to start you can't afford to be asleep on your feet with annie -- she's huge and deaf! this is like the second "attack" in about a week? you need to go out with them every time they potty. they need to be on leash so that you don't have to play these silly games to get annie inside AND you need to take them out completely separately (crate one and take the other out -- repeat). annie needs some training plain and simple. deaf dogs are different. you are gonna need to be very conscious of her body language. how is hunterr handling himself?

ain't that the truth and it only takes a few days of daddy vacation to totally wreck the routine and training! -

oh yeah caribeaners work great too!
-
i don't know brands but whichever one you choose you can always get extra leash or tie-out clips and clip the crate door with those too!

whoa! what the hell just happened? i feel like i am back on the school bus in 7th grade. to quote ebby calvin 'nuke' laloosh, "So is somebody going to go to bed with somebody or what?"
-
remember you can always order samples of some of these foods and the foods themselves on the internet if that is more convenient!
-
i agree sabine in most cases (hush jeff) when i see people resort to aversives it indicates an undertrained dog.

exactly! i had a guy once with a separated shoulder in a sling who brought his dog and his 3 year old! now wtf does he think he is gonna get accomplished?

well i think i might have pissed off/scared away my first clients! am i scary (ess, jess, michele -> not a peep)? i think i might have mentioned this bozo in my class who basically wanted me to tell him it is ok to leash pop for attention  he looked shocked when i said no it is not ok. he was very heavy handed and just jerked this poor sweet little gsdx around all the time. i tried to give him alternatives - movement, call her name, food, etc. he did slightly better with me coaching. then it happened. his wife had just had wrist surgery and her stitches were still in. she got the bright idea to handle the dog. something happened and he wrist got re-injured and she dropped the leash. dad was like 3 feet away and the dog ran up to him. he picked up the leash and jerked her off her feet! well i saw red and as hard as i tried to keep my composure i couldn't! he met the sharp side of my tongue but i feel it was warranted. i could not have slept that night if i had turned a blind eye! of course he missed the last 3 classes and he is home jerking his dog around so i really accomplished nothing!

what TDG is trying to say ever so pc is that iams sucks in general as a pet food and you might want to look into other foods for your little guy! my number one recommendation is puppy kindergarten! find a class and get in it now. you need to get him out and around other dogs, puppies, people etc. early socialization is something you can't make up for later. it will greatly benefit you both!

neutrering is not a magical fix all! he may mark less and he may be less concerned with other males but it is not a cure for either. you will still need to work with him on manners and what is/is not acceptable.

Why do people take agressive dogs to Petsmart?
In other situations, where you have an aggressive dog that lunges at other dogs, regardless of whether or not the dog is muzzled or leashed, then no, i would say the owner of that dog should not bring the dog to PetSmart .
yes a lunging, snapping, snarling dog is not in a place with training where i would feel comfortable taking him that close to other dogs. -

if you notice drj i said as part of a cc&d protocol! assuming your dog is in the latter stages and already has a good cer around dogs (ie looks at you for chicken when he sees other dogs, sits when he sees other dogs, etc). you might also note that i said i would muzzle mostly for the sake keeping people away (they see muzzle they don't approach). you're right there are people who bring little muffy on a flexi lead and choke collar who have absolutely no idea what the dog is doing. she becomes lunch :evilbat: just kidding. you can move away or you can get the owner's attention! -

i think gaia is like a cheetah when she runs -- i wish you could see this dog run she tears it up -- she outran an italian greyhound! she is also very graceful when she wants to be especially with jumping so she is also like a gazelle. aspen well he is most like a human i guess. very mellow boy and would rather be around people. -
personally i am intrigued with the story about what she thinks happened when kiani was missing! you can't possibly know what happened when she was gone! you are dismissed -- now be gone!

ok i admit i didn't take the time to read thru all the posts and i am sure i am repeating what someone said somewhere but . . . . kudos to you oscar for asking if her dog was friendly this should happen before any dogs meet on leash. also remember that ultimately your own dog determines who he will or will not greet -- what i mean is that your dog should never be made to greet any person, pet, inanimate object if he is apprehensive or fearful! your biggest defense is turning and walking away -- there is always another path. when dogs are leashed and we hold the leash with a death grip and try to let them meet face to face in petsmart -- why do we then wonder why they become pissy (i certainly don't like every person i meet)? you take away their ability to run (flight) or even defer to the other dog. you, the handler, have to remain calm and leave a bit of slack in the leash if your dog is rushed or greeting another. also 3 minute face to face greetings are not appropriate -- really just a sniff hello nose to butt is sufficient -- then move on. as for this particular incident i do think you should be able to bring a dog aggressive dog to petsmart esp if you are using cc&d. as long as your dog is manageable and you are sure to tell others before it is too late (ie your dog is able to self-reward by going off) then i see nothing wrong with it. personally i would have soft-muzzled the dog as a little extra hint to other people. -
sorry you got bitten -- that sucks! could you not have moved him completely to another run and then retrieved the nozzle? reaching and grabbing and pushing and pulling in crate/run scenario is dangerous. maybe you do it all the time with no problem. there is always that one incident tho that makes you go oh yeah they have 42 teeth and i should really be more cautious. at least your reminder was relatively mild!
