1. Well maybe she just searched for poos for u and caught the thread and thought she'd add her experience. Poos for U does sorta suck, I wouldn't be surprised if they start popping up periodically like wizard of claws did.
2. You can probably find a terrific mix at www.petfinder.org. They often tell you lots about the temperment of the dog being adopted out so that will help with kids. You of course can't look at every dog on petfinder - there are 10s of thousands of them - so you can search by area and size of dog. Or you could search by area and breed (sometimes there are purebreds but often a dog will be listed by the dominant breed or guessed breed in the mix.) If you are keen on rough collies you could check them out and their mixes out and see if one has a temperment to suit you. A 20 lb dog might be a bit small to play with a child but of course there are exceptions. Other breeds/mixes you might look at are: Border Terrier Wheaton Terrier Australian Shepherd * Springer Spaniel * Feild Spaniel * English Setter * Flat-Coated Retriever*@ American Cocker Spaniel English Cocker Spaniel Shetland Sheepdog And I do think a Smooth Collie* could work if you have done your research (and it sounds like you are doing it) and are prepared for their excercise needs. They are great with kids in my experience its just they do need that excercise and are smart too so they need something to do with that smarts are they get bored - bored dogs cause problems. *These dogs are going to have a bit higher excercise needs than the other dogs on the list but so long as you are prepared for this it shouldn't be a problem. @This dog looks a bit like a more slightly built Lab/Golden cross so if your SO isn't interested in Labs he might not like this one on the basis of looks but they are good dogs. Going to a dog show is great, especially if you get a chance to talk to folks about the breed/breeds you are interested in. Hope it all goes well and that when you get your new dog you post pics here. :D
3. Hermaphrodism doesn't usually cause much problem in people except for social ramifications etc. Sometimes if drs mess with things to assign a gender there can be resultant problems from those surgeries but otherwise I haven't heard of a problem. I would inform the breeder though. He or she may want to know.
4. It could be the boys appeared sleepy because it was late in the evening and they were relaxed or it could have been the 10k hike earlier but what ever the case they did appear a bit sleepy.
5.
I might have to retract my statement about what kind of Pit owner I am...as hubby has kindly pointed out to me that I seem to be more of a short, slightly overweight and female housewifey type of Pit Bull owner....sorry for any confusion caused
 I hope that didn't come as too much of a shock to you.
6. Well you could let him play as normal and the second he tried that - take him home. If he wants to run and play and swim enough he may eventually leave off the humping.
7. For my boys it seems to just settle them down and they get sleepy. It's the most relaxed Kavik ever gets.
8. Polly said she was from Italy right? Isn't that were they have banned over 100 breeds of dogs?
9. My mom left the tv on and put her old plastic crate (door removed) beside the tv stand, closed all the windows and blinds and gave her a pet skullcap and valerian pill. She was still a nervous wreck but a bit better. Kavik is freaked by fireworks too, he tries to scare them away by barking at them. I give him half a melatonin tablet and take him too the basement bedroom - works pretty well. Polly - most people here are very knowledgable and educated pet owners. It is good you are concerned about animal welfare but you can probably assume we have checked to see that the products we are giving our dogs are safe. Vets of ok'd and even encouraged the use of people medicine for pets before especially things like - aspirin, gravol, melatonin, pepto bismal etc.
10. Ah well money would be the point I suppose. :(
11. A gravol is a generic travel aid. Sedates slightly and settles stomache. I was thinking you could go with the lowest dose for a child and then reduce it for weight to scale.
12. My mum's dog is flipping out. She is shaking so bad and salivating she is made so nervous by fireworks. My mum has given her a small amount of gravol before as it calms her but it isn't doing much to take the edge off. How much can she safely give her 10lb dog?
13. True enough Mouse. I am a dog person and I don't mind a bit of dog fur, a few dog nose prints around the house, stepping on dog toys etc but I really don't like dogfurballs rolling through the house like tumbleweed.
14. Goo - That is sort of what I do only I use my hand and my method isn't as efficient. I point the hose, loosen the fur, run hand across, rinse at the end of the stroke. I keep meening to get one of those rubber comb things. I wouldn't have thought it would work as well on longer haired dogs but its good to know. SPG - You might want to try brushing them while their wet. Keeps the fur from going everywhere.
15. I went out in the yard to give it a quick spray down and decided to give the boys a good bath. The outdoor hose has warm water if I want and has better coat penatrating power than the shower. Did Kavik in about 15 min, probably less. The rest of the time I spent on Zaphod - rinse Zaphod - run hand over coat - wash completely covered hand off - repeat - like 30-40 times - give up as hair is coming off just as fast as when I started - finish washing - start brushing - fill grocery bag with fur - switch brushes - arm gets tired - give up In total I spent 1 hour and 45 min. 20 min on Kavik with brushing, 15 min on the yard and 1 hour and 10 min an Zaphod - most of that time spent defurring him! :o
16. That is a tough one. The only thing I can suggest is to leash him to you while at your mum's, watch him like a hawk, if he starts to cock a leg or squat or make a mistake in the house, wisk him outside quite briskly, let him finish outside - stay out there a long time if you have too, and praise. Maybe someone else has something better.
17. I don't really have a problem with folks colouring their pets as long as they do it safely and humanely. I don't like the accessory or dress-up toy attitude though. It sometimes, but not always, indicates that the attitude is like the dog were a toy or accessory as oppossed to a living thing which requires commitment etc. As a seperate issue it is good to make sure she knows the qualities of the breed she has adopted and is prepared to meet the animals needs. If she won't listen there is little else you can do.
18. Puppies are very fragile. Wild dog puppies are often in a dry, not to hot, not to cold den for several weeks after they're born. Breeding dogs and rearing pups is not a simple matter and should involve a great deal of research, planning and the observation and assistance with more than one breeding with a reputable breeder - there is a sticky somewhere on these forums on what makes a breeder reputable check that out. Spay your dog.
19. Gah! Just found out, my freind has been periodically feeding him a chunk or two of some Hill's Prescription Tartar Formulae or something for over two weeks now. He loves the crap. I think he is being picky over the Innova Evo because he wants the Hill's :-?
20. CE - I saw it on tv. The were actually working with an already trained scent dog who was bananas for the reward toy. The little GSD in the crate watching was really getting worked up. As soon as they let him out of the crate he went straight for the toy. Good luck ESS.
21.
i can't let people in my house after being away until i have done a panty recon mission! icon_rolleyes.gif he also sleeps with a pair of my shoes, which is more stalker-like than gross
22. Carse is very clever. For a while I had to keep Zaphod's dog food in a barrel pack (old heavy plastic olive barrel with a ring clap to keep the lid in place) or he would eat to dangerous levels. Maybe you could just put the garbage up - we have a shelf in the bathroom and that is where the garbage can is - strange but it works.
23. He sounds like a handful. Short of going to obed. class you could try artificially installing some desire for a toy in him so you could later use it as a reward for training. Some police forces do this with their dogs. They crate one dog and then play with another dog in a yard with a favoured toy. Over time the crated dog begins to associate the toy with a higher place in the pack and good attention etc. Then they use it for training reward later. You would need another dog - one who liked toys.
