I was not going to respond, but I will --- only to suggest that you do a bit more research. here are some web sites to begin. I will also tell you that I live in a not so great neighborhood of Baltimore city and I see some very mean dogs every day .... pits, rotties, boxers, labs, cocker spaniels ..... yes, there are a lot of pit bulls, and I do stay away from ALL strange dogs. I have a 6 month old puppy ... a mutt .... 2 of his best friends are pits - the sweetest dogs I've ever met. The worst experience I ever had with a dog was with a jack russell. I was walking my pup - on lead - and the woman who owned the jack - who was on a really long lead -- let her dog run right up to mine and the little thing took a chunk out of my oscar's nose! oscar didn't even have a chance to get defensive -- he loves everyone! but the grip of that jack was incredible. we had to pry him off oscar's face where he had grabbed hold. now, we think oscar's part pit, but he never went for the jack -- even as I pried the little dog off his face. sorry it's such a long story. that's all I'll say.

Oscar did that at first. I let him sniff at the brush for a while before I start to use it every time. and i started with very short sessions -- now he'll hang out pretty much as long as i like. it helps to put treats on your head too. I taught him to 'stand' -- that was the purpose of the treats. he could see them, i could work --- he stood as long as it took

thanks !! that'll get me started .... on to amazon.com ...... :D

I'm looking for a few good - fairly basic -- books on canine behavior and/or training. any suggestions?

oh, poor girl. good that it wasn't too bad, though. i hope she heals fast and those GSD owners keep him under control!
-
that was me ... sorry ....
-
Thanks! The oil worked beautifully and oscar was very good while I cleaned him up.

we just got back from a lovely walk in the park and Oscar has chewing gum stuck on one paw. It's all wedged up between the pads and everything. :o Any suggestions for getting it out? Thanks!! :D

Hope you all fared all right Goo ... It really wasn't so bad here -- I'm back in the office and all. Oscar was a nightmare, though. Trying to get him out the door last night took both of us. one pushing and one pulling. and then i had to take him so he couldn't see the front door .... but the inner harbor and most of another couple of neighborhoods are all under water and it's supposed to get worse before it gets better. Of course, my BF works in the harbor, so he's not going to work till the waters go down .... no fair!
-
oscar is my little watch puppy -- he has no fear. whenever something makes noise outside his hair goes up and he barks. when someone comes to the door he's right there barking up a storm. it was really cute, but now i'm trying to break him of it a little.

we're all ready here --- and my next door neighbors -- a lovely couple with a 9 year old boxer who oscar idolizes ---- just called me here at the office and invited us over for a hurricane party tonight! yea!!!! :drinking:
-
Oh yes -- here in baltimore there has been a run on batteries and bottled water. we're ready .... probably won't be AS bad up here, but you never know ..... brought everything up from the basement last night because we always get water. should be fun -- oscar really hates to 'go' outside in the rain .... good luck to all.

I guess Oscar is most like a boxer .... I think ..... or RR .... but I'll say boxer, since I'm not allowed to say 'ghetto mutt' -- which is the truth .... Rottweilers : 3 Doberman Pinscher : 2 Shetland Sheepdog : 1 German Shepherd : 3 Keeshonden :3 Shiloh Shepherd : 1 Boxer : 2 Kelpie : 1 Labrador : 6 Mini Poodle : 3 Papillon : 1 Foxhound : 1 Standard Poodle : 2 Toy Poodle : 1 Lhasa Apso : 2 Mini Schnauzer : 1 Chihuahua : 1 Pit Bull : 1 1/2 Malamute : 2 Border Collie: 5 Maltese : 1 "Heeler"(Blue and Red) : 4 Samoyed : 1 Saint Bernard : 2 Staffordshire Bull Terrier : 2 British Bulldog : 2 American Eskimo : 1 Jack Russell Terrier : 5 Golden Retriever : 1

thanks! I was up to about half and half, but this morning I went bach to 75% old food. and I just went home for lunch and he went and it was normal! a little soft, but good. I'll just move a little slower. thanks!
-
Ok. so I'm in the process of changing Oscar's food and he had diarhea all day yesterday. Is this fairly normal or should I be worried?
-
yea, we're all watching the weather channel ... good luck. and to you gooey ... hopefully it'll miss us and we'll just have a little rain!
-
I'm so sorry. If there's anything I can do .... Hoping & praying she's found safe ....

I'm intoo, guys. We live in Baltimore city and I got the batteries and water and candles and stuff this morning. I'm going to try and stick through, but god knows how it'll go .... I sat through Floyd in coastal VA, but that wasn't so bad. you leaving town, sheltie?

my neighborhood is ... well .... interesting? diverse is not the right word -- a bit dangerous? anyway, we aren't far from the pasrts of the city where you do see the poor pups that are fought. and occasionally, i have run into a pit or two on the street and I really thought it would break it's lead and just maul poor oscar. and me! that being said -- two of oscar's best friends are pits and I adore them. The worst experience I've had on the street has been with a boxer being walked by a very respectable - looking man in a suit. so honestly, I am skeptical of all dogs unless I can hang out and watch them - and their owner for a minute or two. cause if I like them maybe I can pet them and I love dogs. really.

I can't believe how much bigger they get!

when I brought Oscar home this past April, he was just 6 pounds -- a tiny bit longer than my shoe. Last week he was 43 pounds -- he's about 6 months old now. and still so cute. -
I know a lot of you all have both dogs and cats in your homes and I'm looking for some advice. My puppy, Oscar, is about 6 months old - male - and has never met a cat. My other half has had cats before, but not with dogs. He has decided he wants to get a cat -- and I've never had a cat of my own, but I think I'd love to have one! So I'm looking for advice ... how old should the cat be? .... is it better to get a female cat? is this really a bad idea? I think I'm a little nervous ... I've introduced 2 dogs, but that's about it. and they loved each other immediately .... Thanks! :D

oscar hates the rain. i mean really HATES the rain. I have to drag him outside and stand there till he 'does' or he just won't -- he'll go inside and wait till i turn my back .... sneaky puppy. but, i must say, i gave him a bath last night and he only tried to jump out once ... making progress there, i guess ....
-
i'm in the process of switching oscar to the blue puppy food. he also gets yogurt and an egg a couple of times a week. for treats he gets carrotts and some chopped meat and basic biscuits.

i pick it up each and every time .... i live in the city and it's those folks who leave it that give all of us a bad name and cause more and more restrictions. it's just too many dogs and people to ever leave it! i actually feel very strongly and always carry extra bags so that when i see someone walking away from their dog's poo I can offer it to them .... is that rude? i used to feel presumptuous, but it's rude to leave poop on the ground!
-
i agree .... my mom always said -- "there are two kinds of people in the world .... dog people and the rest ..."
