Also, what should i do, write up a blurb on the Pyr and email it to you? do i need to cite sources or anything?

I agree that the list should be as international as possible, but I think we need to figure out who the "core audience" is, as it were. Are we looking to educate Joe Average Pet Owner, people looking for working dogs, people looking for a rare breed, dog lovers looking to expand their knowledge, all of the above? Some of these dogs just aren't pets, and if they are included that needs to be underscored and exclamation-pointed...And also, our list should be accurate and in-depth, and that may limit it to what breeds we on Dogo know intimately. Which might make a pretty interesting, if not exhaustive, list.

one thing i would like to add, some of the breeds on your original list are pretty obscure, at least in the u.s., or outside of their country of origin, and some, like the maremma, really should not be kept as a pet. should they be included? i just don't know how exhaustive this is intended to be.

i will do the pyr, of course.

Excellent! i am sure he will be ok once he is secure again, too. Also, what a doll he is!
-
Rowie, i know it's alot, but the end result is to have the most accurate info we can, and if we all answer about the breeds we have or know, the better it will be. :D
-
ooooh. Freckles, we did not mean to hurt.
-
CE, that's fine. More useless knowledge: the Maremma's full name is Maremma di Pastore d'Abruzzese".

back again! The Tatra has a long Polish name but is referred to here in the U.S. as the "Polish Tatra Sheepdog". The Akbash is actually a color variation of the Anatolian Shepherd, "Akbash" meaning white. I would not use the term "kuvasz-like". Countries of origin for the flock guardians are as follows: Pyr-France Maremma-Italy Kuvasz-Hungary Tatra-Poland Anatolian-Turkey Thanks!

mutt lady, I love "noble partner", that is perfect!

Nice. She has this position and uses it to perpetuate a breed stereotype. I don't like them.

big hugs.

nah, felicia, you can't chalk this one up to beer! :D
-
Yeah, it's a sharp, musky metallic smell. ??? Hard to describe. When you know it, you KNOW IT!!!
-
can you imagine some angry kangaroo? "I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!" ...scoops up dog and puts it in pocket...
-
here's what i love! that she chases kangaroos! :D that is surely one thing most of us could never say!

Hey Canis! No, the flock guardians do not have a mastiff ancestry. A good way to describe them, especially the Pyr, is "of moderate bone", whereas the Mastiff types are "of heavy bone". Once you put photos next to each other you will see what I mean. Flock guardians are one of the four ancient 'types" of dogs, the others are mastiff, spitz and sighthound. I think this is a brilliant idea though, and your list is pretty exhaustive. If I can answer any more questions about my beloved white bears, please let me know asap! :D

Here's the beautiful part about this dog though. He doesn't think or know himself as scaryor ugly, he knows he is loved, he is Dog. and would never stoop to judge someone as The World's Ugliest Owner. Would that we all could live like that.

This may seem like splitting hairs to you, but I just wanted to say that the Pyren ees is not a mastiff-type, the flock-guardian type is separate in and of itself. This goes for the Kuvasz, Maremma, Komondor, Tatra and Anatolian shepherd too. Just fyi.
-
good choice, sailordragon!
-
Yeah, I think that's it, the eyes. It's like that Stephen King story with all the rats?
-
:o No wait... :o :o :o Oh my. That is a little frightening. I was thinking the same thing, CoalSky, yeah, people always think Cresteds are odd... But yeah, he has a mom that loves him and that is all that matters. But if that is a "pedigreed" dog I will eat my hat.
