1. Poor Laurel :o Maybe by bringing it up our poor dogs got jinxed! :-? He's in there now, I'm SO worried!!! My little baby! The vets asked if he was a chihuahua!!! Why does everyone think that? I guess its because he's one of only two papillons in the whole town (and the other uses a different vet!) and his fur on his ears isn't all big and fluffy and because he is on the lowest size of the standard :-? And you know how I was going to get his tooth pulled out? Well the vets were good about it and said they'd look at it, but unless they could see a future problem they'd leave it in because with small dogs it can cause more harm than good by shifting the teeth and making the others loose. They were really good about it actually, didn't try to make me spend more than I had to - I'm glad I changed vets, I mean the other one is good but I think they like their money a little too much :o I'll follow the instructions Cassie, what ever is best for my boy I'll do it! :D (I'm still shaking with worry though :( )
2. Don't stress too hard, you'll find the perfect pup and then you'll never look back  A Flat Coat sounds great! Yeah, prices may be high but if the parents are health checked etc at least you can come with that reasural and know that your money was well spent. Check out the breeder, maybe see if you can track down anyone with pups from a previous litter who you can ask about the breeders future support and also how the pup has grown to be. Again, good luck
3.
Don't worry.....Things will go fine for Montie. He will never even miss "them"..
Hmm... funny thing is I've always said that to so many people, but now that its my baby boy I feel terrible for him!
4. Ok, I wrote a post on here before about dew claw removal, I had decided to leave Monties front dew claws on until yesterday. I took him for a walk at the Pine Forest and he was running around gleefully until he stumbled, he came back and he had blood all over his feet. I picked him up and sure enough he'd almost ripped one of his dew claws right off and it was hanging loose, bloody and painfully. He's getting desexed tomorrow, so I'm glad in a way that it happend now instead of a weeks time. He yelps when I touch it and I feel bad :( Wish him luck in surgery tomorrow please
5. Don't they just shoot up some times? I'm glad to hear he's well
6. Mmm, cute irish vet bk, is he married?  I'm assuming Cryptorchid is when their balls umm, aren't decended? No, he's fine in that department, and very proud of it!!! I'm trying to spoil him as much as possible before hand, so that he forgives me after for removing his man hood!
7. WTF??? :o Why would she say the dog was hers if it wasn't? I just don't get it? :-? I hope this silly bitch gets what is coming to her, I really do hope there is something Otter can do and that this women goes through as much suffering, no, more, than Otter has
8. Great to hear Coal is doing well!!! He is at that age where their brain falling out is not uncommon, he should grow out of it though!!! Sometimes I'll have a day with Lily, especially at agility, where she will be just so lazy. I will say "over" and she does it so slack that she knocks all the jumps down, even though they are on the lowest hight when she should be on the highest.
9. Oh they are just darlings!!!! Elliot is gorgeous!!! They are all gorgeous!!! Go for the drive, meet the pups, say you'll think about it and have a coffee and chat with your parents about it over coffee. Its easier to make the right disision if the breeder isn't standing right next to you while you discuss it, that also gives you a chance to think rationally about it without the cute little puppies making you make a decision that isn't right. One peice of advice I have for you is to crate train it as a pup, I can't remember who it was who posted about their dog tearing things to shreds and they couldn't crate it because it barked, well don't fall into the same situation. Puppies DO CHEW!!! Especially apartment dogs and breeds such as the Turv who have lots of energy. I think that you can do this, I beleive that you will provide the adequete training and exercise for such an intellegent and energetic breed. And I'd love to see pics, I feel your excitement!!!
10. Every Sunday we pack all five dogs, as well as dad, my sister and myself into the car to go to training the whole week waiting for sundays, training is the highlight of my week, as well as the highlight for the dogs - they love it!!! We go because its fun for us, its fun for the dogs, the socialisation for the dogs (and us) is great, the trainers are so much fun, its cute to see the other doggies, Lily needs it (she'd be impossible without it and would probably eat the nearest dog if given a chance), it gives me some thing to be activly involved with, its a great learning experience, and did I mention, its fun?  I honestly don't know what I'd do without it, I spend so much time preparing for classes, not because I have to, but because I'm so anxious waiting for them that I have to do something! Even waking up at 6:30 on a Sunday morning is worth it. Hazel, did you start coal on the clicker? How is he taking to it?
11. Did you end up having his eyes tested? I'm curious about that still  Cassie is right, you do make alot of friends!!! I'm friends with all the trainers, which is great because they know so much. I also have made a few really good friends from it who I can go out with at night, study with at uni and travell with in the holidays. One of them owns a Pit, which is great cuz it means I can get lots of Pittie hugs and also he's best friends with Lily and the socialisation with such an overly friendly dog is great for Lily. Another has a smaller dog which I'm hoping will become good friends with Montie (Montie is so territorial inside right now, but he'll be neutered soon and hopefully they'll get along!) so not only do you benefit from the friendships, but your dogs do too. If Cody can make even one special friend at training, that'll be a big leap towards him making more friends as well. Good luck! :D
12. Yes, they are definatly not the right dog for every body. I've dreamt of having a Neo for ages, and did plan to get one but unfortunatly if I want a life with Papillons that can't include a Neo, as even with the friendliest intentions a Neo could easily squash and kill a pap, so no Neo for me :(
13. Thanks all  Well the expensive one I was going to take him to do have a fairly good reputation, and it is the "main" vet in town - situated right next to Maccas... the rest are in little streets etc. The staff are friendly and knowledgable, but I do think that they are alot in it for the money - not only are they more expensive but they'll try to grab extra money off you left right and centre (yes, including trying to get you to buy their over priced science diet rubbish). So I came to the conclusion that they cost more because they can charge more (being a fancier clinic with more vets etc and a dog grooming place out the back) but it doesn't mean they're better. The vet he's going to now doesn't even sell pet foods unless you order them in (I'm going to ask about The Missing Link) and they care alot about thier work. So price doesn't always mean better, I only just realised that after ages of being paranoid! Also, I know he's healthy, he's only a year old and always full of energy. If it was one of our older dogs I'd get the blood work done, but I don't particulary think he needs it. I don't know how I'm going to go, waiting at home all day for him... I'll get so worried and miss him so much! :o
14. A Pit did cross my mind, but one thing to seriously think about is the idea of a Pit and a small animal, that could turn out disasterous. Most breeds can be taught to get along with small animals (with the exception of foxies and jack russels, they are very hard to get the killing instinct out of), but puppys can be CRAZY!!!! Its hard enough to get them to settle down normally, let alone have them be reasonable around a small animal. Plus if this is your first dog you don't want a dog that is dog aggressive. Dog aggressive dogs can be great pets, but as a first time owner the first sign of aggression will leave you heart broken, as all your dreams of having doggie visitors and having your dog play for hours with any dog it meets will be shattered. A Keeshound sounds GREAT!!!! A Turveren may not be ideal, but if you have found a good breeder I would strongly reccomend them over a BC. Have you considered a dalmation? They are beautiful and if they are exercised regulary they can be great apartment dogs, plus you'll have the bonus of owning a head turner that no one will be able to walk past without going "oh, look at the Dalmation!!!"... you'd be very proud
15. Do you seriously want a border collie? I'm sorry, its after 4am, I've been out at the pub all night and my brain seriously isn't even close to working state!!! I've never actually owned a border collie, but there are ALOT in the pound, and there is a good reason for that - people get them without knowing what they are taking on. I can see you realise the responsibility of such an energetic dogs, but I still wouldn't reccomend it, especially as a first time apartment dog. Hmmm, I wish I could give you a great suggestion instead of a Border Collie. Aside from the shredding it could do, you've also got to look at the barking it most likely will do also. If you have a Guinea Pig (is it a guinea pig? Cant remember right now!) I would strongly reccommend you dont' do any herding, our kelpie cross had a natural herding instinct strong enough that it killed our rabbits when they escaped, not intentionally, but accidently scared them to death while trying to herd them back into their hutch. Another kelpie/border collie cross that visited here one day killed one of our guinea pigs before we even realised they were in the yard together. You have to be very careful with herding dogs, they can be trained to get along with other pets, but you do have to get over their instincts first. I know you have your heart set on a Border Collie, but let me just suggest that there are alot more suitable breeds out there also in need of a home
16. $9?!! Yeah, some vets do rake up the bill, our other vet (I take the animals to different vets depending on what they need done to them, I know I should stick with only one, but some of them cost less, but I'm not keen to have them do major surgery...) is also a very good vet. This one isn't the cheapest vet in town, but they are very good so I rang them up to get some quotes this morning and it looks like I can get it all done there for less than $200... so I made an appointment and am cancelling the other. I trust them there, plus I always drop in there when I walk past with the dogs to weigh them, so they know me there. Its still going to be next monday, and I told her how worried I was, but like I said before, they did my sisters rat without worries so they should be able to do Montie! I'm actually glad I made the decision to get him done now, he's begining to mark in the house again for some reason, he did ON MY BED last night when I was about to go to bed, so I wasn't too happy that I had to change all my sheets when I was dead tired and just wanted to pass out!!! Also, he's showing some pretty severe aggression problems, he hasn't bitten anyone yet, but when ever any of the big dogs or my brother goes near him he goes mental, he's ok outside but is very territorial of the house. I'm hoping desexing will help with that :-?
17. Ok, the pamphlet says they are for blood chemistry (kidneys, liver, pacreas, thyroid, parathyroid and intestinal tract) to indicate anaemia, dehydration, endocrine diseases and certain types of tumors. Complete Blook Cell Count..... Something like that, so they can see if there are any underlieing problems before anesthetic. This is the most expensive vet in town, I'm taking him there because of just that, I'm so fussy about these things, I can hardly afford it but for some reason I just wont go for anything less... even though the other vets are just as good :-? Should I get quotes from the other vets? I know one down the road is good, should I take him there and see what they say about costs? Lily went to the expensive one, I was happy with their service, we got a phone call in the middle of the day to let us know she was going great, then the day after we picked her up they rang to ask how "silly lily" was going  Quality and price don't neccissarrilly go hand in hand though, do they? Maybe I should at least check the other one out (they desexed my sisters rat without problems, so I guess they could do a dog?), I'm just so fussy about this! I really am worried about him, what if he can't handle the anesthetic? :(
18. Yeah, I was thinking that bk, it does get a little confusing! But keeping all that in mind does anyone have any idea of approximatly how much might cost for the tooth? I'll give them a call about it anyway. BK, the bloodwork tests are just to test the internal workings, make sure the kidneys and liver etc are healthy, have a blood count etc. Its not something that really has to be done, most tests will show up fine, but its more a peice of mind thing.
19. I only had a brief look at the page, and don't know the truth in the articles, but those dogs all looked in pretty good condition to me, plus there were alot of champions in the bloodlines, there were no scars on the dogs (that I saw) and all the dogs had their natural ears (which I REALLY admire, can't stand cropped ears!). Now I can't say I know too much about fighting, but the fact that there were leaner dogs said to me that this guy didn't fight, don't people fight the beefy ones? The fact that their ears were uncropped also said they probably weren't faught. As for the chains, well I'm guessing they were chained up possibly because they were breeding dogs, I don't know, but I can't see an apbt breeder keeping 15 breeding dogs together in a house, unchained, it could turn out to be quite a blood bath. I'm not saying I agree with chaining, or with breeding so many dogs, all I'm saying is that from what I can gather there are alot worse people out there. Just putting forward another view of the topic
20. Well Montie and I just got back from the vets. I took him there to weigh him, get him on the data base and make an appointment for him to be desexed. Well, in a week he's gonna go in and have his balls chopped off :o I'm so worried, what if it goes wrong? He's only just under 2kg, so small.... Maybe I'm being an over protective mummy, but I'm just so paranoid that something might happen... he's my baby!!! And it costs like twice as much as I expected!!! I don't know, maybe I'm crazy but I expected it to cost less than $100, I thought male dogs were really cheap to get done, especially the tiny ones? I don't know where I heard it was so cheap... maybe it was just cheap for our cats because they were done by our friend who is a vet!!! Well I'm not too concerned about the cost of the desexing ($150), but I'm a bit concerned about how I'm going to afford the rest of it. Firstly, they reccomend blood tests, which I can't say no to because as you know, nothing but the best for my boy and I want the peice of mind. I think they're $45... but then I just remembered that he has one pesky little dew claw on one of his back legs that I want to remove I guess for convenience more than anything, and also (this could be a biggie that could break my budget) one of his incisers is broken in half and although it looks fine now it could turn bad and I don't want to risk that, so I'm going to ask for it to be removed. Does anyone have any idea how much that might cost? God he's lucky he's so damn cute!!! I can't believe how much he's costing me - $400 to get him plus the $100 I spent travelling, $100 on a crate and $50 on a harness, training etc, now this, I'm beggining to feel very poor! :( I'm not going to be able to go on all those holidays I've been planning to visit my friends for a VERY long time!!!! It may not sound TOO much for some people, but keeping in mind I'm only a student... The things we do for dogs eh? :-?
21. Aww thanks  Best of luck to your friend and their dog, hope the info helps!
22. They do don't they Nea. I'd really like to own one some day, I've fallen in love with Papillons and can see myself in ten years time living in a house full of the little darlings, but I will always have a big dog and think my next big dog may very well be a Canaan
23. Ah, I thought the name rang a bell but wasn't sure so I did a search on it. Here's a link to a page: http://www.cm-d.com/buckeye/tech_manual/8_27.html
24. How old is Cody? I don't really know what to say because I don't know his history and can't see exactly whats happening with my own eyes, but if by any chance its not his eyes (and I think we all hope his eyes are fine!) there are a few things you might want to look at. For starters, I'm not a professional (and I'm sure Lee Anne knows what she's talking about, I'm only saying this from my experiences) but I would not take him out of his class. If problems are beggining now is probably the worst time to remove him from social situations (this is still assuming its not his eyes). He needs to meet and greet as many dogs as possible BUT you need to learn how to read his body language and stop him BEFORE he goes for the other dog. I've learnt to do this with Lily and she hasn't struck another dog at training in months because of it. The socialisation is important though because he will never get used to being around other dogs if you take him away now. I thought Lily was a lost cause, the most I ever hoped for is for her to ignore other dogs, but I'm so happy to say she greets most dogs with a wagging tail these days and will even get into play with them :D The other thing, you mentioned meds... what are you feeding him? I noticed a dramatic change in Lilys temprement after switching her to raw - that is NO kibble and no grains. I'm not sure if it would make a difference if it was his eyesight, but surely its gotta be worth a shot if your only other option is daily doses of meds to play with his mind. Dont feel bad, we all have problems with our dogs from time to time and we all hope for you that its just a passing thing. Keep us updated on wheather its his eyes because if it is thats a whole new kettle of fish, but if its not alot of us here have had (or still do have) problem dogs and will be able to give you suggestions. Just a story of hope for you reguarding deaf dogs, one of the ladys at training has a few deaf dogs, one of them is a gorgeous Aussie. She goes in trials for agility with her dogs and has won titles over those with hearing time and time again. Her dogs are very focused on her, and I don't think you can really beat the bond that a deaf dog can have with its owner
25. K, that story is terrible!!! Worst thing is, if that was human food it would have had a recall by now :-? The only kibble I would ever feed (if I fed kibble) is Eagle Pack. Can you get that where you are? Malamum, I went to this shop while I was staying in Hornsby, I was like a little kid in a huge toy store, I was so excited!!! All these foods I'd heard so much about that I've never seen before!!! They have free sample bags of Eagle Pack, which I was over the moon about... I didn't actually buy anything so I don't have a reciept to check up on what shop it was!!! It was a little "Pet Food and Accessories" shop near or in Hornsby (I had no idea where we were most of the time I was in Sydney, some one else was driving and so I didn't really care!). It had Eagle Pack, Royal Canin.... I can't remember, but there was so much more than just the Euk they sell at the pet shop here! If Hornsby isn't too far away you might want to check that out
