1. that was funny the whole hot food thing  When Oscar (the oversized dumb pup) starts to think it really funny because he will abandon other seemingly subconcious process. example running down the hallway and someone knocks on the door he will turn his head and cock it sideways while still runnning down the hall, soon to be stoped by the incoming wall or if hes outside and is confused by something sometimes he will pee with holding totally still no leg lift or look around or anything just total concentration at what is at hand, makes for some REALLY funny times
2. you guys both made excellant points, I hadnt thought about dogs compared to chimps like that but it does make sense. I typed this out already and lost it so he goes the frusterated version When we were replaceing our patio after me and my step dad jack hammered all the concrete up we had a huge pile of rubble and dirt so on a saturday the whole family went out to pick the concrete out of the dirt. Nikki was young then and hadnt had Oscar yet so she was bored due to the fact she wasnt getting all of the attention, so she pranced around to try and lure us away from the dirt pile but gave up after awhile. Then she sat down right next to me, watched me dig and started digging with me, at first right on top of and into my hands. We all had a chuckle and let her dig in her little area so she could be part of the family. Well then I relized she really was digging out a piece of concrete (a small one of course) but after she freed it she picked it up and put in the wheel barrow she cleard out 5 hunks of rock before we were done, I was most impressed Im not sure if I consider it intellegance or not because we did provide a model so in a sense she just followed directions but I was and still am very amazed at that.
3. well I know nothing about Affies but it sounds like from here that they have "cat" syndrome, "what are you doing?..........I dont care" I think there is intellegence that works on both sides of the scale, or like training int. and survival int. and probably much more. but what about the book thing do you think that a dog could be told to get the blue readers digest instead of the red one, and have never seen either book before, retrieve the red one? or if I had like a gaurd dog or something and I told the dog to protect an akita that was standing next to a lab could he figure it out? or how about an AB and a Pit?
4. ever see the movie signs? get a rifle and get ready.........they are coming...... :o
5. well I can only speak for the west coast and Alaska and where the bears havent moved from the far out burbs our burbs have moved into their back yard. In Washington most people who are in a bear area are pretty well trained and acustomed to them it is the cougars and mountain lions that are killing people, kids mostly. interesting little fact, you are around 130% less likely to be attacked by a bear or cougar if you have a dog with you. in fact dogs are the number 1 suggested defense against bears and big cats. I've heard the barking and ferocity scares the animals off. Nikki and Oscar went tearing after a black bear last time we took them to Alaska, it kinda freaked me out but the bear took off like a bat outa hell, no prob :D
6. so I read this post not to long ago about some chicks dog who was praised for looking for his tennis ball, and it was impresive and all but I tend to think my dogs mental ability far outdo that from time to time. But Im not trying to start a pissing match it made me think/remember something, years ago I saw a show about this old man in the mid west who claimed to have the smartest dog ever and yadda yadda but on the program it showed the dog retrieveing books of a specific color and title, which is easily written off by repition but I wonder, how smart can a dog get?
7. you got it nancy, I'll beat the hell out of a dog if it thinks its got one over me! my Mom doesnt like my bear plan either, as a kid in Fairbanks and Anchorage she was always told to play dead. I dont remember who said it but youve never seen a bear run if you think 30 degrees of hill is gonna flip him. dont forget they have 4 massive points of contact compared to our instable 2 feet wraped in rubber. seriously I dont care what you are doing or where you are you will never get one over on a bear, land sea or air and that goes for ANY bear, hold koala  and the shark thing, if I stuck a hand into a gill of a 6 gilled shark, hmmm that leaves 5 intake mechanisms plus I can hold my breath for about 2.50 min and I'm not a fish so I'm gonna bet a fish could at least tripple that time if not multiply exponitialy that time, no Im going for the eyes
8.
Hobbit has been the centre of us girls' attention!!!
now theres a scary thought  on the bear thing, they arent hunters they are scavangers thats why they go for fish, its an easy target. I mean think about it when was the last time you saw a bear chasing down a moose? My point is they dont expect you to fight back so if you can bust a nose or pluck an eye it must really throw them for a loop. I guess the MAJOR exception here is when mommy is protecting baby and your between them, your just out of luck did you know a Grizz can run up a hill faster than you can go down? and a brown bear at full speed is about 3 times faster than an olympic sprinter? so dont run
9. well Im gonna go the other way with this one. If the dog is trying to get you to "go away" then Id just go away, and its over. but if the animal is attacking you, unprovoked then Im gonna be real stern with it and I'll definatly be looking it in the eyes. If the dog is openly challenging you to a fight, accept the fight without delay! well how about this, I was recently "rushed" by a feral dog on a paper route at about 3am he was in a full charge when I figured out he was coming for me. So I gave a war cry and rushed the dog swinging two papers in bags like numchucks I never came close to making contact with the animal, as soon as I started my charge he bolted  If you really think about it when would an animal attack a larger stronger animal alone? only if it was crazy or threatend either way hes gonna attack so you had better fight back or we might read about it the next mourning. The thing is I think most attacks are the "get out of my territory" attacks and people just dont get out of the way fast enough, I mean if the dog shows aggresion and you passively back off, it was a territory issue not a blood thirst. I read on a page Hobbit suggested to me that only 3% of dog attacks are malicious in nature, or non territorial H.N. said
BE A LOG! Drop to the ground on your belly, and cover the back of your neck with your hands... if you get rolled over, roll back over to your belly. This way your vitals are covered. You may still get hurt because your being attacked, but at least it won't be serious damage.
I gotta just throw this out there, this is NOT the current suggested plan of action for a black bear attack and actually not exactly for a grizz either, let me explain. Black bears (the small ones) play with their dead in the same manner Orca whales do, so DONT PLAY DEAD, at the point contact is made YOU MUST BECOME THE AGGRESSOR and fight for you life because this might be it. You must make the bear think your not worth the fight, pick up a stick and or gauge the eyes kick bite and scream!!! I'll try to find a study done by S. Cal. Univ. to show you guys but if you fight back in a balck bear attack you are 300% more likely to survive the attack! Brown bears (the big ones) are alot more like golden retriver, simple and lazy but if you somehow manage to piss one off you are in huge trouble! be big and bad UNTIL THE BEAR MAKES CONTACT because if you fight these guys back you will be adding fuel to the fire so in this case stop, drop and pray  H.N. is not wrong but it is the old way of dealing with encounters, I hike alot and frequent obsolete parts of Alaska and Canada and we always go over these basics before we go out.
10. how bad do those dogs shed? I know it's gonna vary between dogs but how many times a day do you shiba owners vacuum?
11. Im terrible at this game when puppies are involved but I'm gonna guess its a Lab mixed with something with similar coat and apperance but with a shorter face, something about his close up doesnt say full lab, to me what did Jac look like as a pup?
12. Goo, I said that just for you  no on the reality side I'll bet 90% of small dog owners over feed their dogs, I'm actually thinking more like 98% but thats just cuz I dont see very many over weight pugs
13. well I didnt want to get into this one, but......you are all wrong! as I remember the answer was posted to this question quite some time ago, let me go find it..........ah yes, here it is I said in "what is the biggest dog a st. or mastiff" to be found at http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=2243
well let me be a bit more specific then since I wouldnt want to sound uneducated and dictatorish, so for the details and the new standards, The Mastino male is 350-450 pounds and 50-54" at the withers, his canine teeth will be a minimum of 3" ears cannot be croped but I will let docking be optional. hmm, am I forgeting anything, oh the only acceptable color will be jet black and any case no matter how small of cherry eye is not alowed, also all other dogs will be expected to learn the "Mastino hop" and thus at all shows and competions every breed must lunge with every step and walk as massive as possible, this includes poms, pugs and yorkies _________________
now people lets not forget next time
14.
you've never seen the dachshunds my grandpa has!!!
DUDE, what is it with little dog owners and obesity? my girlfriends mom's pom is absolutly horrid! it looks like a full grown elephant seal, and has lost ALL range of motion in its neck! "thyroid"..... yeah right  you know I can only remember seeing 1 REALLY obease large dog, but it was a Golden and they are EATERS so I understand but I see fat little dogs everywhere I go! I think ALL toy breed owners have social and psychological problems....
15. is there a differance between an old eniglish and a "normal" english? cuz my Guiness book just says "english mastiff"
16.
.....US Dalmatians are larger than Aust. Dals....
you must not have seen that Euro Dalmation pic posted awhile back, the one that looked like it was mixed with an AB, he was HUGE and definatly not american. I think its because our dogs are all fat and spoiled :D
17. I had two, but they moved in with my mom, they didnt like being home alone while I worked and went to school and now they are around people 24/7 I still see them alot though. It was just something I had to do for the best interest of the dogs, I still feel guilty though
18. jchid, that sounds like fun, they seem to be a very good place for dogs in need. I wonder do you know an Andrea there? I had emailed her back and forth about some conncerns I had for Sterling the Neo. She was gonna get back to me and ease my mind after she checked up on Sterlings house but I have yet to hear from her. you dont know anything about Sterlings owner Norm, do you? Guest Pat, Do you know ABs pretty well? cuz I have some Qs if you do. I dont understand where you are coming from, the rescue doesnt really have any say in the dogs they get.
19.
Like if it's been 28 degrees out all day
I dont think cold water will kill your dog but it would leave the door open for sickness to its damage, so here are my cold weather suggestions if its that cold out I'd put the water in an old tire so that the black rubber heats the water as the sun shines. make sure the sides of the vessle contact the surface of the tire rim. I'd also make sure the dog can get off the frozen ground or snow so that he can sun bathe when needed. in addition to sun baths I would also get a large heat lamp the kind used for large hogs and farm animals that need to be kept warm. Put the heat lamp in with some hay and it will make big differance. (Carefull though you have the ingrediants for a nice fire) after you build the dog an enclosure, place black roofing paper on all sides, tack it down tight, not only is it black but will seal off the water. last but not least you should insulate the inside of his pen, just use the pink stuff and partical board or plywood. you can make a toasty little home this way.
20.
Just checked back to see what happened after I left(I figured it would be a happy ending), and I just HAD to see THIS:
Quote: yeah she was here before you and I think right after mary, god I'm glad that little era is over

Egg I was talking about Mary she was an absolute terror. I can give you the respect for at least sticking around even though your first thread here was a bit "real" for a kid in your shoes. That is actually a big thing to be able to shun something like that. I'm not TRYING to be mean and I'm not personaly attacking YOU I dont care who you are or where you live I'd say the same things as I do to you. If you come to talk with the adults I'm gonna break you off like one when it comes down to it. The worst thing you can do is leave this site, in essance i'm willing to bet were all you have in the support section. So dont get all in a knot, just step back and view the problem with the "big picture" in mind. Admitt that Duck isnt in a very healthy place and then WE can ALL help you with a solution. But as long as you fight for duck to stay in the position she's in I will bombard you with common sense until you start making sense and we can fix the problem. Egg I dont HATE you and you shouldnt really care if I did, I just think you are acting incredibly foolish and inmature. I'm not a mother I'm not a woman and not terribly tolerant when it comes to animals. I give you my view because its my job to state and sometimes overstate the obvious. There are a TON of mothers on this board that are into petting you till it feels better and making you get all warm inside, I do the opposite, I'd rather throw you over board to teach you how to swim
21. what do you think of beef if the dog is not allergic? the reason I ask, I'm not big on chicken unless its teriyaki so let me make sure I got this straight, a canine multi vitamin and then Human C and E vits what about other human supplements like alfalfa and glucosimine? and then I need to find a source for homeopathic remedies as needed or is there a good book? last but not least I need to pick up 'coaching the canine athlete' for a workout program. ummmmmm I dont think I can think of anything else right now.....but I know there was more
22. yeah I had a pretty famous incounter and learned to hate the news media as well, they dont care about anything they dont even attempt to get the facts and they dont even care about reason. I hate the news you cant trust them worth a sh!t :x anyway thats a pretty disturbing story goo, once again I feel for ya :)
23. I think it looks disturbing :o
24. yeah doc the medium dogs are the ones that are in for the long haul better stick to a tea cup or a Neo  however if your willing to up the size a little bit and buy a larger collar I hear Hippos are great slow-medium paced runners
25. oh jeez, Im glad it was what it was I thought we might have another K on our hands   just kidding K :D
