she sounds like a sweetheart. i have only ever owned female dogs so i'm not the one to ask. lady has always been the attentive comforter type, very sensitive to moods and what people are feeling. dresden on the other hand......maybe she'll be nicer when she grows up. freebee is a lab mix though right ? so many labs are so nice...........we have had four labs...all nice.

well i got dresden spayed through the spay neuter clinic that the pound works with. they said to keep her from running, jumping, playing etc for TEN days (yeah right, worked for three) and to make sure she did not mess with the stiches- which she didn't. hope it goes well, she'll be fine.

i'm so sorry to hear about your loss.
-
thanks courtnek- i keep hearing all these stories recently about women being abducted and stuff. made me start thinking about dresden and if she would be any help. i appreciate the info.

yeah, we have regular wood flooring too. it's borderline, not the most immune thing to scratches i'd say. but i have to admit dresden (ten month old crazy mutt) runs too fast all the time and yesterday i was in the kitchen and she came flying around the corner so fast all her legs went out from underneath her.........i tried really hard not to laugh........unsucessfully.

bitter apple works for dresden for about three seconds, she sees the bottle and runs and hides while i spray it but after a minute or two she's already smelling whatever it was she was messing with. i've heard it works for some dogs....

okay, we'll all get off your case now :D :D i know how you feel though, there's just something about them mutt's.....

hey courtnek- yeah, very glad you're safe, there are so many freaks out there. unfortunately most of my "freak" scary encounters have been while driving alone with no dogs. i also wanted to tell you i think you handled it very well, very good thinking. does anyone know if a dog as it grows older becomes more protective? i read somewhere something about how their protective instincts tend to become much stronger after like a year or a year and a half or something. anyone know if this is true? i'm just wondering because dresden is so stinking friendly with everyone. i can't tell if it's just people who i'm fine with or if she's just not protective. she is a dobie/australian cattle dog mix so wouldn't you think she'd be fairly protective?

what a georgeous dog. how long did it take for him (?) to get used to being on it ? he's really pretty.......
-
NEVER!!! just kidding, but actually i was not able to trust lady on her own till she was like six. not to be discouraging but she used to be extremely hyper and got bored really fast. she's eight or nine now and we can trust her completely :)
-
just my three cents :) i have had, let's see, three labs and every single one of them shed like crazy, it was unbelievable. not to be mean or anything but i think that most people who breed should not be and the few that do it right should be the only ones allowed to breed. there are a heck of a lot of dogs, mutts and purebreds, puppies and adults out there who need homes and make incredible pets, i am fortunate to have adopted two georeous interesting mutts.........not to get on a rant. i'll get off my soapbox now

no random facts about dogs but did you know turkey vultures are able to vomit fifteen feet ? apparently they do this in defense of their young :) good thing dogs can't do that.........

yeah, i grew up with seven brother's so they toughened me up on the insect/snake etc front. i've always liked both. actually i'm an artist (and landscaper too) and my favorite thing to paint or draw is insects. right now it's a praying mantis someone found dead and gave to me.......

[It's caused by the little hairs and powders on their wings, and when humans come into contact with them, they can get an ugly rash. Itchy, but sore, at times bubbly, like poison ivy. They're not as rare as people think either. I think that with the amount your dog's eating, he'll be fine, but I would watch out. Although moths are the main diet of frogs... Maybe they know which ones are poisonous and which ones are safe :-? ... Maybe animals are naturally immuned to their poison :-? ...
wow :) that's interesting to know. have you ever gotten stung by a puss catapiller ? i almost had to go to the emergency room, short of breath, heart beating too fast, wierd aches and pains, rashes, asthma like symptoms etc. defintely the worst allergic reaction i've ever had to anything in my life. saddleback catapillars are really bad too........
-
does anyone know if moths have negative health effects on dogs ? i know you're laughing, i am too, but yesterday and today it's been really warm and there have been moths all over our windows and dresden is freaking out like crazy because she wants to catch all of them. last night i finally closed all the curtains because even after being corrected several times she kept jumping on the windows. i took her outside so she could catch one (thinking it would get it out of her system, yeah right) and immediately felt terrible for letting her kill a little moth and eat it. then she came indoors and snatched one off the wall. so at least i know why she has that long tongue now, she's a rare breed called a mothsnatcher, they were bred by the royalty in uh, india to roam in their palaces to keep the moth population at bay, so the moths would not be able to eat their silk. she also loves candied ginger, she'll sit and wait so long while you're eating it that she'll have drool coming out of the corners of her mouth. what are the wierdest things your dogs eat ? do you think moths can be bad for dogs ? i'm just curious........ :D

i know this is probably crazy but when dresden had her rear dewclaws removed she would not leave her bandages alone and kept pulling them off. i finally ended up wrapping a gauze pad on, then the atheletic tape and then finally, on top of the athletic tape (so it would not stick to her fur) i taped an inch wide stip of duck tape(duct ? the hard core grey stuff.......). this worked really well. good luck with him, hope he heals fast :)

well, i'd say he was a........beautiful dog with a georgeous face. i am not the one to say what he is, there are tons of people on here who know a whole lot more than i do, but there is something in his face and coloring, esp his being so red and having that dark eyeliner, that makes him look sort of boxerish to me. what kind of build does he have ? what is his personality like ? any distinctive traits ? how old is he how much does he weigh ? i'm not trying to bombard you with questions but i know aswers would help the others help you figure out what he is...........:)
-
um, what are they and how exactly do they work ? they look kind of cool..

i've been trying to get dresden to "go lie down" too, she hovers like a vulture anytime anyone is eating. i think (since she has not yet had enough exposure to water to get used to it ) that i'll get a little spray bottle and whenever she comes in the kitchen or i need her to go lie down i'll tell her to do so and show her what to do and then if she is persistant i'll pull out the spray bottle and squirt her while telling her to go lie down. hopefully it'll work.

sounds like my brother's red dobie, if even a car pulls in the driveway while she's here visiting she pees all over the floor, she usually manages to spread it all over a whole room.
How funny!!   Wonder if I could rent Jac out to do "Lab work"!
if i did that with dresden she'd try to eat it......very funny joke

yeah, what hobbit said. i was feeding dresden eukanba puppy food and all she did was grow way too fast (at least is seemed like it), act like the psycho dog from hell, and had an unhealthy coat. i switched to diamond adult lamb and rice and she is behaving a thousand times better, has a very very shiny healthy coat, and is growing more evenly (not sure how much dog food influences this, could just be her age but it happened a week or so after i switched foods). i would very highly recommend it to anyone.

hey nancy b- is whitney the dog in your photo ? she is absolutely georgeous. i was out working the other day and a lady was walking her 104 pound male dobie, magnificent dog, i asked her if i could pet him and she said yes, i petted him and chatted with her about dogs and whatnot and as i was about to get back to work she started telling me how thankful she was that i was not scared of her dog (she actually thanked me for being friendly with him) and how so many people cross the other side of the street and pick up their children and all that. it was very interesting, he was a really nice dog. i did notice that he was supervising her daughter the whole time i was petting him and i liked him that much more for it, i would not have messed with her for anything. my brother has a female red dobie and she is kind of wacko, pretty dog but very jumpy and just generally a bit high strung, he gets the same reaction though with his dog.........maybe part of it is from the hollywood stereotype of vicious dobies ?
Hazel, I take BK for a walk with a plain old collar and lead and people cross the road to avoid him (I know that's why they do because they cross back as soon as we've passed them). hey bk- are people really scared of him? i've had some similar reactions to dresden. must be because they are both so unusual looking. i am probably going to get a nice leather collar wtih the blunt spikes on it in a year or so when she's done growing, i did get her hoping she'd get big and protective and all that, the collar might enhance that impression........or make her look even funnier. she was really sweet today, kept coming up and leaning on me to get petted.

umm, no thanks dog paddle, interesting idea but i think i'd rather treat her like a uh, dog and try to act like a human myself......:)
