My rottie Max was cremated and his ashes are sealed in a decorative wooden box that I have in my living room. Maybe I will eventually scatter his ashes out in our woods in a special clearing we have, but I'm not ready yet... :(

Oh...what a fun day you all had! :D What a great couple of girls you have.

Hello Daisymom & Lucky Chaos! It's been an interesting day. Courtnek - I took a look at her ear and it doesn't look infected, and she seemed more lively than yesterday. In fact she's been a lot more lively today. She definately does not like male dogs (even neutered male dogs). With a few feedings in her and a good day outside in the sunny fenced yard and deck she was feeling better. Just now I've come in from outside. We had Ben and Jerry outside and they were playing with the husky mix in the larger unfenced portion of our yard. We had them both in and out of the fence today and they stuck like glue. The hound didn't want to come out, but while they were playing I heard a bay of complaint from inside the house. I could see her through the kitchen window because there is a bench the boys put their front feet on to see out. So I let her out. The minute she was out the door her nose went up in the air and she circled round to her companion collected her up and trotted off purposefully due east! No amount of calling brought them back. We hung around the yard feeling at a loss. Then I went inside and my husband went out to his "shop". He said they stopped by to say hello one final time, and then were gone again in a flash. So....who knows if they will be back. :o I guess having more than two dogs is now a moot point! We've been talking about why they showed up, stayed for two days and one night and then took off. It makes me wonder if they live somewhere relatively close and wander off to find a handout meal or two when they don't get fed. We will never know. No way to keep up with them in our dense woods. It's a mystery. :( Thanks to all who took an interest is our temporary house guests! I just hope they remain ok....

Sorry to hear Ruby has got a bad cough! I hope she makes a speedy recovery! Poor thing..... :(

Awww...Thanks for your warm reception everyone! :great: Two piles and one puddle later we have all made it through the night! Why is it that dogs feel compelled to have their "accidents" on carpet instead of nice, smooth, cleanable tile? Oh well, it's cleaned up - thanks to all the wonderful new products on the market. :o Now....how to handle breakfast once everyone is awake..... I'm getting a taste of multiple dog life; pre-planning seems to be the key! It's good to be back here with you all. :D Edited to add: We think the hound mix is probably sick. This looks more and more like a "let's take our dogs out to the country and dump them" situation. This morning we were able to check her out thoroughly while she was sleeping. Her pads are HOT! Dang.... Mark is going to take Monday morning off and see what can be done. :( P.S. Her appetite is good, perhaps she's not too sick yet. Just had a good breakfast and looking for more.

Hi, Horsefeathers! Yes, I know for sure what you would do!  They are cute...However they seem a trifle small.... Hmmm....theoretically, they both together wouldn't equal one big dog would they? 8)

Thanks for the welcome back, Courtnek! Good suggestion about the police. Since we are out in the country I guess I will have to call several area police departments.... The hound mix is feeling a bit out of sorts right now. She is on a spare dog bed I pulled out of the closet. For some reason she is not happy about Ben in the past 30 minutes or so. He is peeking in from the dining room and she is expressing her displeasure. Hmmm.....She almost bayed once. I am hoping it is just because she is hurting and not because she has dominance issues. Last night we heard a ruckus from a few houses down the road by a small lake. I'm wondering now if it was this pair. She has a small tear in her ear and a couple of tiny divots in her forhead as if from teeth. If she did have a fight with another dog it sure would explain her symptoms. Thanks for the advice. :D .....and the welcome!

Hi everyone! :hand: I've been swamped with my job this year plus being on two very active committees for school so I've been lurking when I have the quick moment or two but not posting...sadly. Anyhoo.....The reason for my post today is the arrival this morning of two lovely little stray dogs here on our property. We let Ben and Jerry out into their new fenced yard off the deck as usual early this morning after their breakfast (yes!! finally we have a fence...). Suddenly we heard much excited barking so knew something unusual was up. A quick look out the dining room window showed them with their noses pressed against the chain link toward the back yard. My husband popped out the back door and there they were.....two young females. Both rather small (according to our criteria   ). One is black and gray with "husky" like markings and the other white with butterscotch patches and freckles - and a hound look about her. Neither of them could be more than 35 pounds. My husband reported what was there, so while I took a shower he fed them. Their ribs showed and the hound moved slowly and stiffly as if she was injured. After they ate they wandered off towards our woods, so we thought they were moving on. So we went to the grocery store in the next town, arriving back two hours later to find them both sleeping in the flower bed! Okay, so now what to do? Our county humane society was closed and wouldn't reopen until Monday. The "hound" mix was obviously uncomfortable and wanted in the worst way to get in the house. She let me run my hands over her without complaint and didn't make a sound. The other little girl was bouncing around, excited we were back. So....after some discussion, we decided that they would have to come in the fence and we could keep the boys inside the house and potty them out back like we used to....watching all the time! So, we did that.... once! The girls were both so little they just slithered under the gap in the drive through gate! Our boys being so big, we never expected that. So they met! Jerry got a little nip on the nose for his rude nosiness, but it taught him to back off! Meanwhile the little husky mix was hopping around like popcorn popping. Eventually everyone settled down. I caved....as I type this we are all in the house. The girls are snoozing in the living room laid flat out on the rug with Jerry snoring only 6 feet away. Everyone has had their supper and been out for their constitutional. I will have the weekend to figure out what to do; I know I will have to at least call the humane society to ask if anyone has reported a lost dog or two. The hound mix is uncollared and the husky has a red woven collar that looks old. We've been outside several times with everyone and the girls follow us around closely as if they are afraid we will disappear. My husband said, "Aren't dogs amazing? What other animal would accept us and each other so quickly in the space of an hour after meeting?" I have to agree! :D It will be interesting to see what tomorrow brings....

Happy Birthday to you, Coal! :new-bday: :tort:

Cassie - I do think that an angel sent him your way. What a lucky fellow he is to have crossed paths with you. I am happy to hear he is settling in and that you have high hopes of keeping him.

Sorry I've been gone so long. Here's an update on Ben & Jerry. They are getting along fabulously, even sleeping next to each other from time to time. Jerry is a real attention hog and does try to insert himself between Ben and whoever is petting Ben at the time. Ben gets his own back by jumping up on the couch before Jerry can at times. They are too funny. Jerry is a real toy maven. He is spoiled beyond belief. We took him to the Humane Society from which he was adopted. They were happy to see him, but said..."I don't remember him being that sturdy looking!" Yes, Jerry is eating too much and now that winter has hit is not getting enough exercise. I will have to fix this, although I'm quite sure Jerry is more than happy with his current state. Ben had a fatty tumor removed from his chest. Thank goodness that's all it was. I guess they had quite a time getting the initial shot in him for sedation. He's not grouchy, he just walks away. At any rate, his incision is healed and now the hair is beginning to grow back. All is well in his neck of the woods. Miss Ashley, our gray long-haired cat is doing great. But....Poor Miss Paisley, my grouchy tortie girl, had been very ill. Just this past Friday I had to have her put to sleep. I bawled the whole time, held her as she passed over to the bridge, and took her home for burial. She was my best girl. I loved her like I loved poor Max. Two best friends in one year...now gone. I just have to vent about another cat owner who was at the counter next to me at the Emergency Vets (my country vet was on farm calls and not available). She brought in a lovely orange tomcat in a cramped, metal cage. About the size of a hamster cage. A dirty green towel was over it as she forked over her $60 to have him put to sleep. The vet tech asked her if she just wanted the vet to take a look at the sore on his side and to give him more medicine....but the girl coarsly replied....Nah! We are tired of him getting out of the house and getting in catfights! I wanted to kick her right in her sorry butt! And then she said....You can take care of his body too. It was all the vet tech could do to be civil. Then this excuse for a woman turned and left the clinic. My God! People can be so awful. The exam room where we waited had a window that looked out into the central glassed in portion of the clinic. I could see the tomcat being put to sleep. I was impressed with the loving care he received. The staff cared for him as if he were their own, holding him, petting him, until the end. There are angels out there. Thank you to all vet techs everywhere who are so compassionate! Miss Paisley's end was as calm as could be. She went peacefully, her suffering over. I hope she is wreaking havoc on Max up at the Bridge. Go get 'em, Paisley! (said through tears)

some people....this makes me very angry...
behle replied to courtnek's topic in Everything about dogs
She's a fool. I agree that they should have tranquilized the wolf and let her suffer for a half hour or so while it took effect. As far as her family going after money from the zoo is concerned....I only wish I were the judge in the case. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree....they sound like a sorry lot as well! Whatever happened to PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ONE'S ACTIONS? -
People can be vile..... This post reminds me of an incident that took place in the town I work in. A garbage truck pulled up to a house where a man was calmly smoking a cigarette watching the truck arrive. The workers got out, emptied the can into the truck and pulled the lever to compact the trash. As they pulled the lever they thought they heard faint meowing....so they tried to reverse the compacter. But no luck. The man then turned and went into his house. When it finished cycling the guys reversed it and searched through the trash and found a whole litter of little kittens had been crushed to death in the compacter. They were horrified and called the police. The guy was picked up and charged with animal cruelty and spent some time in jail and had to pay a large fine. In my mind that's not enough punishment for him.... I'm with you guys! I believe they should really pay for their abuse. I can't believe the utter cruelty of some people.

Zebra is in good hands! Best wishes for his speedy recovery....and HURRY UP SATURDAY! :D

Welcome home Devin!!! (He's such a cutie!)

I am so sorry to hear that your sweet Gracie is being taken from you so soon by this insidious disease. It makes my heart break for you. I lost my rottie Max this past summer to this same cancer. Cherish your final days with her and help her move on to the Bridge when it is time. You will remember all the wonderful times she gave you. I will keep you and Gracie in my thoughts.. :(

Sickening story. Those men are without morals...looks like they're skimming money & drugs off the top as well as treating animals with utmost cruelty. I hope they get found out, prosecuted, and incarcerated. I can't print what I really think ought to happen to such rotten, controlling, sadistic, chauvanistic relics! :x

She is growing quickly! I love her expression and those wonderful ears! She is a doll. :D

Good luck with the surgical consult! I am hoping everything gets explained to your satisfaction and that you feel comfortable with the procedure after you meet with the surgeon. We will be thinking of you Sunday! :D

What an excellent outcome! I am so relieved your worry was for nothing! :D

Hmm.... She looks so innocent! Poor thing. It's too bad that fireworks are such a big deal on a night like tonight. My hubby had a dog who used to literally froth at the mouth from barking at fireworks.... Hated them with a passion! Sorry your door is all mangled.... :o Not a good way to begin some quiet time (hopefully) at home!
