I have a probably dumb question for you. I have seen dogs mushing singly, in teams of 2,4,6,8 and 12. There are probably 10s but I haven't come across them. So here is my question: Are there different types of races that generally use more or less dogs? Is the number just set by the race organizers? Are activities like recreational day mushing or camp trips by dogsled more likely to use a different number of dogs? Ok, I guess thats questions but anyway perhaps you can help me out.

Puppies new to each other - should I worry? Advice welcomed!

My Border Collie "herds" my Lab cross and my cats - it is no problem, for us anyway. In fact when in herding mode Kavik has never even touched the cats and has only hip-checked Zaphod. Herding is a modified dog behaviour which has circumvented the "kill" part of "chase and kill" its just "chase" (and control) - moderately safe, especially as far as dogplay goes (a herding dog that kills or does significant injury to livestock is not terribly useful.) Every dog is differnet though, if you feel the behaviour is over the top a dog behaviourist might be useful, try to get one familiar with herding breeds if you go that route. -
I like Wellness, Wysong, Innova, Solid Gold and of course Canidae. For those that absolutely can't get the above I suggest President's Choice New Zealand Lamb formulae. Its pretty good - for a grocery store brand. Go with one of the others though if you can though.

A blood test would be an unlikely source of resolution. There are no simple blood tests for breeds that I'm aware off. It would have to be genetic testing and you would need a base of compiled information to compare it too. So someone previously would have had to research canine DNA by breed and clarify what makes one an American Bulldog and another a pit bull. The differences on a genetic level would be miniscule and the research would have been expensive and has very little practical money-making applications, therefor I doubt such base information is available. I think if this sort of thing happens more and more often (as it is likely to with breed bans increasing) there will be lots of work, possibly paid consultant type work, for experienced show judges. I would think they would be the best sources for breed identification. Vets are good but they don't HAVE to be able to identify paticular breeds based on appearance.

It's a nine hour drive to Ottawa, I probablly won't make it. Has anyone seen the by-law proposed yesterday or something in London. -extra insurance required -higher dog licencing fees -mandatory muzzling for . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ANY DOG DEEMED THREATENING BY ANYONE. Additionaly there is a possibility of the following: Pits, Rotties, Akitas, GSD and Labs have been put on a dangerous breed list here in London and they would automatically be affected by above and would be required to apply for special permit within 90 days.
-
Kat - People here don't seem to know the difference between a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and any of the other breeds listed. While I would understand confusing an American Staffordshire Terrier, an American Pit Bull Terrier or a "pit bull" I personally think the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is an identifiably different dog. The law is to vauge in many points and has too much lattitude. Even were I wholly for BSL I could not support this bill. Sad when some of the people who run your country are morons.

Anyone know anything? I know it hasn't passed yet so it certainly could still fail. The Upper Senate has a record of sitting on animal/livestock legislation but I think that is due to (lucrative) pressure from agricultural special interests. They are the ones responsible for the death of every effort to toughen up animal abuse laws. Anyway the more I think about it and the more pits I see in more own province that could be affected the more I think that at the very least the current propossed legislation may be too much. I am not oppossed to the idea of limited breed specific legislation that does not include banning but I cannot bring myself to support the actuallity of this new proposal.

Damn I missed this earlier, how did it go?

Kavik will play tug for 32 min straight - no letting go. He can be lifted off the ground while holding on. That may not be impressive for more muscular bulky dogs but I think its great for a BC. We built up slowly, your dog will let you know when he is pooped and dogs' work ethic is usually way better than peoples so he'll likely play long enough to get a decent work out - if he likes tug games. You get the most out if it if your dog will pull/jerk backwards so you may want to encourage that some. If you are concerned about possession issues intersperse tug games with dropit/leaveit training. Some people feel that tug games inspire aggression. I myself haven't found it to be a problem in dogs with average temperments or even work oriented temperments but you may wish to investigate the issue yourself to decide.
-
Don't worry AAP that is not something Doberfanatic is likely to do I think. Perhaps she wants to build muscle to display the athleticism of Dobermans - You show your dogs don't you Doberfanatic? Anyway, you could try playing tug - Kavik gets quite a neck and shoulder work out from the backwards tugging and pulling action. Of course if playing tug is out for your dogs due to the alleged aggression/dominance related issue you could try climbing, a-frams or steep rocky surfaces where they can't dig in with their rear feet as well?

I saw him too, so glad someone gave him a chance - it was obviously a wise choice. I loved the little spring he would do occasionaly - remarkable.
-
They are getting new signatures at the rate of about one every 15 seconds or possibly even faster. That should be moderately effective.
-
Isn't being slightly to moderately cow-hocked desirable for working herding breeds, something about maneuverability. Maybe Kat would know.
-
Ah, they give us so much - love, snuggles, help - comedy. :D
Dung (5)
DUNG! You have got to be kidding! Dung! I just . . . how can . . . ridiculous!

I fear I agree, he is too late for adolescents. He is a bit of a googy dog. He can be athletic occasionally, he jumps beutifully - its just walking he has a problem (well stairs too but only going up.) I suppose I could get a ladder and do that rear feet awarness training but he is kindof amusing just as he is.
-
Zaphod who is now getting close to 2 years old is going through a clumsy phase or another clumsy phase I guess I should say. He is tripping up the stairs and skidding on the tile and cement floors. I don't know what the deal is. Unless its because I've finally got his nails nice and short (I gave up and went to a groomer a couple months in a row) but I'm not sure that would make a difference on those surfaces anyway. In any case he always has the most perplexed look an his face, I wish I could get a pic of it. One time he actually turned half around to look at his back half accusingly.

Could be lots of things. Its somewhat possible that she is about to go through a growth and is tired but it could very well be more serious than that. Dehydration sounds like its a possible symptom though. Push the water, give small ice chips and call the vet. Until all innocs are finished Parvo is a concern.

Weimeraner? A weim wouldn't change the bodyshape or fur colouring of a Dobe alllll that much would it and they have grey/blue eyes right?
