Oh come on folks, this is getting very disrespectful. Guida is not a troll. Respect her please instead of jumping to conclusions. If she has questions, then lets answer them for her in a mature and respectful fashion, and not label her
But SHE isn't being respectful either- saying people who use crate have sad dogs, calling them "mini jails", etc. is not respectful. There are ways to state your oppinion and ask questions without bashing a method that many use and find helpfull. I think that if she had been a bit more polite and less judgemental in her first post no one would have gotten defensive. :) I don't use a crate, but a playpen which is basicly the same but a little bigger. It is and has been such a huge help with my dog. He gets into mischef all the time and I would be very worried about him when I'm not home if I knew he wasn't safe in his playpen. Even when I'm home I want to know where he is and what he's doing. Usually thats not hard because he is often near me or my mom. But even so he has gotten into several potentially dangerous situations, for example when he jumped up on the counter and got a turkey bone, another time it was a piece of fudge, my cell phone which was on, and once he knocked down a knife. If that had happened when no one was home I don't want to think what could have hapened to him. With him enclosed I don't have to worry, because there is no way for him to hurt himself when he is in that area. The playpen is also great when I need to do something and he's in the way. I have guinea pigs and they need to run free on the floor every day. Sure, I can close him out of my room. But he hates that. Instead he can be in the playpen and watch them, be part of things, but still in an enclosure so the cavies are safe. When I clean having him in it is very practicle too. Web was pretty much housetrained when I got him, but my aunt has a dog who wasn't. That dog has never soiled her crate. She loves it too. If used right crates are fantastic things.

I'm really sorry.

Ok :) Thanks for the advice. :) How much exhuberant running/leaping/playing is bad for him? He loves playing and playing wild, which is fun, but I don't want it to harm him. He also gets to climb/jump up on stones and picnic tables when were out, his trainer says its good for his selfconfidence  . Could that hurt him? He has never shown any signs of pain from his playing, but considering this is the dog who eats cellphones, turkeybones, slabs of fudge and anything else he can steal I don't really trust his judgement on whats best for him.
If you're not comfortable with the recall your dog can get just as much freedom with a harness and long lead, I use a 40ft lead.
Wow thats long! What is it made of? I've tried tying a long rope thats made out of plasticy stuff to his collar and letting that drag so I can step on I didn't like that. The things we used in his class for longer distance were basicly the same except they had hooks on them, and thats the only thing I've seen in stores here too. But are there plain leashes that are 40 feet or so? That might work better. I've been thinking about getting a Flexi too, the 8 meter one. I'm not sure how long that is in feet.. It wouldn't get tangled then either. But I don't perticuarly like retractable leads.. Usually his recall is pretty good, but I'm worried that he might see antoher dog or kid and get so excited that he wouldn't come. Adn I've heard people say they kick away dogs that come up to them and their dogs. :x I'm scared of what I'd do if someone kicked my Webby! :o Were doing lots of practising with his recall though so hopefully soon I'll feel comfortable enough to have him loose.

:-? Doesn't she suggest or say something about holding a dogs head underwater in the hole its dug to stop it from digging, or something like that? I've read another book that talks about "Adam's Task" and from what it said in it it seems like Hearne is a madman (or is it madwoman for a female? ), who evidently said something about "not being able to restrain herself from pushing the dog's head underwater when ever she saw a hole" (IF I remember correctly, which I'm not sure I do  ). And that she agrees or something with dangling a dog from its collar if it doesn't obey or soemthing like that. But like I said I don't really know and thats just what I read in another book. Still I think I'd rather not read her book. :)

What is better excersize? I guess an offleash walk is the best, but I don't feel comfortalbe enough yet to let Web off leash on the paths where we might meet other dogs (and people). So is it better to take a walk with him or let him run free in the woods? I want him to be tired but not over tired, and get the excersize he needs. Now I do both, sometiems let him run and othertimes let him off leash for play time. I'm also a bit worried that I'm giving him too much excersize. In a book about flatties I got at the library it gives this table for how long a walk they should have: 3 months - 10 minutes 4 months - 15 minutes 5 months - 20 minutes 6 months - 30 minutes 7 months - 40 minutes 8 months - 50 minutes 9 months - 1 hour I often am out more than 40 minutes with him, especially if all his walks/play times are combined. Somehow I loose track of time when I'm out with him... The other day I was planning on being gone for about 20 minutes and ended up being out for about 2 hours! Is it bad for him to get more excerzie than those guidelines say? Will it hurt him physically somehow? Will be get dependant on it? If I go somewhere and my mom/someone else has to look after him for a week or two I don't want him to be completely unrully if he doesn't get hours of outside time a day. One more question. There are two courses I want to take that start in March, one is like a contination of the "young-dog" course he just finished, the other is an intruductory to competitive obedience (his trainer said today that she thinks he is advanced enough and that we have such good contact that he is ready for taht! :D ) but they are on Wednesday and Thursday. Which means he wouldn't get any days rest between the two classes. Can he handle it? I don't want him to get stressed out or anything. I don't want him to feel the same about his "school" as I do about mine. Should I just take one course? Or can he do both?

If A dog Were Your Teacher--You would learn stuff like--

If people were more like dogs I think I'd like people more... We humans do need to learn those things! (well some of them) :P -
PETA's filed a complaint against Westminster KC
imported_nea replied to gooeydog's topic in Everything about dogs
   I hate PETA! :x While I don't perticuarly like docking and cropping (and I don't know nearly enough aobut it to have a strong opinion) filing complaints agians Westmister is just plain rediculous. -
She sounds terrible! :o But now I'm so curious that I'm giong to have to read one of her books  . I'll see if the library has them, I certainly don't want to waste my money on them. :-?
-
What do you think of her methods? At another board some people were discussing her books, and it seems like she thinks practically everything the dog does is being alpha. Which (if I remembe correctly) is basicly the opposite of what I read in Suzanne Clothier's book, and I thought that book made sense and was good. But the reviews on Amazon.com are good for Fennells books. What do you think of her?

I love aussies and someday I'm going to have one! :) They aren't very popular where I live so it probably won't be for years though :( Golden, those puppies are adorable!!! :iloveyou: I want one! :)

Oooh, it seems hard! :o But fun! :D Thanks for all the information. :) I wish the snow would melt here so me and Web could train outside... To little space inside. :-? I couldn't find if it said anywhere about age requirements for the dog, but I'm pretty sure I read somehwere that its 9 months here... Even if it isn't me and Web need time to practice! But when he is somewhat ok at it and I get the hang of it too, should we enter a show even though we'll make complete fools of ourselves? Web doesn't mind of course but I might... Is it worth the embarrasment to get the experience of a real show? :P Oh, and the same question about Obedience. Should we try to compete soon after he's old enough (10 months) even though I don't think he would do so well? How well is a novice obedience dog supposed to do? :)
-
Webby is 4.4 years old.. :)
-
How do you train it? What do you need to think of? I want to start competeing in junior handling when Webby gets old enough (9 months, only 2 more months to go! :o ) but I have no idea how to. I've watched my cousins show goats for years and I'm guessing that junior handling is a bit like fitting and showing is for goats. But I assume that there are differences with showing goats and dogs too. So how do you do..?

I saw this at a swedish dog board and thought it was kind of interesting to see what people answered.. So I've tried to translate it, although its going to sound wierd because I'm not good at translateing. :) 1. About how many times do you take your dog/dogs out in a day? A. 1-2 times B. 3-4 times C. 4 times or more 2. About how long are you out with your dogs in a day? A. less than 30 minuts B. between 30 and 60 minuts C. between 60 and 90 minutes D. between 90 and 120 minutes E. between 120 and 150 minutes F. between 150 and 180 minutes G. more than 180 minutes 3. What do you do to give your dog mental excersise (?? I have no idea what to call it... I guess the options explain it.) you can choose several ones. A. Train/compete in one or several sports (Agility, competetive obedience, flyball, etc.) B. Train basic obedience (Come when called, heel, sit, lie down, etc.) C. Teach tricks D. Make up games that requires the dog to use its head. E. Real work (for example herding, etc.) F. All of the above 4. What do you think of the dog "hobby" or whatever it can be called? A. Dogs are my life! B. Dogs are one of my many hobbies C. I am for one reason or another not very interested/involved with the dog hobby.

Sounds fun! :D How did you teach him to do that? :)

I've allways loved dogs, and other animals. It runs in the family, it must, because EVERYONE in my family and extened family love animals. So I've allways been exposed to love of animals, their animals, and stories aobut past animals they've had. I don't know how old I was but maybe 1-2 years or so, we were in Scottland and I saw a stuffed animal that I wanted. It was the first thing I ever had wanted. Its a small black scottish terrier and I still have it. Its name is DogDog  . The first dog I clearly remember knowing is Polly. She was my aunts Lab mix and I know there won't ever ever be a dog that comes near her level of greatness. Even Web won't. She was the quintessential dog. Then I've allways had dogs that my relatives have had around me. Bear, a samoyed, Laddie and Jamie, German Shepherd/Collie mixes, and more, but those three (and Polly) were extra special to me. The fisrt thing I can remember asking my mom was if we could get a dog. I've always wanted one. And now that dreams come true! I feel like something that was missing isn't anymore because I have my Webby boy. Here are some pictures of the dogs that have made me love dogs so much: Jamie and the kitten Monkey POLLY. Thanks Kat! :D I am very proud of him, he is such a goodnatured, smart, willing dog. He loves people so much that even when he has a bone he comes and halfway lies in my or my moms lap so he's close to us. But I found out yesterday that I have one problem with him... Little kids. He adores little kids, and has one friend who is 7 that loves him too so he thinks everyone that size does. He was offleash playing and then caught sight of a kid and started bounding up to her. And he did not listen to me! He didn't actually touch the kid but it was close and then he finally came back. :-?
A male I used to know lifted his leg so high he would wee down his other leg
 Yuck!
-
I'm both proud and sad, because my baby Webby is growing up. Just now he lifted his leg for the FIRST TIME!!! :D :o And he didn't fall over or anything. I didn't notice at first, but then I did and his leg was held high up and all. So we rushed in to tell my mom, and he looked proud. I can't believe that he isn't the tiny puppy he was when I first brought him home. The time goes so fast! When did your dogs first lift their legs? This is maybe a bit strange topic... Sorry

I'm so very very sorry. I don't know what to say, but I am really sorry.

ugh, i cant really believe this..sry pittie owners :(
imported_nea replied to Holz_Boomer's topic in Amstaffs & Pit Bulls
 Yeah right. :x There are lots of pittie owners on here. I haven't noticed any one of them act like "vicious types", not any more than owners of any other breed. I HATE categorizing, especially when it is so WRONG. -
Thats excellent. She is such an amazing dog! :)

Shes an adorable puppy! :)
