But for another: why are you tolerating human aggressive behavior in the Chi? Just becuase he's tiny doesn't mean he can't hurt someone.
That is also true & something I have BIG problem with. I HATE biting dogs, no matter WHAT breed they are & no excuses should be made for any of them. I was recently visously (sp) atttacked by a friends doxie who had bitten 2 other people before it attacked me AND his owner within a span of about 15 minutes. I knew this snotty little dog & it was never overly friendly, it was snappish & growley but never made a move towards me. I walked into their home like I had done a thousand times before. The little snot came towards me barking like usual. I gave him a few minutes to settle down, he came back over for his obligitory heaad rub, I bent down to pet him like I had done every time I visited them & he latched onto my wrist, I stood up, he fell & jumped up & bit me on the knee cap ( I STILL have the scar, whoever says little dog bites don't hurt is full of crap!) Again he fell & I held him on the ground with my foot ( all the while wanting to punt him across the room) until his owner could pick him up. The entire time he is gnawing on my sneaker & trying to get to my ankle. He settled down when his owner picked him up but not long after that latched on to HIS arm & left a horrible bruse & several punctures. At that time I told him he need to put the dog down. He scoffed at me being that he was a small dog. WIthin about 2 weeks he finally decided to do the right thing & have the dog euthanized. Had it been MY dog, I'd be in court right now. Debby
I should change that to say, had it been MY dog I would have euthed it after the FIRST bite. It would have never been allowed a second, but of course I would STILL be in court over it.
Much like a scenthound who turns off everything when sniffing or a sighthound who takes off like a bat out of h*** after a squirril no matter how loudly you scream, or a sheltie nipping at the heels of running kids your dog has been bred to fight and it only takes a split second before it seriously injures another dog. This is why responsible sighthound owners make it routine to exercise their dogs inside fences, and scenthound owners on long lines, because instinct and selectively bred parts of instinct is far stronger and faster than any of us could read. It might be so that your dog never ever attacks another in it's lifetime, but is it a risk you're willing to take? Especially when there is so much at stake?
Very, very, very good points!
i do think primrose words her statements, including that one, very dileberately in order to make very obvious jabs at pit bulls and their owners. although i feel her post was good, that particular statement was uncalled for.
That's all I'm saying, thank you for wording it MUCH better than I did. Debby

She did, UNTIL she got to the "strange little ritual" part of her post. Debby

I agree that we need to be more concerned with our dogs actions and that is exactly what we are telling her to do, not only on this thread but the other one ( too lazy to look it up). I just don't appreciate Primrose's generalized statements about "pit bull people" She wasn't being told it was nothing to be concerned about as Primrose suggests. Excuses were not being made, suggestions on how to handle the dog were being made. :) Debby
I think she IS listening & seems to be very willing to learn more about the breed. I thank her for that! Debby
Lots of pit bull people have this strange little ritual that they go through. They pontificate that it is a hard and fast rule that any pit bull that shows aggression toward people should be immediately put down. But then when a pit bull DOES show aggression toward a person, they immediately start making excuses, like the most pathetic owners of snappy pomeranians. Probably the superintendent is a serial killer in his other life (prove that he isn't, huh? I knew you couldn't do it) or maybe he just looks like somebody the dog had a bad experience with. Or maybe the dog is protecting the owner. Plus have you had a complete physical done on the dog and consulted every "behaviorist" who will take your money?
You post this, but on several posts on THIS thread she was advised to limit her dog's contact with this man, put her dog in a sit stay & work with her in regards to lunging, jumping & growling, have it evaluated. She was also told that a truly aggresseive pit bull SHOULD be put down. All dogs have a tendencty to not like a certain person or type of person. She has stated that the super has teased her dog in the past. If this dog were *human aggressive and a danger to people & the breed I would be the FIRST person to tell her to put it down, the dog doesn't like the super. Why is it alright for SOME breeds to not like a person but a travesty if a pit bull doesn't like someone? You don't like pit bulls, we get it, we don't care. One more thing, not ALL of the people who posted advice or opinions to her ARE pit bull people. edit: *Perhaps I should state an all out human aggressive pit bull, not one that has shown a dislike for someone & is in need of some training to correct bad behaviour. It sounds to me like he deserved it! He knows this dog right? He knows this is not a friendly dog but yet he chose to go into a place he has no business and deal with a dog who does not like him and has been told to leave alone. How did the bowl get broken? While I am NO fan of biting dogs of ANY breed I can understand a dog defending itself. I would be PISSED!! Do the vets know about this guys attitude? Why are they continuing to let this guy work there if they do? If I found out a vet tech at MY vet's office treated my dog unkindly there would be hell to pay, they should thank their lucky stars I"M not a customer there!! :agrue: Debby -

I have 5 cats, (the kittens were from a momma cat that showed up on my door step, they ALL have homes now) Munkee plays with ALL of them with one exception. I have a 9 year old Snow Shoe Siamese that Munkee is TERRIFIED of!! He will not go any where near that cat. If Lil Man is sitting on the back steps & Munkee is outside, I have to MOVE the cat before he will come in the house. Same thing if Munkee needs to go out & the cat is any where near the door. Big bad pit bull that he is. Debby -
Lunging is a definite no no, no way, nope, nada, don'teventhinkaboutitdog! behaviour that you need to check asap.
So true!! Put her in a down stay when he approaches & let her know that even though she may have VERY good reason for not liking him, it is not acceptable for her to act out. It may take some work but she'll catch on. Debby
-
I wouldn't worry about your pitty learning that behaviour from the Chi. My mom had Chi's, one in particluar was NASTY mean to EVERYONE but her. My dad pitties did interact with the little snot but did not pick up any of it's nasty behaviour. IF your pitty does decide to pick up this habit be sure to correct her every time. She'll get the message that it's a no-no. Debby

A truley human aggressive pit bull SHOULD be put to sleep, but from the sounds of things I don't think your dog is human aggressive. Does he wear a tool belt or jangling keys? Try to limit her contact with him as much as you can. My Justice does NOT like people she doesn't know in her & my daughter's bedroom (they share), she doesn't act aggressive towards them but she will bark & carry on & put herself between my daughter (or me) & the other person until they leave or she decides it's alright for them to be there. One night a few months ago one of my daughter's friends was at her window trying to wake her up, instead she woke up Justice who stood OVER my daughter growling until she realized who was at the window. She would NOT have bit, she was jsut saying "hey, I'm here & I don't think you need to be" Debby

I'm SO glad you posted that picture of Chloe!! Now, of course, since you did that I know where you live & I have to stalk you!! Kia, I think your dog is SOO cute! What mix is she? Debby -
I don't think all dogs have to like all people. My dogs are NOT human aggressive in the least but there are people they do not like. Munkee ignores them & Justice will just sit beside my daughter or I & will not interact with the person. There are very very few people my dogs do not like & usually I have noticed they have good reason not to & I shouldn't like them either. Has he ever teased her? Does he knock loudly on your door & frighten her? Perhaps he reminds her of someone in her past who tormented her. There could be any number of reasons your dog does not like this man but I don't think she is human aggressive just based on what you have said. However, to ease your mind you may want to have her assessed or evaluated by an experienced pit bull person. Are there any people at a shelter or rescue near you that you may contact for advice? Personally, since it is the only person that she does not seem to like I would try my best to keep her away from him while trying to socialize her with other men who maybe resemble him. Debby
This seems to be the one "joke" that the pit bull community agrees is just hilariously funny no matter how many times it is repeated. That is, they post a picture of a pit bull not hurting another animal and they then post about how "murderously aggressive" (or whatever) they are. Then they congratulate each other on this remarkably original humor.
I can't believe I have to explain HUMOR to you Primmy but here goes - WE DO IT TO IRRITATE THE CRAP OUT OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU!!!! Need me to break it down Barney style for you??? People with narrow minds insist that pit bulls are dangerous killing machines, we post pictures showing quite the opposite to show that these people have no clue what they are talking about.
I'm not quite certain where the humor is
Somehow this does NOT surprise me in the least. Reread the previous paragraph, notice the Barney Style explanation.
But wait....All pit bulls AREN'T great candidates to have around kittens, are they
Show me which breed of dog is always a great candidtate to have around a kitten.
And if a person has a pit bull around a kitten and the pit bull kills the kitten, the pit bull people are the first to say how stupid that person was for trusting a pit bull not to be animal aggressive, since that is part of what the breed is about and people should know this before they get the breed. Right
If I thought for ONE moment my dogs would not be ok around the kittens they would not be. Did you notice any pictures of my chocolate & white female around them?? Nope. Want to know why? She is NOT good around the kittens, she gets too excited & plays too rough with them therefore she is NOT allowed to be around them. She turned 1 in February & is still a puppy.
I don't see the border collie people going out of their way to post pictures of border collies curled up in front of the fireplace (they must do it sometimes) to imply that it is stupid to think that border collies are high drive, high energy dogs
I'm not a Border Collie person, but if I were one I probably would post pictures of it doing something quite the opposite of what people perceive the breed to be. I NEVER implied that ALL pit bulls were good around small animals. IF you will notice the title of the thread it clearly states that these are MY dogs. Need some more of that Barney style or can you handle it on your own?
But you can't have it both ways: You can't allow people to say that "true pit bull temperament" is to be animal aggressive and at the same time sneer at people who believe that lots of pit bulls are going to be dangerous to other animals
No where, in ANY posts that I have read on this board have said any thing like that. I've also never seen any one on ANY board post any thing like that. Bottom line, if you have a problem with my pictures, DON'T LOOK AT THEM. If you have a problem with my posts DON'T READ THEM. If you have a problem with me tougth shit! It's a shame I don't have more middle fingers!! What breed is it that you own again??? To everyone else: Thank you for all the kind words. My dogs are like my kids & I love them dearly. Debby -
Take those vicious pit bulls off of this board! Just look how mean they are! Poor little dog and cat who are being killed by those horrible beasts!
I know! They are horrifying aren't they?!?!?!?!
Here's a tip that I now use all the time. I buy factory second flat sheets and place them over my comforters. That way, my dogs can sleep with me but my comforters don't get as dirty. I change the flat sheets every other day. And atleast you don't have to worry about drool.
Thats a GREAT idea!
