1. off topic...but i got the scanner to work, rowie and have posted a photo of taz in the Pictures section, as you can see it is not my strong point but you get the idea!!!
2. Hi Rowie! I am a real loser when it comes to digital stuff so the only photos I have of him are prints-BUT my husband got one of those camera phones that does everything but clean your house for you (would that they would invent THAT! :D ) so I will get some SOON! I do love showing him off, he is gorgeous. I know everyone says that about their dogs but you will not believe it when you see it-people have actually stopped their cars when we were out & asked about him. I will announce as soon as I have pics! (I am going to try the scanner here at work, too...)
3. Okay I have been doing some nosing around this morning, and I think the smartest thing for me to look into is "scootering"...have you done this, PTM? I joined the forum and asked some questions too and one guy said that he had experience with an Elkhound mix and she was a great sled dog (lighter-built than a purebred). That is a pretty serious site for people in the sport, wow! There was also a whole discussion on rollerblading and i don't think that would be wise for me, I am REALLY klutzy! :P
4. Roller blades! Brilliant! :D Thank you, I will check out that site!
5.
I don't think that is fair at all. Even dominant dog behavior towards a human baby can cause a lot of damage, whether it is motivated by aggression or pain or whatever.
6. omigod, i thought those people were crazy!!!!!! you've got the whippet people who treat their dogs like babies and"never discipline them", you've got the gay guys who think it is a fashion show, you've got the awful overbearing stage mom with the aussies, you've got the woman with the weim who "can't tell you who she would rather be with, her husband or her dog" and you've got a woman who cries over sperm. Jesus! Talk about how NOT to be a good dog owner! :o
7. Hi! I was wondering if you see many Elkhounds or Elkhound-crosses in dogsledding. (They use them in Norway as sled dogs but here in Ohio I have only seen Siberians, I thought with your experience you would know better) I was thinking this might be a nice activity for me to do with Taz-he has the most energy and stamina out of all 3 of mine and I would like a new way to exercise, both him AND me! :D . Obviously I can't have a whole sled team-is there such thing as one-dog sleds? Also, i live in northeast ohio, and the weather here is nothing if not predictable. Is this something you can do "on wheels" for the muddy months?
8. Oh man, I just read this.. paws crossed, be strong!
9. Nice. People are always yammering on about training dogs, what about TRAINING KIDS TO BEHAVE AROUND DOGS??????? ESPECIALLY LARGE STRANGE DOGS!!!!!!!!!! And I hate how the generic term "pit bull" is always thrown around in these cases. I can't imagine what you owners of bully-type breeds, and also apparently Rottweilers, have to go through with this ignorance on the part of the general public, it is bs.
10. i guess its good they watch out for us, if i had a reclining couch there's a good chance I wouldn't be getting out of it much... :D
11.   omigod! i always knew those recliners were bad! One more reason why it is good to have a dog! I like your interpretation of Taz...
12. Yeah, he can be pretty protective of me...I guess he wants me to be safe from the marauding furniture in my living room! :D
13. I have noticed lately that my male elkhound mix (Taz) has not only been following me everywhere lately but "keeping an eye" on me. Like i will be sitting there watching tv or something, he is lying on the floor across the room, and I look up, and he is watching me. This happens all the time, I look up and there he is , watching me from across the room...Is this odd? :-?
14. I agree with Courtnek as well. Mei Mei, you make an excellent point, and that is a best-case scenario which I had not thought of. Let's agree to support pzoo9 in whatever decision she makes for her family, ok?
15. you guys are hella cool. carolk9 you are NOT a bad mom! Any mom who gives out liver biscotti... :D
16. You can't rehome an aggressive dog. It is irresponsible. You either have to find a way to fix the problem, manage the problem for the rest of the dog's life, or put the dog down. Remember this is a socially interactive predatory animal. As hard as this is, our love for a dog, no matter how damaged the dog is and how much we want to save him, can NOT take precedence over the danger or liability posed to those that are most vulnerable to that very predatory instinct (mainly kids and the elderly).
17. me and sasha went for a nice long walk last night and she settled in next to me while i was doing the crossword... we are friends again! thank you for your kind words, guys.
18. thanks, i am going to go home soon and try to make friends again... michele, i am sorry too about your bf. you will get thru it.
19.
No behaviorist can say for certain, no matter how good and experienced they are, that this will never happen again.
You hit the nail on the head here, and unfortunately this is the crux of the matter. You are doing all the right things. This is your family and your pet, and ultimately, you will make the decision that is right for you. Again, good luck!
20. i have been having a horrible week, which has been compounded with my husband's long work hours, the constant rain and the full moon, and started with Sasha and Muffin (who have to be separated at all times because they hate each other) getting into a nasty squabble. The dogs have been really barky and obnoxious and not-listening-to-Mom, and I finally lost it, snapped, yelled at both Taz and Sasha, mostly Sasha (my favorite, who usually is the best-behaved). I feel absolutely awful. This is not the way to get through to any dog, much less a pyr, and I have been trying to find a way to mend our relationship. Is this normal? Help?
21. i agree with kendalyn. the most likely scenario is that your dog is feeling a little wonky and vulnerable after his surgery. However, the warning bite you described is a move used on other dogs. It seems to me like your dog sees your kid as part of his litter, equal to or lower than himself in the hierarchy. You may be able to retrain him, you may not. You may be able to train the kid, you may not. I think you should consult a behaviorist on this, preferably one that will come to your home and has experience with your breed. Barring that, I think you should re home him. Good luck. It's hard, I have been through it. We are here for you to support you! Please contact a professional as soon as you can.
22. hee hee! i am so glad i'm not the only one who does this! Sasha Bear Muffinstuff Taz, Dammit! (he is not particularly well behaved... 8) )
23. Hey, if the neighbors can't handle it, they should move! :D Anyway, it is coming up on spring, everything is thawing, God knows what good smells are in the air, she probably has sensory overload (my dogs do this too). When mine get out of hand, I bring 'em in, or take 'em for a walk to clear their head. HTH!
24. pyr puppies! ;-) But trying to NOT be biased, I would say the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, especially the ruby ones, you coud just die!
25. you did great! (sounds like this guy has more than a few issues with females of ANY species!)
