1. Kavik my Border Collie took small naps, spread throughout the day. Hang in there if your pup is bit shy all the changes may be to much for him. I would get a schedule down for him (and for our convenience) and stick to that and not take him anywhere strange, just neighbourhood walks for at least a week. Let him get used to your family, your home and his new life and schedule and then add other stimulae to properly socialize him. Good luck.
2. Animal Cops MHS euthanizes all seized PB type dogs. Animal Precinct will go to great lengths to rehab and place PB type dogs even those with possible fighting backgrounds. The difference may be that Animal Cops is out of Detroit where there is approximately, at least, 1 PB type dog for every other person in Detroit, according to one stat I saw last year on Animal Planet. Additionaly Detroit has a huge problem with dog fighting. The MHS is simply not able to manage the volume of dogs with special needs that these conditions present them with. PB type dog owners, breeders and vendors in Detroit need to be extra careful because of this. It is a sad situation but there are no easy solutions. All good PB type dog owners and breeders in the Detroit area will need to become very active in their communities promoting proper ownership, good breeding and selective vending ect. or this problem is not likely to be solved. Having viewed Animal Cops I don't think that most of the PB type dogs give the breed a bad name. In fact most dogs pictured are portrayed as victims, they often seem sweet but beat up, abused and tired. Often the officers indicate that they would really prefer not to be having to seize the dogs as they will only be euthanized. I think that the villanized party is actually the bad owners and that is as it should be.
3. Yesterday Zaphod, my covert ops garbage raider and food filcher, managed to nab and instantly swallow . . . a nectarine pit. So I was wondering how he was going to pass that . . . ouch. And I've been keeping an eye on things. Fortunately he answered by hurling it up on my tile floor today. So just in case any of you have a dog like mine, now you'll know . . . nectarine pits come out the front end. *sigh*
4. Does anyone know Bodybreak? The have little public information clips that run all the time here with two noted and recognizable Health culture figures here. The usually have really excellent health, diet, recipe, exceicise and lifestyle advice and their clips are like public service ads. Yesterday they had one I had not seen. It indicated pet diet and health were important too but they only indicated that healthy pet food has a balance of carbs/protien/fat and that the percentages should be listed on the bag. ALL PET FOODS HAVE THAT HERE AND THE PERCENTAGES ARE OFTEN MISLEADING DUE TO INDIGESTABLE/UNUSABLE PROTEINS! Not only that they pictured Beneful by Purina in the clip and have an ad for it on their site. In my opinion Beneful is on the same calibre as Michelenas or KD with a pit of peas and carrots thrown in. It has corn - as the first ingredient, by-products, salt, suger . . . I think I posted the ingredients here before, I'll try to get them again. I was so frustrated. They are so accepted here that people are just going to believe them without proper research. I emailed them but have not got a response yet. Will keep you posted.
5. I confess to using a prong collar for leash training. The Zen method soooo did not work - I don't know maybe I suck at it. Loopi didn't work. I'm not comfortable/proficient with choke chains. Martingale didn't work. Zaphod hated his halti/gl so much he actually caused himself injury trying to get it off. Of all the training devices I've tried the dogs seem to prefer the loopi - which didn't actually help and the prong and I have good results with it. I used to use it on all walks and was able to start alternating with flat buckle and gradually use the flat buckle more and more. Unfortunately if people see a dog in a prong they think either: I'm an evil person or My dog is evil
6. Can this occur from a plastic bowl type problem?
7. Junior772 - So what do you think of the suggestions so far? How much excercise can you give the dog you'll get? Do you have any sort of activities you'd prefer to do with your prospective pooch? I'm just guessing that you might not be interested in tons of grooming? I like the idea of a retired greyhound, whippets and italian greyhounds would be good as well but if he's looking for a "guy dog" the IT might be a bit on the delicate looking side. Border Terrier is a very "guy" little dog but require a fair bit of mental and physical excersize. I have no experience with Bostons but they are pretty "guy" looking for a little dog. Depending on appartement size you could probably get a bigger dog as well. Some bigger dogs are way more sedate and content to lounge on the couch then energetic little dogs. One survey I saw indicated that one of the best apartment dogs for a working person was . . . a bermese mountain dog. Not sure how true that is but it was interesting. We could list dogs we thought were definately out for appartments? I would suggest not getting: Weimerainer (sp?) Beagle Hounds in general Most herding breeds would be out as well except in special circumstances.
8. Seems good to me. Nice size for your dog. Just an aside: I never left food in the crate with my boys and rarely left water - didn't want them to eat/drink it all out of boredom early in their stay and be left crossing their legs. If I was going to be gone over 4 hours I'd leave a bit of water in a crate bowl (mounts on side of crate so can't be tipped.)
9. That was educational. Thanks.
10. Sounds good to me. I know there are lots of dog owners out there who would love to have someone train their dog for them and then teach them the commands, might work. There is a trainer here who will take your dog for two weeks and return it to you more or less trained but there is an additional 1 1/2 session in your home to teach you to use the commands.
11. Well I'm no expert with this breed or specific problem, I'm sure someone else might be able to help more, but, her behaviours sound "normal" given her experiences and its good she will recognizes that if you let someone in the front door that that is cool. It sounds like the other issue can be worked out. The behavourist is an excellent choice! Good for you and good luck.
12. I don't think it would work for dog like Kavik he is too . . . (specific?) I have difficulty conveying commands once he's learned them sometimes because the tone of voice and body language MUST be EXACT. Its like "speak" in one pitch is not even the same word as "speak" in a different pitch, same with hand signes but to a lesser extent. Now if Remington is more my mum's Holly you might have some success. She is excellent with commands, even the first day my mum brought her home. She will do anything for anyone and isn't picky. She automatically does the circle behind thing ("heal up") although we don't know the command to get her to do it when we want, she just does it to be leashed or if she is in the "wrong" position on leash. She will sit, stay, down, sit pretty, shake, out etc. Now if we could only find out what training and commands she's had had - I'm sure there is tons.
13. Guess that's why Kavik swam better when he fell out of the canoe - he was swimming to shore. Kendalyn - The earliest I'm going to be getting out, except for day trips, will likely be mid June. It is essential for my sanity.
14. I like the Scot variety better myself.
15. . . . He CAN'T Barely keeps his head above water, makes almost no progress. He fell out of the canoe once last year and seemed to do better making it to shore but still no great shakes. Oh well, I just put foam in his pack next time.
16. Well given the weekness of that retort I will just consider that a victory for us, shall we celebrate with a bit of :tort: or shall we break out the :drink_2: as it appears from Rapids
bye bye
that she/he may actually be leaving us in peace.
17. *hmmf* I think the real reson is much more likely that she doesn't have dogs at all but that is just a personal assumption.
18. Thanks Lucky and DL. HF -
19. I can't resist either . . . bad DP. The latest GSD pic reminded me of another issue I have with Rabid's GSD knowledge - ITS A PUPPY! It will grow into its lovely, comical, radar ears which are cute now for those reasons and when it grows into them it will look alert and regal. :P Marion - That is a really disturbing picture. Izzy - Thanks
20. Rabid there are a number of reasons people think your a troll, and they are good reasons. The cheif one that occurs to me is that you say inflamatory things that you really don't know anything about. For example: Your reference to all GSDs having sloped back ends and the same colour markings indicates you don't know jack about GSDs. GSDs of Czech and German lines tend to be a more square dog (not near as sloped in the back end.) Additionally although the tan with black saddle type colouration is more common GSDs come in a variety of colourings and markings. Solid black, sable, liver, blue and tan, black and silver, tan has varieties of tan, cream, red, silver. There is full sadle, part sadle, brindle (rare), and others. See: www.4gsd.net/colours.html Please do not make blanket statements without knowing what you are talking about.
21. As for Rabid's question. If this is actually a question not a nettle you may want to try wording things more politely. And yes the majority of lab owneres can fairly easily tell their dogs from other dogs. Even if it was hard I'm sure it wouldn't matter to them as it would have no real impact on their lives if they were good owners. And no not everyone wants to know, you want to know maybe but not everyone even ever considered this. And there are tons of folks here (Hmmm, HF, Courtnek, myself and plenty of others who I may have forgot, sorry.) who aren't afraid to say things that may upset other members due to content or point of view), we just try to do so politely and civilly. Don't just make blanket statements out of hand without knowing what you are talking about please.
22. Special dogs are the best! So long as they are smart enough to do that perplexed headcock or the vacant happy I sorta wish I knew what you were going on about look. Zaphod does it regularly. I love it soooo much.
23. So is the dog in the picture above an American Bulldog? The pics of American Bulldogs I've seen seem to be heavier dogs. Good looking dog, I like it whatever it is.
24. Folks the number of views on this thread is soon going to rival the Feed a Shelter Animal for Free thread. There are a lot of sidetracks on this thread and must be lots of Guests coming in to view the spectacle. While I agree that this is an important issue on the board perhaps its time to let the mods do what their going to do and go back to normal. Oh and click for the pups in the Feed a Shelter Animal for Free thread, please.
25. :hand: Thanks. I am back from one of my little Dogo Sabatical. I seem to be lax posting in the winter :niewiem: Science_Doc - It is amazing what you miss when your away isn't it? BTW Dogo seems busier than when I was here last, I can't keep up with all the new posts. I need to schedule MORE Dogo time apparently. Good for Dogo though - variety, plenty of people to go to for info etc.
