1. Laurel is a field trialed Foxhound I adopted at 6 years old. from a rescue society. she is amazed at the cats. WHY do they climb in boxes and bags? WHY do they push little plastic things across the floor? WHY do they attack my tail when its wagging? ITS SO FUNNY!! Everytime the cats do something she doesnt understand, she comes to me and whines. EXPLAIN THIS PLEASE seems to be the question... the other dog, the Lab is like "Oh get used to it". (raised around cats) but she just doesnt understand...
2. my reply: If all of that is true, then you have been had by a slick kid with dollar signs in his eyes, nothing more. His house being clean is no big deal, his mother probably cleans it. The puppies parents dont live there anyway. He has advertised to ANY breeder to acquire puppies....those are mixed breed puppies he is selling as "new fad purebreds"....he added the shelter section to his site after receiving tons of flak.....regardless of what his house looks like, or his vet says, he is a puppymiller and nothing more. You cant create medically fit dogs without certification of known inherent problems so they can be prevented. as for your answer, I find it insulting that it's the same canned response to everyone. Did you somehow think we dont talk to each other? I personally will not buy PEOPLE magazine after this article. There are SO many dogs already in shelters, and all this "whiz kid" is doing is adding to their number. Consider yourself boycotted.
3. I got the same canned response. I think they are just sending it to everybody who emails them automatically, which means they are getting a lot of negative email. I too cant wait til they get the petition
4. there was another one as well. a dog with no front or diminished front legs, who learned to walk on his hind legs. I wish I could remember where I saw it...... :o :o :o :o
5. They cant close them, sadly. They are not actually breaking any laws. The State of Florida has tried. The Humane Society has tried. The ASPCA has tried. They keep their animals in "borderline" condition, which is considered "good enough" under current law. "Borderline" meaning they feed them, keep them reasonably warm, and give them water and shelter. In most places, that's all that is required. sick, isnt it? I'm sure there have been many petitions against this place, over the years. Everyone who loves animals hates them. However, since they have broken no laws the petitions go nowhere. They cant be closed except legally, and there are no legal grounds, under the currents statutes, to do it.
6. I only stated that because blood cell counts are usually used fo infection, and nothing else. You cant fin diabetes with a blood cell count. I would ask what he tested for...
7. if they tested for white and red blood cells it was probably for infection. your white blood cell count gets higher when there is a baterial infection, which is what a UTI would be. (I may SOUND like a doctor, but I am a diabetic. we need to know these things) If she continues to urinate in an out of the ordinary fashion, I would ask them to do a blood test for diabetes. Its not common in dogs, but can happen. If she is borderline, you may not notice a major change in water intake, but urine outake would increase. If it turms out to be that, (I hope not) I will help you with whatever you need to know..... :D
8. I TRIED (really, K, I DID) to restrain myself. I couldnt. I emailed the editor as well. this is SOOOO bad. they are ENCOURAGING people to do this!!! Have you been to a shelter recently? Ever? Writing this story and advocating this kids "breeding practices" will do nothing but add to the number of dogs already abandoned, given up and unwanted, that live in CAGES in SHELTERS. With minimal monetary support, mostly volunteer staff, and begging constantly for the bare minumun of things necessary to give these animals homes. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? Good breeders dont take two dogs and mate them, to produce a "cute little puppy". True breeding takes generations, health certification, eye and hip certification, all the things this kid is NOT doing. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?????? Do you WANT these dogs to end up at the neighborhood pound or shelter, gassed or injected to die because NO ONE WANTS THEM???? Good Lord, man, think about what you have done. You have opened a complete can of worms for anyone who wants to make a buck to do it by breeding dogs. These are LIVING, BREATHING creatures, not disposable knick-knacks...and there are way too many of them with no homes, no love, no place, in all the shelters worldwide. YOU are compounding the problem!! Katy Courtney Elgin, IL. DOG LOVER
9. it's possibly true that the kid knows no better, but PEOPLE should. They usually research their stories fairly well. not in this case, so I added my ire to the fire.... do you have any idea of the AWFUL can of worms you have allowed to be opened here? these are PUPPYMILLS!! not decent breeders, who care about health tests, breed quality, certification for eyes, hips, etc. You have given them Carte Blanc to mix any two dogs together, call it a breed, and sell it for enormous amounts of money with no guarantees for the health and welfare of the puppy. Honestly, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Take a stroll through your neighborhood shelter. There you will see the end result of puppymillers. dogs given up, because they didnt turn out "as expected".....
10. Does she seem extra thirsty two? She could be a borderline diabetic, which would cause excess thirst and urination....what did the test the urine for? Usually they do blood tests to check for diabetes...
11. rewrite it if you like, to make it ryhme. I only want to get the word out. I want people, especially at Christmas, to see the plights of these poor animals, locked away, given away, no longer lovd. It breaks my heart.
12. actually, DO, I had to do a makeshift "repair" on my Golden, since it was Sunday night and the vet was closed, and back in those days Emergency Vet clinincs were few and far between. He got his leg ripped open by a nasty, ill bred GSD, who's owner acquired him to "protect her", because she liked to sunbathe nude in her backyard....  anyway, he got out and attacked my Golden, and for the first and only time in my life, I hurt a dog. I kicked him in the head to make him stop. He ran off, but Taurus' leg was slashed and bleeding, and it wouldnt stop. I sterilized a needle and sewed him up. It was with sewing thread, but it worked, and the vet said I did a good job.
13. feel free. If it makes people cry. and LEARN, I'm all for it!!
14. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEG!! :bday: :bday: :bday: :bday: and Kat, I am TRULY sorry you are seperated from her. She should be yours.
15. I have gotten rave reviews on this poem, from the shelters and such I have given it to. I have been told "It makes people cry..." which is what its supposed to do. It also makes them THINK! I know some of you, like DO, work for vets, and shelters. If you can, please post this as the holidays are approaching. I wrote it from the heart, and have been amazed at the difference it has made. It was never meant to be anything but my love for my dogs, but I let HELP have it and they say it has made a vast difference. They had me copyright it. So feel free to distribute it wherever you can, if you think it will help. My only requirement is that the signature be on the bottom, and that it not be sold. Christmas is Coming… Christmas is coming, it's that time of year, where everyone offers each other good cheer. Where presents are opened from under the tree, Children are smiling, and people are happy... But not far away, in 'most every space, are pets gotten rid of, unwanted, displaced. Their sad little faces stare out from a crate, They don't understand why their owners are late. They don't understand why they're in here at all, they patiently wait for their people to call. The call doesn't come, as the lights are shut down, They don't understand, they just want to go home. So this year for Christmas my wishes will be that each of these creatures will get to be free. To go home with someone who'll love them at last, and give them a chance to forget their sad past. And me, as I write this, I look at my two... the scared silly Foxhound, my Lab/Pointer too. And I think of how lonely my own life would be, If for some reason they were gone from me. I give them both hugs and then call the old cat... who of course doesn't answer, gee, imagine that! I tell them I love them, and I always will. I'll feed them, and keep them, from winters cold chill. and I promise them that they will never perceive the inside of a shelter on MY Christmas Eve!! ~Katy~ thanks everyone. hope this makes a difference...
16. well, that didnt work, but if you go to the site you can see some picturs of cow-hocked wolves...
17. that's the best picture I could find to demonstrate the cow-hocking in wolves. average life span is 6-8 years, but there are of course exceptions. Solitary wolves are actually quite rare (lone wolf) and only occurs when the wolf has been ousted from the pack. Outcasts generally try to join other packs as low ranking members. A true Lone Wolf doesnt usually last long, having to feed on small catchable animals, and leftovers from other kills.
18. all of my dogs up to Freebee have been male, and never once did anything like that happen.....seems very odd......
19. that's true Kat. For some reason I was thinking "spay". For something as relatively simple as a male neutering, this should not have happened! :o
20. how VERY cool!! The lady with the lab just found out the hard way that they dont train themselves, as many people believe. They can be very stubborn dogs and often require a firm hand in obedience. Thats just so wonderful for the little girl! I hope she takes her certificate over to the other school and waves it in their face!!
21. I also have hardwood floors. The back door is down a small flight of steps off the kitchen, and both the kitchen and the entryway are tiled. And yes, the dogs know to stand still and get wiped off as well. For the mud around the corners, I resolved that by digging it up and installing round patio bricks, like you'd see going across a lawn to get to an entrance. I have the same bricks on my front yard, going from the driveway to the front steps. It actually looks nice, and it saves a lot of mud in the house, from both pets and kids.
22. thanks everybody. he seems better today. He's meowing, although not as loud or "hearty" as usual (I think he's part Siamese, he's quite a talker) but he doesnt seem sick or depressed or anything. He's laying on the floor by me washing himself right now. Nothing out of the ordinary....I tend to panic a little about him cuz he's 16 years old now.... :fadein: no, no horses. I had one when I was a teenager, who kicked my Golden cuz he got too close....he appeared totally unharmed, and my mom said that was cuz he was such a thick-headed dog....
23. sprains/strains hurt more than breaks. believe me, I know (having had all of the above) glad he is ok!!!
24. reminds me of Prince...the "artist known as" whatever...I dont have that sign on my keyboard...
25. I wouldnt do that...people will start naming their kids AMEN now..l..
