Kat, I will say one thing and then let it go, if thats what you want Meg chose YOU. she ran from the ring against orders and rules, and licked you. she loves you, and nothing this ahole can do will can change that. YOU should be showing her, and not HIM... he would see that if he could get over his obvious fascination with himself. His wife is a wimp. she wont take him on. feel free to print this and give it to them.

my lab ate something out in the yard the required 700.00 in surgery. why do they do that? I have caught both of them chewing on socks. keep the laundry out of reach now..

dont feel bad. I know how this goes. I have to avoid *strangers* *dogs* and *small children* when walking Free. she is not friendly to any of the above, and I dont want trouble. some people get offended and say "whats your problem? she's a lab after all....." NO, shes not. she's a lab X, and the X part of her is not Labby at all... I too have had people be rude, actually calling ME a bitch because I wouldnt bring her closer to play with their dogs/kids. when I tell them she isnt friendly to dogs/kids, they then ask what I did to make her this way....Labs are always friendly...etc....

Free remembers my X even though she only sees him maybe once a year. I have read that the sense of smell is by far the biggest memory enhancement in humans. people remember things from early childhood just by smell, and babies recognize their mother by smell before anything else. so a dog, who's sense of smell is a bazillion times better than ours, I cant see them not remembering the smell of someone who treated them kindly and they loved.

if the walk will raise money for the shelter, than I would do it. Our shelter here holds walks every year, and I go. the shelter is in an old run-down building, clean, but obviously marked and stained by years of animals, and they use the money to fix leaking windows (its cold here in the winter) and doors, and re-paint. the shelter has no central air (radiant heat, no duct work) and one year we did the walk to raise money to buy and have installed wall mounted air conditioners in the pet areas. both summers and winters here are brutal. I donated an old window air conditioner for the office (the expensive wall mounted ones went to the pets at the directors insistance) and they send me thank you cards every summer...

well, using dogs as a deterrent depends on a couple of things. what in your house does the burglar want? Now these burglars are breaking in because they're being paid for it, but in a real scenario most burglars will avoid a house with a dog unless there is something specific inside they want, like original picasso's, or priceless antique jewelry... then, no matter what kind of dog, it wont stop them. they'll just kill it with a silencer and be on their way. but the average home break in, where they plan to steal tv's and stereo's, a dog making a lot of noise will generally deter that. not every time, but more often than not. the reason is not that the burglar is afraid of the dog, bit of the noise the dog makes. in some situations, the yappier the better. burglars dont like noise, its why alarms drive them off, because it alerts neighbors that something is going on and they may call the police. for an insignificant haul, its not worth the risk, especially if the house 4 doors down has no dogs, and their neighbors have no dogs. did the Pits even bark? these tv burglars knew going in what kind of dogs these people had. and a good burglar knows what dogs are likely to bite and which ones arent, if there is something inside he is determined to have... which makes me laugh because Free would throw them. if they could get past the nasty bark-and-bay fest these two go through, they would discover Laurel hiding under the desk, and Free, the Lab X that looks almost purebred Lab, standing there threatening to kill them if they moved. NOT Lab-like....she's an ace in the hole.

Kat, just curious...how did Meg actually DO at Crufts? I know you have posted that when you ran her she took high honors. and that could be the whole problem, and why they have slammed you. you trained her, she responds to you much better than to him (in all of your pictures of her I have never seen her looking so dejected) and now suddenly HE runs her and she doesnt do well? who better to blame it on then you, since you werent there to defend yourself. I would definitely contact your friends and people at Crufts and tell them what happened. maybe nothing legally can be done, but they may have quite a bit of influence over this situation. and Kat, we're all here for you, no matter what.

You folks must think Im a right nutter relaying all the problems here :-?
Is there a better place to do it?
no better place. Geez, Kat, I am SOOOOO sorry.....when you're a little less stressed, I would definitely put together a list and letter. If you send me the info, I'll do it for you. It will be easier for me since my emotional involvement is not nearly as strong as yours. I send you lots of <hugs> through this....

does that make me a small dog? My baby teeth had to be pulled because they were blocking the adult teeth from coming in, and just WOULD NOT fall out....

I have always introduced all of my pets thru a baby gate. they can see, smell and sniff each other without making contact. may need a double gate in this situation, but I feel its better than a closed door between them. also, the scent of the c@t on a blanket is a good idea, let Buck get used to the scent. as far as the yard, until its fenced, you can put out a runner. a long steel cable attached to two solid surfaces (like a house and a shed, or fence) and then put buck on a six foot lead that attaches to the cable. that lets him run but not escape the yard. you do have to watch to make sure other animals dont enter the yard however, but its a good exercise tool for the fenceless yard.

if you cant vacuum, there is a grooming glove you can get. my cats and dogs love it. its a glove with plastic nodules on it. ou pet the critter and the hair comes out. ou then just pull the hair out (like outta a brush) ad contine. they love the "petting" feeling.

oh HOOOWWWWW sweet!!!! that made me cry.... :fadein:

Free will lay on her back with all four in the air, perfectly content. thats actually a good sign. they feel safe enough to roll over in their own homes and dont fear exposing belly or neck. in a pack that would be considered EXTREME submission, usually acompanied by urinating. but my dogs both do it, they're not afraid, just comfortable. Free will also lay on her belly with her front paws curled under. to me, since my wrist WONT bend that way, it looks extemely uncomfortable. doesnt seem to bother her though.

puppies are a pain in the arse, and lab puppies are no exception.....in fact they can be worse because of the huge energy requirements. for biting, I found with Free (part lab) that a squirt of bitter apple straight onto her tongue, after a loud and angry NNNOOOOOOO!!!!!!! got her to stop. she was not responding to positive reinforcement during her biting stage. I tried the yelp, the head turn, the "bad dog" and head turn...nada. she kept nipping. I knew she was teething, so after I squirted her with bitter apple, I would make her lay down, I would then call her, tell her to sit, and give her ice cubes wrapped up in a towel. she would chew on them and it eased the teething pain somewhat. dont give the cubes until after she has served her "down" session, or she may see them as a reward for biting.

R ated eeeew but dare ya not to laugh
courtnek replied to BuddysMom's topic in Everything about dogs
there was a book written back in the 70's called "The Happy Hooker", where she devoted a whole chapter to her sexual exploits with dogs. My sister kept reading passages from it to me. (Gee, thanks sis...) Legally its called "Beastiality"...and it must happen fairly frequently for there to be a law written for it... I guess the dog is ok, as long as he wasnt hurt, but she really needs a psych eval.... -
I am sorry Nookie, but this was nothing less than irresponsible. wherever did you get the idea you could walk dogs without leashes on a street where there is traffic? they dont come born with recall, and even good recall doesnt work on some dogs, the hunters and the hounds.... and perhaps "you're only 15", however at 15 I took full responsiblilty for my dog. washed, walked, fed, groomed. the whole nine yards. now maybe you had no control over your parents sending a dog to a shelter, but you certainly had control over THIS. and I certainly hope you learned something from it, so Didi doesnt suffer the same fate. there is a maturity required to raise and keep a dog. I dont think you're quite there yet... not trying to be mean, but this COULD have been avoided. I hope you learned something from it.

dont feel too terrible. you didnt do anything worng, you just had "bad" customers.... oh and the lady with the lab? I wonder how long she's had it. A lab (esepcially black) with a properly cared for coat ALWAYS looks wet, because of the oil that the skin produces to proect the coat. if its cold by you the dog will actually look wetter than usual, because the colder (and wetter) it is, the more oil the coat produces. tell her that if she comes back. my lab x is always mistaken for being wet, especially in the winter.

you oughta send it to Michael Bryant. he NEEDS a heads up...

this is why I think there should be heavy jailtime for cruelty to animals. dogfighting is against the law in most places. they should be charged with that, and with 26 counts of animal cruelty, or however many the total number of animals were, and serve TIME. REAL TIME. :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: on the wing with real animal lovers.....

my email I currently dont own any of the dogs on the list listed as "dangerous"...but what if I wanted to? My lab Mix, yes, Lab mix, would bite someone in a heartbeat to defend me. do you realize that the most recognized biters are Cocker Spaniels? by CDC records? this kind of legislation is just WRONG. The dogs only know what they have been taught, what they have experienced. Please do not allow this BSL to happen. It really isnt the dog, its the people raising the dog. The dog is only a product of the home life it has experienced. Much like children who go astray because of their home lifes. PLEASE! do NOT allow this to happen. none of my dogs have ever bitten anyone. I am a responible dog owner. this legislation punishes responsible dog owners, and leaves the criminals with an open field to choose whatever dog they want to be the "macho-dog-of-the-week... --

it might be in your best interests to bleach the crap outta the yard, even if it kills the grass. so sorry HF. hope all get well and remain that way....
On Wednesday, HB1128 was defeated in the Illinois House Committee on Agriculture and Conservation by a vote of 9-6. The bill would have repealed an existing state law that prohibits breed-specific dangerous dog legislation.
so if the law already exists and was not repealed, are the people that she posted about now out of luck? or are they trying again to get this law repealed?
