1. if he had a tapeworm, he was eating much more than usual because the worm sucks up all the nutrients, and he had to compensate. as much as you may not want to, dont leave the same food down for three days. if he doesnt eat it, take it up after half an hour and cover it entirely in plastic if you dont want to throw it out.it may be unappetizing now that its sat there so long. start at 1/2 a up, and put it down. if he eats it allgive him 1/2 cup more. if not, take it up. you will figure out eventually how much he truly needs. 8)
2. he is a sweetheart....I have seen GSD's from other countries, like Blegium and Germany, that had huge ears like that. they do grow into them somewhat, but their ears are still much larger than American GSD's.....
3. I dont know anyone personally, I remember reading about the sheep... the procedure is something like taking the animals cells, and growing them, in an entirely sterile environment, with the correct nutrients, it simulates the birth process. the entire animal is grown in a womb-like environment and eventually "born" when full grown. but the sheep, the cloned one did not survive very long, not as long as a sheep should have lived. there is something wrong with the process that they havent figured out yet. there is something in the natural birth, or the cell structure, or enzymes that they havent gotten right yet. I would be afraid that if I cloned a pet, it wouldnt live as long as a regular pet....
4. very nice. you have talent. with some art classes you could make a career out of it. to freehand something like that shows talent, that just needs a little practice to become excellent.
5.
I simply dont believe you would get the same dog back again...and how could you with rescues?...you would have to be able to re-create every second of thier upbringing to lead you to the same end result....right?...
absolutely correct, scientifically, not just my opinion. pets, like people, are the combination of nature and nuture. some things are inherited, like eye and hair color, skin tone, etc. alos, medical soundness or lack thereof. some personality traits are believed to be inherited as well, such as stubborness. however, personality is molded mostly by day-to-day experiences. so if you wanted your cloned puppy to act exactly like your nowmoved-on dog, you would have to recreate the exact same situations that the old dog was brought up with throught its entire puppyhood. and even then, there is no guarantee the cloned puppy would act like the old dog. there are toomany variables involved. as far as cloning in general, I think certain parts of it could be good. cloning organs that need replacement, curing disease, but not entire people, or pets. that scares me. there are SOOOOO many things that could go wrong with that, and too many evil people in the world.... :o
6. I have seen people who dyed their poodles red/white/blue for 4th of July, and put little flags in their collars and stuff. I actually think its cute as long as the dye is harmless....and for a holiday or a special occasion I see no problem with it. I 'accesorize" Free when I walk her. She has a HUGE red bandanna around her neck that says "Do not touch me...I am in training" to drive off the "OH LOOK! IT's a LAB!" attitude that seems to prevail around here....at least then they stop and ask before letting their kids run up to her. I tell them I'm training her to like people.....
7. that he does...his dad says its my fault.....
8. not going there in general, but as far as bonding, some people dont bond with some dogs. its not a bad person, its not a bad dog. its an incompatibility, which is not as unusal as people think. we easily accept that there are people we dont agree with, get along with, but it can happen in doggie ownership as well...the "chemicals" arent there. this is not a bad thing, if you can accept it up front. if becomes a bad thing when you cant, and cant accept that this dog is not right for you. I honestly feel that some of the abuse we see is because of this. I also feel that if you, being here and knowing dogs and how to interact, feel this way, its better to rehome the dog. dont flame me, but I've seen it happen way too many times...
9. sorry Ickle..thread drifted to the worst time of the month topic...
10. ok I have two large dogs, a lab X and a foxhound. 75 and 65 lbs. not giants, but considered large. they are in the back yard, fenced all the way around, and out front a 6 foot privacy fence that looks at a fairly busy street, thats why privacy and so high. in front of that is about 30 feet of my front yard, before you hit the sidewalk which belongs to the city. so, I am in the house, my dogs are in the yard (they have been inside all day and now get their play time outside since I'm home) and my son is out in the detached garage. the yard is in between the house and the garage, the fence goes out all the way to the beginning of the front of the garage. and the yard goes back 80 feet behind the garage and the house. so, I'm making dinner, and watching the dogs out the window, when they both go running up to the gate (on the privacy fence) and start barking. not really unusual, since they will bark at people that walk by on the sidewalk. I see bits and pieces of a gold dog (through the slats in the wood privacy fence) right up against the gate, and the dogs are barking at it. not nasty, just barking. then I hear a guy yell..HEY YOU, KID, PUT THOSE DOGS INSIDE BEFORE THEY GET OUT! HUH? they CANT get out...the gate is padlocked, and neither of them can jump it.....my son comes out and says "why is your dog off of leash? there is a leash law in this town, and not only is your dog off of leash, but you are standing on OUR property telling us to put OUR dogs in from our own yard? Get OVER yourself, and get your dog off my lawn..." well this guy gets his undies in a twist and starts yelling that his dog is perfectly behaved off leash, and has never left his side before, but MY dogs must have done something to make her break her excellent training.... (yea, like BARK maybe?) I entered the fray at that point...asked him why his dog was offleash, since it is illegal in this town, and he actually called me a number of nasty things and said his dog didnt require a leash EVER, until today.... OK I should have been nice, maybe, but after the abusive language I said "Ok here are your options. Put your dog on a leash if you are going to walk past my house, or GET OFF MY PROPERTY...NOW..." and I took out my phone and told him I was calling AC. an hour later, AC shows up here and says I threatened him and he reported my dogs as vicious, because they attacked the fence to get at his dog...which they didnt, they were just barking....fortunately my neighbor next door had seen the whole thing, and he stood up for me. so what do I do with this guy? I did tell them his dog was offleash and ran up to my gate, and they checked the yard and the fence and padlock and said everything was in perfect shape....but now this guy is PO'd.... sometimes I hate people.
11. we love you HF, and your ENTIRE brood!!!
12. healing thoughts from Laur, Free, PushyC@t and Ford.... hope all turns out well...
13. ok I'm old...THANKS GUYS... 8) I'm not getting mine anymore...mentalpause has set in (that is not a mistyping, got it from "All In The Family") and yes Mei, I too remember the whole RNP fiasco, and I too defended him..until K pulled out the facts she knew and set us straight.
14. I think even K has, in the past, made mistakes wih her dogs. she doesnt make them now because she has learned from them. as we all do...
15. it becomes even more complicated in hounds, as I have been learning.. (Laurel is a study all onto herself.... ) sighthounds see some differences in color, because they are bred to sight. scenthounds do not. Laurel is color blind, sees only in black and white. but her nose makes up for it. she only needs to see that the prey she is tracking is moving, and that prey is determined by scent, not sight. she will chase that prey by scent, whether she can see it or not is irrelevant. bloodhounds are also color blind, and depend on scent for everything they are tracking. they dont have to see it move, they will follow it by scent alone (and like Laurel, bay their fool heads off. would any of US like to know there was a bloodhound, baying at our scent, following us? and that they could follow us on scent that was DAYS old?) I think what they were originally bred for may make all the difference... Laurel, after retirement from hunting, was bred to EAT...
16. ok then. If she really doesnt like, and wants to get rid of, the dog in the first place, is it in the dogs best interest to stay with her? If she has said before she doesnt want Zoey, why would anyone argue her point to give Zoey to Justin's parents, who apparently will care for Zoey and hold her until Justins return? It bothers all of us when someone doesnt bond with, or doesnt want a particular dog...should they then keep the dog anyway? or find it a home with someone who could bond with it, and love it better than they can? If Zoey was Justins dog, an DAL cant bond with her, even though she may like her, what is eventually best for Zoey? we tend to say "keep trying"...even when the outcome may not be the best for either the dog or the owner. in this case, the dog will eventually be reunited with the man she's bonded with, and the parents will keep her safe until then. is this a bad thing? sometimes it just doesnt work out...
17. so can Laurel...you have my heartfelt sympathies..give them all a dose of Pepto and hold your breath... (just kidding about the Pepto...) 8) 8)
18. from what I understand, they are color blind by our standards. they may be able to see some form of color (as opposed to all black and white) but they cant see in "shades"...does that make sense? also, red in a black and white world tends to stand out. its not as bright as white, or yellow, and not as drab as blue, or grey. its somewhere in the middle....
19. I dont BK. that should have said "unless" instead of "until. for that I apologize. but by your own post you acknowledge that everyone's response to certain situations can be different...why cant DAL's? 8)
20. Hillside, I am not slamming you, but I can see by your previous post and also your sig that you dont believe DAL should do this. I have been divorced, and I can feel her pain in this situation.it really isnt about Zoey at all, its about making a major life decision, and all the repurcussions that come with it. Perhaps you dont believe in divorce. Perhaps you feel (and I get this thought from your sig) that military men in action should never have to go through this...being a military wife is extremely difficult for some people, just like being a cops wife. your mate is in harms way all day every day. some people simply cannot handle that. fear eats you up inside. Perhaps never getting married would have been the best thing, but how mature were any of us at 19? would I wish she could work this out? yes. Do I accept the fact that she cannot? also yes. please dont judge her till you've walked in her shoes. simply put, some people simply cannot be miltary wives. Do I wish her original decisions in getting married at all were better? yes. Can that wish stop this? no. give her some slack, and let her go on with her life. there is no point in staying united with someone who you no longer love. that causes more harm then good. and as far as support, I personally cant think of any issue where she didnt at least listen to what I had to say. she may have disagreed, but I can accept that, and not take it personally. there is no one on the planet who will absolutely agree about everything. thats what makes us all unique. whether it becomes a battleground depends on whether the opposing parties are willing to agree to disagree....
21. ok I have to say this, in DALS defense...how may of you have gone thru a non-amicable divorce? I did, and the dogs werent the issue. my son was. people get stupid in these situations, and nothing will change that. she appears to have found a decent home for the pup, she cant take the dog with her. I almost lost my HOUSE due to my ex not paying his child support...divorce is nasty and ugly....but sometimes it has to happen. Should she spend her life with a man she no longer loves, and no longer wants to live with, bcause of the dog? should **I**have, because of our son? I dont think so...none of us know the whole situation. dont be so quick to judge unless you've been there please... be real people. shit happens. sometimes you have to do the best you can in the WORST of circumstances...
22. Kitty, dont take it so personally. K has owned dogs for practically forever as I have. the longer you have them, the more you learn. My dogs dont nip, as soon as they start I stop them. they let me take their food away. they get nothing outside of NILIF. they sit, they stay, they dont go outside until they've earned it. it's one of theose things that comes with time, and experience. she (and I) sometimes get intolerant of people who have been given the best advice, aquired through experience, and still argue about it. K's post was not a personal attack, nor is mine. there is something to be said for personal experience, that book learning wont tell you. 8)
23. does anyone know WHY they are bred with those skinny skinny heads? they look totally out of proportion to the bodies, as thin as they are... what was the purpose? 8)
24. were WAY TOO LONG....I let them go for too long, so I took her in to be clipped. they guy was very nice, and sold me on scissors clippers that work well on hard-as-rock completely black nails.... the dremel he tried failed miserably...she paniced as soon as he turned it on... they had a whippet adoption going on....I did not know that whippets were raced, like greyhounds... Laur played nose greetings with the whippets, who were all very cordial and calm...hounds are SO cool....then a poodle mic showed up, and started barking at her. at first she seemed startled, then started baying. Loud, very loud...I can easily see how this trait was developed in hunting hounds I swear you could hear that bay for MILES....not good in a store or enclosed place.... I kinda walked away mumbling "Scent hound..she bays...sorry, I know its loud..." the whippets all stood up and stared at her.....
25. good question...I would yell NO in a very firm voice, and then forego the walk, remember, the walk is a reward. run him thru standard obedience as a reminder. sit, stay, lay down...etc. then treat him when he obeys and try to put the leash on again. if he again tries to nip, standard obedience again. this is sounding like a stubborn dog, and needs a firm handling to stop this. he still hasnt accepted his demotion. if he does not comply, then demotion may be necessary after all....
