1. BOTHER ??!! Believe me Oswald is no Bother !! What a cutie !! I too, have always loved Great Danes, my favorites are the Harlequins. One day I too, will have one......... I love the name Oswald , and Ozzy will fit him perfectly !! And I AM a fan !! :ylsuper:
2. My Lab/Rott , Gretchen has the same fetish. Gretchen will dig through baskets to find socks, and if there are baskets with towels , she digs for washcloths. She has plenty of toys and chewies , she also has her JRT sisters to play with and they get lots of attention. I think every dog has some kind of quirk. It just makes them unique !! Make sure she's not eating the socks, because it can cause blockages and they can die. :o I would just put the baskets up to a height she can't get to. If I leave the house I put my baskets in my kids toy room and shut the door. Thereby removing all temptation !!!
3. That is a very good name !! Even though he saw the ad for the movie , that's a pretty neat name !!Good Choice from a 3yr. old !! There was also Captain Nemo from 2,000 Leagues Under The Sea (a classic book) I really like the name !!
4. Jen, I really have sympathy for what you are going through right now, it is hard with 3 dogs. Barney is just letting this new interloper know where she stands in the pack, and he's letting her know he is the BOSS !! They really will work things out. I have 2 Jack Russell Terriers (both female) and 1 Lab/Rott(female) and believe or not the Lab/Rott is at the bottom of the totem pole ! The youngest JRT is top dog. She is the most aggressive of the 3 and doesn't hesitate to keep them in line. :agrue: Everything will be O.K , you just have to keep after Layla, when she's getting after Joe. She probably feels the need to be dominate over him, because Barney is over her. Hope all goes well, Keep us updated on your progress !!
5. I'll have to go with the Westie/Jack Russell X. Very cute dog.....
6. I second that Shannon !! Everytime I go into a Pet Shop where they sell puppies, I get so sad for them, sleeping on those hard wire bottom cages, barely any room to move around.
7. My 3 girllzz are together all the time, dogs are pack animals. Stewie is now part of your pack and I'm sure Marygets uneasy when he isn't there. That's like my last dog Nakita , she would pace and pace until she knew everyone in the family was in the house for the night. It would drive her nuts if someone was missing.
8. My 2 Jacks favorite bed is anywhere I'm sleeping; in my bed under the covies, on the couch under my nice fuzzy blankey, on my lap if I'm sitting in a chair somewhere. Gretchen sleeps beside my bed on a nice cushy comforter, over my feet when I'm on the couch or in a chair. A.J- Where did you get that tire ??? :o Is it still in one piece ??? :D Gretchen has destroyed practically every toy I get her. The only one she has left is the spiked rhino and a spiked rubber ball with a bell inside it. I'd love to get her some more toys she can't destroy. Are you in the U.S ???
9. My all time favorite Japanese breed is the Akita, they are gorgeous !! My last dog, Nakita , was 1/2 Akita and 1/2 Rottweiler. She was the best dog, her only fault was being dog aggressive. She was my faithful companion/shadow for 15yr.
10. Mama A.J, How old is Landon ?? Gretchen is going to be 2yr. on 12-25-03. What does he weigh in at ? The last time I had Gretchie at the Vets she was 90lb. The Vet thought she was in great shape. She's going to be a big girl, they're guesstimating around 100lb.+. She's such a lovely girl, Landon sounds like he has the same sweet personality.
11. I am giving you this info from the DOG OWNERS HOME VETERINARY HANDBOOK. KENNEL COUGH The kennel cough complex is a group of highly contagious respiratory diseases in dogs. The name comes from the fact that the infection tends to spread rapidly, especially among dogs in boarding kennels. Several viruses and bacteria, alone or in combination, can cause the disease. The organisms most frequently involved are canine parainfluenza virus and the bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica. Canine adenovirus types CAV-1 and CAV-2, as well as canine herpesvirus, canine distemper and mycoplasma are other causes of kennel cough. A harsh, dry hacking cough is the characteristic sign of tracheobronchitis. The cough is unproductive and is often accompanied by gagging and retching. Except for the cough, the dog is bright and alert, has a god appetite and a normal temperature. In most cases kennel cough is a mild disease. With rest and a stress-free enviroment, most adult dogs recover completely in 7-14 days. Kennel Cough may be complicated by secondary bacterial pneumonia. This is most likely to occur in dogs with bronchitis, collapsing trachea and diseases that lower their resistance to infection. In puppies, kennel cough can be accompanied by nasal congestion. These puppies require frequent care to loosen thick secretions, improving breathing and prevent pneumonia. This is also true for toy breeds. TREATMENT Kennel Cough should be treated by a Veterinarian. Isolate dogs to prevent spreading disease. The quarters should be warm, dry and well venilated. Humidification is beneficial. A cool mist vaporizer offers some advantage over a heat vaporizer, because it is less likely to add excessive heat to the atmosphere. Moderate daily excercise is beneficial in that it assists bronchial drainage. Strenuous exertion off leash should be avoided. Antibiotics are routinely used for treating kennel cough. The drugs of choice are the tetracyclines and trimethoprim-sulfa. Continue the antibiotics for 7-10 days. Excessive coughing is controlled with cough suppressants. Dogs with severe tracheobronchitis or pneumonia are hospitalized and treated intensely with intramuscular antibiotics and drugs that dilate the breathing passages. I hope this helps some......I know it was long , but I wanted to be thorough for you and not leave anything out.
12. Personally , I don't like the look of the foo-foo dogs either..... too sissified for me. I prefer the wash and wear kind of dogs, that's why I have the JRT's and the Rott/Lab. Brush, bathe, and towel dry !! Simple as that !!
13. Dreams huh ??? Well even though I'm 42, I'm a young 42 and I still have dreams...... I live with my husband of 22yr. in July in a nice neighborhood, we have a double corner lot on a dead end street, across the street is protected wetlands, so we never have to worry about people living across the street !! (definite plus) Our house is large,3-story, 7 bedrooms. Plus we have a lovely pavillion where we cook out in the summer and we just put an inground pool in 2 yr. ago. 8) I am a stay-at-home mom (love it) and I do Daycare in my home to make extra money. I already have 4 kids , ranging in ages from 24 to 7 yr. old ( plus I have 2 grandchildren with one on the way) :o I definitely don't want anymore kids !! I currently have 3 dogs and 1 cat. It would seem like my life is pretty perfect at this point BUT...... My dream is for a house out in the country , miles away from the closest neighbor, at least 10 acres, so I can have more dogs and plenty of room for them to run...... I would have at least 2 more JRT's , Great Dane, Greater Swiss Mt. dog, and a Neapolitan Mastiff. But like the rest of you I'd definitely need to win the lottery !!!! It's always nice to dream though.......
14. Dogpaddle- , I refer to my 3 as my entourage also !! I can't go anywhere in the house without the girrllzz following me. If I do happen to go somewhere without them , my hubby tells me all they do is whine and cry and sit next to the window waiting for me to return.... they know the sound of my SUV coming down the street !! :o I'm at home all the time, so they don't like it when I leave. :(
15. BOY !! This is the kind of post that gets everybody in an uproar..... #1- I do not think that Rottweilers are the Devils Dog, and they should not outlaw producing the breed. #2- You can't say there are'nt dogs out there that aren't bred right and may have problems in the brain. But you also can't blame a whole breed for a bunch of bad ones. That's like saying all white people are bad or all black people are bad. There's always going to be bad apples in every group. #3- There is definitely a stereotype about guard type dogs being vicious, for this express reason I don't tell everyone that my Rott/Lab is part Rott, I just refer to her as a Lab mix . #4- I do daycare in my home, and my dogs are raised in an enviroment with many children around of all ages. It is part of my duty to make sure these kids in my care, learn to respect and treat the dogs nicely. It is also my duty to make sure that I never leave any child alone with my dogs. I don't think they would bite, but they are dogs and you never know what may set them off. I have 2 Jacks and Rott/Lab. As well as I don't let them manhandle my cat. He can cause damage with his teeth as well. #5- Yes all dogs can bite, but there is a difference in the size of a Terrier bite from a Rott or a Pit bite. And I think this is why it makes the news. You never see news coverage - Chihuahua bites boy, or Shih tzu mauls woman. The eyes are definitely on the Rottweilers and the Bully breeds right now and responsible owners will take heed and train and treat their dogs right. Whereas the idiots and irresponsible pet owners will continue to get into trouble with their dogs, and rightfully so. And yes in the end it is the owner not the dog. But who pays..... :(
16. Crested, Love all your pics you're doing !! Could you PLEASE do mine too ???? (just Maisy) Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou
17. Poor boy, how sad he looks..... :( Those porcupine quills are very nasty !! :x
18. :roflt: Dogs are soooo funny ,, with all their little quirks. :lilangel: My Gretchen(Lab/Rott) has a lot of funny quirks, when someone comes to the door she needs to raid something. If I have baskets of clean clothes to fold she'll steal a sock or washcloth, if the baskets aren't available she'll raid the bathroom garbage and carry around a nasty tissue. :niedowiarek: YUK. Her favorite nose spot is the privates :o , and she LOVES to lick feet, I tell everyone she has a foot fetish. Maisy my youngest JRT , she tries to get to your face, she just loves to lick your face till you can't breathe. :P Maisy loves to eat out of the bathroom garbage ( time of the month items) :o so now they get directly deposited into the kitchen garbage. Ewwww..... :drinking:
19.
the most wierd thing is they all come and sit by me at the computer, fart, then go back in the other room :o what`s that all about?
JEN !! You've just made my day !! I am cracking up !!
20. A.J OMG !! I can't believe it !! :o Your Landon looks like my Gretchen !! She is also a Lab/Rott mix and she is absolutely gorgeous. I get compliments on her all the time !! He is a fabulously handsome devil !! Gretchen will be 2yr. old Dec.25. :bday: She is jet black, she looks like a lab on steroids. Everyone loves her and is always saying they want to take her home/ or I want a dog like that. I keep telling them she's one of a kind , but obviously not because she has a twin brother named Landon !!
21. Ewww..... I've never had a problem with ticks here, and I hope I never do. I did however see a segment on Animal Precinct , where a GSH was covered with ticks ! :( Poor dog had to have a blood transfusion :o
22. Kiger, Kato is a Cat. A big orange tiger , 1yr. old and 15lb.. He was named after the Asian houseboy in the Pink Panther Movies.
