Usually that will be okay as long as he doesn't come into contact with any other dogs. Remember though that with a pup that small you have to supervise any time on the tie-out, as you already know, they get into trouble so fast! Our first dog was like this, absolutely nuts, headstrong, wouldn't do ANYTHING you wanted him to, wouldn't cuddle (he actually grunted when you tried to hold him) ate a carpet, a love seat, part of the garage and about 86 pairs of socks... :drinking: Just remember, and I promise this, it DOES get better!

:D oh my, you have a full-on case of the puppy blues! we have probably all been there, and i can tell you from personal experience that everything you are going thru is completely normal! And i can also tell you that it WILL stop and it WILL get better and you WILL look back on this and laugh. As far as the biting goes, try pressing your thumb down firmly inside his bottom jaw and saying "NO". Also, Bitter Apple works for hands and feet. Unfortunately, puppies do not think poop tastes nasty...you might want to check with your vet on that one. Hang in there, and feel free to vent!

This seems to be such a hot topic, you guys! If I can add... Not ALL breeds that are "show dogs" have conformation that negates the working ability of that breed. The Pyr standard sets up a real livestock guardian dog. I think this probably applies to most of the older breeds but I don't have intimate knowledge of, say, the Bernese Mountain Dog standard. All I am saying is that breeding for conformation and breeding for the dog's original purpose are not necessarily mutually exclusive, and not necessarily detrimental to the breed's health. Many parent clubs do their own genetic research and testing.

oooooh-puppy!!!!! :D i can't wait to see him! (also we here on the board have been known to come up with some pretty good names if you need some suggestions! )

I have a question, I thought that schutzhund encompassed obedience, tracking AND protection? I could, as I am wont to be, completely wrong on this... Anyway I have seen schutzhund-trained GSDs in action and they are amazing to watch for their focus. I think it is not a bad idea at all, kind of along the same lines as teaching your barky dog to only bark on command... Good luck to you! It sounds like fun and rigorous training for both of you! (I am laughing to myself trying to imagine my pyr doing this. "What? I can't lie down now? How about now? Now?")

oh lord. that is so sad. how true is it though, especially the "slaughterhouse of goodwill". i don't understand how these folks (the "breeders" not the shelter workers) won't fork over $200 for a spay, yet they can live with this blood on their hands forever.

you guys are so nice! she is a pretty girl, very sweet-looking. They say that the "Pyrenean eye" should look right into your soul. Starfox-you met your first pyr! that's great! :D They are big, but so gentle and mellow as adults it's like having an extra couch... -

and show off my sasha! :D

hi courtnek! the pyr's double rear dew claws were for the snowy mountain slopes as they created a snowshoe effect for the dog-even when not in use they pretty much don't get in the way of sasha's every day life...they look like extra toes. Hey, I figure if it ain't broke...,

hey, allamericanpup, it's cool, i agree with you , i was just trying to point something out, ie the philosophy is different but the dog is the same. ya know?

All the best to you! (That black dog is gorgeous!!!!!!)

I am curious, did this practice originally start as a practical consideration, to get the "floppy things" out of the way for the dog's work? If so, is it just tradition that makes people carry it on today? It's illegal in some countries, right? Anyway. The Pyr has double rear dew claws, and I can't tell you how many non-pyr, or just non-dog people, think that I should have them removed...it is actually part of the standard, for one thing, and for another, ouch!

i agree, divineoblivion, that is pretty macabre. courtnek, i hear what you are saying and i do agree with you on the overpopulation and owner surrender issues, and certainly if the puppy mills were out of business there would indeed be more room for the dogs from other sources. And also that the shelters will never be empty, sadly, because of, among other things, humanity's paradoxical tendency to be inhumane. I was just kind of opening up another avenue, so to speak, to think about rescues. In answer to your question, yes! The Great Pyrenees is often seen with markings, ranging from lemon to light brown, reddish brown, grey and "blaireau", which is a sable-y color. As long as the dog gives the impression of being predominantly white and the markings cover no more than 1/3 of the body, it is permissible within the standard. I have never seen the butterscotch color markings that Fame has and was quite impressed! Also it is held that marked dogs carry better pigment, black pigment on the nose, eye rims and even nails being of paramount importance to the standard, so they are integral to any successful breeding program. Love my Pyrs, thanks for giving me the chance to explain! :D

i just wanted to point something out. i agree that supply and demand fuels the puppy mill/pet store machine. and that breeding dogs solely for profit is ultimately a ridiculous proposition. however, since the pet store caters to the impulse buyer, did it ever occur to anyone that the majority of the purebred rescue/shelter dogs are indeed from that very same source, given up by unprepared and uneducated owners, as after all the pet store will not take a puppy back if it "doesn't work out"? while i understand that not willingly feeding in to the supply/demand structure is imperative, the behavior, temperamental and structural problems often found in rescues are a direct result of the same machine, and we love them all the same, some folks even to the point of being self-congratulatory for rescuing from a shelter that very same pup. just a thought. this is by no means meant to be a blanket statement, just kind of a devil's-advocate point of view. by the way, why is it called an "ori-pei" ? where does the "ori" come from?
-
yes! yes! pictures! ;-)
-
i don't like it either. i think it condescends to both people and dogs. why compete over one when there are so many out there to choose from?
-
i love animal precinct too-those guys and girls are really tough! i especially like joe pentangelo, because at one point he adopted one of the dogs they found neglected, a mastiff/presa type dog even though he already had two dogs at home.

Crystal, first of all if that is the pup in your avatar, oh my GOD what a doll! :D (i am such a sucker for the sleeping puppy, but then again, who isn't!) I like the black wire Precision crate. Remember that dogs are denning animals so it not only keeps their little paws out of trouble but it gives them a safe spot to go. Just associate all positive things with the crate and never use it for punishment. Feeding the puppy in there at first is a good idea too. As far as how long they can hold it, the general rule is one hour per month of age. (this only applies to puppies, not grown up dogg, the longest i have left mine is nine hrs. during a work day but it sounds like you are home more often?) anyway. Good luck-it is worth it! Oh, another thing, the puppy will cry to get let out. Don't give in. It will shortly learn that crying gets him nowhere and he will settle down. If you give in, he will cry every time he wants a hug, and really, who can resist that!

i really liked seeing a black and white akita, i have never seen one before! at first i did not recognize him as an akita, i was just like "wow"! :D
