    Breeders Ethics

I am not generalizing either...I have found the same thing to be true..for some reason, gay men and women, just seem to be more serious about dog ownership......they seem to have no problems with s/n, are more often receptive to contracts, etc...have no idea why? but they have been some of the best homes.
  2. Some times it can be hard, breeding for just working lines...and some working dog breeders feel that it doesn't matter one bit what the dog looks like and if it can work, then its obviously healthy...just as some show people think that all it has to do is be able to win...sad really...has made a big split in many breeds.. Sigh.

    Breeders Ethics

Well I am commonly called "the nazi" by people looking for a dog... ;) I do eye tests, heart, and patella on my chins. These tests were just adopted by our parent club but there are no requirements or requests to do them...most people in our breed don't...its just an option. Also breathing problems, epilepsy...that sort of thing, we check for and won't breed. Our pet puppies are fixed before they leave (ooooh wanna hear ppl call you some ugly names, do that) they are microchipped and the chip remains registered to me. We have a care policy and return agreement, breaking that, they agree to pay $1000 for each infraction to the parent club for rescue... hmmm...I won't place a dog with some one for various reasons...and my mother thinks that all men who want one must be gay, or they won't take care of the dog properly  ;) Talk baby talk to them...etc... ;) Hmmmm.... When I breed I usually keep all but one in the litter...although this last litter I had 6...never had that many..three has been my top... so I am keeping two... probably take me a year to place them.. ;) but oh well... Other genetic tests for people are marfism, phenelukadystrophy, kleinfelters, and a couple of others... Some states require testing for Taysachs.
  4. Yeah..I really didn't mean it bully...for some reason I had bully on the brain....I was not thinking about YOU when I said it...I was too poofed to think strait.. :) :) so please don't be upset.,. :) take care :) Hey I bet I can use my name...like the smurfs used theirs... ;) Well poof you...and poof this, and yeah poof poof and poof again.. ;D
  5. There have been studies conducted in examining a possible link between thyroid disease and aggression. I would have a full scale thyroid panel done, then contact a behavorist through a veterinary university. You have to understand, that you just can't "get rid" of her. There is no where she could go and not be a danger to some one and a financial and legal risk to you. You will have to undertake the responsibility of euthinizing her. I hope tho, in all my heart it does not come to that...and that you will be able to find help from some one specializing in canine behavior. Good luck...and i will send positive thoughts your way.
  6. Aw who cares...I just think the words... "flaming Poofy" are too funny... Since I "flamed" and was "flamed" maybe I should change my name...become a rock star... HAHAHAH Now playing at an ampatheater near you "Flaming Poofy".... hmmm...is it just me...or can that sound sorta phalic if you say it right? ;)

can you suspend some one for acting badly? At least temporarily?
  8. yeah, but if they presented to the public, the BILLIONS in tax dollars that it is gonna cost for those regulations...they would probably change their tune...mighty quick...

Rather then deleting the posts...why not just *ignore* them. Maybe they will go away when no one listens to what they say...
  10. Sorry Bully I mean BriBob or what ever.. my appologies. ;)
  11. You said: "It;s the small scale breeder who NEEDS to be regualated. The one that gets his pet from a commercial establishment that doesn't care what the person does with the dog. This person breeds thier pet with no knowledge no experience, no health testing, no knowledge of the health problems in the pedigree, does no screening of buyers, puts an ad in the newspaper and sell to whomever comes. No health warranty, no take back clause, no spay and neuter." Firstly, we have to look at things, as in the eyes of our culture. I agree that all breeders, should be regulated. If only certain people should breed and certian dogs should be bred? Who is going to make those choices? And realistically, would you really want some one making those choices for you? You can't just have "good breeders should", if you want it done, then the regulation should effect everyone not just a chosen few. And then again....if only certain people should own dogs...then who will decided that? And when dealing with health warranties....what do you do, if the health of the dog, is affected by how a person keeps their dog? If it breaks, you must buy it back, attitude...can get you in trouble. Many breeders don't offer a health guarantee in writing, because they have been burned so many times. And once again...who will decide what your guarantee should cover. Open all these doors brings to light a greater issue. If dogs/cats are elevated to that level, then are they "animals" any more...and what other "rights" are they entitled too. At this point your role your eyes and say....thats not what I mean, or thats not what will happen, or even, don't be ridiculous....but I am telling you...that the courts will see differently when you start making arguments such as the above. And who will pay for the regulation? Inspectors would have to be hired, fines would be set. And how would they really investigate any one...short of gestapo tactics. See...its not as easy as one two three.... I wish it were.... I feel the irresponsible breeders have ruined it for the rest of us. I don't know why you feel they have ruined it for you...I don't buy their dogs. Yes there are people who have done some stupid things, that have brough about the issue for certian legislation...but that should not be ruining it for the rest of the people out there. What we need to do...is all get together, and get a better plan, then to just "make more laws"...they don't have the man power to enforce the laws that we do have...why make more?

I too agree...but this is not going to be a passing phenomenon...since acme is gone...I think that there will be many, who will try to set their claws into this board and try and control things like they did there...
  13. I am sitting on the edge of the razor on this topic. I think that they need rules, but the rules they have stink. Firstly, the USDA as well as local agriculture officials, already have more work then they can handle. They are so over worked that they can only "catch" the bad guys when they are liscensed...well...what if they don't get liscensed...they don't have the time or money to persue them...especially if they are breeding on a small scale. This is where I think that AKC should pick up the slack...they need to be willing to provide inspectors (CFA and TICA do it), for areas that have laws and need help inforcing them. I also think that the breed clubs and AKC ought to RE-WRITE the dog breeding rules, as it would apply to a breeder. Some of the requirements, right now, with my own state, make it very difficult to house dogs like I think they should be housed. The laws in my state are pretty lax too, compared to some...I dread what they might bring in if DDAL gets its way... Its all a bunch of bureaucracy. If those who were members of the national breed club, could be inspected by inspectors for the club, and be exempt from inspection from the state...I think that would help...but then we would be getting into another area, of possible polical agenda huh????
  14. Alright.... I think the REAL idea is being lost here. SandyB, bully, who ever else who has elected themselves sheriff.... The point is, the person you dislike, whoever it may be, has as much right to be here as you do. You, jumping on them, harping at every turn, etc..etc... is an attempt to run that person off and claim ground...I don't give a rats butt as to why, who, how many, it all boils down to, "You don't belong here". Get the stick out of your butt and quit acting like an over sexed pomeranian bent on humping every wolly toy in the house to prove a point!!! The tactic was old thirty seconds after you first did it...and its only getting more rancid. If you want to act that way, then start up your own board and leave this one, and others, alone...for pete sakes!!!! Gone to take some asprin.
  15. When you deal with pituitary dwarfism (somethig that is often seen in the GSD and results in a dog that can be the size of a Chi or in the Kalean Bear Dog) it does not mean the dogs have shortened limbs. My point in saying, its dwarfism...is that dwarfism (depending on the breed) is considered a genetic disease....if that ideal was realized by the public...would they be willing to pay, thousands, for a dog with a "genetic disease"... ;) see what I mean? :D

    Genetic cont...

i will gladly share what I know...and if I don't know the answer I will try to find the answer. If some one wants to learn, that is my job as a breeder to teach them, share what information I know. I could not be a responsible breeder if I didn't. I don't descriminate...if they want to learn then OBVIOUSLY they care....
  17. Inbreeding nothing, more like just BAD breeding. Broken down pasterns are a comformational fault that can be found in the most out crossed pedigrees. Also, chrondrodysplasia can result in those type of atributes. Inbred or out crossed, what you breed is what you get.
  18. They would have to pay me thousands to take one.. ;) hehehehehe
  19. if you know when the b*tch was bred, you can expect puppies in about 65 days from the first breeding. About 10 days, before her due date, begin taking her temperature. When her temp drops to 99, and stays down for more then 12 hours, expect the puppies to be born within the next day. She is a small dog if she is an RT. You might have to be ready for a c-section. If the mismate occured with another rat terrier, a c-section will be unlikely, but if it was another breed, the puppies have a higher chance of being very large. When she begins labor, watch for her water to break. If the first puppy is not born, within 2 hours of her water breaking, I would take her to the vet. Also, watch for sign of squatting, like she is trying to pee, during labor. This can also be a sign of not being able to push the babies out. After the babies are born, make sure you get an oxytocin(sp?) shot to help contract her uterus and clean her out to prevent infection. Ideally, if she is not a brood bitch, and you are not showing her, and she is just a pet, it would be better to simply spay her now and abort the puppies to keep from producing unwanted puppies and risking her life. Also, since this was a mis-mate...have you had the dog who mis-mated her and her, tested for brucellosis? This is a bacterial infection that is passed on through breeding or exchange of body fluids. It is potentially contagious to humans as well and by handeling new born puppies, after birth, etc. you could potentially expose yourself to it.
  20. In my area to debark a dog it will cost you about thirty to fourty dollars and that included the antibiotic they put the dog on afterwards.
  21. Well---- you know what they call it when you get those little "minni" dogs? its called dwarfism...pituitary or chrondrodysplasia....either way...its still a dwarf.. ;) Ah well.... I sure hope their price is microscopic too :)
  22. A friend of mine is aquantances with the woman who has had the top sheltie bitch (she was the top at least last year)...any how..that little sable, I do believe, is all brown, exctept for her tail tip I think... I know she has been reffered to as a plain brown paper bag...i won't swear to it...but i don't think she has hardly any white, if any on her...
  23. Yes, shelties can come without white collars or chests...although it would be unusual...but not impossible.

    Test Breedings

Newfie mom... I gave you reasons for a test breeding. If want examples of scenerios you can read Hobbits or when I finish mine you can read it. Hobbit: I have seen Border collies come in merle, as well as sable... Still they go back to similar origins of the sheltie don't they? I know the irish shelties sure do look like a border collie.

    Test Breedings

On your BC delima... Its pretty common for collie type breeds (oddly those that carry the merle gene)...to have reaction to heart wormer and other womer chemicals, particularly ivermectine. It has something to do with a low blood brain barrier. i would have to look up my notes on it if you want more info.. Also, I do know about the " I have an eye" mentality...unfortunately your eye isn't the thing needed to figure out the risk factors...those with that attitude tend to be missing that vital organ... ;) P.s. Having been a smart a** and made that statement...I will add this...I have met a couple of people who were sevants when it came to pedigrees...they just some how *knew* what would happen.... but those types are a needle in a hay stack.
