your grandparents have spoiled your dog, to the point where he thinks he is more important than you in the pack. THEY need to follow YOUR rules about the dog. Sometimes you have to be bitchy about these things. I know I DO with my son and his ideas....

Multiple dog ownership isn't for everyone
courtnek replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Everything about dogs
if Peaches is as thin as you say, you are NOT overreacting. If she cant handle a high energy dog who needs multiple feedings, then she shouldnt keep the dog. its as easy as that. couch potatos are easy to take care of. High energy dogs are not. I have two couch potatos, who also have the run of a huge yard, so energy expenditure isnt as issue. HF, you need to take Peaches back, AND care for your ankle. best of luck. :) -
PushyC@t's way....he's not getting better. He is not sick in any way, but he is not gaining weight and appears to be getting weaker. They cant find anything wrong in his bloodwork, he's just old (17). I am not ready to lose him...I know its probably his time, but other than his weight and the weakness he seems so healthy.....it just doesnt seem like his time is due...

Jusst a question about temperments of different breeds.
courtnek replied to imported_Matty's topic in Everything about dogs
you're right I was trhinking of Greyhounds for some reason. But I've never met anything but a docile Dane either.....sorry. I'm really tired. I suppose it all depends on how they're raised I guess. -

And I am a big fan of NILIF, and she got upset when I explained it to her, so I'm not going there....
Court, what are her kids like if NILIF upsets her :-? ?
thats the odd part. She is very strict with her children. They are required to obey..... she seems to think the dogs will grow up to be great with no assistance however... -

I didnt know that about Dane's either. Thats never something I have heard and everyone I have met is a big goofy puppy at six feet tall.... hmmmm.....I can believe that when they're young they're not couch potatos, they need to run, thats what they were bred for. But all the ones I have met were rescues from races. Maybe thats why they were all big goofy puppies, they were trained and had plenty of exercise...gee, imagine that. A good natured dog that was trained and had plenty of exercise..... :D :D :D :D -
they can pull muscles, get strains and sprains just like we can. Maybe when she was hopping around on the bed she just landed wrong and twisted it. They get over these things much faster than we do. hoping everything is ok with her.

I agree Kat. She's gone beyond just being annoying now. I would contact the admins at those sites and report her. and the fact that she stole Meg's pictures and tried to pass her off as her own.

the Petco b y my house sponsers adoptions, but the rescue societies wont let you take the dog home that day. You have to fill out the App, then they question you, and tell you they will call/email you with a decision. they work with the local shelters, and not do much the HS, because the HF is in Chicago, and we're in the burbs. Getting Laurel was almost as hard as adopting a baby....I had to fill out a 5 page app, give them all my experiences with dogs, I talked to them on the phone 5 times. I got them to agree to accept pictures of my yard and house instead of a home visit, since I work all day and they dont do home visits on night or on weekends....they were mostly interested in the fence since hunting dogs are escapists....When I went to meet her I had to take Freebe with, to see how she'd react. I asked if they wanted me to bring the c@t too, and to my surprise they said no, let them meet through a baby gate in your house, where the c@t will feel less threatened and more in charge. I already knew that was the right answer. I think they let me slide on a lot of things, because of my experience with dogs. It would be a lot harder on a new dog owner, I'm sure....

dogs like baby carrots, but doesnt Boonie have teeth issues? corn would work, no real nutritional value but filling. green beans are ok. french style would work with the teeth issues....green vegetables have less calories then most of the other ones.

Drug dealers keep dogs so they will have dog in heat.
courtnek replied to imported_Matty's topic in Everything about dogs
it wouldnt matter if the dog is a professionally trained drug dog. Most of them will ignore any other scent but what they are looking for, especiallyif neutered. Its becoming commonly accepted to neuter drug dogs for just this reason. But the myth persists with the dealers. Many of them have been slammed for just this reason, they thought they were safe. -
you will start seeing changes with Rescue Remedy in about 48 hours. The dog will seem calmer, actually almost sleepy, but dont worry about that. Zebra will still need desensitivation, but the RR will help calm him in the meantime. Once he gets calm, tyou can start rewarding him for staying that way for longer stretches of time. Once he is desensitized, you can discontinue the RR, but keep some on hand for Fireworks days...

I agree with all of that, and now for the other side of the coin. I cant even begin to tell you how much I cringe when I hear someone say "I'm going to get a lab because they're great housedogs and great with kids", which translates to "I believe all the crap I read and this dog will train itself, and I can leave it on the floor with the baby/toddlers/etc and it wont hurt them ever..." NOT!!!!! NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT!!!!!! Labs CAN be very good dogs.....when trained and disciplined properly. Without all of the above you end up with a spoiled, hyperactive, dangerous dog. They are great with kids, when supervised. They dont chew up the furniture, unless they are bored and lacking exercise. They wont bowl your kids over, unless they arent trained to sit on command. They wont run away, unless of course you didnt neuter them, train them on recall (GOOD recall...hunting dogs will take off after the first interesting scent if unleashed and not recall trained VERY WELL)... it just makes me stark raving CRAZY!!!! I have a friend who has two of them. She's clueless about training. The dogs take off, nipped one of her kids, bowled them both over, steal things off the table....I asked her why she didnt take them to training. She actually said "I thought they didnt need to be trained...the breeder said they are very good dogs....." I put her in touch with a trainer, because we would stop being friends if I trained them....they need a LOT of work now. And I am a big fan of NILIF, and she got upset when I explained it to her, so I'm not going there.... AARRGGGGHHHHHHH :o :o :o :o :o -
I have to agree I think something scared him, maybe a noise that is totally familiar to you (so non threatening) but scary to him. Did a car backfire? tires squeal? you may not even remember it happened. Of course I agree with Kat to get him checked out, loss of vision or hearing can make dogs act weird. They think that Laurel has some hearing loss, and that may be contributing to her mostly irrational fears. Other than that, with irrational fears, you just have to take it slow. Go outside with him and sit on the lawn. Dont make a big deal out of him if he seems scared, thats just reinforcing that the fear is ok. Just sit there and talk to him as quietly as you can, starting with 5-10 minutes and moving up in time from there. Read aloud in a quiet, gentle voice. watch for signs that he is relaxing, and then praise him and treat him. It will take some time, theres no way to convince a dog with words that all is ok.

I dint know what kind of training is required, but you;d have to understand doggie behavior, be able to spot potential "non get-alongs" ahead of time, and you'd need insurance. And lots of it, just in case. The place you rent would have to be zoned for the keeping af animals, the property would need to be kept very clean, as well as the inside, and you'd most likely want a place out of the way of residential areas and eating establishments, because of the barking. You'll need permits, and a site inspection, every year. I would check with the better business bureau, for places in your area you could call to get more info.

I must be way behind in my politically correct terminology then. I have never heard of "Travelers", or that Gypsies was an incorrect or insulting term.... :o :o :o

My poor boss, Christmas at the grooming shop is heck.
courtnek replied to imported_Cassie's topic in Grooming
the groomers by us are all booked. People want to get their pets bathed, brushed, cut and "prettied up" for the holidays and company. The vet I go says her groomer is about to have a nervous breakdown. Think of it kinda like a hairdresser. Everyone wants the one they usually go to because they know how the cut will turn out. -

well, in age order - Pushy @at - black and white american shorthair - 17 years old. Acquired from my ex-MIL, who seemed to adopt/buy animals just to get rid of them a year later.....   Freebee (Free, Fruitbat) - black lab mix (GSP and some GSD, we think) acquired from an "ooopss" birth. The woman was trying to sell them as Purebred GSD's...When I pointed out to her that GSD's DONT have floppy ears she gave her to me for free. 7 years old Laurel - Purebred Foxhound. Field trialed for 6 years, then given up for adoption to a rescue society called HELP. She has been adopted out before, but brought back. She has issues, her worst being intense fear of people, which she is slowly getting over. 7 years old. Ford - A kitten my son got from an "oopss" litter, who was named after the color of the owners pickup truck, which is the same color grey as the kitten.   My son insists he is "Built Ford Tough" so the name has stayed.....5 months -
he's very pretty...how does he seem around the other dogs? sometimes you have to be careful with Pits and other dogs, but he seems gentle enough right now.

Kat, what are "Travellers"? Do you mean like Gypsies, or something like that?

Its a club for children.Stands for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Its an organization similar to the boy scouts, planned activities, teaching, community service, and agriculture. They have adult projects too, like taking kids to senior citizen homes, babysitting for singlt mothers, charity organizations, etc. The Seeing Eye often places puppies with 4-H members for the early socialization with people and other animals, before they are old enough to start being trained for service work. If you are interested they have a website that describes their charter and the work they do. I find it hard to believe that they would be encouraging this person to breed puppies, since a big part of their charter is animal welfare and agriculture. They do allow the kids to choose projects, and decide what kind of project they want to do, so maybe she chose one with animals and embellished it some. One of the things they used to do was let the club member watch animals being born, even puppies, and then had them care for the mother and the pups, etc. I dont know if they still do that or not. Most places are trying to get away from teaching childbirth this way....I dont believe they bred the animals tho. Farmers will often let them watch livestock being born, and get their assistance for the birth.
