She nailed a bird in the backyard..and a mouse earlier. When I took them away, they were pretty mangled.... I had to kill both of them. They would have been in pain otherwise. I WISH she would stop trying to hunt.... She doesnt kill them, just drags them around. Leaves that unpleasant task for me, after she's mangled them beyond saving... gggrrrrr.....
Ohh, Rowie does the exact same thing! She's always been a bird dog, but never actually caught one! Then one day, there was a pigeon with a brocken wing/sick that couldn't fly very well, and Rowie started chasing it and it bumped into a wall( :o) then Rowie grabbed it, and started running around with it in her mouth! I was beyond disgusted, and when I finally DID get it from her, it had a HUGE guage in it's side, it's lung was punctured, and it was wincing in pain. I couldn't do anything about it, the poor pigeon! It just scares me that such an innocent dog could do such a thing! :(

Tomorow is Rowie's appointment at the vets...you know, to get her clipped and to remove all those ticks! I'm really worried, what if something goes wrong? I won't be able to stay there, because I have school tomorow(In Bahrain, saturday and sunday are schooldays, while Thrusdays and Fridays are holidays) and it's at 8 O'clock ShARP! Oh, I'm so worried, but this always happens when we go to the vets, so hopefully, nothing will go wrong... :D Wish Us Luck! :D Rowie

Sorry, thats Hillsborough, NJ! I don't think anyone here lives in NJ do they? :-? Does anyone live near that area? Here's another guy that deserves a chance: http://www.petfinder.org/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=941501&adTarget=468doggeneral&SessionID=3ed8bff343f50ca1-app3&display=&preview=1&row=0 CHIP'S STORY Dog Labrador Retriever,Terrier Mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Male I.D: Notes: Chipper came to us about 9 mths ago when he was only a puppy. He is fully grown now, about 1 1/2 years old and about 40 lbs. He spent this past weekend with one of our foster families; we wanted to give this poor guy a break from kennel life and to see how he would behave in a family environment. Well, Chip passed with flying colors! He was friendly and loving to the family and their 12 yr old son. Chip was easy to walk, sat patiently while the family ate their meals, slept soundly in bed w/their son, only barked when the doorbell rang, doesn't shed and was a joy to have. He was playful like a puppy at times and a "lap dog" (as you can see from the picture) at other moments. Chip's problem is that when people come to see him, he races out of his cage and jumps and kisses them; so happy to be out. The first impression of him can be overwhelming. Once out of the kennel environment however, Chip is a terrific dog. He would be a loyal companion if someone would give him a chance. Please call Leslie in Hillsborough to meet this super pup! 908-218-1939, or fill out an application below. Also in Hillsborough, NJ. Heres another one! Spackle Dog Boxer,Terrier Mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Male I.D: Notes: WHAT A CUTIE!!! Spackle was rescued from a kennel in Newark within hours of being euthanized because of lack of space for him. Luckily, we had a spare cage for this fellow. He is young, only about 1 or 2, and doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He would be great with kids and probably other dogs and cats too. He's mostly white with one black eye and his black dalmation spots softly showing. He weighs about 45 lbs and is playful and friendly, just a very loving dog who should be with a family. He's terrific! Please call Leslie to meet him. He is in Hillsborough at 908-218-1939, or fill out an application below. These pups seem like such sweeties, I hope someone from NJ sees this!

There has been a lot of talk about breeding these days, and of homeless animals, and of Labs. So I went to Pet Finder, and just scribbled in any zip code, and was astonished at the number of Lab/Lab mixes I found! I knew there was an over ubandance of Labs, and that there was a problem with Labs and stuff, but never did I expect to see so many Labs/Lab mixes... Here's the site for anyone who is intersted: http://www.petfinder.org/pet.cgi And here is a pet that seems really sweet, if anyone lives in Hillsborough, or is willing to drive there for this little guy. He seems like the perfect pet! http://www.petfinder.org/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=1562525&adTarget=468doggeneral&SessionID=3ed8bff343f50ca1-app3&display=&preview=1&row=0 CALVIN Dog Boxer,Terrier Mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Male I.D: Notes: What a cutie! Calvin is new to our shelter, but quickly becoming a favorite to all!!! He's approximately 1-2 years old, weighs about 45 lbs, has short hair, sheds very little and is just a happy fellow. He loves people, would be great with older kids, and seems to not mind the other dogs and cats he is around. He has a gentle, friendly nature, not a mean bone in his body. He would truly be a great pet!!! He is in Hillsborough, so just give Leslie a call to meet this special guy at 908-218-1939, or fill out an application below. Hope someone can give this guy a try! :D

Disgusting Ticks-Go Bye Bye!
Rowie-the-Pooh replied to Rowie-the-Pooh's topic in Everything about dogs
Once you get the ticks under control - look into Frontline - ticks carry other diseases besides Lyme, and you may need to have your garden fumigated to get rid of them. Once they are in place, they are hard to get rid of, but a professional "bug zapper" (like here in the states, we have Orkin) should get rid of them for you. Good luck! Poor Rowie, ticks are just HORRIBLE
Thank you Courtnek! I've been begging my mom to let me order from the internet! I can only get these brands through the internet, I've even checked my vets! They said the didn't have ANYTHING that I can use against ticks. :-? Should I get my mom to read this thread? Maybe it will change her mind? I hope so! I REALLY want Frontline or Preventic! I'll also get the bug zapper, the problem is we have SO many insects in our garden! :o Our garden is like a jungle! Hopefully, we can get these darn ticks under control! :x Thank you all soooo much for your help! :D WHERE OH WHERE would I be without you? mwauuah! :D -
Ohhh, that sounds great! :D I'll try it on Rowie and let you know how she likes it!
-
 R.I.P. Mr.Hedgie. I never knew you, but you must have been a good soul!  Awwww, they sound like a cool toy, but, ofcourse, we don't get them here!

Anyone have info on Canidae or Innova's testing practices?
Rowie-the-Pooh replied to Sanvean's topic in Nutrition
Sanvean, I don't use Canidea on my dog, because I don't get it here. :( But many of the members here use it, and from what I understand it is GREAT! I don't think they test on animals, only IAMS does(from what I know). But atleast it would be better feeding Canidea than IAMS. -
And as much as I hate to refer you back to Petfinder, you will notice that there are 8549 labs listed on it.
:o :o :o Oh the poor babies! I'de adopt all of them if I had the time and money, and if I lived in Missouri! Poor babies!

I know what you mean Star... In Bahrain it is much, much worse! ALL the puppies are from Puppy Mills! :x NONE are from breeders, there are NO breeders. The ONLY breeders are probably just Pom breeders or any kind of fluffy dog! :x It's really bad, the people here don't know ANYTHING about breeding, al they do is breed! They think it's GOOD! I'm so happy I got Rowie from a guy who was selling her instead of a PUPPY MILLER! I was smart enough not to buy a puppy from one. It really hurts me when I go into supermarkets, and there are ads that say "Puppies for Sale". And this happens EVERY time I go into supermarket! It's really hard to live in Bahrain if your a dog lover..

Why desex dogs??? Come on guys, I need FACTS!!!!

Why desex dogs??? Come on guys, I need FACTS!!!!
Rowie-the-Pooh replied to Aroura's topic in Everything about dogs
I found a really good website, unfourtunatly, the lady breeds "Labradoodles" and sells them as family pets, abd is against some of my beliefs, and I'm afraid posting the site will give people the wrong idea... So I just copied/pasted:
EARLY DESEXING (NEUTERING) OF PUPPIES Traditionally dogs have been desexed at about 6 months of age, just before they reach sexual maturity. It was thought that desexing earlier than this might affect the development of the urinary tract and lead to urinary obstruction in males and "immature vulva" in females. Controlled experiments in the United States have shown that this is not the case and now large numbers of puppies are being desexed at 6-12 weeks of age, both in the US and Australia, with no ill effects being reported. Studies have shown that there are differences in behaviour and development between dogs desexed before and after puberty. Dogs that are desexed before puberty tend to remain more "puppy like" in their behaviour. But the timing of pre-pubertal desexing was not shown to have an effect on development. There was no repeatable difference between pups desexed at 6 weeks and at 6 months. Desexing puppies at six to eight weeks of age is quick and simple and puppies recover rapidly and are feeding and playing within half an hour of surgery DESEXED MALE DOGS Most people when buying a family pet have a strong preference for female puppies. This is not at all surprising given typical male dog behaviour. If you wear tattoos and own a Pit Bull Terrier you may expect, and enjoy, a bit of macho behaviour in your dog. However most people don't want a family pet that cocks its leg on every post, marches up stiff legged and bristling to sniff the scent glands of every dog it meets, bolts the minute a bitch within a five mile radius comes into season, and most importantly runs any risk at all of biting anyone. Male dogs desexed at an early age will show little or none of this behaviour. Although most do learn to lift their leg to urinate they will do this predominantly to relieve themselves - not to scent mark their territory, which is the function of this distasteful male dog habit. While they may show interest in females in season this interest is not strong and doesn't lead them to wander. Desexed males are not prone fighting or to dominance aggression and do not figure in the statistics on dog attacks on people. Many studies have shown that lots of men strongly resist the idea of owning a desexed male. If you are reading this and find yourself among this group it is important to think through why you are buying a pet. Are you looking for an animal that reflects your personal self image or do you want a childrens pet? This is a serious question and I do not mean to appear judgemental. I fully sympathise with men who feel that they couldn't own a Chihuahua or a toy Poodle, but I also believe that when the animal is to be a family pet compromises needed.
Taken from : http://www.family-pets.com/desexing.html And another one:
Desexing Bitches are desexed for a number of reasons: to prevent the season cycle which occurs twice a year for 3 weeks (This may attract many male dogs to property where the bitch is housed resulting in fighting and destruction of gardens, or the escape of inseson bitches); to prevent unwanted pregnancies with the associated problems of rearing puppies and finding proper homes for them; to prevent breast cancer and uterine problems frequently found in entire (undesexed) bitches that have not had puppies. Male dogs are predominately desexed to prevent fighting and straying. The preferred age for desexing dogs is usually between two and six months. Your veterinary surgeon will advise.
Taken from: http://www.rspca.org.au/animalcare/dogs.asp And this is a really good one, I couldn't paste it here, so I put the link.. Disgusting Ticks-Go Bye Bye!
Rowie-the-Pooh replied to Rowie-the-Pooh's topic in Everything about dogs
That's a little like what happened to me...me, my sister, and my mom got these weird bumps all over our legs and arms..at first we thought it was chiggers, but then when we went to the doctor he said we were allergic to something Duck brought in the house... :-? Then I read in a book that a lot of stuff dogs get can be in humans, and our bumps looked like a picture with a person infected with ringworm.. :o So then my mom was like, we have to move Duck out of the house for a while and see what happens..she almost had to go to a boarding place..everything's ok now...and she dodn't have to go. :P
Glad to hear everything went well Egg! :D Hopefully everything will go well on Sunday too! :D -

Oh, it's a WONDERFUL idea! :D Maybe I could do something like that over here? I mean, the dogs here are in pretty bad shape if you know what I mean... I'll just go and find a website about desexing dogs, and post it here! :D Be RIGHT back!
