so I go to the neighborhood quickie mart for a few things. I park my car, and see the car next to me has a chocolate lab in it. I say "Hey, Pup" and he goes ballistic. ok he's guarding the car. no biggie. my lab would do the same. I walk towards the door, and the owner comes out and SCREAMS at me for bothering his dog. I said "all I did was say hello..." and he goes on about how his dog never acts that way when he's around. and I said "he doesnt react when your in the car because he doesnt have to protect it then..." and he called me every name in the book...said I better not ever jack with his dog, etc... geez.....

here its 12 weeks. I have never had one have a reaction to it, but some people may have experienced otherwise... it can make them somewhat groggy the next day, but thats all I've ever seen in 32 years of dog ownership....

it doesnt have to be a regular leash...get a short metal tie out and use that instead. unless your pom has super teeth, he wont be able to chew through it. attach it to our waist while you're in the house, keep it at no more than 6 feet, and when you get up and move you say "come" and then he has to follow because he's attached to you. treat him when he does this of his own volition, after he gets used to the idea. also, get a longer one...(say 25 ft or so) and do the same thing outside. let him wander off, then call him back. if he comes willingly, treat him. if not, gently coax coax him back with the lead. he needs to learn that instant obedience means a treat. if you have to tug him to get him back, no treat. do not make this a game of wills (dont yank if he wont come, and dont pull if he stands his ground) but make him feel that coming to YOU is the best thing in the whole world. he'll get treats (good ones, this is the most important lesson of all) lots of praise in a high pitched voice, and petting. belly rubs, whatever he likes best. this is one command you cannot afford to not enforce. good luck. he may very well grow out of it, but I would still do the training and keep him leashed or on a lead until he does. 8)

I hadnt posted a pic of Ford since he was tiny...and since I had told a story about him I figured I'd get the picture on too. I didnt think anyone would object...... yea sometimes with my pictures they have to be pasted fromproperties into a different browser line....not sure why.... :o

you need to leave Zeus in for the time being, as hard as it may be. these kids wouldnt take a dog unless they had plans for him. sell him to a research lab, or make him a target in a fighting ring. please! keep him inside for now, and report these stupid damnable kids to the police, with the best descriptions you can give!!! :o

safe and sound. two days before he was "done" hes a big baby..wants his belly rubbed when he's not trying to escape!!!!!

he could have visual or hearing problems as well. Laurel has both, and she alerts to every little sound or sight....I think they overcompensate when they have issues like that. maybe a vision/hearing test is in order? :o

pelts look bigger than the animal that wore it. think about it a minute...the pelt covered the whole animal, nose to tail. now its spread out across a flat surface. Bear skin rugs always look bigger then the original bear.... it may be some weird breed or breed mix, but I myself cant identify it.

*sigh* sometimes you have to learn the hard way...

thanks DO. Pushy is hangin in there...he is eating c@t food again (but only fish food. he will barf chicken or beef) and getting tuna and salmon as well (someone told me salmon is high in taurine, unlike tuna) and he is eating his dry food (which I am relatively sure is really providing most of his nutrients) but he hasnt gained any weight. he hasnt lost any more (thank God) but he hasnt gained either. other than the fact that he is really skinny, he seems fine. he is happy, and moves around fine, can jump up on stuff and stands up to Ford's BS like he does with the dogs. the vet continues to look after him, and will see him on a moments notice (she is SUCH a sweet lady) but he seems to be doing ok. I just wish he would plump up a little, but he is 17 and some.. 8) -

he was sneezing for a few days, but he's back to himself now and STILL TRYING TO ESCAPE!! (damn c@t!!!!!) but hes back to being the big loving goofball he was..I paid special attention to him and he's ok.... -
there seems to be numerous issues here. he could have a hearing, or even a visual issue. my hound is going blind and doesnt hear all that great, and is afraid of my son. because he is loud and moves too quickly for her. she has gotten better once i got it thru his head what he needs to do, but from what you're saying, you're trying too hard. you're stressing and he can feel that. they sense things we have no clue about, trust me. when my son decided to stop yelling around Lore, and stop trying to make her like him, she suddenly started to. if you need to bring him in, dont call and stress and get upset. put a small leash on him, bring him in with soft tones and "baby talk", then let him go about to do his thing. the less hard you try to make him like you, the sooner he will. :fadein:

Fun question to the multiple-dog families
- She taught Zoey to find her voice- Trust me a hound voice pretending to be a husky is not easy on the ears.
       a hound being a HOUND is not easy on the ears....mine is 65 lbs and bays like she's 95 lbs.... the neighbors are all scared of her. they think she's part wolf when she "howls"....    -
my son is pet illiterate. I'm a failure... he left the window open to his room last night, the ONE window in the house that doesnt have a screen (that I have been ragging hom about since last year). Ford got out. I got up this morning, and put out the food, Ford didnt come (UNHEARD OF!!). I made him get up and look with me...he was on the roof. he had gotten out the window last night, and poor kitty, spent the whole night on the roof. he didnt know how to get down. Kyle coaxed him in with food, but now he is sneezing and looking miserable... poor kitty. can I smack my 18 year old son upside the head? thats not child abuse right? he's an adult now...

Help with final project (warning K added offensive pic)

you want to make it powerful? go to those sites (and I think some of them havebeen posted here) of dogs being euthanized. left is buckets to be taken away after euthanasia...once you post your statistics, show them what happens in real life... -
I have had this happen with Free. My response to "oh, my dog is friendly?" MINE ISNT. and if YOURS get bitten, I have a cellphone and will call the police. and YOU will be in trouble because there are LEASH LAWS here, and your dog is NOT obeying them.... they usually gather up their dogs ad go away, mumbling (or bitching) in the aftermath.... :evilbat:

oh HF I feel for you. everyone and their brother seems to think Free is a petting post because she looks like a Lab. I tell them(sometimes repeatedly, mothers with kids are the worst offenders) "She is not comfortable around strangers. Please do not approach her head on. If you want to pet her, come to the side where I can stand between and introduce you" and what do they say? "Why is she so nasty? Labs are nice dogs. has she been beaten?' SHES A LAB MIX...and NO she hasnt been beaten. on the other hand, they all seem afraid of Lore, who is scared of everybody and wouldnt hurt a fly.... *sigh*

good lord...could a name name make that much differnce?
courtnek replied to courtnek's topic in Everything about dogs
I guess I should explain it huh? LOL I have always made a point of never giving my dogs common human names. Alex came named, and that was ok, but laurel, well I have a friend named Laurel, and its just too human.... the only kinda human name I ever gave a dog was Jarvis (pretty much unused nowadays) because he was marked like he was wearing a tux, and reminded me of a butler...Jeeves would have worked too, but I liked Jarvis better....I prefer names of old Gods and Goddesses, sci-fi characters, or just plain weird, like Freebee and PushyC@t.... If I ever get another black c@t and its male, it will be named Spock... my pet names as follows through many years: Taurus (Golden, first dog) Isis (black cat) Luigi (foster tibetan mastiff, I didnt name him but if just fit) Rassilon (foster IW mix, named after a sci-fi character) Freebee Alex (didnt mind that name, it seems to fit for a large powerful dog) PushyC@t Laurel (now Lore) 8) -
It's pretty simple really. Alot of people believe that a dog's metabolic rate slows down slightly after it's been spayed or neutered. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. I'm not even sure what, if any research has been done on this subject, Either way I don't really have an opinion.
in some cases that is true, which is where the whole "speuter makes them fat" line of thinking came from. speuter doesnt make them fat, but some dogs require less food intake afterwards. if they dont need as much food due to a metabolic change, and you keep feeding them the same amount, yes, they will get fat. Free had to have hre food cut back after speuter...Laurel did not. oh, speaking of Laurel, I have never liked her name. I tried changing it to Lauren, but she wouldnt respond. she WILL respond to Lore, so thats her new name!!! 8)

there are vets here who do tubals, because they think a hysterectomy is "unnecessary surgery" I dont agree and have made an issue here about it. it seems extreme on the front, but if the dog is never going to be mated, she doesnt need the uteris, or the fallopian tubes, and cancer is a real possibility....

DARN!! I wanted to wave my magic "everything will be fine" wand over Lucky, but I got here too late....    glad it all went well!! 8)
