I can laugh at myself, I know better than to tempt these two with "outsidies" when standing on the stairs...it's a narrow stairway. They ALWAYS win.... My son put my shoulder back in place. I;m fine.
2.
Oh, you poor thing. Still you have to admit it's a little funny.
No, it's a LOT funny.. that's why I posted it. I KNOW better. silly things we do at the spur of the moment. I know better than to stand on the stairs with these two and even MENTION outside stuff. hunting dogs...outside sends them frantic. They bowled me over to get to the door... 3 feet away.... they never learned "patience is a virtue..."
3. to a retriever, or a foxhound, while standing on the stairs..."wanna go play ball? Run?" I think I've dislocated my shoulder....     time to start :drinking:
4. some dogs are allergic severely to the chemicals in carpet cleaning and furniture cleaning products. Same as people. I cant be anywhere near Febreeze... when I had carpet, I cleaned it with baking soda and seltzer water. I would spray the seltzer on the carpet, then sprinkle baking soda. Let it all dry and vacuum it up. also, spreading baking soda on the furniture, letting it sit for a while and vacuuming gets rid of odors. Febreeze is easier, but I cant tolerate it. :fadein:
5. pictures....of dogs sitting in shelters, behind metal bars, looking pathetic because they have no homes.... a picture is worth a thousand words...
6. I could breed Free (except she's fixed) and call her a "Point Lab" - she could lead the troops and look out for danger...      :drinking:
7. PETA started out with a valid charter, and really did try to help get animal cruelty under control. (Can you tell I'm old?   ) I used to admire their work...until they started getting fanatical. Posting signs in colleges telling people to drink beer, not milk...."freeing" all those lobsters so they could subsequently drown in agony....They have an ad that says something to the affect that "you mom is a killer", showing a mom with a butcher's knife slicing up an animal....I also remember hearing about them "busting" a puppy mill, and then LETTING ALL THE BEAGLES GO!!! because "they belong in the wild, free....."BEAGLES of all things!!! How the hell would anyone expect a beagle to survive in the wild? Freebee hunts and catches squirrels and she couldnt do it. At least she's tall enough to knock over a garbage can if she had to, to eat. They have become EXTREMISTS to the extreme. They dont want anyone to own pets. we need to let them all be "free", so they can starve, get hit by cars, and freeze....
8.    ok I have a confession to make..... My Free catches and kills squirrels, mice and whatever in the yard. Yet she has the greatest respect for my evil tempered cat, who has scratched, bitten and swatted both of them. So maybe I should consider her "animal aggressive" and not allow them all to lounge on the couch together. or maybe I should consider the PushyCat (he was named that for a reason. it suits him) "animal aggressive" and muzzle him. oh, and Laurel hunted fox, she must be animal aggresive too right? OMG I have a household full of animal aggressive animals!!! what to do? Prim, get over it ok?    and NO stealing puppies without me you guys!! I still want Freddun's new springer... 8) 8)
9. I have to go with Shara and K....dogs know things about people that people dont know. They have some kind of 6th "sense" which tells them not to like someone....he may dislike the super because he is invading your territory (they dont understand lease agreements    ) or because maybe you dont like him, and he senses it. or there may really be something sinister about the Super. (like K's milkman). I will always go with my dogs judgement in these situations. Does this guy make you nervous? Does something about him feel "wrong"? Those are usually the tell-tale signs that people have. Not as efficient as dogs. I had a guy come here once pretending to be an AC officer. Both of my dogs hair stood up on end and they SNARLED.....not growled, snarled. Full facial teeth view, hackles up, etc. They would both bark and sometimes growl when a stranger came to the door, but not like THAT. I slammed the door in his face and called the cops. Turned out he had escaped from the mental home and the cops were looking for him. So I tend to trust the dogs judgement, even over my own. A retired older gentleman came by this afternoon asking if I would like to pay him to trim my bushes. Neither dog even got up.
10. I agree that some of those "reasons" seem phony, but I also agree with Sasha and K that Lady is trying to do the best she can in a very hard situation. I am sorry she cant keep her pup, but she is correct that it would be better off in a home with attention and proper medical care. At least she shows she cares by trying to rehome it, instead of the typical shelter dump 'n' run we see so often. Sometimes life throws some very unfair curves..... Lady, best of luck to you in rehoming your Pom. You have the option of taking the father to court to force him to pay child support. and I would if I were you. If you are here in the US, it's a felony to skip out on child support.
11.   thanks everyone!!!! I never had a skittish dog before, she has been a challenge. but worth it!! Cheeky she is a purebred field trialed Foxhound. She hunted for the first 6 years of her life. Had no real exposure to people except the huntmaster. Lived in a pack of 15-20 other dogs in a kennel. They retired her and a foxhound rescue club took her in. Her fear has been an uphill battle, but I think we've finally crested and it;s gonna be downhill from here!! Starfox, I LOVE that sig....did he drink it, or just think about it?
12. glad it's not just me then....     I used to think it was just cuz Free's a mutt, but Laurel is a purebred. And her coat is doing much better since I started her on it. It used to be very dry, and she used to shed a lot. It's much better now...guess it just depends on the dogs....
13. WELCOME BACK ANGEL!! the pics are beautiful!! the Chi is just adorable... but that cat takes the cake. Looks like someone interrupted his bath....
14. well, I guess I'm the one-off.... I have to feed my cat Iams because it's the only food that will stay down except canned tuna, which doesnt have all the nutrients he needs. As much as I disapprove of Iam's testing methods, I'm not willing to let the cat suffer. everything else comes straight back up. even the prescription food the vet had me try. as for the dogs, I feed them both Purina ONE Lamb and Rice. They love it it works great on their coats. Neither of them like Iams. (someone gave me a bag of it). the dry is mixed with a small amount of canned, or leftovers from dinner. I've been told the food is junk, but look at their coats.... it appears to work well for them....
15. ****no basis in fact**** they think you're "watching them" as soon as the camera comes out. THEY KNOW...
16. for the FIRST time since I brought her home, she is wagging her tail openly at my son and coming out to greet him!! She actually paid more attention to him then me!! I have been working with her to get her over her fear. She is afraid of males. She begged treats off of him, sitting, laying down, acting good...she stuck her head in his face, and licked him!! sounds unimpressive, I know, but to me, it's PROGRESS!!! WOO HOO!!!
17. **whew** no, dont be sorry. If I say something stupid, I appreciate being informed of it. I DO say stupid things sometimes, I know that, and accept it. I just couldnt figure out WHAT I said THIS time...        I am not thin-skinned. I actually appreciate it if someone points out when I'm wrong. Life is a learning experience. I want to learn all I can... 8) 8) 8) 8)
18. I am VERY sorry Johnny. Dog aggrression due to illness is something that is not, in my opinion, very well investigated. Someone posted earlier about an amiable Lab Mix that went suddenly ballistic. Turned out he had Lyme Disease. The intense pain in the joints would make a person crazy, not to mention a dog. I have a friend who got it, the pain was so bad he wanted to kill himself. Dogs cant say "it hurts, but I have to be civilized" nor can they decide to take their own lives if the pain is too bad. Aggression is the only outlet. I really think a lot of aggression issues should require an autopsy, to find out what, if any, the real cause was.
19. I believe that. I want a papillon when I get old and cant handle two rambunctious hunting dogs (I posted that earlier I think). You are obviously a good dog owner, and yes, there are ways to spoil, cuddle and live in the "doggie lap of luxury" with a lap dog, or small dog. but you have to know, like you do, where to draw the "spoil line". Sitting in your lap and being cuddled is great, that's what these dogs were basically bred for (at that size). But you gotta draw the line at aggression and bad manners. Some dogs cant do it, and they end up being problems. I personally font think Chi's make good "lap dogs" because they are slightly aggressive to begin with. However, with good training (like HF's "Chico) it can be done. My big dogs are spoiled in some ways as well. They sleep on the couch. They mooch people food from my son and his friends. The silly scared foxhound WANTS to be a lap dog....(that's always fun when I'm on the computer. This chair is NOT big enough for both of us    ) but aggression and nasty attitudes are not allowed. I had a few instances of "bitch wars" going on here over bones. I had to step in, neither would back down. (typical of two females I have been told) I had to do the two fingered snap" (defined earlier) on both of them and then put them in seperate corners to chill out. Some people wold say that put me at risk, but when I "thunder", they back down. My voice is loud anyway. When I "thunder" you can hear it very far away. They both ignored, and got the "snap" for disobedience. They stopped. Sometimes you gotta take a hand in these things.
20. well, I'll have to test this. As posted, Laurel responds better to hand signals. I dont know if they were used in field hunting training or not. Freebee will respond to either, depending on if there's a treat involved (she respond faster to either with a treat. She responds better to hand if not) BUT....I have always "used my hands" to talk as well. (I cant complete a sentence without using my hands...that's what being brought up in an Italian family does to you     ) I find it easier to signal with my hands when I talk, but until now I never really thought about it. I'm sure they're not "proper" (obedience) hand signals, but they work ok. I find myself giving both the verbal command and the hand signal, but using only the hand signal if they dont obey the first time....hmmmm.... I also found myself giving the verbal command and hand signal, and when they didnt obey saying "WHAT did I just tell you?" using the hand signal again....Mom training coming at the dogs.......hmmmm..... :o :o :o they know when they hear "that question" that means "pay attention NOW"....I dont train that deliberately, it just kinda worked out that way....
21.

:D :D :D I'm all for that!! I find it interesting that WE are supposed to be the "supreme evolutionary creature" and we can be SOOOO STUPID nonetheless.. Wolf packs do better at basic survival and understanding then WE do... makes you think, doesnt it? 8) 8) 8)
It definately makes me think. Especially after reading some of the posts in this thread. *see thee above*
was that directed at me? :o and if so, why? did I say something stupid that I'm not aware of? (it's always a posibility y'know...)
22. Iagree..to a point, and this is where I think "knowing" is important. I HAVE a Lab Mix. from her characterisitics, her shape, her abilities, I have derived she also has German Shorthair Pointer, and Shepherd. She could PASS as a purebred Lab, to the unknowing. She is NOT. She does NOT like people...unless she knows them. She does NOT like small children, until introduced. and even then, doesnt like some. She does NOT like other dogs. I am dog literate, I can handle her. and make her behave. I dont believe the average unkowing dog owner could. She DOES NOT act like a Lab... the typical Lab... THIS is where there is problems listing a dog as a "Lab Mix"... 8)
23. I personally think it's a "God, help us" classification. Lab's are "America's sweethearts" in the dog arena. If the dog is classified as a "Lab Mix" it's more likely to be adopted. I PERSONALLY think this is wrong. Better you know what you're getting into to. But they want to find these dogs homes, and hope for the best. Sometimes, it works... 8)
24. Kat, feel free to PM me too....dogs know so much about how we feel, and react. they can truly be lifelines in a stressful sitaution....let me know if you need help please... :fadein: :fadein:
25. thank you Science!! I truly appreciate every piece of good news posted here. Good for you!! glad Hailey is doing well! and good to see you again!! :D :D :D :D
