She broke out in lumps from the new food? How was she on the BARF? Have you considered switching her back? My dogs are both apples, they are the apple of my ey!!! Oh now that was seriously BAD! :cunao:
-
Or Bones And Raw Foods - depends on who you are talking to. Hows she going on it?
-
Cats are a lot harder to switch to BARF than dogs! We got lucky, our Siamese wont eat anything but his BARF now! And crunching on those chicken wings does wonders for his breath.

Yay Indie! :D Thanks Malamum, I didn't get a proper look because my computers being stupid!! I saw Indie though  They do look similar though, run by volunteers, christmas partys and low prices! Its good, dog training should not only be fun for the dogs, but for the owners too. I used to go to training (years ago) with this guy out of town. He used to train police dogs and was very fond of the check chain and looked down on reward training. Classes were $5 a day and there were no socialisation periods, you'd take your dog, pay $5, do some heeling etc and drive 15 minutes home again. Every body at this club is friendly and you can tell the positive atmoshere from the dogs willingness to learn. Lily never would have gotten over her aggression problems at the old place, but thanks to these guys I can trust Lily around other dogs now and even watch her play. She's doing great. Tessa on the other hand, is still afraid of obedience due to the heavy hand she experienced at the old club :-?

LOL, yes, but I love rats  Rowie, if you think you can handle it I have a post in the pictures section warning about a cuteness over load, I suggest you look there if you dare! :o
-
lol, STRAIGHT into the controvercial topics eh? Well I hate to say it, but I don't think she's coming back! Pity that, it really sounds like she needs all the help she can get! :o
-
LOL, my friend is named Katie and she is also VERY foward!!! Maybe it is a name thing  I go the same as Aonir - not copying but they are just the traits I like in dogs. I think the rest can be dealt with, but friendliness, willingness to please and playfulness are all inborn traits that make dog owning fun! :D
-
Oh no but you can't post pics!!! You saw how mental and ga ga I went from just seeing the belly!! Oh, please don't do it to me!!! If you post pics then I'll have to look, and if I look I wont be able to forget, and if I can't forget I wont be able to study!!! We can't have that now, can we? :o  Oh I'm very happy for you, you must be stoked. What have you got planned for the pups? Do you do sledding with your dogs or am I mixing you up with some one else? I'm sure these pups will have a great future ahead of them!
-
Oh, he was IN the trophy!!! How cute!
-
Good for you Pitgal!!! I understand that poor man, I'm not mentally ill but still if some one were to take my dogs from me I don't know how I'd cope. There have been times in the past where my dogs have been the only thing that have kept me going from one day to the next, they are like my children. These laws need to be faught not only for the breed itself, but for the people who own and love them, they need to be kept in mind also before having there dogs brutally killed.

If you're having trouble with one dog DON'T bring another one into it!!! Not even in hopes that you might solve the first dogs problems, it is just as likely that the new dog will see what Coal is doing and copy, then you will have twice the problems!!! When we got Donna Lily was stoked. Yeah they play and wear each other out, but now we have two dogs digging in the garden, two dogs running around crazy when its walk time, two dogs running around the house and back yard destroying things and these two DO HAVE RULES!!! But Lily is just happy to have an accumplice in evil, her behavior isn't any better, the only difference is that now there are two dogs getting up to mischeif, not just one. As for the teeth, he may have lost all his baby teeth, but the adult teeth are still growing and so his gums will still be sore. You had Hazel on a BARF diet didn't you? Donna is on a BARF/Kibble diet at the mo, and the daily bones does wonders for her teething troubles, she hardly chews a thing. Maybe you could try that with Coal?

I agree with Malamum that there do need to be good breeders out there breeding for "pet quality" dogs. A lot of people will sooner buy from a puppy mill then a shelter, isn't it better that they have the option of pet quality pups from a good breeder that values health? A lot of breeders strive so hard for the breed standard they forget about the breeds health. Although I do believe that "pet quality" breeders that strive for health and well being have their place, I also believe that they should breed pups to resemble the breed standard as closely as possible (this isn't directed at you Proud - it sounds like your dogs are good, but just not champion standard)... I see ALOT of dogs every day that are obviously pure bred but they don't look any thing like they are supposed to!!! Do you have any idea how many people tell me that Lily is small for a boxer? "She's NOT small" I tell them "She matches the standard, its just that OTHER PEOPLE don't breed their dogs well and every other boxer around this town is too BIG!!!"... Well, nearly every one, there are one or two outstanding boxers around here that are actually quite similar in size to Lily (keeping in mind Lily is a bitch). about 9 out of 10 boxers I see from day to day are tall, skinny and have tiny little heads - they could NEVER make it in the ring. I don't know where these dogs are coming from, but I'd presume they are from these numberous unregistered boxer ads that keep popping up in the paper! I doubt they have any any form of health check or that any of their ancesters have faced the ring for generations. So I guess what I am saying is, there is a place for breeding "pet quality" dogs, but the breed standard must always be a guide to what you are breeding, otherwise you end up with a whole heap of mongrel looking dogs which make the true pedigrees keep people guessing as to "what esle" they've got in them!!! :o Its sounds like you are doing a good job though Proud, I must say I was releived when I heard you're not breeding labs of German Shepards etc, keep up the good work. :D By the way - Sanvean, what type of person could give up a life time companion for a boyfriend who just as likely as not wont even be around in a few months? I remember when I was going to get Lily, I went out to see her at the breeders and went home as I wasn't going to get her till the next week. I told my boyfriend at the time about this pup that had stolen my heart and he more or less threatend to beat me if I got her, it was either him or the dog. Well you all know which one I chose! :P
Wasn't it a Pap that won the Westminster 2-3 years ago? I remember how pretty that little guy was and seeing him so proud of himself sitting inside the trophy.
Whats the Westminter? I don't know but whatever it is I'm sure that boy looked very cute and very proud indeed!!! (I can picture it now, a cute little Pap next to a trophy!)
-
Rowie I'm the same!!! I have Pap pictures ALL over the desk top, I just can't get enough!!!! Wether they be puppys or seniors they are all just too cute!!! Still havn't been able to find a rescue one for me though :( Naw, I want a cute little Pappy to sleep in my bed and snuggle up to all night!!!

You don't sound like a BYB to me, you actually sound like you have a passion for what you are doing and that is fine. What I have a problem is is when people go to the local pet shop or buy a pure bred pup on a whim and then decide "Oh, I have a pure breed! Better breed it then!" and produce a litter of unhealthy pups that more likely than not will end up at the pound or have unhealthy litters of their own, which then in turn have unhealthy litters etc all due to irresponsible breeders who don't care for the betterment of the breed and sell their pups to others with the same attitude. Like I said, the number of dogs put to sleep each year is NOT getting smaller and people with attitudes like these don't help one bit. I suggest in addition to all the good work you are doing that you sell each of your pups being sold as "pets" on a desexing contract, this will prevent people with the attitudes I just mentioned from breeding generations of unhealthy dogs which will more than likely result in many more dogs which are pts or mistreated each year. Out of curiosity, which breed do you own?
-
Rowie, it was the ears which innitially drew me to the breed all those years ago!!! I think the Papillon disease is catching, soon every body will want one as much as I do!!! :o
-
Oh what sad storys  Those poor little kids, its terrible when things like this happen. A dog is ten times more likely to attack if it is restrained, add that to a little kid half its height, food, a naturally protective breed and owners who think it is fair to leave their dogs tied outside all day and you have got a recipe for disaster!!! I wonder if there is a common link other than all that which these dogs share? Possibly a bad line that they are coming from - puppy millers? I don't know, but this sort of thing should NEVER happen, and wouldn't if people would just take more responsibility
-
HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that is just TOO cute! :o
-
"The way to get started" is NOT simply to buy a dog and suddenly breed it at the first chance you get, without even knowing a thing about breeding! You have to at least know the breeds history, possible birth defects etc etc etc before you even get the dog!!! It takes a lot of research to successfully breed good dogs! Coming on a forum and asking when a bitch will come in to heat to me, says this person has never even owned a dog before, let alone is ready to breed one!!! Especially such a complicated breed!!! Hope that answers your question icey, would elaborate but am missing my favourite show as I type!!! :o
-
Bently, I took your advice... I shouldn't do that to myself though, looking at those adorable Paps is self torture!!! :o http://papillonclub.org/rescue/availdogs.html Oh I would take Toby home in a second!!! Or Aspen, or Skip.. or Ginger, or any of them!!! Oh I knew I shouldn't have done that to myself  Now I'm all worked up with no Pap to cuddle! :(

I've talked alot in here about the great Dog Training Club the whole family go to every Sunday morning, well they've just got up a web site!!! For anyone interested, here is the link: http://www.thearmidalemall.com/adtc/index.html I went to their annual meeting last night, in my fashionable ugg boots, to become more involved in the group. Well I did! I somehow found my hand going up to be the minutes secutary after a long speech on how the secutarty really did need help and no one else put their hands up, so I felt a little guilty and raised my hand and next thing ya know, I'm an official member of the committy!!! I've never done any thing like this before, but I'll get used to my new job!!! I'm glad to feel important to tell the truth  My sister also elected herself to be the Club Store manager and in charge of the Club Library, which is cool because now I can read all the books and be getting smart quick! I'm also going to try to organise a speech from Dr Tom Lonsdale himself through the Club, it might be better than doing it through Uni... but we'll see what happens! :D

Where do people get the idea that just because they own a pure bred they should breed it? Or that the best way to go about breeding a dog is to find a pure bred, find a mate (possibly *shudder* of a different breed, eg labradoodle) and let them go at it!!!! Its not that easy, and there are countless "good" breeders out there who spend decades trying to perfect the breed, countless hours doing research etc and for what? So people can buy their pups from inexperienced breeders and go on to breed pups of their own, probably full of all sorts of genetic defects!!! Ok, my advice to you, if you have looked in to the breed and have yourself a top quality dog get involved in showing and see if you can accomplish a tittle. After 2 or more years your bitch should be old enough to breed - NOT BEFORE!!!! If your dog comes into season do EVERY THING THAT YOU CAN to ensure no other dog gets near her. You have ALOT of reasearching to do before you can even consider breeding her, and especially bulldogs are NOT a good breed for first timers!!! So contact her breeder, she can help you select a stud dog and go through the ropes with you. She will know her dogs better than any one else, so she should be able to tell you what sort of possible birth problems may exist in her lines, and what dog is best to breed yours with, as if she is a good breeder she will have already done a great deal of research into blood lines and what goes best with what. If this isn't the case, and you just picked up your pup from an ad in the newspaper, or, heaven forbid, the pet shop DO NOT BREED, GET YOUR BITCH SPAYED BEFORE SHE GOES IN TO HEAT!!!! It will be the best for everyone.

Everything that DogPaddle said, plus compulsary microchipping and heavy fines for non compliers. They supposedly have compulsary chipping here but do you think they do anything to enforce it? Jail and fines if caught dumping puppys... we recently had a litter of Pit/Mastiff puppys dumped by the river, strategically placed so that when they wriggled they would slide in and drown, those evil bastards who put them there belong in jail! On the education campaignes, there should be tv commercials, pamphets handed out in the mail, whole television shows on looking after dogs, like Harrys practice or something but completely devoted to dog care, on at an hour the whole family can watch. There should be a big push for dog training for EVERYONE and it should be affordable with all training methods available with a emphasis on socialisation. And all these things have to be enforced, there's no point in having laws if they aren't enforced and unfortunatly all the laws here involving dog ownership aren't even given the time of day.
It's the most humane thing to do.
Oh yes, definatly the most humane thing to do, also the most sensible. Get her spayed asap. I would also like to add to every one elses great posts, that the number of animals dying at shelters each day is not getting any smaller!!! Nor is the number of dogs being mis treated, beaten, abused or simply not properly cared for. The world would be better off if these pups are not born.
-
But is there such a thing as any breed that is born fluffy and sheds to have a short coat? I don't think there is, so until that mutation spontaniusly pops up out of no where and is selectivly bred from for many generations it couldn't be possible. Then to put that gene into a Pit would be even further work, so I doubt it could be possible for thousands of years any way, even if the gene did pop up, which is very unlikely in itself. Although if you like there are many rescue dogs out there who were born hairy, got allergys, lost their hair and ended up in the shelters due to owners who only want a "beautuful, allergy free dog", if that helps at all!!! :o
