1. oh lord, that was great! So Kat, any sheep-chasing tales from Kes yet? :D
2. The American Eskimo comes in toy, miniature and standard, and like the Poodle, the only difference is size. The Toy is a little bigger than a Pom, the Mini is 12-18 lbs. or so and the Standard is up to 25 or 30 I believe.
3. toy american eskimo, alaskan klee kai, havanese, bichon frise, silky terrier...
4. I have a question on this. Did any of you notice that the handlers were dressed a little casually for "the world's most prestigious dog show"? Just curious. Also, why was the working dog entry so small?
5. look into the pom, definitely! we have one, she is 11. they live a long time, are decent watchdogs, and can get the exercise they need in the house. they do require quite a bit of grooming, however, and puppies are notoriously difficult to house train. they can get along well with other pets but do not realize how small they are which can get them into trouble with bigger dogs. they are not really a kid's playmate, but a great lap dog. there are a TON in rescue for some reason. Again, best of luck!
6. hmmm..... an american eskimo, maybe? they are hella cute, the standard size (the biggest of 3) is only 25-30 lbs. and they are fluffy.... they are also the most tractable and easily obedience-trained of the spitz-type dogs.
7.
Many people see growling as being big and tough, but the reality is, confident dogs don't growl.
I cannot disagree more. Alpha dogs always give a warning growl to stave off a fight, and guardian-type dogs growl to warn off threats (perceived or real) to their charges. A lot of dogs hate skateboards, though, and things that roll in general. Also he is most likely trying out guarding behavior, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but you want him to guard out of confidence and protection of his pack, not fear. And again, he is a darling little bugger!
8. only 20 lbs.? collies, especially males, are usually upwards of 50 or 60! :D Try the Shetland Sheepdog? Aside from that I don't know much about the smaller breeds, sorry...
9. Keep in mind, if you go the rescue route, a 5 or 6 year old collie is going to be alot less demanding exercise-wise than a 1 or 2 year old. Unfortunately a lot of the breeds that are similar in temperament also have similar exercise needs-you might want to check out the AKC website and look at the breed descriptions under "Herding" and "Sporting" dogs. Good Luck!
10. Hi and welcome! I have had a rough Collie, and Taz, the dog in my siggie, is half Collie and half Elkhound. Yes, they are a working breed but like Labradors, if exercised sufficiently (30-45 minutes on a walk plus playtime) they are good house pets. If not, they will herd everything in sight. They do like to bark. The hair doesn't seem to bother you much, right? Temperament depends more on the individual dog than the sex of the dog. There are a lot of rescue organizations for Collies if you are looking for an older dog as well.
11. oh my good lord! you win!!!! :D
12. hee hee!!!! i used to motivate sasha by just letting her out in the yard if she did a command right, it's her favorite place to be!
13. taz steals my underwear and socks out of the laundry. i can't let people in my house after being away until i have done a panty recon mission! he also sleeps with a pair of my shoes, which is more stalker-like than gross, but... :D
14. exercise? a good retrieve? a bird to flush?
15. TOBY PICS!!!!!!! WOOO-HOOOO!!!!! :D
16. JackieMaya, your dogs are gorgeous!
17. me too! dentist-agh!
18. i love yours! i am still going with the ankle though-something aesthetic in my mind about Taz' front right paw being on my "front right paw"... i figure it's gonna hurt no matter what, so i need to suck it up! Any ideas on a good ink to use to print him? (he is gonna be so confused!) :D
19. thanks hon!
20. of course! I have lost it on occasion and yelled and gestured crazily. I have left garbage cans unlocked. I have left CRATES unlocked (agh-too messy to even talk about!!! :D ) I learn every time. You gotta remember that the dogs forgive us every time-we can do the same.
21. omg! Sasha had to have one after she got spayed. Imagine, if you will, a sixty-pound clumsy puppy, all paws, in a two bedroom bungalow...I felt bad for her and put a t-shirt on her instead (an Al Pacino T shirt from Scarface, mind you! :D ) and she was fine.
22. ooo! k, do you have one too? :D Where are the other tattoo threads? (i am such a loser at finding that stuff...) Do you have it on the back, like your shoulder blade? Is it really hella bad? (ie, will i cry and embarass myself in front of Too Cool for School Tattoo Artist Man? )
23. I thought that would be the best place for it? I don't really know where else to put it...
24. Two of my girlfriends have decided to get tattoos. Me, I am the only punk rock girl in the world without any! I told them that I really can't think of anything that I could committ to inking on my body forever-then i told my husband this story and he goes: "Taz". Duh. So I have decided to get his paw print tattoed on my ankle, perhaps with my other pets' names as well. But I need to get a good print. Is there a good, non-toxic ink pad or roller that anyone can recommend for this? Hee-hee! I will let you know how it goes-can anyone else share the experience? (okay, i really want to know how much this is gonna hurt me... 8) )
25. All right. Sorry, I probably overreacted.
