my suggestion would be 2-3 times a day get out the clippers and feed her chicken when she sees them. do it for a week and see if she gets any calmer just seeing them. then touch a toe with clipper chicken chicken chicken . . . you know where this goes. you could try the dremel but if she is not accustomed to it i would use the same desensitization process.

i agree with most of what you say in the previous post. we teach heel as a more formal command and leave 'let's go' for casual walks. do you specify a side for them to walk? i noticed in the video that the dog crossed side to side. i prefer my dogs to be at my left side. as for the 3 hour walk home -- i suggest a cell phone or joining an autoclub!

i looked at your video of how to teach a dog to heel! i think what you describe in your video is more how to teach your dog to walk nicely on leash. heel is a very specific more complicated set of actions. while i feel loose leash walking is a precursor to heel this is not what i call heeling. you would never heel a dog for 3 or 4 miles in my mind. you heel a dog past a distraction (another dog, person, across the street for instance). heeling means be in an exact location at my left side. move when i move, stop when i stop and while you're at it sit when i stop, attention on my face the entire time. we teach this in pieces and then put it all together.

think small treats K they don't have to get whole steaks ya know!

oh definitely K you don't want to encourage the stress behaviors by coddling them. go on about your business as usual and if you happen to see calm behavior toss them a treat or two.

you can get the homeopet anxiety at [url]www.jefferspet.com[/url] didn't work worth a flip for gaia's general anxiety problems but it could work for baxter. the trick is knowing before the dog that a storm is coming and managing the behavior during the storm. then you can work a cc&d protocol in nice weather. as for management during a storm, pyr, do you have any rooms with no windows, no skylights, no view of outside? gaia used our powder room as a safe haven cause there were no window and it was dark in there. lots of dogs prefer bathrooms and even bathtubs (the old heavy ones not the newer fiberglass type).

ok now i'll pop in and say YES choke chain is a dirty word in r2's world. i realize and accept that some dogoers do use chokes but we don't have to agree to get along (right drjeff?) i prefer less aversive tools. for instance the suggestion of another collar was right on until you said choke -- even the name of the collar is aversive to me as it implies you want to choke the dog -- very old fashioned methods. i don't know many people who would say their intention is to choke their dog into submission -- but that's exactly what they are doing. what is wrong with putting another nylon (flat buckle) collar on for walks? *steps off soapbox* oh and drjohn yes we are always this vocal about our opinions love it or leave it. btw in which state do you practice?

i saw a gorgeous rottie in a family channel movie last night! it had joshua jackson (pacey from dawsons creek), claire forelani (meet joe black), and harvey keitel! i saw the rottie in the previews and i had to watch. it was a sweet chick flick called in the shadow of the sun i believe. pacey was always my fave now i remember why! :eating:

there are lots of things you can do to desensitize your dog to thunder or loud noises. buy a thunder sounds cd and play it very low volume. chicken chicken chicken for calm behavior. do that every night for a week and if he stays calm the next week volume up one level start again. if it actually storms let him get in the bathtub for goodness sake. if he feels safe there fine. what's the harm? soothing him during a storm especially if he is aroused/stressed actually encourages the stressed behavior. walk by the bathroom once in a while and throw a piece of chicken to him and then leave. i have heard but not tried peppermint oil on the paw pads is supposed to help too. you could try any number of the natural remedies for stress (rescue remedy etc).
