Granted it could be handled a bit differently than outright rudeness, but they are dealing with a lot while they are there. It can be hard to properly express that you would rather chat later about your dog without coming off as rude, especially if you are stressed out.
Hey guys, I personally don't like a lot of handlers attitudes, but sometimes, though not all, it isn't intentional. It is hard to politely turn down someone's attention to your dog, even in a normal pet situation. Not everybody is nice in the first place and when you add that to the eqaution you get jerks and it is unfortunate that anyone has to deal with them in any situation.(I'm sure they are awful people in regular life too.) There are people like Kiwi and Cassie and soon to be myself though that will/would be/are thrilled that you have singled our dog(s) out of many like them for attention. When I was younger, I used to help out my neighbor when she would show her Briards and Newfoundland in conformation and obedience. She instructed me to always be polite when people asked about the dogs, but that she also didn't want anyone to interact with them until AFTER they had been in the ring. I was curious as to why she would put that stipulation on so I asked her. She said that there are a lot of moralless people in the dog show world (just like in the real world) that will actually do things to harm other peoples dogs in one way or another so that THEIR dog has a better chance. If I had only encountered the bad rude people, I am sure that I would have been totally turned off of the dog show world, but because of her and other handlers like her, I'm not. I guess I am just saying, Kimberlee and others, that I am glad that you aren't put off of enjoying shows, and remember that despite the bad, there are good people there.

I LOVE how she says that any poodle mix looks the same too. I was going to point out the AKC thing, but it looks like I was beat to it.

I'm going to play devil's advocate.... Did you approach the people before or after they got out of the ring? They could have been suffering from nervousness before they went in or disappointment afterwards if they didn't win. Did your kids just run up and pet or did they ask first? Some dogs have to have hours of grooming before hand that can be easily messed up in a few brief seconds or by sticky hands. Even if your kids were perfectly well behaved, a LOT of parents have no problem letting their kids run amuck petting without asking since it's a dog show, not just some random dog on the street. Dog shows are a fairly stressful time for most of the handlers. Granted it could be handled a bit differently than outright rudeness, but they are dealing with a lot while they are there. It can be hard to properly express that you would rather chat later about your dog without coming off as rude, especially if you are stressed out. Dog handlers are in a whole different mindset at a show than they are when they are "off show", just like at any event where people/animals/etc are being judged by their performance. I have friends in bands who though they are some of the nicest people in existance are downright unbearable before they perform. Stage fright. I tend to wait until after the dogs have got out of the ring before approaching any handler ( as opposed to going up to a handler waiting at ringside for their turn in the ring) and congratulating them on thier performance and telling them that they have a great looking -fill in dog here-. Also if you are walking around and see the handlers with thier dogs in casual clothes, it generally means that they are done in the ring and are far easier to approach. If you buy one of the catalogues you can see what breeds and groups are judged when. I hope you have better luck next time around, not all handlers are evil trolls.

Some breeds or types of dogs ( big and black for instance) tend to get named stereotypically. What sort of names do your breeds get saddled with? I'll start: Dalmatians:Cinder, Spotty, Dotty, Domino, Freckles, Ashes

Awwwwwww, Indy is showing off for his new girlfriend. Perhaps she will follow his lead?

Wheeeee! I'm on a roll here. What sort of uncommon or just plain weird dog names have you used, plan to use or have seen? A friend of my dad's had a Shar Pei named Poodles, she was originaly known as "piddles" by her breeder and she didn't sell right away so she got used to Piddles. After my dad's friend got her she obviously didn't want to call her dog Piddles for the rest of her life, but wanted it to stay similar, hence Poodles. I have a couple names picked out for my future pup, one of them is Maddox( mad dux) , I haven't seen it anywhere yet. I also like Dexter, but have been seeing a lot of those lately. ( Hmmmmm do I like names with X maybe?) My Dalmatian bitch was named Phyllis after the Ophelia character. A friend of mine had a Pug named Motorhead, that went by Motor, while another had a Pittie named Evans. She was named after a bicycle brand.

Cross Posted From Dogholocaust: Here in the Houston area this hot shot trial lawyer, Jim Adler, is trolling for dog bite cases. His ad shows a rottie, a dobe, and pit bulls all in the worst possable light. "If you have been bitten by a bad dog the owner may have homeowners insurance to pay for your medical bills" then he has an 800 for people to call! 1-800-BAD-DOGS (1-800-223-3647) Blame it on the dogs...only because "1-800-BAD-OWNER" wouldn't drum up as much business www.jimadler.com/cases/dog_bites.htm www.jimadler.com What a joke of a liar, oops sorry, lawyer. From his website: Some of the more dangerous dog breeds include: Pit Bulls Rotweillers Doberman Pinchers Huskies German Shepherds Chows Hmmmmmmm there is a phone number :evilbat:

MAX Dog German Shorthaired Pointer Size: Large Age: Senior Sex: Male I.D: A1444488 Notes: LIVER White. This is what they have this dog listed as. WTF? http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=2447830&adTarget=468doggeneral&SessionID=405a88e702973409-app1&display=&preview=1&row=25&tmpl= So this has inspired me, yet again for another topic. Find a dog someplace that is listed as a breed or breeds that it clearly isn't and post them here. In addition to us having fun, some dogs might get exposure that they wouldn't otherwise by being mislabeled.

Ok I am totally ripping this off of another board, but meh, it's a good idea. What are a couple of the good traits of your breed? Conversely, what are a couple of the bad traits of your breed? Mixed breed people the same thing applies. ( such as he has the good traits of this breed and the bad ones of this or whatever is similar.) Dalmatians- Pros: Very smart, happy, possibly the most distinct breed visually ,very loyal to their family, are known to smile ( or sMarl as it's called sometimes) very outwardly affectionate. Cons: very high energy, smart enough to hold out on obeying until you find the right motivation, due to the 101 Dalmatians craze are over overbred thus producing a bunch of inferior dogs that damage the breeds reputation( nasty biters  ), those who don't know better think when the Dal is smiling that it is baring its teeth and showing aggression, sheds profusely and year round and boy are those shotrt hairs hard to get out of things. Samoyeds- Pros: Gorgeous coat, that Sammy smile, friendly, fares well in a cold nothern climate. Cons: The grooming of that gorgeous coat!, are roamers, headstrong, doesn't fare well in heat, somewhat aloof aka not a cuddler.

is usually involved in rescue at some level
I don't think it's necessary to be involved in rescue to be a good breeder. It would be nice but it doesn't have much to do with the puppies they are selling.
I put usually in italics since it isn't ALWAYS the case.
-
I would add smaller to this also. Lots of times small breeds are advertised to be extra small (teacup, peanut, etc...)
Excellent point, I'm so used to seeing stuff about the larger breeds that I totally spaced on the smaller ones. I added some more stuff to my original post as well. Does anybody else have any examples for "rare" or out of standard part? Or anything else for that matter?

and the horse's name was Friday. Never saw that one, but I love logic problems. You had us going for a minute there HF. Glad Fifty ended up in your boot camp than elsewhere. -
Many people who come here don't know what a responsible, good breeder is. I say say give them a list! Could we make this stickey? A responsible breeder: - does not perpetuate that a crossbreed is an actual breed ( Cockapoos, Labradoodles, Schnoodles etc.) - does not breed dogs of their breed to be bigger or smaller than the breed standard. ( IE does not use giant, king sized, bigger is better, teacup, peanut etc as a selling point.) - does not use color as a selling point - does not refer to any color that is not a common trait as "rare"( such as blue pit bulls, liver Dalmatians, blue Dobermans etc), especially if it is not an acceptable color for the breeds standard. ( For example: white Dobermans, Silver Labs, lemon Dalmatians, etc.) - health tests all his dogs before breeding - does not let a pet quality dog go unaltered - only breeds titled dogs that have been proven to fit the breed standard to a T and will improve the breed due to having a sound body and temperment - is usually involved in rescue at some level be it fostering, financial, timewise, etc. - thoroughly screens the homes his/her pups go to - produces few dogs - takes back the dogs of thier breeding(in explanation: If for any reason the purchaser of the dog cannot keep it due to illness, financial hardship or anything else that would cause someone to give up their dog, the breeder will take it back and rehome it themselves as opposed to the dog ending up in a shelter.) - is there throughout the dogs life to answer questions and give advice to the owner. Anyone have anything to add?

Well you must attone for forgetting the proud parents. :drinking: :drinking: -
Wow, I don't believe I didn't answer this question!!! :o To me there is no dog as striking as a well marked Dalmatian. I also think Samoyeds are gorgeous. As far as other breeds go: German Shepherds ( esp black, bi color and sable) Dobermans Rhodesian Ridgebacks Bull Terriers Pyrs Newf and a whole bunch more.

For a quick answer, yes, you can just up and create your own registry. There is a thread where we discussed registrys and the like, I'll see if I can dig it up, unless someone beats me to the punch.

Brj, there is some similar information in this thread: http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=11797. I have some other tips on file if you would like them.

You know Atom, a LOT of puppies turn up in rescue too. They just go faster. It isn't always just older dogs. I just did a search for Doberman+Ca+rescue and found several puppies. You said you didn't want to go through all the trouble of looking for other breeders because of the distance, but puppies are a lot of trouble. :-?
