1. y'know, they say that dogs only accomplish the intelligence level of a three year old. I could argue that point, with both of these.... A three year old wouldnt know to distract mom so they could eat her dinner... a three year old wouldnt know that getting up at 3:00 am and waking mom would let her let you out, so you wont go in the house, only to be skunked... A three year old wouldnt know that excessive barking and growling would let mom let them out, to find the problem....and it turns out to be a possum....while mom is standing there with the cell phone ready to call the police.... grrrr.....
2. So Laurel is standing here looking forlorn and lost. I look under the desk, her bone is gone. Figuring freebee stole it (AGAIN!!) I leave my dinner and go out into the living room to retrieve it. It's not there. I come back, and there's Laurel, EATING MY DINNER!!! :o :o
3.
AAAHH we know how Peaches feels...there are times when we howl and rip things up in a tantrum because we want our HF back too :)
I AGREE!!    I'm sure she misses you and is just adjusting. You have a way with animals that some people take longer to learn. that's all. I wish you could keep her. She already loves you apparently. But you gotta get your ankle back in shape, not much you can do without it. 8)
4. that makes perfect sense. Children are the same way, they tend to behave better when they know you're watching them. How many moms have stumped their kids by walking in on them doing something bad (usually because it got too quiet all of a sudden) and the kids demand "how did you know?" and like me, most of the moms I know answer "I have eyes in the back of my head"...(I dont think that answer will ever die down). To which mine once replied, when he was older "yea, but they cant see through walls, can they?"
5. ok so I had to look. There's Laurel Caverns, and even funnier, Laurel herbal, a member of the BAY leaf family...     wont be any Freebee's, since its spelled differently... :fadein:
6.
Collie would explain the eyes, but it does seem weird that the dog would turn out looking exactly like a dobe, but keep the eye colour of the collie.
well, maybe not. The reason I say this is because Free looks almost exactly like a purebred lab (she's in my avatar) to someone who is not familiar with labs. but she is part shepherd, and part pointer, yet she looks like a lab. also, when they're puppies they look different then they do when grown up. when a puppy, Free looked exactly like a lab puppy. So Moody could be part dobe, part weim or husky, and just taken the majority of her looks from the dobe. does that make sense?
7.
I think you, Kyle and the dogs should have a party in the backyard with ALL of you wearing pantyhose on your head.
GOOD IDEA!!! I'll have Kyle wear his gearhead rags, and we'll put grease on his hose, and I'll get fishnets and wear those...and then we'll really make her nuts playing Willie Nelson's "Mama's dont let your babies grow up to be Cowboy's" over and over and over....
8. it didnt work for freebee either. a friend has one, and she just launched right through it. I had her on a 20-25 ft lead fortunately, for the test. some dogs are embarassed. Laurel wont go if you're watching either...
9. My neighbors seem to run in two rules...the nosy, watchful, "gotta have their hands in everybody's business" type, and the ones who couldnt care less if you're murdering people in your house. It's a very odd (and old) neighborhood.....This particular lady doesnt like me, and the feeling is mutual. The other people who called AC thought they were justified...One saw my dogs chasing each other through the fence (and it looks pretty riotous, altho its harmless) and the other heard Laurel baying and thought she was in pain. I was ok with the second one, I got upset about the first until I realized, altho they were being nosy, they thought they were trying to help the dogs. Alot of people here convinced me I was getting upset over nothing in that case. This lady complains about everything I do. or rather, everything Kyle does. and the thing that really drives her nuts? He plays country music out in the garage, and she cant stand it. Now her house is around the corner and about 5 houses down, but since our yards connect in one corner she can sometimes hear the music. It's not loud, I've walked down there and to the far corner of my yard, and you can hear it, but its not blasting. She hates country music, and has actually come over and told him to turn it off, which of course he didnt, because he's a teenage boy. I kinda get caught in the middle....She also doesnt like that he's a gearhead. He's always working on things in the garage, and on the driveway, and it seems like everytime she sees him he's covered in grease...She actually asked him once if he ever bathed, which I thought was completely uncalled for....oh well. I avoid her, and so does he for the most part. I dont know if she actually called a vet or not. I havent heard back and I dont care if I dont...
10.
Oh well, let her tell it. It'll make her feel better, AC will get a laugh, and Laurel will still be able to run around with stockings on her head. _________________
amen to that...
11.
I think she's right! I know you are secretly abusing these dogs with panty hose when people aren't looking and now you've been caught!!!! I'm calling the panty police on you!!!
thanks DO.. that made me laugh. I am SOOO sick of my neighbors.....
12. One of my "yard neighbors" (our yards all link up, although our houses are on different streets), and one I dont particularly care for (she thinks I shouldnt have two dogs and two cats. she doesnt like "big dogs", and HATES cats, I should get a Newfoundland. Totally spazz her out) saw Laurel out in the yard with her every night pantyhose on her head. For the unknowning, she has bad ear infections, and the Blue Power Treatment, and the hose, meant to air her ears out, are working wonders. She camescreaming over here asking why I am abusing my dog by putting pantyhose on her head. I honestly think she is looking for a way to get my dogs taken away, since she doesnt like them. I explained the hose, she said she didnt believe it and would check with a vet in the morning. I said fine, do that.....**sigh** I wish I had enough money to buy a farm and have NO neighbors...
13. Ohhhh....I HOOOOPPPEEE your police do lost/found....poor puppy. Hopefully someone is searching for it, and the PD may know who. I agree with K, in absense of a garage, do you have a bathroom, basement, crate you could keep him in? even a crate would be good temporarily...baby gate him a a seldom used room? Like Seij said, blue eyes could be part Huskie, Aussie or Dane...does it have long hair? or sjprt hair like a Dobie? Dobie ears or something else? I would love to see a picture. Blue eyed dogs are so striking....
14. oh Mutts.....I know how you feel. I dont live in the best area of the state either (illinois) and things like this are not uncommon here either. Gunshots in the middle of the night are not unusual. As for the "kid", he has no excuse. he's not a kid anymore at 21. I am certain this isnt the first time his uncle has complained about paying for the dog, and now with puppies, he's probably fed up. He is just as guilty as the shooter, for "ordering" it, but the kid didnt have to comply either. we allknow the mother should have been spayed, but thats besides the point now. If his uncle was that adamant about it, he could have taken them all to a shelter. For that matter, he could have tried to get a job, unless there is something seriously wrong with him. If for nothing else, to pay for the dogs. He is an adult at 21. This is one of those situations where I again insist there should be mandatory spay/neuter for any dog that's not being bred, by a licensed breeder, or shown. Same goes for cats. especially for cats. I feel for you Mutts. It's hard to see this crap day in and day out.... :x
15. what are the symptoms of Lepto? I've heard of it, but never really investigated it....
16. very nice Kat!! I have never seen your picture before, and I FLIPPED when I opened your site. You look almost exactly like my sons girlfriend!! (who I suspect will eventually become my daughter-in-law) I had to do a bunch of triple takes!! :o  :o  the site is very clean, easy to navigate, and fun to look at. Here in the States, as a general rule, you cant "officially" start working until you're 15, with a workers permit, but there are always some exceptions. farmers kids, kids who's parents own the clininc, or the store, will often let their children work as early as 11. So really, Staffy, there was no reason to insinuate Kat was lieing. She's in Ireland, and their laws may be quite different from ours.
17.
but they are both pedigees it should have worked
       OMD thats cracking me up..... maybe its because they're pedigreed it didnt work....maybe she felt she was "better" than him.....     either way, its a good thing she is spayed now....
18.
Wild dogs are excedingly resourceful - they would be hard to keep out
I was thinking the same thing. The wolf range in Brookfield Zoo (near Chicago) has triple fencing on top of buried concrete, I believe I read 30 feet high, so the wolves cant dig out or get over. then there is about a 15 foot "open area", and then another set of fencing to keep people away from the range area. Wild dogs could finagle their way under standard chain link, especially if there was dirt and not cement, quite easily. I agree though, why hasnt the county or AC done something about the wild dogs in the park? I would think they are a danger to people, as well as animals....especially that close to the zoo......that's so sad about the gazelles.... :(
19. Oh they're beautiful. Scooter looks a little like Ford...is Blue a Siamese? she's beautiful too.
20. p.s. who was that person who popped in and said (s)he'd been banned but was back? and seemed very rude about it?
21. uh oh.....there seemed to be a lot of gaps in thisthread and now I know why. what happened please?
22. I guess the no pull harness didnt help then? Sorry..... you gotta do what you gotta do HF....If you cant handle her physically to walk her (til your foot heals) maybe dont walk her? I think you said you had a fenced yard right? Do whatever feels right to you. Sometimes these things just dont work out.... best of luck no matter what you decide. 8)
23. well. its not really a pointer noise. The bay is unique to hounds. I have a foxhound. The bay sounds kinda like a cross between a howl, and a long drawn out bark. Hounds bay in a certain tonal ranges, because they carry far in the wind. The purpose of the bay is to alert the hunter that the prey has been found. A short, clipped bark wont carry long distances. The bay carries a long way. IE my foxhound would bay if encountering and cornering a fox. Foxes are fast, human beings on feet couldnt keep up with them or the dogs. Foxes are hunted on horseback. so the dogs could be quite a distance away from the hunter when the quarry is cornered. Thus the bay. the tone is carried long distances on the wind. its a unique sound, not to be confused with a wolf howl, or a coyote yip/howl. the wolf howl carries long distances as well, and the bay is actually derived from it. However, not all hounds bay. especially mixes. it depends on circumstances and scent, and hunting instinct. a mix might never bay.
24. definitely call the police. here, AC turns their pet cases over to the PD when they close, in case someone calls. Its not like that everywhere, but its still worth a shot. 8)
25. did you call the police and/or animal control? around here, most people call the police when they lose a dog, and it gets turned over to AC to investigate. The owners may be looking for him now. Also, check with the vet. Lots of times people call the vet when their pets are lost. I was able to return a lost yellow lab to her owners by calling the police. She hadnt been reported yet, but I gave them my number and 20 minutes later they called back and said the dog had been reported lost. The owner came by to get her. Its worth a shot... thank you for taking her in.
