1.       yes, all crates are now open. I just had to stop this train wreck however I could...       I know that these are deeply personal, opinion attitudes. But sometimes you have to take a vent at face value...it was just a vent...
2. I have trained both of mine to both hand and verbal signals. The funny thing, while not deaf, Laurel responds better to the hand signals. Dont know if during field training that was used or not. I can tell her to sit a dozen times, but she wont until she gets the hand signal..
3. Ok someone come thru for me. I have never heard of Citronella being used for anything other than mosquito repellant - Laurel bays at everything and everyone....do you think this wouold work for her? I am now trying passion flower...she is still baying at any noise she hears, including the kids, unbtil she realizes and is told to shut up.
4. Ok I'm NOT buying it...the "handler" had cocaine on his hands, and somehow the dog ingested it? That would be a severely miniscule amount, but would have no affect on the race itself. And it would depend on the dog licking everyplace he was handled. Cocaine speeds you up. If there were more than trace amounts in the bloodstream, I would think it was a deliberate attempt to make the dog more hyper. to run faster. I'm NOT thinking "accidental ingestion"....
5. well, this may not help you, but here goes. I had a malamute/border collie/(the vet thinks) wolf mix. Acquired as a puppy from a newspaper ad. He was very dominant, and if he didnt get his way, he would become aggressive, even to me and my ex. My ex got bitten once trying to do the "roll and control" (bad move, I DID tell him not to do it) and since I had a baby I was getting frantic. He did not like anyone he considered "beneath him", and he did not like not having complete control. They vet put him on doggy prozac (he was afraid of him, I had to take him in muzzled for shots) and it didnt help. What I didnt realize was that I was contributing to the problem. He needed a "firm alpha" and I wasnt it. My ex thought he was, but his way of teaching was by punishment, not positive. He got worse with time. Snow dogs tend to be "free thinkers", in their natural work environment, they have to be. They have to make choices, often against the mushers will. They often need to do what is best for the team. (Like not fall into a crevasse, for instance). I was not strong enough at the time to realize that the dog had become "alpha" in my household. I let him get that way. I didnt know any better. Someone introduced me to training by "pack rules". Inside of 6 weeks this dog was as mellow as a Golden, towards me. Still defensive towards strangers, but a baby in my hands. Still didnt like the ex, who wouldnt pay attention to anything I was trying to tell him. He became my sons best friend. He became one of the best dogs I ever had, through continual pack training and enforcement of the pack rules. I had been controlling him with a capture stick! It was the only way I could...I learned alot from that. and since then, all of my dogs have been subservient to me. Probably not necessary, but I enforce those rules anyway, just in case. :D
6.
You know, I was thinking about Buck's episode today and I remembered that he did fall in a hole on our walk the other day! It wasn't a deep hole. It was hidden with tall grass though and Buck stepped right into it. It was funny because all I could see was his head and tail and he looked so shocked. But, thinking about it, maybe he did twist or pull something when he fell in the hole
I be thinking that could be your answer. I stepped in a gopher hole once (damn little rodents, they bury their holes so you cant see them -   ) and I was gimping for days. Dogs seem to heal faster. Glad he's all better now!!'
7. I agree DAL, and while I am not a moderator, I am doing what i can to stop it. Dissenting opinions are allowed, that's part of the forum. I have been posting to that affect. Dont know if it will do any good...I agree that people can disagree. I get pissed when personal atacks are involved, and that's what I WANT to put a stop too...However, no one has to listen to me, since I have no real power over the board, but hopefully, they will take it into consideration... and to the mods, I am not asking to become one. I just want peace on our forum. :) (I probably shouldnt be one anyway...I am NOT the most tolerant person on the planet)...
8. OK I'M CALLING A TIME OUT!! EVERYONE IN THEIR CORNERS!! the post, as said before, was started by someone who was aggravated that a small dog had disrupted their day. Maybe some adjectives, unkind ones, were used (dustmop comes to mind) in the descriptin of the dog, but it was never stated in the original post that little dogs were disliked. we have gone down the primrose path of attacking each other over DETAILS... "this small dog did this" "this big dog did this"...etc.... we have ALL had incidents of running into dogs we did not particularly care for, yes, the owners are usually responsible, but the DOGS did the damage. VENTING IS ALLOWED!!! Can we get over this please???
9. ok my take. We ALL know that Pit's CAN be dog aggressive - not all are, but the potential is there. we Also ALL know that Pit's have a lousy reputation as being people aggressive, because of various different reasons...bad breeding, mix-breeding, bad or non socialization, etc. If they wanted to show a "high energy bar", why not use a Border Collie doing agility? Or a Foxhound chasing Fox? That takes a HELL of a lot more energy than standing there snarling at someone....they are trying to send a subliminal message here...not only are you going to have "more energy", but you will be TOUGHER and harder to beat as well. Advertising deliberately sends subliminal messages all the time, in pictures, in scene cuts, in well-chosen wording. Otherwise, why would all the clothing commercials show women with bodies to die for? Men's deoderants all go on the arms of beautifully muscled guys without an ounce of fat, and perfect hair? They're selling the picture, and the idea behind the picture. "If I buy that, I'll look like that/act like that/be like that..." It's an old ploy, but people still fall for it.   :drinking:
10. WOO HOO!! GO BUCK! GO BUCk! GO BUCK!!
11. :D :D :D I'm all for that!! I find it interesting that WE are supposed to be the "supreme evolutionary creature" and we can be SOOOO STUPID nonetheless.. Wolf packs do better at basic survival and understanding then WE do... makes you think, doesnt it? 8) 8) 8)
12. go easy Hmmm...understand that a lot of people dont understand where you are coming from. Most of us dont deal in the dogfight/game arena. :D
13. I agree with that. But I think DAL said some were showing a lot of aggression towards each other, so I still think she did the best thing. :D
14. this is an excerpt from the actual legal guidelines Keep your dog immaculate and well groomed and be sure that his or her behavior is quiet and unobtrusive. Carry proper identification for your dog and be willing to provide it in response to a polite inquiry. After all, inappropriate behavior by a pet passed off as an assistance dog creates a bad image and problems for the legitimate assistance dog, so verification of the dog’s status protects us all. But do be assertive if you are harassed or denied access. Know the laws that support you and be prepared to describe them. Carry a copy of your state law and the ADA regulation in your wallet or your dog’s backpack. If you travel, check the laws of the states you’ll be visiting. so Home Depot, or anyone else, can deny access to a non-assistance dog, but not a real assistance dog. hope that helps.
15.
This is not directed at anyone here but a carryover from another list that had a similar topic. PLEASE do not try to pass your dog off as a service dog. The people who NEED their dogs with them have fought long and hard to be allowed to bring their dogs into places that are normally off limits. If anyone were to indicate their dog is a service dog when it is not, and for some strange reason that dog misbehaved, it could rock the boat for those who truly need their dogs with them. There was a thread on this other list regarding Home Depot planning on banning dogs, apparently a contractor brought his dog along, the dog barked, ran around some, and scared some people, and Home Depot may have to ban dogs from their places of business. Legally they cannot ban service dogs at this time but still, no sense in making them think about it.
right now, in the US at least, it's a moot point. It is a Federal Law. The store doesnt get the choice. I agree with you however, because misbehaving dogs that the employees think are service dogs will tend to make them look down on real service dogs. there were a lot of restaurants, and even airlines, that fought the law when it was first passed, and they lost. Assistance dogs are allowed anywhere the owner is entitled to go.
16. she probably got her stitches, went home and let Fluffy sit in her lap all night. There is something about a lapdog that makes people spoil them if they dont know better. My cat is an attitude and a half, and gets away with stuff the dogs never would, but he also will cuddle up in my lap and purr.... I honestly think some people think of lapdogs and canine cats...now my cat will not bite me (unless I dont feed him when he's hungry, then he'll nip my ankle as a "reminder") but he will bite anyone else (except Kyle) who ticks him off. It's not a nasty bite, it's usually a hiss then a nip, never drew blood (except on the dogs, he WILL bite them hard) and the typical warning signs are there. Tail fluffs up, ears go back, there's a warning growl. If you're stupid and pick him up anyway, you get what you asked for.
17. the deer population is out of control here as well. I see them get hit by cars every spring and fall. The sad part is, the cops and animal control show up, and the first thng they do is put a bullet to it's head, put it out of it's misery. Hunting is not allowed around here, because even though there are so many forest preserves, they're surrounded by houses. I think BK the chase depends on the quarry. Humans cant run as fast as rabbits, or foxes, and that;s where the dogs come in. Foxhunting is done on horseback, because the dogs run like the wind and the hunters cant keep up with them either. and they're very difficult to sneak up on. I dont object to hunting, but I agree I dont like it for sport only. If you're going to kill it, at least have a reason for doing so, like you're going to eat it. or to cut down an overbearing population.
18. we agree, unconditionally. Bad owners are bad, regardless of the size of the dog.
19. we all realize the dogs will probably be put down.. It's STILL better than being fought to death...
20. thank you for posting it...there are a number of bad things toads can do to dogs... thanks!!
21. no DAL it makes sense, and it doesnt. If you agree to not breed the dog. because of deafness, I dont see why it cant be shown. It could still be "best of breed", even with an infirmity. I dont show, so maybe I'm clueless, but this seems wrong to me.
22. and wont QUIT until she's caught it! Stupid dog is exhausting herself jumping into the air to get it!! Guess she didnt learn the last time the cat taught her the "proper way" to catch a fly....sit and wait..nail it when it lands....
23. I accept that as being true of you, from what you have posted, and I believe it...However, I HAVE to ask.... If a small dog (or a mid sized one) latched onto your ankle, you wouldnt kick it to get it off? I am sorry, but I will not allow a dog to bite me, under any circumstances, and if that meant kicking it to make it go away, I would do that. Not to hurt it necessarily, just to make it stop. Just like the two fingered snap....I have never been bitten. and dont intend to be.... On a side note, I've never met a dog that TRIED to bite me, except the dachsund...I get along with almost all of them, and if they seem aggressive I stay out of their way. The two next door dont like me, but they dont like anybody so I'm not real concerned.... 8) 8) 8) 8)
24. I'm glad they're shut down...and I hope those pupsters find decent loving homes out there. What a complete DISGRACE!!! the pictures are heartbreaking. I agree, put these aholes in cages and let them live that way. See what "cruelty to animals" is really about! :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat:
25. I wasnt!!! I was offering to ship you a case....the offer is still good.... 8) 8)
