Hey Pyr......Here's our big white goofball! He's a trip....we get a lot of second looks because of him. A lot of people have no idea that GSDs come in white! News on Tater's homecoming....
ObedienceGrrl replied to ObedienceGrrl's topic in Everything about dogs
I think it is just this woman. There is no one close to me to do a home visit. Tater is in Indiana, along with the head of our region. Everyone is so understanding.....but no on knows what to do!! She just has a lot of personal issues right now....but you would think that if she knew she had them, then she wouldn't have offered her services. She became a part of Crest-Care 1 week before I found Tater. Who knows......The regional coordinator keeps saying how badly she feels that Tater hasn't gotten to his forever home yet but there is just no one around us!! So hopefully some other orginations will step forward and help me out! -
The Potential Puppy Owner Test
ObedienceGrrl replied to ObedienceGrrl's topic in Everything about dogs
PPO must leave 3 Huskies alone in his home, uncrated, for 3 hours. PPO is allowed to cry upon return.
I just think this is my favorite......it's just so true! -
I found this on Unicorn Chinese Cresteds. Judy is a very nice breeder in Florida and she let me post this for everyone! Here is her site....she has lots more goodies on there!! http://www.unicorn-chinese-cresteds.com/ The Potential Puppy Owner Test Are you truly ready for a dog? This is a test that every Potential Puppy Owner (PPO) must pass. After passing, the PPO will be given a license to begin learning about the breed of his choice. No physical force, yelling, or cursing is allowed during the test. Protective clothing or soil-proof clothes are not allowed. Small wounds and scratches are to be handled in a blas

Ya know.....they get into our pills.....but trying to get them to take there own is like trying to snuggle up to a greased pig on crack! I have to wrap in meat, cheese, peanut butter....and still, I get a soggy pill that has to end up being forced to swallow. By the end, I have broken a sweat.

Wonderful news!!! He gets an extra cookie tonight before bed!!

Personally, I think there is nothing cuter than doggy hiccups!!!

Okay....so it looks like the woman who was supposed to do our home visit is having all sorts of personal issues. She hasn't been in contact with anyone due to this. So.....it appears that they will be going outside of the rescue group for the home visit. There is an all breed rescue by me and I think someone from there will do it. Also, I told them that the people from Doberman rescue seem sweet, too. So who knows!! But....we are still patiently waiting......and waiting!!!

Congrats to Judy and Kira! Can't wait to see pics of the mommy and babies!

Call the police too....a lot of people call them when they find a dog. Since some shelters are not available 24 hours a day.....the police are the first ones to get a dog, then they will transfer it to the shelter in the morning.... Keep searching, sweetie....you are not a bad mommy and you know it. Accidents will happen.

Euthanization question??? the dog left behind.
ObedienceGrrl replied to imported_Matty's topic in Everything about dogs
We didn't have Scooter with us when we lost Shadee.....nor did we have Shasta with us when we lost Scooter. But each time, we did bring home the blanket we had wrapped each dog in for the dog that was at home. The reaction was different for each dog. Scooter was devestated. I do'nt know what hurt more. The fact that we had lost Shadee.....or watching Scooter. Scooter would take Shadee's toys and sleep on them. As many as she could grab and hide, she would. Also, when we brought her cremated remains home, we had planned to bury them in a box with her collar, favorite toy, and plant a weeping cherry over them. Well, we weren't going to pick up the cherry tree for a few days, but still burried her remains. Scooter laid on the ground above them for days. It was awful..... Shasta was upset when we lost Scooter, but she recovered much quicker. Scooter and Shadee were closer in age. Scooter being 10 at the time, and Shadee was only 8.5. Then we got Shasta.....so her and Scooter were almost 10 years apart. We lost Scooter 6 years later. I believe they greive.....just like we do. And I also believe they need some type of closure. We did that with the blanket.... -
Maybe this link can atleast get you started! http://www.barkbytes.com/sclubs/waclub.htm It's just something I found on a quick search.....

It all depends on the dog. I do know quite a few dogs who will just charge through it. And once through, they won't come back in. Why would they want to be shocked twice? Also, it keeps nothing out of your yard. Anything can get into your yard with your dog. Other animals, kids, people....and that makes me nervous. But again, it depends on your dog. Let's just say it would make me nervous with my boys.

Doberfanatic said just what I was going to say! Try a club. I belong to Columbus All Breed. I pay a yearly membership of $85 and I can take as many classes I want, any night of the week, with any dog. It doesn't even have to be my own! They have agility, obedience, conformation, flyball, clicker and a few more speciality classes.

But dry eye can cause ulcers and spots of irritation on the eye itself. I am not sure if Afghans are prone to dry eye....I know some breeds are, such as Cockers and Chinese Cresteds. An eye will be extra teary if it is dry and irritated. I know it sounds funny.....but as the eye gets really dry, it starts to produce 'reflex tearing'. Just massive amounts of tears to make up for the poor quality ones it was producing. So it makes quantity.....not quality. It's hard to explain!! I do much better with my diagrams at work!!! I hope everything works out well.....we ran into a bad ulcer with our white GSD a few months back. Lets just say the opthalmologist was very pleased when she saw my treatment plan and how well he was doing! But he will always have a scar on that eye....and we use artificial tears now and then....because his cornea will always be a little weak in that eye now.

Does anyone add yogurt or cottage cheese??
ObedienceGrrl replied to ObedienceGrrl's topic in Nutrition
AAP.....I find it by the regular yogurt. It just says Plain on it. Not Vanilla, just plain...And typically it's in the BIG containers! I did spill a little on the counter and I wiped it up with my finger and licked it....and man....plain is the correct word!! But the dogs LOVE it. It has ZERO flavor!!! -
Yes.....we all now know Victoria's Secret. She wants us to put trouser socks on our dogs!! Oh....the horror!

Okay.....so then this sounds to me more like a dry eye problem, correct? Fuchs' corneal dystrophy wouldn't affect the front layer of the cornea. There are several layers to the cornea.....each can have it's own problems. What are the drops you were given, if I may ask? It just sounds like a keratoconjuntivitis sicca. Or....dry eye. KCS. That's what the staining was for. It leaves a nice yellow tinge to the fur for a while. Do you get an itemized bill from your vet? If so, he should have tested the dog with a Schirmer's Test. This is a tear production test. See if he did that. If it is just dry eye, you can purchase over the counter preservative free tears to use. Make sure they are preservative free, though. There are several brands. Refresh Plus, Genteal PF, Systane PF, Bion Tears. They will be in individual vials.....not in bottles. They are a little pricey, though. So just let me know about the drops, k?

Can you tell me what type of corneal dystrophy? I am an ophthalmic nurse. Was it Fuchs' Endothelial Dystrophy? Keratoconus? Peripheral Corneal Degeneration? Any type of Keratitis? More info please! :) Then I will tell you what it is.

But isn't a Fila used for general protection? So wouldn't you say that is strictly protection/guarding and not outright aggression? Or are these dogs known for turning on their owners because they are so people aggressive? To me.....when I think of a dog that has human aggression, it will bite anyone, family/pack included. And for no reason. Not just strangers for being on or near their property or close to their family.
-
I'm not sure the word you are looking for is aggression.....but maybe protection/guarding perhaps? Take a look at my GSDs. Are they aggressive? No. If you come on my property will they bark and growl? Of course. I had them out back (before it was fenced) and a worker came around back because he saw me. The boys charged him to bark/growl and circle. Can I tell someone who is knocking on my door to just come in? No way. My husband or I need to go to the door first and invite them in. A guy selling security systems actucally tried to push past my husband to get into our house. Jeremy had already told him no about 3 times. The more upset Jeremy's tone of voice became, the more aggitated the dogs became....and when this man tried to push past him, the boys went hysterical. Full show of snarling, hackles raised, and barking. The minute he steped back, they were fine. Would some people call that aggression? I guess to an untrained eye it might be.....someone who knew nothing about dogs could say that my dogs are killers. But people like us know better. We know that certain breeds were meant as gaurdians. Protectors. We have now turned into 'flocks' for many of these breeds. So I guess to answer your original question.....I don't believe that a dog can be bred to be an aggressive dog. I believe you can make one from day one of a puppy's life. No human contact, no love, no affection. No praise, no food, no shelter. Abuse and torture. That would be the recipe for an aggressive dog.

Mal.... I have made these for a long time....and I never use an egg.... In fact, I just made them Tuesday for class. They come out nicely without one....but I do'nt see what adding one could hurt!

Edgar..... Someone needs to tell Tennessee that! Actucally.....Belgian Malinois have over taken the GSD as the number one police dog in the US. And quite a few departments use Rotties as patrol dogs as well.... It just plain stinks!

Martinsburg man arrested after tying dog to train track
ObedienceGrrl replied to Seijun's topic in Articles
Why tie him? Just push him in the path.... jerk.... Why are there people out there who do things like this....then, there are people like us who are willing to spend every penny we have for our kids?? My husband asks me this all the time. -
I totally agree with Kat on that one! The Bergamasco looks much more severe than the Komondor or Puli.
