1.
[ My emotions are mixed.I think if I can whelp one litter in my house then a licensed breeder should be able too also. But according to regulations your house is not good enough to whelp puppies and meet USDA requirements.
I'm reading the rules and reg's with a different opinion. Personally, I'm not worried about the USDA requirements. If I want to whelp out a litter of pups in house, then I do it.......and have done it and will continue to do it. But, then again....we do not sell to pet families. According to tax law in some Counties, our dogs are considered Agriculture and are tax exempt.
  2. That is terrible. I hope the outcome is good. I searched the net, but only come up with "heat" stroke. Would you feel comfortable giving him water with a syringe (so he won't dehydrate)? Do you think the medicine for the Arthritis caused the stroke? Is he on Rimadyl, by chance?
  3. Yep, that would make more sense, wouldn't it? BUT, I have seen some sorry excuses of a hog and cattle operation. Some people just do not care about the animal. They are not going to take time to do things humanely or correctly. If you see how some small hog farmers treat their hogs and piglets....you'd have nightmares. Not to mention some of the Dairy farmers and their treatment of the bull calves and cows (in general).
  4. Told you. TLC --- I keep getting mixed signals here. Why are you (were you) so worried about this? Were you (are you) worried that you can no longer sell pets without being regulated? OR, are you worried that regulation would put you out of business? If you are worried/concerned about the humane treatment of dogs, from persons selling pets from their home, then you should seek to pressure local officials to enforce the laws that have been delegated to them and enforce or pass ordinances at the City or County. Many people view animals......as JUST an animal, including a dog. Their views are such that the way a person treats an animal (dog) is their business, because it is JUST an animal --- no feelings, no emotion, not on the level of humans. These same people also treat humans in a poorly manner, also.
  5.
I need help, I have just re-homed a BC from a rescue, and they do not have much on her back ground but from what I can tell this Little girl was left alone to amuse herself in a backyard. When she is let out all she dose is run a 3 foot pattern in my yard and barks at the passing cars, she will not run the rest of the yard. I do not leave her back there long, I am worried this is not good for her nor my neighbors that do not like the constant barking. She dose this even after going to the park for play time. Please how do I break this pattern.
Is the pattern back and forth or in a circle? If she's running in a circle, this is indicative of a dog that has spent her entire life or most of it on a chain. She is only use to running a circular pattern. Please take no offense in what I'm fixing to say --- herding bred dogs should not be sold or re-homed to PET families. They were bred for working livestock. Some do not adapt and will never adapt to a backyard setting. Most have a high prey drive and are in-tune with every little thing that moves --- thus will bark, chase, or try to work (herd) the object. She is barking because she is bored and is amuzing herself, or because she is afraid. She is telling the rest of the world that she is there and (please) do not come into her territory, because she really doesn't want a confrontation. If possible, could you involve her in any sports dog activities? Or...herding classes?
  6. That's funny. Cats!! They are cheap entertainment.
  7. No, I was just giving you something to think about. I agree with the Carol and Horsefeathers that Haz doesn't know her place and is confused. Being the alpha and taking care of the "pack" is a hugh responsibility for a dog that doesn't have the confidence in the first place (to take on this task). Yeah, that was one of my favorite parts in the that movie!! Too funny.
  8.
Hobbit, Yes, I am speaking of farmers that quit farming hogs and crops to farm dogs. They are making more money on dogs. They make few changes, add fencing around hog houses and put a few dogs in each pen.
Maybe in Illinois --- but, there is a MILLION head swine operation in the Texas panhandle that is definately making more money with swine, than dogs. The hog houses (most of them) that I've seen are immaculant. The hogs are housed in barns (finishing, gestation, or farrowing) with concrete floors that have an automatic wash system. The feces and urine is washed into a lagoon (not a septic system --- which is against State rules and reg's in Texas). In the lagoon, the effluent vaporates or is used as irrigation on fields. It's all concrete, there are no muddy pens > because mud stresses an animal and causes weight loss, lessens rate of gain, health problems. There are minimum flies, because they have automatic fly spray systems. There are no mosquito's because they have automatic water bowls. The hogs press a bar that fills the bowl up, water doesn't usually stand in the bowls, and if it does .... it's not for long. Most barns are equipped with fans, water mist systems and the concrete stays cool in the summer. There are heat lamps for the winter for warmth. I know this wasn't a HOG issue ---- but, most hog producers (here in Texas) take pride in their program, their hogs and their housing....and are making more money off the hogs, then they would selling dogs. Like anything else, there are also bad hog producers. They usually don't stay in business very long. Depending on the number of hogs or cattle > they are regulated in Texas ---- but, that's another OFF THE TOPIC story.
  9. I am so glad that my dogs are not registered with the AKC and never will be. The AKC has become an evil empire, large Corporation, that is forever seeking monitary ways to feed the fat monster. Backstabbing, badmouthing, clawing the way to the top, it's who-knows-who, who is sleeping with whom, well known handler (no matter that their dog really isn't the best, they win anyway for who they are), money - money and more money. Maybe it started out being "all about the dog", but has grown past that into all about reaching and achieving the "golden dog".
  10. A dog that is used to a raised voice (yelling, screaming), thinks that is the norm. I spent some years working around Narcotic dogs. Most of the handlers would yell their commands to the dogs. Some of the older, more experienced handlers would whisper or use a nice low voice to give commands to their dogs. The yelled at dogs, would ONLY respond to yelling (and ignored whispers or low voice commands). The whispered at dogs, worked adequately with the low voice and became uneasy with yelled commands.
  11. ......um, use baler wire to hole down the tape and his mouth shut. Better use a disclaimer for that one......just kidding.....do not do this. There, hope we're covered.
  12. She and Miss Cleo should go into business together! Both are frauds!
  13. Dogpaddle --- :o Marble --- you can exhibit dominance by standing over her and hugging her with YOUR chin on the top of her head.
  14. No, but duct tape works very well. kidding....just kidding, calm down.....
  15. Bensam -- are you sure it was a stroke and not Vestibular Syndrome? Here is an interesting article. http://www.peoriahs.org/vestibular.html http://ilil.essortment.com/dogearproblems_rmib.htm
  16.
I don't know which is worse, the hog houses and muddy pens, cold in winter, hot in summer, flies feeding on ears and mosquito's spreading heartworm (although most give Ivermectin liquid).
WD, you are talking about dogs, here and not a hog operation, right?
  17.
My border collie will eat one day and not the next day. Is this normal? :-?
Some Border Collies would rather eat a little bit at a time all day long, than to set down to a meal, once or twice a day. A shy BC may feel threatened at the time of feeding, for what ever reason, and may opt to not eat because he doesn't feel secure enough.
  18.

Anna screams, stomps, shouts, throws things at Hazel,
POOR HAZEL!
Agree..... :-?
  19.
do ACD's ever grow out of this stage? :onfire:
They ONLY get worse.....just kidding. Their intelligence affords them the ability to constantly out think you. Generally, yes they will outgrow the rebellious teenage years. It depends on the individual dog. Some get more defiant as they get older, some mellow to a workable level, some are just going to be a pain forever.

    Kenzo

He gets in your spot because it's warm and he likes your smell. It is comforting and it makes him feel secure.
  21.
Yes yes ain't he cute and your right he's an Rott X ACD.
I know I'm late....but wanted to reinterate: that is NOT an ACD. ACD's do not have blue eyes, nor do they come in that merle pattern. It's a pet peeve, so forgive me for ranting. ACD's NEVER have blue eyes, unless they are cross bred. They NEVER have a merle coat pattern, unless they are cross bred. He does, however look like a Catahoula Leopard Dog. Koolie, I'm with you --- he's beautiful and I love that color.
Hobbitt, you are almost making me feel bad for being on unemployment!!!
So very sorry, that was not my intentions. It was merely a statement. Drawing an Unemployment check, while looking for employment and wanting another job --- is quite different from someone that can work, just don't want too because they are too lazy or because they would rather live off the government. On bended knees, asking for your forgiveness.
