1. wow, bummer. Illinois is not "clickable"....I wonder if that means there arent any place other than pet stores here that allow pets? :(
2. that's why I dont hunt, although I am not condemning anyone who does. If I HAD to, I could kill an animal to survive, and I'm a damn good shot. But I dont have to, so I dont want to. I would feel too bad for the animal. I know someone is going to say that's simplistic, but that's just me. I couldnt bring myself to kill another animal unless I had to. I havent even evicted the possums from under the porch....Just put a crate over the hole so the dogs cant dig there, but the possums can get out and look for food. I'm a wimp, I know....
3. I wonder if Home Depot and PetSmart are affiliated? Like Jewel and Osco?
4.
Just have to add I LOVE Dr Pepper but why dont thay make it in a diet version???
they do, here, and it's very good. Tastes more like real soda then any other diet pop (that's all I can drink) want me to ship you a case? :D
5. I've never tried it either. Most of the stores have signs that say "no pets" on the entrances anyway, but the big Menard's and Home Depot's...hmmm....they dont have any signs. Maybe I'll try it. The worst they could do is tell me to leave.... I always wanted to train Freebee to act like a seeing eye dog, and walk in with sunglasses with her leading me, just for fun. I was also amazed at high small a 90 lb. yellow Lab can curl up. There was one on the plane last trip to Portland. Owner was blind. He managed to curl up small enough to completely fit in the bulkhead portion of the plane, which is up near the front. I was amazed. They let them on the plane first, and people were calling and talking to the dog, and in typical training, he ignored everyone. didnt get up, just lifted his head and wagged his tail a little bit. One lady actually complained!! wanted to know why THAT dog could come on the plane, but her's couldnt. She was told this was a guide dog, by Federal law they cannot be kept out of anywhere the owner can go. Her comment? "So WHAT? It's still a DOG....." duh.....
6.
“A quick and sharp tap on that smartass little nose put him in his place.”
this was a description of how the dog was behaving at the time, and what I did to stop him from biting me. I didnt dislike the dog, and I did take his owner to task for it. I have large dogs. I have referred to the Foxhound (in these posts) as having an "annoying bay", "damn countersurfer", "sneaky", "a wimp".... I have referred to the Lab as "untrustworthy", "intolerant", "not safe around kids/strangers"...... these are all descriptive FACTS about my own dogs....does that mean I dont like large dogs either? it's a human trait to make less-then-nice commentary about something that has aggravated you. I have made some about my son...does that mean I dont like him? I personally feel this has been taken way to personally. It was never meant as an attack in general on small dogs. Just one persons "rant" (as stated in the title) and other peoples opinions on the subject.
7. why could you not show a deaf dog? I could see it could be a problem in field trialing maybe, but show? If she was strongly trained in hand signals that would work. When I watch dog shows, I rarely ever hear anyone say anything to the dog. They usually use treats and the lead to get the desired results. OK maybe you dont want to breed it, but I dont understand why you cant show it....
8.
If your friend insists on keeping a choke collar on her dog at all times, STRONGLY suggest she buy a snap bolt and clip the two rings together. This will prevent the dog from catching the live ring on something and choking itself. Of course the dog could still catch the collar and twist it, again choking. Of course a choke should NEVER be left on a dog, only on when a human is attached to dog via a leash.
exactly what I was going to say. The risk of choking is very real. My X always left a choke on Jarvis, and it got caught on the chain link fence. I was fortunate my neighbor say it and came and got me. I dont use them myself any more, I have halters.
9.

hunting is not exactly inhumane, providing the hunter is skilled. With today's high powered hunting rifles, it's easy to kill the animal instantly, with one shot. I dont however believe in siccing a dog on the animal, except to trap it or corner it, but not to rip it apart. that is truly inhumane.
Agree. Problem is that some hunters aren't skilled and there are also problems with culling eg with past kangaroo culls here in vic. I have nothing against hunting provided it's done as humanely as possible. The drought coupled with a huge roo population have resulted in culling by shotgun. however the hunters weren't the best and many poor roos were left to die agonising, prolonged deaths, and the baby joeys of the slain mothers (absolutely no discretion in the culling whatsoever) were of course unable to fend for themselves and either starved to death or ended up food for other predators. :x Not to mention the cruelty of siccing a dog onto another animal, what if the dog itself gets injured? I don't know a lot about pigs but they have very nasty looking hooves! And a trapped kangaroo can do a LOT of damage to any animal who gets too close.
that gave me the shudders. That's exactly the BAD side of hunting...especially culling, since they seem to let anyone do it, not good hunters (probably because they dont want to). I agree it needs to be as humane as possible.
10. thanks Anne. and Hmm? I am trying to the best of my ability to avoid any more "sniping fits" on this forum. theres been too many of them. I try to see both sides of the story, and smooth things out when I can. Bear with me, its not a personal assault, just trying to "keep the peace" as it were...
11. DAL that sig CRACKS ME UP!!! My Lab does that...looks like nothing will ever upset her. Lays on her back all her points showing, feels totally secure...
12. no I think she's mad at the situation, not at you. She gave you a "good jb DAL" its aggravating to see and hear, but you did your best and I AM PROUD OF YOU!! 8) 8) 8)
13. NOOOO! not Ol Yeller!!     I watched that movie once, when I was young, and cried for days afterwards. The poor dog did what it could to protect it's people from the bear. Rabies is a horrible thing. When they had to shoot it at the end, I cried non-stop....It was such a realistic story at the time it was filmed, before rabies vacs were necessary for dogs. Anyone who doesnt think they need to vaccinate their dogs should watch this flick... :( :( :(
14. anne, correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I have read I believed you meant "chaining out and leaving", not just tremporarily chaining out, or deliberately chaining out, which Hmmm does. Hmmm has a unique situation, wherein Pit Bulls tend to get into dogfights with no provocation, (none that most of us might see at any rate) and they are strong enough to break standard tie-outs. With 30 of them, I believe that chaining (although I still hate the heavy chaining, but have been told that with some dogs it is necessary) is a good way to keep them from hurting each other. They do have a history of fighting. Hmmm appears to be making good human contact with them, they are not chained out and left. Please understand, that I am asking if what you meant was "chaining out and left", which is how I took it. Hmmm, I think you reacted a little too strongly to Anne's post. She was just asking for opinions. And maybe her question irked you, but she is still entitled to ask. Try to keep things peaceable, people. we may disagree, and that's fine, but we shouldnt make the disagreements personal. I understand why chaining may be necessary for you. But its not necessary for most of us, and we all disagree with chaining a poor dog out and leaving it there.
15. p.p.s. the police dog that got stolen by the moron in Chicago (he stole the squad car while the dog was in it. Got about a block after being bitten repeatedly) Was a Czechoslovakian Shepherd. 100 lbs. Straight backed, sturdy, wide head, strong legs and back, very powerful looking. In my opinion, that's how a shepherd should look. Alert and ready to do it's job, even if that's only walking beside you on a leash or playing ball.
16. p.s. I think Zeus is adorable. I just LOVE those ears.... :D :D :D
17. I too believe tha all dogs, working dogs especially, should be able to perform at least the MINIMUM job standard that they were originally bred for before they can show compete. I believe the breed clubs are ruining some of these breeds, like the shepherds, and the Goldens, by breeding for a specific "look" instead of a combinations of looks, temperament, and viability at their job. I dont like the way they are making the Goldens look today. I had a Golden when I was young. He had a wide square head, medium golden color, big bright eyes, the typical Golden smile. His flanks were left long and fanned, and were slightly lighter than his coat. Same as his forelegs. and of course, the tail. Today, they seem to be more streamlined, and the coats are too yellow, almost white. Also, the body coat is much longer than it used to be. They're more like a long haired yellow lab than the goldens I remember on the farm/kennel I worked at. Mine was a purebred, although he bred for the Seeing Eye, and the "rejects" were sold as pets. He was an excellent dog, temperament wise, trainability, a real love of a dog. And he could retrieve anything you threw for him, without any formal training. Once something was thrown, he would run after it, and soon learned "bring it here". It took maybe three lessons. Same with Free, who is a lab/pointer mix. Not show quality, but can retrieve anything, and points, without training. I really dont think the dog clubs are doing any justice by these dogs just trying to make them pretty for money and ribbons.
18. WOO HOO DAL!!!! good job Zoey and Cody!!!
19. no one here said they dont like small dogs. I like ALL dogs, big small and in between....if they're trained well, not aggressive, not snappy and yappy. I dont care much for the owner of the two Chi's next door, who puts them oout at 6:00 a,m, then they start to yap. He doesnt bring them in until about 8:00 p.m., and they yap the whole time. Yes, that is the owners fault. I dont like big dogs who are aggressive and snappish either. All dogs require a certain amount of training and socialization, to be considered good, enjoyable dogs. All dogs should know at least basic obedience. But I told everyone here that when I get old, and can no longer handle my large hunting dogs, I would like to get a papillon. I'm sure that's spelled wrong...sorry. I'm sure it will sit in my lap and be spoiled, but not to the extent that it will EVER be allowed to snap, lunge or nip anybody.
20. hunting is not exactly inhumane, providing the hunter is skilled. With today's high powered hunting rifles, it's easy to kill the animal instantly, with one shot. I dont however believe in siccing a dog on the animal, except to trap it or corner it, but not to rip it apart. that is truly inhumane.
21. I too, will never take sides with PETA...The PetCo here, at least, does not sell dogs or cats, does sell reptiles and fish, occasionally ferretts, and brings birds in to be looked at for adoption. They used to sell rabbits. ALL of the cages for these critters are clean, there is food and water, and the cages are meant to mirror their home living conditions. With heat lamps, blacklights, misting, etc. Maybe this is an exceptinal Petco, I dont know. But I'll tell you a horror story about PETA. They went to a convention where seafood was going to be served, and they BOUGHT all the lobsters from the vendors. They then releaed these lobsters back into the Pacific Ocean, WITHOUT REMOVING THE RUBBER BANDS USED TO CONTAIN THEIR CLAWS!!! They ALL drowned, and started washing back on shore the next week. They bought these lobsters with "donated"money, from their sponsors and idiots who trust them. THEY ALL DIED....anyway. I dont think PETA knows anything at ALL about animals, except what they want people to believe. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I put these people in the same league as Sue Sternberg. In it for the power and the glory, nothing else.
22.
They eat just as good as I do. Frapuccino and Pop Tarts (pastries) in the mornings and Dr. Pepper and doughnuts in the afternoons. They share it with me. 8)

You don't know what a pizza bone is? You simply haven't lived unless you tried one. It's just a weird term for the crust of the pizza. *G*
*whew* ok then my dogs get "pizza bones" too...
23. I dont hunt, and everyone I know who does is a bird hunter. My Foxhound hunted fox before they retired her, but I have never heard of "pig hunting"...not around here at least.... I know a lot of people who hunt deer, but they dont use dogs for that.
24.
That must of been a real "Oh S$%t!" moment for that guy. :D
got that right!!!   you gotta figure, do you really think punching an attacked trained K9 dog is gonna make him STOP???? I'd think he'd just get even more p***** off and bite harder! now for the justice. The guy's original charge would have been robbery, for stealing the purse (which may have had 20-60 dollars in it anyway) a 2000.00 fine, probation and community service, top sentence. NOW he is charged with: 1. 1 ct. Robbery 2. 1 ct. Grand Theft Auto 3. 2 cts. Criminal Damage to Property (squad and building) 4. 2 cts. Assault/ Battery on a Police Officer (the dog is considered an officer), which is a class X felony. so for maybe 50 bucks, instead of scrubbing graffiti off of walls, he is now looking at HARD jail time.... **Darwin Award!!** :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat:
25. I submitted this to the "Darwin Award" website....you want some truly funny reading, go there. It has a list of all the "awards" given to people who did truly stupid things, for truly stupid reasons....
