face so that they cant see what you are about to do
I do this with the 3 little dogs when I clip/grind their nails, it seems like some dogs get all stressed out as soon as they see the clippers heading toward their toes, so it calm them down when they can't (it doesn't work on all dogs though). You can either have someone else hold her while you clip, muzzle her and tie off her head so she can't turn into you, or find something to distract her while you clip them one-a few at a time. I use peanut butter on a plate as a distraction, and tape it to the wall a little higher than they normally hold their head. Also, you don't have to make the nails actually bleed for them to hurt sometimes, the squeezing action of the clippers can cause the nail to "squish" a little and pinch the quick, causing pain.
19.
Personally I'm not sure. Doesn't a gentle leader address the problem in a way by removing the result the dog wants? The dog pulls to go forward, but the GL makes it so nothing happens other than turning his head, right? It's an option I'm considering. My boy is very sweet and pretty well behaved but at 5 months he's well into the 70 lbs and as a Great Dane, growing every day. He's normally good on a leash, but when another dog is around or he is really wound up, he pulls. I can't hold him back very well and it's very slippery here so I do worry about falling. We use the command "no pull" but honestly I think he thinks that I'm the one pulling! I certainly wouldn't use it right off if there weren't any problems. I think my opinion is a little skewed by having such a big dog. As much as you think you prepare, it's hard when you realize that your dog can pull you, sit on you and you can't get up, etc LOL.
Well, it "controls" the problem, because most dogs can't pull with a head collar on. At the same time though, it's almost setting yourself and your dog up for a "dependence" on the collar, because as soon as you take it off, he'll likely be right back to pulling on the normal collar. That's not to say that they don't make good tools for control in certain situations, or until the dog is fully trained, but unless you're planning on using them for the dog's entire life, you still (probably) need to do some retraining on the flat collar. I see your point about him being so big and so young, and it would make sense in your case to use one for control until he's trained to work even in distractions. As long as someone sees the GL type collars as what they are - tools, the same as prong collars, choke collars, or any other training device, I don't have a problem. It bothers me though when they put the GL on their dog because it pulls, then never bother to teach it not to pull, simply because it doesn't pull when on the GL. (I'm not sure if that made any sense at all  )
20. I'm not sure of any of the specifics, as this was on another board, but I'll see what I can find out.
21. They musta forgot this one... When you go for a walk, and 10 people stare and ask "who's walking who?" or comment "boy, he's sure taking you for a walk".
22. Am I the only one who thinks that too many people are using those halter type collars as a "crutch", and not bothering to actually train the dogs? I know that like any training tool, they can be overused, but so many people think they're the "cure-all" for every dog. It's annoying when everytime a dog has any sort of problem, people suggest GLs as a way to "fix" the problem. Sure, they work great on some dogs, and some problems, but they don't replace training. I'm not anti-GL or anything (I use a head collar type thing on Goo when I let my nephews train with her outside, because it makes it easier for them to get her attention), but I don't like to see people brush their dog's problems "under the rug" and not bother to actually try and fix them :madgo:
23. Crosspost........ National Geographic sent camera crews to the ADBA Nationals and filmed our dogs doing something positive, made people stand in line to sign releases to be filmed, and now they won't air the show. I guess 'pit bull attacks' are more bankable for them. Here is a copy of a reply sent back after they were questioned about airing the segment. Thank you for contacting the National Geographic Channel. Due to several changes and other factors, this program about pitbull terriers has been canceled and is no longer in production. I apologize for this inconvenience and if you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us. Thank you, Dana Fragnoli NGC____________________________________________________ Help shape our future programming! Join National Geographic Channel's Viewer Advisory Panel at www.insightexpress.com/s/bda47326.asp I think we should all write them and request that they air some positive pit press for a change! Maybe they would change their minds if they got enough emails and phone calls. I, for one, am blocking that channel off my cable til they make some changes! This is the typical media bullsh*t we always see with this breed, we can't air it unless it's bloody. Another contact is comments@natgeochannel.com YIB
