oh i have a helper :) i taught aspen a while ago to pick things up for me when i drop them. then i taught him to put things in a box (toybox, laundry, garbage, anything can be a box for him). he's quite good at it too. however if he sees no work needin done he will create his own. he will steal the remote, drop it on the floor, and look at you as if to say "shall i get that for you, how much does it pay?" he knows full well i can't bend and get it myself haha. a dog that bargains -- he is smarter than me!

because my back is all jacked up i sometimes lie down on the floor to do my stretches (snap crackle pop). no matter where my pups are in the house when they hear the snap crackle pop or groans of agony they come running to me. both my dogs are leaners so when they sit with you they have to touch you. gaia usually tries to sit on my shoulder or chest while aspen takes the feet. they face outward as if "protecting" me until i can get up again. if hunny tries to come over and rub my back they will not hear of it -- they either distract him or nudge his hands away. it's quite endearing. i can just imagine what goes thru their minds -- like a police scanner "attention all units we have one momma reported down in the living room; repeat momma DOWN! please respond!" anyone else have funny little tidbits to share?

yes that's always fun -- to have someone who has absolutely no idea what they are talking about come up and put in their 2 cents. i think at that moment kat you should have held your tieout above your head and chased the lady haha. i am rotten i know :evilbat: once at the vet i was waiting, with aspen in a sit stay at my side, to pay and this lady comes up and says those are such mean dogs aren't they? then she just walked out. wtf? at those times i like to throw in a "KILL" or "ATTACK" neither of which mean anything to my dogs haha. maybe i could teach them that "KILL" means to pee on someone's shoe, now that would be a riot!

fruits with pits(stones) obviously seed them before you feed. i think i read that avocado the pit and the meat were dangerous, but am not positive. i stay away from onions and garlic oh and grapes/raisins are a no no too. i guess anything in a great amount to start could upset tummy but you already know that. there are very few veggies/fruits that aspen won't eat -- he doesn't care for cherry tomatoes i think because they "pop" in his mouth and he doesn't care for red bell peppers. now gaia much like me has a consistency problem she doens't like mushy stuff. she won't eat strawberries or blueberries and i have to freeze watermelon before she will eat it.

we give sweet potatoes, carrots, broc, cauli, green beans we also give fruit tomatoes, frozen watermelon balls (they love), frozen strawberries, bananas, apples

as if life in your house is not confusing enuff for carse! here is what i would do -- load up your pockets with snacks (dog snacks :D ) and when your granpa does something like try to trip carse or push carse or whatever pop a treat in his mouth, carson that is. this way maybe you can teach him when granpa pushes or "plays" with him he should come get a snack from you. you may be able to avoid a potentially bad situation here. i would also treat the situation as a child and dog -- never let them be alone together. if you see your granpa do something inappropriate it is ok to tell him no we don't do it that way. you might have to teach carse to go somewhere else for dinner esp if granpa will eat with you frequently. you could crate him near the table so he still feels like he is with the family. just my suggestions. ps i think granpa may need NILIF hahah!

i certainly didn't say i think they are cruel (unless you count those instances where people misuse them) -- i merely said i don't like them and they are not allowed in my classes. irena as far as schutzhund or protection training i will say you can do it without the prong collar. i have a k9 cop trainee (malinois) who is doing quite well on his flat buckle collar! as a matter of fact the dog who will be retired (gsd), when the malinois is ready, was trained out of country using punitive measures & has given his handler quite a problem. so he came to us -- strictly positive methods in our training. i think we have established that prongs are a matter of personal preferrence. we are pretty much all in violent agreement that most people (joe schmoe dog owner) are not mentally adept enough to use them correctly. we could argue all day the pros and cons and why we use or don't use them. i guess the last thing i will say is that if you choose to use them you should be damn sure you use them correctly!

alright here is my take -- like it or not. since so few people can actually understand the proper way to use the prong collar i do not allow them in class. most people can't grasp the concept of how/when they are to be used. for example i had one lady bring her swissie in on a prong and a flexi-lead (oh yes she did). as he pulled and pushed his way around the classroom she explained this is the only way she can "control" him. i said i see you're doing a bang up job there! personally i just don't like prongs. i am actually a big proponent of the front clip harness if your issue is pulling. they work much like a gentle leader for control of the front end but dogs seems to adjust to them very quickly -- unlike the gentle leader. in my experience (this doesn't necessarily apply to anyone here who uses them so don't go gettin all in a huff) when i see a dog on a prong collar it is usually an indication of a poorly/under trained dog. people start out with a flat buckle collar and the dog gets used to gagging and choking. then they move a step up to the choke collar and again their dog acclimates to the sound and nagging pull. next step prong collar. what really are these people teaching their dogs? to tolerate a tug on the neck? most people want the quick easy solution and they think it can be found here. my feeling is that it is your job as a dog parent to teach your dog to walk nicely on leash (or whatever the behavior) and yes people it can be done with a simple flat buckle collar if you put in the time and snacks.

good luck to whoever tries to train your dad hehe! tell your mom she is slacking!

[sniff sniff] canis you stink! she killed pepe? i know i am always on the lookout (smell out) for skunks in our yard cause my 2 would do the same! poor you! i hear nature's miracle makes a pretty good de-skunker you might try that just to get rid of the remaining skunkiness.
-
wait, who are you again? we may have missed you a tiny bit . . . glad you are home safe with your very well behaved pups! sounds like you were as busy in tx as at home!
-
whycome it's always a rottie thang? just kiddn. yes michele i know what you meant and i agree. if my dogs were to lick the "wrong" person they would be rioting for me to euthanize, but society as a whole seems to be more forgiving when the snap happy min pin breaks the skin. go figure!

yes a vet check is in order first thing. next, before we can really properly understand the scenario, we need to know on what occasion has he bitten/growled? what are you doing, what is he doing, what is going on in the room?
-
oh yeah sure, bring the rotties into it
-
i think you meant poor pititful DAL! that's sweet that you would let him sleep over! i don't think i would  my dogs, MINE! yes well i have never been one to share well with others haha.

barking is driving me distraction!

one of my friends has a relatively old dog who is both deaf and pretty much blind. she just went thru a period where the dog barked for no particular reason non-stop. i know it is frustrating especially when you and the neighborhood are trying to sleep. also hunny yells at gaia for barking at the squirrels and assorted vermin we have in the yard. i get so frustrated with him. i think gaia actually thinks his yelling is him joining in on the alert. so maybe zoe is "seeing" things and barking then you come down and join in the fun, plus she's getting attention. i don't have any advice except maybe a "hush" word so that you don't have to yell (you've probably already tried everything tho) -- will she busy herself with a kong or is she not interested? could she be moved to your room to sleep -- maybe that would quiet her if she could be near you? poor zoe & kat! -
good riddance! er um . . . i mean giddy up! i am sure the furbabes will miss you too. we will try to sustain without you -- it will be hard (heehee) but we have each other. rustle up a cowboy or two for us :D safe trip!

well my guess is that when you're together there are some noises that aren't usually heard and bodies flailing about, etc. do you use a crate? if so i would crate her for together time -- give her a fat kong and that should hold her for a good 10 minutes (haha just kidding)! if you can't crate i would probably tether her elsewhere with a fat kong. i am not sure i agree that she doesn't know her place in the pack. i think the strange noises and movements confuse and maybe scare her a bit. she might think kevin is hurting you. i mean your body flushes, your muscles get stiff, you moan etc she might interpret this as aggression. my vote is confine her whilst having relations :P

ess i always try to take the digi but i swear there is no time to snap photos. even if i show up with the exact intention of only taking pics (we need some for the website) i still end up helping with class so :eviltongue: ok you photo hungry sharks . . . i have one for ya but not from this particular class. this pup is a basset hound 5 mos old. SATISFIED? now stop throwing tomatoes or i shall have to retaliate :evilbat:

well they still can lift their front paws off the ground with this harness -- they just can't completely extend. so my concern would be climbing the fence. if they want out badly enough that you think they might climb i am not sure this harness would help. now if you were going to supervise when they had it on maybe the combo of you and the harness might be enuff to deter the climbing.

last night i had to fill in for puppy kindergarten again! i don't have pictures *ducks* because it is just to hard to snap and train, but if you want to read about the fuzzbutts i had in class here i go . . . ok so last night we had a mini doxie, a long haired chihuahua, a corgi, an australian shep, a rhodesian ridgeback, a husky, and a newf! they were all so fuzzy and cute. now that's a pretty diverse group of pups. usually we get at least on labby type dog. one of the other puppy classes has all labs -- i call it labapalooza :D

a friend of mine had a tv set that went wonky once in a while and she would just smack it with a rubber mallet -- maybe you're using the wrong tool
