I don't see border collie myself, maybe border terrier? Certainly some other things but who knows. Try again in another 4 months?
2. I think that they might have been a much better solution to this problem had it been addressed when the dog became incontinent because switching an indoor dog to a dog on a chain in its old age is cruel but now that you are in this position there is something you aught to consider first. What is legal where you are? I know here if you killed your dog in many of the ways suggested you could certainly be charged of course you could also be charged for not treating or euthanizing the animal properly in the condition you have described.
3. This demo liberal regime thing reminds me of something that makes me laugh: When I was much younger I was watching tv and there was some kids show with kids of different nationalities saying "hello (in their native language), my name is . . . ., I'm from . . . ." with a picture of the shape of their country in the background. So when they got to the Japanese kid, he said "(appropriate japanese greating), my name is . . . . , I'm from Nipon." And the kid from Germany says " . . . I'm from Deutschland (I think that was it.) etc. So here I am thinking gee kids in other countries are stupid - they don't even know the names of their own countries. My dad later explained it to me and I felt rather stupid myself but oh well - live and learn.
4. I did see one that was at least 4 1/2 feet tall and 4 feet wide and 6 feet long - more like an indoor dog run. Maybe it was for multiple dogs, it come with its own sectioning off panel - it was very spiffy but it was $339. My large one was only $90 and it would fit two grown medium-large size dogs. The massive one I have only seen once and I had to do some looking to find my large one but they are out there if you need them.
5. Guida aside I find this threads original topic interesting, I like seeing differring methods. SRC wrote:
I just take everything up off the bathroom floor, put the toilet paper in teh cabinet (I removed the holder), and close the linen closet door. I don't have anything sitting on the counters..so he can't get into anything...I even had glass doors installed so there was no shower curtain. The bathroom isn't large though..it's my guest bathroom. So it's not "much" larger then a crate(this is in relation to his size mind you and the florr plan of the room)...but large enough he can move around a bit.
I can understand having a problem crating larger dogs - it must be difficult finding a large enough crate. I crate trained all mine but did use a larger crate than is usually suggested - I was quite prepared to section it off if it became nec. but it never was. I liked having them have a bit of extra room. My brother once thought he'd give Kavik more room and shut him in the bathroom while he went out. He put things up etc. but it didn't work. Kavik must have worked at the door the entire time he was out - I came home to find him quite distressed. I think it was because he wasn't in his place/den/crate and because his crate was a wire crate on the main floor where he could see everything. Every dog is different.
6.
The food will not be the big obstacle for us, it is the bones. Anything really good that he feels is worth protecting.
I think this is fairly common. Kavik was like this for a while. Treats and special things tend to be what dogs fight over, when they get enough regular food there is little point fighting over it. Most people won't bring toys to the offlead park near me for this reason. Excellent to hear you have things well in hand. Do you have any idea what behaviourist your going to? There is some Wade guy in London who will do one on one's at a location of your choosing - like your home. We had him in when Kavik was giving us a real go and it helped a fair bit - simple stuff really but it helped. You might want someone with more specific expertise if you can find them but if not I would definately give him a ring and at least see if he is too your liking. If your interested I'll look up the number.
7. I agree completely. I have read a bit about Malinois and know someone who does Schutzhund (with his Czech lines GSD) with I guy who breeds Malinois. They seem like a breed who require the most attention to them in terms of opportunity for physical and mental excercise. They also have a wonderful reputation for obedience - if you ensure they get the excercise they need and keep yourself alpha to them. I have heard of Malinois doing SAR and policework as well as agility, tracking and obedience. I have even heard of one Malinois that does SAR and therapy work but I think that it must be an exceptional dog and a devoted handler.
8. Welcome to Dogo JDM I understand that Belgians tend to have a fairly dominant nature and are very high energy. I think I would manage but it probably won't come up anytime soon - it will likely be at least 5 years before I add to my doggy family - 2 is enough with my tiny backyard. A freind of mine's parents got a Belgian Malinois, they had experience with dog training/police dogs/GSDs but I don't think they had any experience with keeping a dog like this as a house pet. They claim the dog "went crazy." It broke the crate and tore up the house and ate chair cusion. So what do they do . . . the next time they go out they but the crate up against the couch . . . the dog ate its way out. Needless to say they need a new couch. They took the dog to the pound. I think the problem was likely that they were crating it too much (in a crate that was obviously not sturdy enough) and not excercising its mind and body enough - and why on earth they thought the couch would stop it I'll never know - you'd think with their alleged background they'd know better.

Do you have a list of the specific ingredients? All I found was this: Ingredients: Grain, meat and animal by-products, vegetable by-products, oil and fats, vegetables, yeasts, minerals, seeds This list would be worrisome to me. It starts with grains and should start with protiens, it contains plenty of by-product, none of the ingredients are identified ie "grain" instead of "rice", "meat" instead of "beef". If there are no more specific ingredients available I wouldn't touch the stuff. I also found this: Ingredients: Grain, vegetable by-products, meat and animal by-products, oils and fats, yeasts, minerals, seeds Same thing only protien is even further down on the list - not promising at all. If you can find it, it would be good to know the recommended feeding portions too.
10. I agree. Go back to desensitizing they way you were and add NILIF. If you get to the point where you can take food and treats away but never seem to be able to take the bones - never give bones. For around 3 months neither Kavik nor Zaphod got treats, except when I was training them, because Kavik thought they were all his. A fair portion of our training was teaching Kavik this was not so.
11. I struggled for years to get Mroo to put on weight. She was often around 5lbs and would whine if picked up - not enough padding. She just hated to eat and often threwup. Eventually I tried Solid Golds cat food and she threwup less and picked up some weight, better coat and happier. When I put the boys on Canidae I tried Felidae for the girls - score. No throwing up, up to 6 1/2 lbs, gorgous coat and a much happier kitty. Oh the litter box is a touch better too. Felidae (and Canidae) are excellent foods and when you look at how little you need to feed, they are an excellent price as well.
12. You could go with an olive barrel. They come in many sizes some of them very large, I have seen one that was likely over 50L. They are plastic and air tight and have a lid you can either clamp on (clamp comes with it) or just put on and take off. Canoeists get harnesses for them so they can take them tripping, keeps food smells from attracting animals and is watertight. Here is one with the harness already on it: http://www.myccr.com/SectionGear/ReviewPics/HeadstrongHarness_LG.jpg
13. Halo - If you were close enough I would definately sell you my two enddoor kennel - it's sitting in my basement doing nothing. It is two small to leave either of my boys in anymore. Generally I am a big fan of sectioning of a larger crate and just letting a puppy grow into the crate but when we got Zaphod we also had Kavik and were fostering Tyr. I have a monsterouse crate that Kavik and Tyr shared but I was not keen on putting Zaphod, a wee 8 week old pup, in there with two other dogs. You could also consider a doggy seatbelt and desentsitization training. Kavik gets overexcited in the car and runs from left to right and whines with anticipation, he is expecting to go the park all the time. I've been meaning to do a bit of desensitizing with him because after a while he really starts to distress Zaphod (who is not the best of riders, can get carsick.)
14. There are wire crates that have doors on both ends, I have one in my basement right now. I picked mine up at an independent pet store and have no idea on the name though. Mine has a door on each end. I was able to find these online: 2 door side and back http://www.sitstay.com/store/equip/cratepp5.shtml 3 door http://www.countrysidevetsupply.com/level.itml/icOid/246 I guess the door on both ends is not very common, probably because they are not as stable, at least from my experience.
15. Hope Meg is well soon. My vet also suggested no ibuprofen or acetaminaphin (sp?) products for my dog. He suggested only uncoated A.S.A (aspirin) ant not much of that either, for a 75 lb dog he was suggesting a max of three regular strength a day. You could look into Yucca if your interested in herbal options.
16. Thanks RnP
17. The other day we had company and they had brought of a Caramilk Egg - and left it on the floor! Zaphod (aka EatDog) ate it - fortunately it was not enough chocolate to give a dog of his size problems but he was quite hyper for a while - probably strictly from the suger. I don't know how many times I have had to ask people not to leave food unattended below waist height. I know Zaphod should be completely trustworthy but we have a real problem with it. He is improving slowly but when he succeeds in stealing tasty food it is a self rewarding behaviour - untraining. I swear I'm going to post house rules.
18. Sorry to sidetrack a bit here but - Some dog aggression or tendency towards dog aggression is an accepted part of the breed standerds for apbts etc. Are there other breeds where this is the case?
19. I personally would like to see and end of cropping, and any docking that is strictly aesthetic (I understand some dogs injure their tails and some hunter's claim that docking helps for feild work - I personally have no experience here so I will go with those who know.) Now as for bringing a complaint against Westminster KC - I think that's just dumb. First of all if you want to convince people to make a change you don't do it by filing a complaint against them, you do it by discussion and offering info - between two peer groups who are both concerned about the issue. Second PETA should really be starting with the gross abuses of animals, changing laws to make penalties stronger etc.

21. Excellent suggestion! Crates are expensive if you are watching your pennies.
22. They emailed me back and have removed the paragraph until they can modify it! :D
23. I found many client endorsements on their site but no contact except the one to buy an add on their site - strange don't you think. Wonder how they got those endorsements? Anyway I emailed them at their add buying address, hopefully I'll get somewhere. I made a suggestion on a possible change: "Be Honest If the landlord says NO then look somewhere else. Pet owners may need to allow more time for a succesful search. Don't try to sneak a pet in. Chances are you'll get caught. And even if you don't get caught, the stress of hiding a pet can undo all the great benefits of having one in the first place. "
24. I had good success with just yogurt but every dog is different. I also found it very helpful to keep the yard very clean - no opportunity for mistakes. Now I only have to clean the yard once a day.
25. I found the following on this site! http://relocatecanada.com/apartmentpet.html
Be Honest If the landlord says no, but you just HAVE to have the apartment, be prepared to leave your pet elsewhere. Don't try to sneak a pet in. Chances are you'll get caught. And even if you don't get caught, the stress of hiding a pet can undo all the great benefits of having one in the first place.
Hey I have an idea, how about if they say no you look for another place and not dump your dog! I couldn't find a place to reply to them at, oh if I could I would be giving them an earful.
