Oh he's just gorgeous!!! I'd get that one!!!  I wouldn't worry about the rescue Pit turning on you (if thats what he is). Tell your dad how they are renowned for their friendliness, you are less likely to have a Pit turn on you than any other breed as far as I know. All those attacks in the news paper, well half of them aren't even Pits, another number of them are only there because they have been victumised (an attack which by any other breed would not have gone to the mediea) and the rest of them, well they aren't the ones that have turned on their owner, they are usually PROTECTING their owner. So tell your dad to stop worrying that the dog may turn, it is probably less likely to turn on you than that beautiful boy you just posted  I would be concerned about your other dogs though if you got the Pit, they can live happilly around other dogs, but you'd want to take it home for a trial before you made any decisions to keep it because if it didn't get along with your other dogs they would be in more danger than say if the border collie didn't get along with them. Just something to think about, although the one with the ears is mighty cute! :D

Its the same thread, we just kind of lost the topic!!! By the way, you should join us... that way you can edit your posts

It depends on where we are walking them. If its near roads/town etc they stay on the lead. Every day though we walk them out in the paddocks across the road, they get to run and play, they love it! If I see other people I call Lily back, she nearly always comes but in the rare occasion that she doesn't I keep walking and she comes to me after she's finnished sniffing what ever was distracting her. She never just ignores me completely (the other dogs always come straight away).

Thanks Hazel, I'm suprised I can get any thing straight at the moment! If you'll believe me I'm right in the middle of reasearching and note taking for a 1500 word essay I have to do on Bananas of all things  Yup, its official... I'm going bananas!!! :o
-
Updates, please!!! Which one did you decide to get?
-
Hazel, I wouldn't worry too much about our questions giving pointers out, if some one really wants to fight their dog they will find out how, they don't need a forum of 99% anti dog fighters for tips! But I was wondering the same thing, if the dog only has to go in the Pit once, to be tested for gameness, how do they just "know"? Looking at the dog that comes in the house, it does not just come inside once and just know how to behave, it learns through trial and error, and if only given one chance how can there be any trial and error? :-?

Good post Cassie, although I don't agree 100% with every thing it has said it raised some good points. There are plenty of cross breeds in pounds in need of homes, the thing I disagree with is people breeding mutts and trying to sell them for massivly exaggerrated prices and pretending they will grow into some thing that in all likely hood they will not, and the people who make tv programmes promoting this nasty practice. Mutts play a good part in this world, I should know that, we have three mutts!!! But why encourage people to breed these mutts? There are enough mutts around already, if some one wants to know what their dog will grow in to they should buy a pure bred, if they want unpredictability and hybrid vigor, they should buy a normal mutt from a shelter at a reasonable price. A lot of these designer breeds are no healthier than pure breds anyway, you need to chuck in three or four breeds before you can actually see the change in hybrid vigor. Puddles (a so called ChiPoo who we got before I even knew about designer dogs!) is a good example of that. Hybrid vigor? Well if thats what her breeders were after they went very wrong some where down the track! Our pedigree boxer Lily is a lot healthier and has a lot less problems than our "ChiPoo", which supposevely is supposed to be energetic, non shedding and friendly... yes, and full of hybrid vigor!!! You really want hybrid vigor, by a proper mutt, go to the shelter and pick yourself up with too many breeds to count and you'll see hybrid vigor! Tessas an example of that... Kelpie, Blue Heeler, Pit Bull, Bull Terrier... god only knows what else!!! She is the healthiest kind of dog you can find, and she only cost $20!!! Plus we knew we were saving her life. None of this $700 bullshit you get when buying a crossbred mutt with a label.

Ha, just found this in another forum!!!
Well, this weeks trading post was another eye opener again! Whilst browsing through, I noticed a couple of ads, well I should say I noticed the 'breeds'!! The ads have been taken directly from the trading post site www.tradingpost.com.au Maltaliers (Maltese cross Cavaliers), as same on Burkes Backyard, micro-chipped, wormed and vaccinated, ready to go, late September, $650 CASTLE HILL Pugaliers (Pug cross Cavalier), delightful temperament, microchipped, wormed, vaccinated, $650 CASTLE HILL Cavoodles (Cavalier cross Poodle), microchipped, wormed, vaccinated, as seen on Burkes Backyard, $650 CASTLE HILL Seems like the Cavalier has been busy!! these ads are all from the same person. There is also another ad, their description? Maltese designer dogs..... Just thought I would share.....
Pfft, what good is this guy bringing to the world? A bunch of millers breeding mutts and making $650 a pop for 'em!!! :o  Apparently the trading post (where these dogs were advertised) has banned ads selling Pit Bulls for no good reason, yet they allow these puppy millers to make a fortune through them by unscroupulous breedings and silly breeds that don't even exist!!!
You need the whole kit and kaboodle.
Haha, I just saw the last word in that sentance before I read it and thought you were talking about some other designer breed!!!

Luv me do, I honestly don't know what you are on about. There is no element of truth in your whole post, so why did you bother posting?
Dollars mean more to your type of breeder than what the dog owners want.
No, I think it is your kind of breeder who only cares for dollars, breeding mutts and trying to push the prices sky high for something you have no idea of what it will turn out to be. The dog owners have plenty of breeds to choose from to find something they want, designer breeds only give them unpredictability, and nobody wants that.
We designer dog breeders are breeding dogs with less faults and better temprements that your pure breds.
Oh yeah? How can you say that when you don't even know yourself what you are breeding? I mean honestly, do a little bit of genetics and you'll realise that the crossing over of alleles is completely random, so how can you predict what you are going to get? Good breeders spend years trying to pick the right lines and breed much more stable dogs than dogs that have simply been chucked together and hoped for the best.
How dare you run down breeds you obviously know nothing about. Take the time, you may learn a few things that may benifit the dog and its owners.
I think you are the one who needs to learn a few things, not us. And we are not running down any "breed" as they are mutts, so what you said means nothing any way.
Most dog owners care more about the temprement and well being of a dog and not some fancy breeding background.
Oh, finally you've said something with truth behind it!!! Yes, people do care more for temprement and well being, which is why most smart people will buy a pure bred, because they have solid breeding and are stable, not some fancy breeding with unpredictable health and temprement as do designer dogs.
Take time and do a bit of research like Don Bourke has before you have the hide to critasize him. He is the professional not you bunch of dills.Wake up
Don Bourke is FAR from an expert on dogs, breeding, genetics etc... he is a GARDENER!!! Maybe if he'd stick to what he knows there wouldn't be conversations like this one, he's the one who should wake up, not us. At least we know what we are talking about, he simply looks for some type of mutt to star on his show so that the breeders of this mutt can make a fortune. Where are the morals in that :-?
-
Trauma my arse!!! How can it be so traumatic for him when it was his own decision and it didn't have to be done? I don't believe a word he said, just some red neck trying to make himself look good, well I ain't gonna be fooled!!! Pfft, what a looser.
-
Not very often  When we walk the dogs run out into the feild of long grass where no one goes, so its ok. At home Lily always goes in the poo corner, kind of hangs her bum right over it!! Tessa goes in the general area of the poo corner and Donna just goes where ever!!! Which is no good, because Lily and Tessa are completely on the BARF diet so their poo's turn to powder and dissapear within a few days anyway so I wouldn't have to pooper scoop even if they did go any where else, Donna on the other hand gets dry food as well as BARF, so her poo's don't just dissapear in a few days and so I have to pick them up!!! Dad should really do it, seeing as she's his dog, but I don't really mind that much because at least when I pooper scoop I can see how the dogs digestion is working etc by taking note of what their poos look like. You don't seem to notice Puddles' poo's, we've got a pretty big back yard, plus she is fed BARF and they dissapear in a few days anyway so by the time I get around to picking up Donnas poos Puddles' are pretty much impossible to find.
-
Hazel, thats the same thing I was wondering, to fight back is one thing but how can you breed a non aggressive dog that will fight in the first place? :-?
-
Thats true mouse, its also good to know people, I'm getting 60% off at the moment
-
Well not quite the middlest of the middle of nowhere, but almost!!! There's only one pet shop here and the next nearest town is over an hour away and is also just a country town with no big name pet stores, just the little ones that stick to what they know (usually euk etc like I said). I'm slap bang in between Sydney and Brisbane, which are over 6 hours either way. I found Nutrience extremely over priced actually, like Euk, it just had some usual ingredience which were fancied up with a few herbs etc and sold at 10 times the price! :o Puddles was on it for a while but she got very constipated and lost alot of energy from it. I understand that you trust kibble more, the way I see it, although I don't believe in kibble, as long as you are feeding what you honestly believe is best and your dogs are doing well on it there's nothing wrong with that! :D
-
I guess the reason I'm so against this whole game testing thing is because to test that a dog is game you need to fight it, if there were any other way to test that a dog was game, and it was guarenteed that they would never be fought, I would say GO FOR IT!!! I can see Hmmms side of the arguement, but still strongly disagree in fighting as a means to test weather a dog is suitable to breed. There are other ways.
-
All our dogs get BARF. Malamum, do they sell Innova in pet shops in Sydney? You can't get it here, but if I do get this Papillon I will need something to feed it until I get back to armidale with him and I was hoping to find some innova or eagle pack or something of the like (you can only get euk, nutrience and science diet here).

Oh can this REALLY be happening to me???!!!
Oh Aroura! I am so happy for you! I know how it feels finding the "one". That special breeder. After so long! You lucky thing you! That will never happen to me though...
Why not? :(
I'm not going to say congratulations yet because I'll just jinx you.
LOL, thanks Horsefeathers!!! Thats one thing I don't need! :o  I've heard of those sorts of contracts before, but I've never actually seen one. Lilys breeder asked me a load of questions and gave me an information pack etc when I got her, but no contract. Still havn't got an email back from the breeder yet!!! I figured I'd get one tomorrow, as Veronica would have replied today, and so the breeder will probably get it tomorrow and send me one back... but I can't wait! Waiting is the worst bit! LOL, I'm going crazy here  I've already decided what type of lead to get him, I'm going to change his name to Monty... I've pretty much got his life planned! I'll be heart broken if I can't get him though!!! Guess I should stop thinking about it for at least 2 minutes!!!! -

Will do Malamum  Havn't had another email back from the breeder so far today, fingers crossed though!!! I read the contract i have to sign when I get him, its very detailed!!! I must crate him when I'm not at home so he's not squashed by the other dogs (I'm sure I'll have alot of q's about crating!), I'm strictly NOT allowed to tie him up at all, he has to be an indoor dog, if I don't desex him and he has pups I have to pay $1000 per pup that is born!!! :o If I need to rehome him he must be returned to the breeder, I'm not allowed to find a home for him myself unless it goes through her etc etc etc... you get the picture, and its a leagal document... I think its kind of cool, and its great to know the breeder values her dogs so much. I'm very nervously waiting for the email from the breeder confirming that I can have him, I'm sure it will all go through though and I'm so excited!!!! I'm not looking forwards to calling my friend in Melbourne though, and telling him I can't go... :-? :( :o -

Thanks Malamum! :D I'm going down to Wollongong on the weekend of the 26th, so I'll arrange it around that. The funny thing is I'm not even exactly sure how old he is!!! I just saw the picture and fell in love!! I've emailed the breeder asking his age though, I've also got alot of other questions for her. I can tell she is a good breeder, but is he the right dog? I'm sure of it!!! But I'll still ask some questions, in particular, she said he is shy, I'll have to see exactly what she meant by that. Things aren't 100% sure yet, but hopefully I'll know tomorrow for sure if I'll be getting him! -

Oh I'm so happy I could cry!!! I nearly am crying!!! I want Frankie more than any thing else in the world right now and it sounds like I'm going to get him!!! Is there an exploding with happyness emoticon??? I just got an email back from the breeder saying she thinks I would make an ideal home for a Papillon  She has emailed Lilys trainer to confirm what I said in the questionairre and I don't see why Veronica would say that any thing was wrong (she's visited on a few occasions to see our dogs in their home situation) and then I think I can get Frankie!!! And to top this excitement off I was so happy I rang my sister and told her all about it. She asked how much he would cost and I told her I could scrape the money together, I'd just have to go without any thing else for a few weeks, but then she said, although she never borrows out money, that she would quite happilly lend me $200!!!!!!!!!!! Can this be happening? Really? Or am I just dreaming??? I don't believe it!!! He's the cutest little thing!!! Only 8 inches tall!!! He's going to stay pretty much permanantly glued to my side, so small, so cute... awww!!! It means I'm going to have to quit my trip to Melbourne (sorry BK) because that would just be stretching money/time out too much, but anything for this cute little dog!!! I have to go to Wollongong to pick him up, which is only around 9 or so hours from here and I will be breaking the trip up over Sydney, Gosford and Newcastle so it wont be too long for him... Malamum, maybe I could visit you and you could meet him?? Ahhh I'M SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :D :D  -
Yeah its great, might actually be able to get some new clothes!!! The dogs are happy too, the chicken that this butcher sells is alot meatier than the stuff they were getting before, also he always goes out the back and chops nice big meaty bones for Tessa so she's got something to keep her busy while the others work on their chicken (Tessa goes through a chicken carcass in about two seconds, the others take ages to eat theirs!)
-
Any one here remember that I was having trouble finding cheap meat for the dogs? I couldn't find anything less that $2-3 a kg. Considering the dogs go through almost 20kg a fortnight I was spending from $40 to $60 a pay on meat for the dogs alone!!! Well, good news at last!!! The butchers here have just started getting chicken carcass' in, they sell them for $1kg, but lucky me knows the manager and always gets dog bones free (they normally cost a fair bit - $3 a bone or something) and 10kg of chicken for $4!!! Thats saving me $16 - $26 a week!!! Plus the dog bones, which I get a few given to me each week which adds up, and when you hardly get enough money for yourself each week, let alone the dogs, those savings mean alot to me!!! Oh, and as an added bonus the managers pretty cute so I get to see him all the time too... if I don't pick up my dog meat each week he rings me and asks where I've been!!!
-
Midori, sounds to me like your mum is very wise!!! So true  My best friend always says she doesn't like dogs, but when ever she's around them she'll give 'em a pat and smother them  People who don't like dogs and just don't have anything to do with them are different to people who don't like dogs and take it out on the dog. I don't mind people who come over and simply don't pat or pay any attention to the dogs, but the people who will yell at them and actually show thier dislike is another thing, what has the dog ever done to them? :-?
-
Well seeing as I don't have the statistics of how many APBT attacks were made by game bred dogs and how many were made by others, I'm not going to jump to any conclusions BUT if what you are saying is true, that game bred dogs are less likely to attack a human, why do you think that is? Seriously, think about it... people who breed for gameness must breed for a dog that wont bite humans, yet all these other "oops" dogs who are not bred for gameness don't follow any particular breeding plan so OF COURSE they are more likely to bite!!! If you simply bred for temprement, with out the gameness I'm sure you would see a lot less attacks than from those "oops" bred dogs. If rolling/fighting/matching - what ever you want to call it, is used for testing for gameness, there is no two ways about it, IT IS WRONG
