Thanks everyone for your kind words. He is in a much better place now... the funny thing is that BK seemed to know- when Vicki got back from the vet she let him sniff her all over, and he was really subdued- not hyperactive for a change. He misses him SO much, more than any of us miss him... my poor little boy...

What Some People Will Do For Money...
bk_blue replied to Rottiegirl's topic in Everything about dogs
Very sad indeed. :x -
A Halti is very similar to a Gentle Leader. Both are head halters that connect to the lead underneath the chin of the dog, and are designed to stop the dog from pulling (if he pulls it's uncomfortable as his neck twists round). Hope this helps. :)

Woo-hoo! Go Lily!

I'm sorry to hear that Shady (I still go to call you by your other name!). You've got to do the right thing not only by yourself and your animals, but by any other animal that is at risk from this dog.

Today Rinny was put to sleep at the vet's. His suffering is over and after 16 wonderful years he is at rest. We feel relieved more than anything else, but it's still so sad. Farewell Rinny.

It's funny how dogs can sense people aren't in control of them. BK is good with most of us on the lead and excellent with my uncle, but if someone ie. a friend wants to take control of the lead he will test him/her to see how competent they are, and if they don't enforce any authority he will play up and be the dog from hell, but they still love him because he's so cute. I've got no really good advice to offer. Maybe you could use treats to get her to walk with other people on the lead around the house or something? Or even just looping the lead to someone else in your house/yard, and getting her to follow...? :-?

I have seen pics of Basset Hounds doing agility which is pretty cool. Everything is modified so they don't hurt their backs. I suppose you might also get this with agility for dachshunds? :) Ages ago I posted a link to a working dachshund club that I will try to find for you. You may be able to train your dachshund to do close to what it was bred for! :D

Tomson did something funny today. Last week Grandad found he had a wasps' nest in the bathroom window (outside), so he tried to have a go at getting them out and failed miserably (he did get some professionals in to do it later). Tomson got stung on the front foot by a rogue wasp and took the opportunity to sook about it. He would hold up the hurt foot when he was feeling like he wanted attention, and of course he'd get it, and this went on for a few days, always with his hurt foot. Routine: lift, look pitiful, attention. He tried today to do the same trick by holding up his foot, but he held up the wrong foot.
what a cute mutt, there is something about him that makes him look much more in the normal range than our mutts though bk :) maybe its because he's not looking at the camera though........:)
    Agreed Marble- but he has the potential to be a DMD (dog of mass destruction) like BK and Dresden.

I like Stewart Anthony. :D Blitz gets called Blitz-krieg (ie a gap between each syllable) when he is being naughty. Most of the time he is just Blitz, or Puppy, or BK. :)

Great news Luckychaos!

Blitzkrieg was originally going to be called Vince; we'd taken him home and were tossing around names, and I really liked Vince, but it just didn't seem to suit him. We had no idea what he'd been called prior to us adopting him, so we had nothing to go on except his appearance and personality. So my uncle actually thought of Blitzkrieg (no Nazi connotations though  ) as that's the name of an informal wine club he, my dad, and a few other of their friends have. The name suits him perfectly because he's crazy, fast as lightning, and likes to divebomb other animals (especially Rinny). :D Rin-Tin-Rin (Rinny)- fairly obvious where he got his name from! The original Hollywood GSD called Rin-Tin-Tin (who was found with his siblings and mother in a trench in France), the luckiest dog in showbusiness, is credited with saving Warner Bros from bankruptcy and delighted audiences everywhere with his tricks. :) Tomson- his sire was called Tom, so Grandad decided after having so many German-named dachshunds he'd go for something simple- son of Tom= Tomson.

BK is scared of cars, I think it's to do with his numerous experiences escaping from the yard and maybe coming close to being hit a few times. :( We went out yesterday and he shied away from at least 2 cars that I noticed. (I suppose it's taught him a lesson though.) He doesn't like fireworks either, I am pretty sure he's scared of them even though he runs around like an idiot barking at them. That's about it, he's pretty fearless otherwise. Except for the time we were walking down an alleyway at dusk doing a shortcut home, and on the other side of a corrugated iron fence this huge WOOF! came thundering out and BK jumped and squeaked and walked closer to me every time this other dog barked.

PG- I will also post some pics for you in the Pictures section of our dachshunds. (yeah, any excuse for me to post photos   )

PG- my grandpa has had dachshunds for several years now and I could fill you in on them a little. (also ask Goo- she has a mini, Annie.) Firstly- they are STUBBORN. They are also smart, surprisingly. 8) This makes them very hard to train- you won't however see many at obedience, maybe this is because their owners think they're small they don't need training. WRONG- I cannot think of a breed who would benefit more from it!!! They are also determined- originally bred to hunt badgers underground (hence their shape), they never ever give up on something once they have it in their sights. Their prey drive is very strong. They can be VERY dominant, especially entire males (this is where my experience lies). They won't back down from anything, not even if their opponent is three times the size of them, so if you do get one, get it neutered or spayed otherwise you'll be in trouble with Shadow. Stairs aren't great for them, but seeing as Grandad doesn't have many, it's never been an issue. Tomson likes to jump around like an idiot most of the time, he's on, off, on, off the furniture- it's impossible to get him to sit still. (yeah, did I also mention they are hyperactive?!?! A lot of dog in a little body.) Try to discourage them from jumping on and off things all the time, it is bad for their backs, but when they are puppies it's very hard. Also if you get one make sure it's kept lean- the excess weight these dogs put on easily does not favours for their backs either. Dachshunds do like to be walked and I think they need it, for the socialisation if not the actual exercise. As I said they have a lot of energy for something so small, so if you get one he/she will need to burn it off either by walking or playing games. With training- hummm I'm not sure. Clicker might be the way to go- these dogs LOVE food and love praise, but are stubborn, so I hope you have lots of patience. If you crack the sads with them in training (eg. they won't stay when you command them to), they will sulk and may refuse to obey you for the next hour. Dachshunds love comfort and being spoiled, they lap it up. It is also said that the longhaired ones have a more sedate temperament than the other types, the wire haireds are supposed to be more terrier-like, the smooths are in between. I can't really comment on this though, Grandad has only had smooths. Their temperament in general is very bright and outgoing. It is a breed fault for a dachshund to display shyness. They are really very entertaining little dogs if you let yourself be owned by one. Here are some links you might want to have a look at: http://www.dachshund-dca.org/ http://www.drna.org/ http://www.dachshundcircus.com/ (this is my favourite one, I reckon everyone should check this out!) http://members.aol.com/kevinS1092/winston/links.htm I would imagine there would be a few on Petfinder too. Good luck! :)

Your magpies are prettier than ours!! This is an Aussie magpie taken from this site: http://www.mangoverde.com/birdsound/picpages/pic186-9-2.html There is also a footy team called the Magpies- you must hate them on sight, because everyone who doesn't barrack for them does LOL (kind of like Man United in English football).

Sorry to hear that Shady (I always go to call you koolie still! )- hope your mum gets better soon. Roo I love this story, thanks for sharing

 Reminds me of when Rinny was top dog- *he* was the only one allowed to bark at strange noises and patrol the boundaries, and BK had to stay put and shut up (very hard to imagine him shutting up!). Kind of like a big brother looking after the little one. :)
