1. Glad you were able to get something done for PJ, good for you.
2. Mine definately can and I have given up fighting the snark marks. I used to do the patio window 2-3x a week but it was a loosing battle.
3. Thanks for the tips on the nails. I'll try trimming the tips and THEN going for our pavement time and see how that works.
4. Well if you have tried the whole lot including sitting right next to the crate and treating the pup for going in there etc. Maybe she is just one of those dogs who doesn't do well with crating. Maybe you might do better with an x-pen. It could be seperation anxiety though and it wouldn't matter wether she was crated, xpenned or loose in the house. Have you seen the training sticky?
5. Hoping for some more info here. All of Zaphod's nails are black so I trim by guess and very conservatively. I can easily keep Kavik's short and neat by walking him on the sidewalk or parking lot briskly but Zaphod's seem to be harder. Is there any general rule on how short/long to trim nails? He is so good about having his nails trimmed now that I don't want to ruin it.
6. BlackGSD wrote: Nancy B wrote: Also....three cups of food a day is a LOT of food! . Depends on the DOG. (And the food.) True. My BC who is 40lbs eats as much as I feed my Lab who is 60lbs, they are on Canidae and eat around 2 cups a day each.
7. No one is angry I think - just opinionated. You asked we gave you our opinion. I think its wonderful you check Petfinder and that you are researching before you get a dog.
8. It sounds like Jessie might actually be the one who is afraid, the puppy is probably unfamiliar to her. Just because she is the one afraid doesn't mean she won't bite - fear biting. I would suggest starting just like introducing a new dog in your own family. Start on fairly neutral territory and crate the puppy or get it in a smaller area, let them get to know each other slowly, safely with the barrier between them. Let them approach the barrier on their own terms, don't force them. Once they are more comfortable move on to letting them interact with both on leads and move on from there. Do not leave them unnattended together even if things seem to be going well.
9. Well first off I would switch to a food lower in carbs, really high carbs can bulk up some dogs and not with muscle, just make sure it isn't a really fatty food. I know most of the brands I prefer don't have light versions. There is Healthwise Weight Control, it is associated with Innova/Nutra http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=product-detail&pxsl=%2F%2Fproduct%5B@id%3D%27548%27%5D Anyone know anything further about this product. Also have you considered that your dog might have health problems causing it to be overweight, it doesn't sound like you overfeed and it does sound like you get some decent excercise with her. Maybe check on diabetes, thyroid and whatever else your vet thinks of. Golden's are generally 55-75lbs when not oversized, so your girl could stand to loose some weight but I wouldn't call her obese, just overweight. Good for you for addressing the issue and not just letting it continue on.
10. Some guy who visits me keeps saying my dogs are too thin. Kavik is a little lean but he is 20 inches and 40 lbs - which is within breed standereds. Zaphod is a lab cross and I am pleased that he still has a tuck at his tummy and a visable waist. My neighbours hasselled me over their weight as well. At least my vet knows better. Both my dogs a very athletic and healthy so I guess I'll just have to deal with the unknowlegables derision.
11. They are indeed beutiful. BTW I love the collage in your signature.
12. HF, you are a kind and good person.
13. SRC try contacting some of these folks see if they can help: http://alabamaanimalrescue.com/ http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/AL11.html http://www.arkinc.org/ http://www.i-love-dogs.com/dog/adoptme/index.html
14. Does Roxie have a crate, if so, encourage her to sleep there and teach your son that that is Roxie's special place where she cannot be disturbed, kindof like his own bed. You could also make him his own special quiet place if he is the sort of kid that this sortof comparison would help.
15. To Regulars: This oripei thing keeps cropping up, either this is the next doodle craze or the same someone keeps bringing it up. To Cleo: I understand your interest in a dog similar to your beloved pet but you may find that people here are against "designer breeds." There are thousands of dogs euthanized in shelters every day. There are plenty of purebreds with tons of diversity. If you really are interested in a paticular cross, keep an eye on your shelters and Petfinder and try getting one there. If you really liked the Shar-pei breed than go with that again, get one from a reputable breeder, visit their residence, ensure its not a puppymill and that all health checks have been done. "Designer breeds" have a slightly greater tendency to be milled breeds, also breeders of these dogs rarely do health checks, further they ensure that more mutts die in shelters. While I understand why people breed purebreds (to preserve and improve the breed and compete in events restricted to) purebreds I think that there are probably to many people breeding them as well, but I don't even get why people breed mutts when there are plenty in shelters.
16. I believe he will come out he will just charge more, he is a bit pricey by the way but he is a natural with dogs and knows his stuff.
17. You could be right Hillside, after all who would buy Ol'Roy?
18. Do you and the new neighbours have a fenced yard? As for barking, I would think they might be some during the day but likely quiet at night. In my experience most of my neighbours dogs make no more noise than my neighbours kids - which is not at all to say the make none  In fact I have one set of neighbours who seem to delight in having their children play right outside my open window early morning on weekends. I would talk to them, mention your daugters fears, they will likely show caution around her. Once she is used to the idea of this large dog living near her maybe move on from there if the neighbours and the dog seem amenable.
19. It was Ol'Roy - better for trolls than for dogs anyway.
20. Laugh away K, but weren't you lamenting the lack of something just a little while ago?? Careful what you ask for K, there have been a number of hotly debated threads lately and a number of posts that could be considered to be coming from under the bridge.
21. I do agree that this situation is deplorable. I do value the opinions of Michelle and Hillside, I think that people have a responsibility to speak up when they see something wrong being done, staying silent is complicity. They have voiced those concerns and objections and that is good and has been done. Right now I would just like to see the best possible thing (that we can get SRC and her aunt to do) done for this dog as fast as possible. So the rental car thing has been suggested, fine. See how fast you can get that poor creature cared for SRC, it sounds like your aunt might balk a bit but be firm, it is the right thing to do.
22.
If they could have flown in a psychic from NY don't you think they could have flown in a Bloodhound from somewhere? That's MY question...
True. I also wonder why they didn't use a helicopter with heat scan, I mean if you are going to fly something in that is. Unless they were pretty sure they were looking for a cadaver, of course there are also cadaver sniffing dogs.
23. In many areas, paticularly moderately to highly populated areas, access to SAR personal is extremely limited and access to SAR dogs even more so. It is hard to even get proper SAR training for your dog around here. Still I would have wanted a dog, even a poorly trained SAR dog. Isn't tracking part of advanced Schutzhund? That would do.
24. A quick trip to the vets would definately be a good idea. Clean those rugs or any spots where accidents have occurred with a good enzym cleaner (your dog can smell what you can't and will be drawn to it.) Also check out this thread: http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=10960
25. Ummm, for those of you who work at groomers or vet clinics, so I know how you feel about nervouse poopers - what about barkers. Everytime I take Zaphod to the vet he barks 80% of the time were there, he gets himself so worked up his hackles go up, he pulls on the lead to see other dogs . . . its so embarrassing! (Strangely he is an angel at the after hours emergancy vet clinic - maybe he knows he better behave because whatever we are there for at 2 in the morning is going to cost me an arm and a leg.)
