1. what the...my elkie mix has light-gold eyes for god's sake. (he's mixed with collie). what the %# is the matter with these people????? Breeders-could this woman enlist the help of another Malamute breeder to testify to the dog's heritage? From my experience, Malamutes are taller and heavier of bone with a square-type head, right? Could they put some purebred Mals and wolf hybrids side by side, maybe do some behavior testing at the hearing? Just a thought...
2. oh good! my husband thinks he is a quack :agrue: ! i am happy someone else agrees with me! i watch him almost every time he is on and every time i am around my unruly brood (a pyr and a pom who hate each other, a norwegian elkhound mix and a cat) i keep hearing cesar saying "calm assertiveness, calm assertiveness..." and it works! .
3. Has anyone seen this guy on National Geographic? He is a behaviorist and he has a show called The Dog Whisperer and he takes on these really tough cases out in California somewhere. I like him, he seems to have a real "touch" with the dogs.
4. i use the crate if someone is coming in that the big dogs don't know, not because they are mean or whatever, just to give them a chance to settle down. For the longest time I was trying to figure out how to get Sasha (our Pyr) to stop barking at the outside from in the house. I trid "That's enough" (which worked for awhile) "Settle down", "Lie down", all this fancy crap. One day, I told her "No". Lo and behold, it works like a charm! She already knows what "No" means, and now she gets one bark and comes over to me. Humans are such nonsense chitter-chatterers! :P
5. what is out of whack is people breeding poor specimens and then forcing them to fight. and last i checked, they were terriers, not wild animals, not even "like" wild animals. i have never met a mean pit bull, for what it's worth!
6. i wouldn't mess with it. please remember that the submissive dog always initiates the submissive body posture. no alpha dog would ever physically force a belly-up posture like that.
7. i wish! ;-) i would much rather be trained on the job!
8. I am thinking this might be a viable new career choice for me. here in Ohio you must be licensed and I would have to go to school, etc. Is there anyone on the boards that can tell me some experiences about the schooling and the job? Thanks!
9. in the case of the shilohs and kings, they must have an ancestry going further back than I realized-i was under the impression that they were still kind of in that "labradoodle" stage where you never know what you will get and in that case crossing pyrs and malamutes in that mix could be potentially hazardous... sorry. didn't the tibetan spaniel used to turn the prayer wheel in buddhist temples? what a great job!
10. first of all, "between the wrinkles" is a great nickname! :D people should not be throwing malamutes and pyrs in a blender with gsds. :x pyrs and malamutes are not even good dogs to own together, why would someone want to take that kind of a chance with a possible volatile mixed breed?
11. okay, well that makes sense, seijun, about the way the dogs are standing being an illusion. it's funny and kind of sick, isn't it, that on the one side you have folks breeding enormous Labs and GSDs and on the other side you have folks breeding "teacup" this and "teacup" that. I was watching a National Geographic show called "Dogs with Jobs" and they featured a real LGD Pyr. Then the narrator says "this giant breed can get up to 200 pounds". (The top end of the standard for a male is 130 lbs.) You know, if National Geographic can't even get it right... :-? The Shiloh is a nice-looking dog, I think.
12. they do look crippled, don' t they? the rhodesian ridgeback is a hunting dog but doesn't have any particular sight/scent ability. it's meant to corral and keep lions (lions!) at bay until the hunter shows up. I agree with you about the big labs. I always want to tell these people , like Jack Nicholson "YOU CAN'T HANDLE A TRUE GIANT BREED!"
13. while we are on the subject there are a few things i have always wondered. why was the slanty-back GSD developed in the first place? why do some labs have a blocky head and others have a more pointy head? why are some labs as big as my Pyr? i have heard that shiloh shepherds are a malamute/shepherd cross. is this true? why is the rhodesian ridgeback in the AKC hound group? all the things you want to know but were afraid to ask!
14. oh my god! what is wrong with that boston's eyes? And her referring to him as a "little freak" just underscores how little respect she has for the canine species as a whole. this makes me so sad for the poor dogs. i don't even think i can write how sad I am. None of them asked to be born disfigured and sick and treated like so much livestock and that poor puppy looks so sad... God! They are not toys! If Gandhi's statement is true that you can judge a society by how it treats its animals then we are in really really sorry shape.
15. oy! do i feel your pain! our pyr is white of course so in addition to the mud on the floor it seems there is half the backyard on the dog, and our elkhound mix adores the rain and likes to sit out in it. We let them in thru the back patio door which goes right into the kitchen. I put up a baby gate to block off the rest of the house before i let them in and then keep the Swiffers handy. I also sometimes keep them in there til they are reasonably dry so they don't use the couch as a towel... :) Hide and seek is a great game. My husband will tell them "Go find Mommy" and I hide behind doors and curtains and in the tub (that drives them crazy). but it seems to wear them out. Also, if it is really bad out and they want to go out and play, we just let 'em...that's what we bought the Bissell steamcleaner for! (i highly recommend that-it does tile floors as well as carpet if things get out of hand...) Also a good idea is putting white gravel by the entranceway they use-it kind of sponges off some of the mud.
16. i don't have corgis but i just wanted to say that i have two females (my pyr and my pom) who since the pyr has hit adolescence (the pom is 10) absolutely cannot stand each other and the pyr has attacked the pom twice so now they must at all times be separated. unfortunately they can't "work it out". i would advise, if you really really want 2 females, to go with a rescue who is a few years older (ie, "settled") than your original dog and has a clear, established idea of where she would like to be in the pack so you run less risk of them arguing over hierarchy. i know it is hard to predict, but if you go thru a rescue organization they should have a pretty good idea of where the dog is at. for what it's worth, both girls get along famously with our male dog.
17. we have put patio bricks at the bottom of the stairs coming up the deck and that seems to help. patio bricking anywhere they tend to run, like along the fence, helps alot, as does that white gravel you can put out for paths and stuff. aside from that, we have fallen in love with wet swiffers and the bissell steam cleaner!
18. oh what the ^$$&$#%???????? here is what makes me the maddest. do these people not realize that these pets are sentient beings, not cans of soup? :madgo:
19. oh wow! so the white ones can just pop out at any time, huh? :) i know what you mean about people thinking they are wolves-our elkhound mix is also long-legged and pointy-snouted with big prick ears and people are always wondering if he is a wolf. of course some people have also commented on sasha's resemblance to a bear, so one must consider the source! Now, with the white GSDs, can they be shown with the other GSDs? As i understand it, there are alot of coat color variations in the darker dogs but I have never seen a white one in a show (i do not have alot of experience with shows, so maybe i am just fullofit too!)
20. oooooh! he is GORGEOUS! (do alot of people think he is a wolf?) I always do a double-take if I see one, I understand they are pretty rare? i dunno what it is about the white fur, i just love it! :D
21. Pyrs of course!!!! i wish i had some photos to show you of my Sasha. I am a sucker for white dogs-aside from the Pyr, the Kuvasz, Maremma, Samoyed, American Eskimo, and white GSDs get me every time!
22. i hope you guys are still here...the behaviorist i had spoke to earlier about this situation emailed me today and she said that Sasha is not bonded to me, she is possessive of me and is acting "responsible for you and not responsible to you". I don't know what that means. it kind of hurt my feelings. this dog laid next to me the whole six weeks i recovered from surgery (early fall) and the first couple days when I was home she literally walked next to my knee and let me hold onto her collar 'cause i was really unsteady on my feet and it hurt to walk. am i a crazy dog-lady to think my dog loves me? I know she was being possesive the day in question but that doesn't mean she is not bonded to me, right?
23. good lord! i thought my neighbors were bad! :o I would also be happy to lend my Pyr to drool on her side of the fence...Ah, let 'er call. Any "dog police" worth their salt will LAFF and LAFF!
24. here i am again i must really be on a roll! okay, i am not sure how to put this delicately...what do you do when the other human member of your pack does not "remember" the new "dog rules" all the time (see my prior post called "need some insight" on what is happening with our girls) and doesn't enforce them? and thinks that a behaviourist is a waste of time and money because "we can do this ourselves"? i mean he (my husband) is pretty good most of the time about the "rules" but I feel that with the immense size difference between our pom and our pyr and their history, that there is no excuse to not be as vigilant as possible all the time. I would like to have a behaviorist come in, just once, to assess the situation and he thinks that is a dumb idea. i am kind of just venting here, too, but have any of you been faced with similar situations?
25. hi matty! i agree with you completely, and actually having them separated has eased alot of the tension in the house and I know they can feel that. Muffin doesn't get the bed anymore, their crates are in separate rooms & that's where they eat, and we havent' given them anything to "guard" either, Basically trying to remove all of the stimulus that would start a fight. I am glad to hear that your boys worked it out! I am sure that Sasha and Muffin will learn to live together. I wish Muffin was bigger so they could just suss it out amongst themselves, but in the absence of that, it's more of an adjustment for me not having all three in the same room!
