Newest pic makes me think Dane/Lab.
-
I think he's too big and leggy for a Am Staff/Lab and 95lb is really big too. Good possibility of Dane or even the Mastiff that the prev. owner suggested.

Narrowed it down to 2 breeders - your oppinions please?

I'm no expert but I like the boxberry head, it seems to have the boxer features a little more emphasized. I also like the boxberrys because they have imo a nice strong looking chest and their backends are not overdevelped but not weak looking or overly slopey. -
Welcome to Dogo Oinkrider!

Boxberry? I think, but just for personal aesthetic reasons. -
My Zaphod still chases his tail and he is around 2. I think he does it when he is feeling goofy, he acts goofy for us alot. He catches it occasionally. Is your dog itchy in other areas?

If your vet will do phone consults that would be great - they have seen puppies and dogs eat all kinds of things so they may have run across this one before. Socks apparently can be an issue. If you are going to wait and see just keep a very close eye on him and watch everything coming in and going out. I would also greatly restrict intake until you see that dryer sheet again but that is just my inexpert best guess.

I would suggest a product like rescue remedy to calm her in the beginning phase of desensitisation as she seems quite easily distressed. Start very slow but have a very upbeat attitude yourself. Good luck.

I would do regular yard-checks Courtnek. Drug dealers aren't the nicest of neighbours and if they decide that your dogs are an inconvenience throwing poisoned bait into your yard wouldn't be an unheard of tactic. Especially since they may already have been busted because of having to change their running plans because of your dog.

Okay if his birthday was in October, my guess is you will be looking at the upper range of the weight I guessed, maybe a bit higher.
-
A hairless dog who showers daily - now there would be a dog with LOW doggie smell.

"Designer" sled dogs sound odd. I'm sure, as in many breeds, there is a large difference between working sled dogs of all types and show versions of the breed.

Dogs stop growing at various ages often dependent on breed. Smaller dogs usually stop gaining height before larger dogs. After the dog cans it final height it will still likely need to "fill out." Is 6-10-04 June 10th or Oct 6th? I'm hoping June 10th because 8lbs might be a bit large for a 6 week old of the cross you mention. Rat Terrier Males (assuming standerd sized) - 12-35lbs Pug Males - 14-18lbs Chihuahua Males - 6lbs So in theory you could have a dog anywhere from 6 to 35lbs. However, I suspect you'll get something in the 12 to 20 lb range, just a guess though.

Maybe you are thinking of the now popular oversized version of a Malamute. One of my profs bred, showed and competed in sledding events with his Mals - in cottage country no less, not a paticularly cold winter. They did fine, even won once in a while. They did races more suited to their breed of course. He also used them for camp/sledding and took them out on canoe trips in the summer - they ran along the shore keeping up to the canoes all day. His dogs were average or slightly under standerd Mal size, but not much. He had one giant in one litter and refused to include him in his breeding program or sledding. Lancaster was such a cutie though, big hairy beast that used to love nothing more than leaning against you until you buckled and fell down for snuggles. http://www.alaskanmalamute.org/intro.htm , http://www.alaskanmalamute.org/workgam.htm has some good info on Mal sled dogs and freight sledding. Here is something from their site that is applicable.
The Standard of the Breed calls for a
Alaskan Malamutes are useless as sled dogs
Malamutes are good for long distance and/or freight hauling. The don't go fast but they can haul a mean load and go all day. The just don't race well.
-
Well they are big and strong, maybe they wouldn't do as well in extreme cold weather but I bet they could do a decent job of freight pulling. The team looks very impressive in their harnesses. Here is a link to an all Border Collie team: http://www.dogscouts.com/sled.shtml

I'm so glad he is ok. I was not thinking good things when I read the topic, my high school Physical Geography teacher had his Dobie fall off the Niagra Excarpment, cost him almost $4000 to save the dog but thankfully he could - I was really surprised that the dog survived at all and so pleased that he was willing to try to save it. Needless to say when we went on a feild trip to the Escarpment he was not too keen on us getting close to the edge. Its a very good thing he waited for you, congrats on your training.

Thanks Mei Mei, Nea and Shattering Glass. I appreciate your feedback. Anyone who has time is welcome as well. We have a bit of a problem with dog owners in my neighbourhood so I may be working with one of the animal groups in the city to make flyers about not chaining your dog, not leaving them in the yard all the time, excercise, training etc and we might if we are very lucky be able to do a proactive educational thing regarding choosing the right breed for your lifestyle etc.

I was hoping a couple knowledgable dog folks would do some of the breed selectors and tell me if they think they work. I like doing them but some seem better than others. If anyone has time, try one of the ones below and let me know what you think. I like the ones that ask about excercise, activity level, suitability with children/dogs/strangers and make some attempt to match using more than dog size, yard size and have you ever had a dog before. http://selectsmart.com/beta_dog/ http://animal.discovery.com/guides/dogs/selector/selector1.jsp http://www.ivillage.com/pets/tools/breedselector/questions/dog/size?arrivalSA=1&cobrandRef=0&arrival_freqCap=1&pba=adid=12304533 please forgive the blatent pet food pitch in that one http://www.showdog.com/Breeds/breedselector.asp http://www.eukanuba.com/en_US/jhtmls/breed_selector/sw_BreedSelector_page.jhtml?li=en_US&bc=E&pti=BS&sc=&lsc=&bsc= Does anyone have any other selectors that they like and think work well.

I don't threaten the dogs much at all but my cat, her I threatened for years. I love her dearly even more so because she is so saucy and feisty but she is a bit of a regal snot and only snuggles for about 10 min a day, other than that she could care less if I'm around. I threatened her for snubbing me for 7 years: "I'll get a dog." As you've probably surmised the threat didn't work but it all worked out in the end.
-
Well my dogs think I am slow and clumsy (compared to them of course,) they also suspect I may be somewhat lame as I can't seem to throw a toy dropped on the ground - it has to be dropped in my lap or hand. Zaphod at least seems to keep an eye on me more if we travel over uncertain terrain etc. Maybe Web has similar concerns about you? :D
-
Its so interesting how they pick up the traits of the cats isn't it. :D
-
My dogs were raised with cats so they see nothing wrong with perching on the back of the chair or walking across the back of the couch or jumping up to semi-perch at least in part on a sitting persons shoulder. Its not so bad with Kavik - 40lbs but with Zaphod - 60 lbs it can get dicey.
