Another dumb question, but Gigi, remember when I aksed you about the weird colored variation I saw in a park? It looked like this one: http://web1.petfinder.org/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=1176828&adTarget=468doggeneral&SessionID=3dc2d3674fbb242f&display=&preview=&row=0 I'll bet that if you can see this dog it's crossed with something else?

K and Sasha, I hate to say this but I am seriously leaning towards a Shiba  . I have even started scouting Shiba rescues for a cat safe adult dog. We just don't have the time for a puppy, and that worries us a bit about a rescue dog too :( But on the brighter side a little bit smaller dog might be a little easier to bring into the home with our 2 cats with SERIOUS attidtude! At least that's what we have been thinking..... Anyway thanks again for the information everyone! I have enjoyed my education by DOG-O so much, I'm really glad that there is a place like this  oh gosh got all warm and fuzzy there didn't I.....not much like a mad scientist

In my ever continuing effort to stump the expert dog-o pannel I ask this question: Are there any breeds of dogs that are too small to keep up with an average sized, but slightly chubby running human being? I am not talking about toys or teacups or whatever they are called, but rather the 20-30-40# dogs, e.g. Shibas, American eskimos, Spitz, etc. One criteria I have for my next dog is a running or really jogging partner and I was wondering if this eliminates some breeds? Please forgive me if I have asked this question before.....I am going to think about which breed of dog is a perfect fit for our home until the day we bring the bundle of fluff home forever.

I hate to say this, but the Malamute/Basset cross is cute

Slightly off topic and just to satisfy a question that has been nagging at my mind for awhile.....Do you guys think that if a one year old dog was smacked in the face with a declawed cat paw that could make the dog cat aggressive? Or on the other hand is being cat aggressive more dependent on prey drive and attitiude of the dog? I was just wondering about people's opinions on this topic if they had one.

Hobbit, As usual you are right on with the electric fence. A friend of mine had 2 huskies that were held in by a relatively low fence with a little bit of electric fence on top. Funny thing though, whenever power went out (happens lots during Wisconsin winters, LOL) the dogs would get out and roam. Of course this only happened when someone, like me, was taking care of the little stinkers  :o  :o

I checked in today the yes votes are in the lead, but barely........ :o

Great suggestions :) I love this site I'm always learning something new! I don't know what the rest of you will think about this suggestion, but it helped my dog adjust to the crate while I went to work. I have to say I used this on temporary basis and it's not a good idea for overweight dogs. Also I have to admit this idea was put in my head by a vet tech. I don't have that much experience yet. When I was first adapting our 1 year old dog to a crate, which she really HATED (stray from the pound). I used to take a large Kong toy and put wet food and little pieces of dry food inside the kong and then put the toy in the freezer overnight. When I was ready to leave for work I would sneek the toy into the crate, then give the dog the command to get into the crate, "go to bed", in a really happy voice. BTW I had to work with treats for 2 months before she would go into the crate on command, before that I had to carry her over and place her in the crate, but that's another story. Anyway she would get so busy working the food out of the Kong she wouldn't even notice me leave. Before that trick she would bark and bark and bark until I came back, bad for the dog, bad for the neighboors. I do have to comment that I would come home for lunch and take her for walks and play and training about the 2 months, so getting someone else to help you would really help. Please let us know how things are going, sounds like a tough situation.

Powerful words delivered with such emotion, tears to my eyes

Oh gosh guy, this makes me so happy :D I hate the feeling I get when I think of all the poor dogs/cats out there without a home, I feel so helpless, even if I adopted as many as I could afford, it wouldn't even make a dent. Thanks for commenting about PETA horsefeathers, I'm always afraid they are the only organization out there working for animal welfare. I'm gald that smooshie knew of another organiztation. I'm always afraid that because of my profession I will have a hard time finding an organization that I can really get behind. I'll check into the organiztion that smooshie recommended and browse around on the web for some other groups to contact.

Alright, we mostly agree it sounds like a good idea......now does anyone have and idea about how to get the ball rolling? I hate to even say the name of this group, but PETA ( ) has lots of contacts and supporters in Hollywood. Since Hollywood has lots of money and controls some of the T.V. programming do you guys think this could be a place to start? K, I know the from the yahoo group there could be people who would know people, could you bring up that idea on that thread? Anyone else who knows someone from PETA could you talk to them? I just can't contact them in my line of work......but I would definately go all out to start a fund rasing campaign in my area for commercials like this. As for worrying about other countries, for right now this is where I live and I feel like this is where I can make a difference, if I can reach another 10 people and they tell 10 people, the message jsut might spread to 10 thousand people

My partner and I were thinking.......... Has everyone seen the "TRUTH" commercials about smoking? We were wondering if an animal rights group could raise money to make a comercial like that for spaying and neutering? Maybe people just don't stop and think about the numbers of unwanted pets euthanized each year in this country? I would definately help raise money for a national comercial like that here in the USA and anywhere else it could be used to educate the public. I know that before we adopted our dog from a shelter we sort of knew about the problem, but didn't really think about it everyday like we do now.........Just something to think about. I wonder what it would take to make this a reality.........

I went and voted YES, even I have to agree with PETA on this ONE thing :o :o :o :o :o :o

WOW that is one GREAT looking dog!!! That has to be my absolute favorite breed combination  I agree with Carol, we named our last dog, then she did something which would have given her a better name, but it was too late

Never mind, the woman lived in the U.K. until she was 13, so it's not likely she contracted the disease here, just incubated the disease here. http://www.cnn.com/2002/HEALTH/conditions/10/17/madcow.us/index.html

I went out for lunch and saw a blurb on CNN that the first documented case of mad cow has occured here in the good old beef eating USA. Guess the vegetarians will have the last laugh on all of us carnivores

OOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH come on deep, I love that show. I know that she is not really psychic, but that show is still really fun!

We lost animal planet when we moved to GA...we are trying to save up money to buy a house here and thought we would try to live w/o cable. So far so good, but we really miss Pet Psychic and Good Dog U........

I know that I'm a novice at this dog stuff, but when I have to make a decision like this for some creature other than myself I try to put myself in the creature's place. If my tail had been poorly docked would I rather have more pain up front and less pain later or just take the risk of less pain now and take the chance that the later pain will never happen. Sorry to hear about your troubles, hope things get better soon.

Help me convince to have dogs out of cold!

Gordonmom, You are absolutely correct the spread of chronic wasting disease to humans has only occurred in the Minn. case, but this disease is in the same family as Kuru (human cannibals), TSE (mink), scrapie (sheep), and cows (BSE or "mad cow" disease). These disease have been shown to easily pass between species and with BSE have been suggested to pass to people through consumption of meat......as a scientist I am concered that it's only a matter of time until chronic wasting disease spreads to people, but this is PURE SPECULATION on my part. I base this speculation on the ideas I have seen published on other forms of the disease. What I can't reason out in my mind is how an animal like a deer could obtain this disease in the wild, unless they are getting into cattle or domesticated deer food supplies (these contain protein from animal sources). There could be another way to transmit the disease that we haven't discovered yet, which scares me most of all :o
