i just wanted to point something out. i agree that supply and demand fuels the puppy mill/pet store machine. and that breeding dogs solely for profit is ultimately a ridiculous proposition. however, since the pet store caters to the impulse buyer, did it ever occur to anyone that the majority of the purebred rescue/shelter dogs are indeed from that very same source, given up by unprepared and uneducated owners, as after all the pet store will not take a puppy back if it "doesn't work out"? while i understand that not willingly feeding in to the supply/demand structure is imperative, the behavior, temperamental and structural problems often found in rescues are a direct result of the same machine, and we love them all the same, some folks even to the point of being self-congratulatory for rescuing from a shelter that very same pup. just a thought. this is by no means meant to be a blanket statement, just kind of a devil's-advocate point of view. by the way, why is it called an "ori-pei" ? where does the "ori" come from?
Yes alot of em probably do come from shelters. But the point is is that YOU are NOT supporting the pet store/puppymill. You are saving a life, it's not your fault that some impulsive idiot supported that pet store. I'm not saying that the dogs at pet stores aren't great pets, because they are(well sometimes..alot of times they have behavioural issues) but if people continue to buy from pet stores, then puppymills will continue to stay in business and the cycle will NEVER end There is difference between buying from a pet store and rescuing a pet store puppy from a shelter/rescue.
When you get there, you are surrounded by pups who shy from you, snap at you, or are in bad health. The dogs are worse--the are bigger. They bark, growl, whimper in fear, and some are also in bad health. Would you choose one of these dogs to adopt despite the fact that they have nearly no potential as a companion or have a long life of espensive medical attention?
I go to the shelter a couple times a week and i have NEVER had a dog shy from me, growl at me, nor try to bite me. If I could take em home, you damn right I would take one of em home!

Yay!!! finally! new episodes of animal precinct :klacz: I love animal precinct! though I dont really care for all of the animal cops shows lol.

hmm maybe the idioit she got it from had already cropped/docked it?? Did you ask? I think it is the dumbest thing to crop/dock a mix breed. I dont agree with crop/docking purebreds, but to do it to mix breeds :o My cousins has a "lab/rot mix"(i dont see an ounce of rot in this dog, it's definately a lab mix, but not mixed with rot) and the person they got it from docked the whole litter :o

Someone who sells a dog for a profit is not a bad person
Yep. I'm going to make up some pamplets though, so next time I go to the mall I can give them to all the people in the pet store.

I never said AKC was great...where'd you get that?? You're a nut case  I hate the AKC. If people want to know my stand on puppymills and pet stores then they can ask and i will give them exactly what I think.

I'm not angry one bit, i'm sittin back smilin and laughin at you. This is me >
oh..your against peta too....your too much....
Out of the MILLIONS of people I have talked to that love animals..you are one of the VERY VERY FEW that actually support peta. God I think you're the only one on this BOARD that supports peta
-
because people breed for profits..and people purchase them..that makes it OK?? Nice reasoning :o  seriously, i'm done now
-
oh..active with peta..that explains alot  *stepps away knowing it's not worth trying to educate a brick wall*
What You Can Do To close down puppy mills and ensure the safety and humane treatment of dogs trapped in commercial kennels, you can: Encourage state and federal officials to stop the mass production and exportation of sick and traumatized dogs. In addition to passing new laws, legislators can demand that existing laws be enforced. Urge other people not to buy puppies from pet stores, over the Internet, or from newspaper ads. Write letters to the editor about puppy mills and pet stores. Explain the mills' inhumane treatment of puppies and their contribution to pet overpopulation. Visit a local pet store to determine where it obtains its puppies. Don't be misled by claims that its dogs were not bred in puppy mills. Insist on seeing breed registry papers or the interstate health certificate for each puppy. The papers will list the breeder's and/or wholesaler's name and address. Contact your member of the U.S. House of Representatives and your two U.S. Senators, asking them to urge the USDA to strictly enforce the Animal Welfare Act and to support efforts to increase funding for USDA/Animal Care. Members of Congress can be contacted at: The Honorable _______________, U.S. Capitol, Washington, DC 20510. File a Breeder Complaint Form if your new puppy appears to be suffering from a medical condition.
you would rather have them put to sleep....??? well.... what kind of rescues do you have and why didnt you put them to sleep?? what gives your dogs more of a right to live then those sweet healthy puppies? i
there is NOTHING healthy about a puppy from a puppymill. SERIOUSLY YOU NEED TO EDUCATE YOURSELF CAUSE YOU OBVIOUSLY DONT KNOW MUCH
-
 you crack me up. I dont operate a rescue, so i dont see where i'm making money. I took my dogs from the places they were before and gave them all good lives, never got a penny for them and I dont ever expect to(why the hell would i?? :-? ) Do yourself a favor and do a search on puppymills. EVERYBODY that knows about puppymills knows to NEVER buy from a pet store NO MATTER WHAT. and get one thing straight ORI PEIE IS A DESIGNER MUTT, IT IS NOT A BREED NOR WILL IT EVER BE A BREED
-
HAHAHAHA YEA RIGHT. Woodburning is just something I started a few weeks ago and i've been on this site for about 8 months now. All the money I make with my woodburnings goes straight to my dogs. and 15% of all profits will be donated to a rescue of my choice.
-
Nope, you couldnt be more wrong. You didnt rescue these dogs, you only supported what made them. YES I would rather see them put to sleep, it's better. IF YOU SUPPORT THE PET STORES THEN YOU SUPPORT THE PUPPY MILLS AND WHEN YOU DO THAT THEY JUST PRODUCE MORE AND MORE DOGS AND IT WILL NEVER END!! HOW HARD IS THAT TO UNDERSTNAD??
-
I have 7 dogs. They are all rescues in one way or the other, society cast aways. Sorry to say, but the only thing you did when you purchased from a pet store was support them and puppy mills ONLY when people STOP buying from pets stores will the SUFFERING END.
-
Where'd you get yours? If you got it from a pet store, then you supported a puppy mill. If you got it from a "breeder" then you supported a back yard breeder. If you got it from a shelter/rescue then good for you
