I don't know about the teats but there is a people medication for scars called Mederma, it works great on people and I am sure you could ask a vet or maybe the manufacturer if it is okay for dogs. It does say it is not intended for use on open wounds but it really does work well and I think you can get it at most drugstores without a prescription. It's manufactured by Merz Skin Care Products, Greensboro, NC 27410 Here are the ingredients in case someone here more knowledgable can tell you if it is okay :) Water(purified), PEG-4, Onion (allium cepa), xanthan gum, allantoin, fragrance, methylparaben, sorbic acid. Good luck to you and it's awesome that you adopted your new girl. Feel free to post some pictures of her :)

I got The Joy of Clicking and Clicking With Your Dog, they both look very good and easy to follow.

I wish I could help but I don't know much about Australian Shepherds other than that they are beautiful and I saw three of them at the pound the other day :( I wish you lots of success though and I know there are people here who know more who will help you! What you are doing is commendable.

This is really dumb, but today the clicker training books that I ordered came! They both look awesome and I think it's something that will actually work with Dresden, if only the silly clickers would come......They need to hurry up and get here so I can start. I've always thought that there was something missing when I read dog training books, something that would make it all make sense.........And I can't wait to try it. It makes SO much sense. The possibility of having a really well trained dog is too much for me.....:) Okay, I'm done now. I'll let you all know how it goes though :)

bk already did a very good thorough job covering the Australian Cattle Dog :) Dresden is ACD/Doberman mix. One thing that I would add is that ACDs can be absolute nightmares without a huge amount exercise and a lot of constant mental work to do. I would never recommend them to anyone as anything other than a working dog unless the person has TONS and TONs and TONS of patience and determination to survive their first eight months to a year. Dresden has very very strong ACD traits and she is becoming (and is already in a lot of ways) a wonderful dog, at almost 13 months, but I really don't think most people would have survived her first eight months, the only reason I did is because I am as stubborn and determined as she is and I prayed a lot :) AND I had a lot of encouragement and help from people here on the forum :) And I'm not going to touch Dobermans because I know there are lots of more qualified people here (ahem, Nancy :) ) Lady is an American Eskimo mix, she acts in a lot of ways like a little Husky. Independant, very very smart, manipulative, sweet, trainable with the right techniques (lots of positive reinforcment), very good with kids (although less so now, as she is getting older at nine years old), runs like the wind, and loves to be as dirty as possible. She's the one in my avatar by the way. She is an awesome dog.

what a spectacular dog! she really is pretty. i don't know much about her breed........do they have a lot of advantages over German Shepherds since they are less popular and therefore not as overbred? i mean like less health problems and maybe more stable temperments and all that stuff........

Hey Nancy- Thank you SO much for this information! I've been thinking about it more and more and I am going to try clicker training with Dresden. She's been horrible to train because she is very very intelligent ( you probably already know but she's a Dobie/ACD mix, insane ) and learns everything but won't do it most of the time unless I'm standing right next to her breathing down her neck. Sometimes I'll tell her to do something I did not think she learned and she'll do it perfectly and I'll of course be stunned. I've been thinking and thinking about how there must be some effective way to train her and I just feel like there is some key that is missing, and if I could find it she would do really well and be more motivated......... I keep thinking that because of her combination of breeds that there is something different I need to be doing that I don't know about. I do have a question though, what clicker do you think is best? I saw the redi-clicker with the finger loop which sounded like the one you recommended......... Anyway, thank you so much.

CONGRATULATIONS! THAT IS GREAT!

i've ben using Mane and Tail shampoo on my dogs for the last several years and really like it. it was made for horses but you can use it on dogs just as well, i often use it for me too :) it is very gentle and thorough and you can get it at wal-mart in the pet dept, it's not too expensive and you can dilute it about 50% because it's a concentrate.........good luck :)

thanks for the help carol and rowie, i'll check out the healthy pets website and see what i can find........:)

Has anyone ordered anything from www.Petshed.com ? I'm trying to find Frontline cheaper than at my vets......Petshed has it for a lot less ( like $13 less for three months x two dogs) but I don't know how reputable they are......... Any comments? Thank you very much :)
-
thanks nancy, and everyone else, it was a passing fantasy....hopefully she'll find a good home....i learned something about doberman colors though :)
-
Did you know that Dobes come in four approved (by the standard) colors? Black, red, fawn and blue. Sounds like you may have seen a fawn or possibly a blue Dobe...... although the blues are usually pretty dark. Here's a website with photos of all the different color Dobes. http://www.dpca.org/Photos.html Nancy- thank you so much! I really appreciate it, I had known there were red, black and fawn, but I have never seen a blue or known one. Do you know what their temperments are like? I heard or read that the differnt colors of Great Danes are almost different breeds in terms of temperments........ Rowie- she looks JUST LIKE the little one in the bottom middle picture except her ears were smaller. Thanks for bringing those over:) Why would such an unusual dog be at the pound ?????????
-
I went to the pound today and there was this incredible dog.....8-10 weeks, looked just like a Doberman except it was the color of a weimeraner (soft charcoal gray) with soft red Dobie markings........and she was sooooooo sweet. I can't stop thinking about her but there is no way money or time wise I can have another dog........I just need to stop. Her eyes were this beautiful grey-blue-brown color........she's haunting me..... Courtnek- you should come here, there were so many dogs there, and a lot of them were really really sweet. There was also a bull mastiff cross there, he was awesome too...........

I agree very much with what Carol said, if you start right away it's a lot easier. Is she a Doberman? She's gorgeous!!!!!

he looks like he needs a big hug and a kiss.......he needs some tlc. very very cute dog. how big is he ? i have a customer that used to have a foxhound and was absolutely thrilled with her, always talked about how wonderful she was. GOOD LUCK! let us know what happens!
BK has several different types of barks and it seems we usually hear his attention seeking bark.  When he uses his serious bark it's when he does his nightly patrol round the yard and hears something he doesn't like. (when Rinny the GSD was alive and top dog he would do the patrolling and he didn't let BK bark at all!) He would always use his serious bark when I was alone with him and the doorbell rang. Whoever was on the other side always looked a little nervous when they heard him because he has a really terrific deep scary bark. I wouldn't mess with him if I didn't know him.
bk- do you know if most ACDs are very vocal? i keep wondering if that's why dresden is so crazy about barking all the time. i thought ACDs herded by nipping (or biting like heck if they're anything like dresden) not barking? just curious........she has a wonderful bark too :) i enjoy it when she's being watchful it's just that she does this annoying attention wanting bark that can be tremendously annoying.....
dresden has such a velvety fuzzy muzzle, it just begs to be kissed on top every so often.....lady get hers on the head.

don't give up courtnek, you'll find the right one, keep looking. good luck to you and please keep us updated :)

when i take lady to the vet all she can think to do is try to escape, she pushed the door open twice when we were walking by it and when we got in the room she sat in the corner by the door and was alternating between shaking so badly her teeth were almost rattling or staring at the door knob. she has never ever liked the vet but one time this really obnoxious tech was really rough with her trimming her nails ( i should have just done it myself, i've always felt bad about asking them and her getting all scared) and ever since she's hated the place, she likes the vet lady she just hates to be there. i am expecting some trouble out of dresden when i take her just because she's' very vocal and can be growly and mouthy anyway. even when i move her a little bit often she'll growl at me. so of course i tell her no very firmly and move her as many times as it takes till she stops...... maybe you should try a different vet? was this a woman vet?
good idea Marble but we don`t have crates :D
well then maybe you can put her in a room and close the door and then line up all the other dogs food bowls right next to the other side of the door so she can hear them all chewing :):):)

BK and Malamum re. spastic dogs (and anyone else too:)
Marble replied to Marble's topic in Everything about dogs
If it gets too much he just runs away or puts Tomson's head in his mouth and *breathes* on him! If he wanted to he could crush Tomson's skull and it would be like eating dinner for him, but he's just not aggressive at all.
wow bk, he must have some powerful breath :) :) is it his breath or the body language ??? ha ha ha. lady's breath is horrible, maybe that's why she still imtimdates dresden so badly when she gets going sometimes :) lady's so funny, she'll put up with dresden for a while but man, if dresden gets too pushy she'll tell her off really fast. the other day she had dresden (over fifty pounds and very tall) on her back and lady was standing over her doing her scary growl with her mouth over dresdens muzzle ( lady's only 29 pounds and built pretty petitely) , it was hilarious, dresden just sat there......
