Screw you! *I* want him!! :o Seriously, good luck! He really is an eye catcher. And did I read somewhere you used to have Lhasas? Kinda sorta off topic, but I have three of the little beasties. If I don't eventually get into showing Standard Poodles, I've thought about showing Lhasas in the waaaaayyy off future. We now return you back to your regular oooooooooohing and aaaaaaaahing.

Fascinating! :o For what it's worth, one of our client dogs had some mysterious hair loss and the biotin thing did the trick. The dog (Schnauzer) now has lovely hair all over where before he had hair only in patches. Probably not the same thing as Ilsa since this dog had sores and inflamed skin. Anyhoo, the client was telling me that she happened to run into someone somewhere and, by whatever stroke of luck, this person told her to try the dog on biotin. All I know is that after medicated shampoos, diet changes, pred, etc., the dog fully "recovered" with the biotin. I would never have known that had she not shared her experience with a total stranger with me. Sometimes my clients teach ME things. Good luck to Ilsa and I hope it does the trick.
:o...is moving an option??
Not any time in the near future. I'd be afraid that at this point we'd only be taking "it" with us, anyway. :-?
It seems you've already explored every possibility I can think of (short of calling in a HAZMAT team :-? ).
That actually made me perk up. HAZMAT teams are supposed to be qualified to handle anything from chemical spills to biohazards, right? Lol, it made my wheels turn for a minute. Kat, that's kind of what I was wondering about. My vet kind of got wide eyed :o when I mentioned a dilute bleach water solution  . I wonder what kind of disinfectant I can make up that might be effective and yet safe. I think I'm going to see what I can find out. At this point, when I ask questions, he's saying, "let's wait until the culture comes back."

one of my foster pups is sick
Horsefeathers! replied to Baileysmom's topic in Veterinary information
Aw, parvo is such an icky thing. It doesn't have to be a death sentence, though. Treated aggressively, it can be overcome. The biggest threat comes from dehydration rather than the virus itself. I'm sure you already know this, but isolate any sick doggers away as much as possible. Parvo can live in the ground for quite a while (years I am told). Good luck and know it isn't your fault. -
I agree with Cairn... I think a lot depends on the individual dog. My little Poodlet is ALL dog, splashing in mud puddles, swimming in the pool, rolling in dead stuff if she gets a chance and doing normal dog things. Tucking a little dog away in a purse of sorts is not a trade off for normal dog activity (unless you're the type who believes a dog is just a fashion accessory... some people are like that). I kind of like that I can take her with me into places where I couldn't ordinarily take a dog and she enjoys it as well. Again, I suppose it will depend on the individual dog. I'm sure I wouldn't do it if she didn't enjoy it. Of course, I take some of my larger dogs into places, too, unless someone specifically says they can't come in, but that's beside the point. I didn't realize that so many people had problems with big dog/little dogs. The only time my Peanut has gotten hurt from being trampled was when I trampled her myself  . In the five years she's lived here with much larger dogs, even my clumsy big oaf of a Lab who constantly tromples ME, she's never had a problem. Then again, though she's small, she's not particularly fragile. I reckon it's good advice and something to be aware of. I just didn't realize it was such a problem for so many people. Of course, with the luck we're having, now that I've said all this, my little dog is going to get pummeled. It's just the natural order of things. :-? DAL, I hope you're able to get the perfect portable companion for you. Good luck! 8)

Oh, I forgot! Erin, they do all get bottled water. That initially started to help with the tear staining of a couple of my Poodles, but everyone now gets the bottled water. That was one of the first things my vet asked about. Thanks for mentioning it, though, because we are certainly open to ideas. Kat, I mentioned to Doc about the foot washing thing and he said we would have to virtually do a surgical scrub on all their feet each time they come in for it to do any good because of all the cracks and crannies in the pads. I mentioned the dilute bleach water idea and he said, "yikes." I thought it (the foot washing) sounded like a good idea, though. I had even figured out a way (I think) to get an assembly line going with all 10 dogs. Bleaching the yard, though, is definitely in our plans. I'm wondering if maybe our carpet might be contaminated beyond any hope of sanitation. Some of the accidental blowouts were in the house  and we've cleaned and cleaned and cleaned with enzymatic cleaners and sprayed with disinfectants, but you can't really bleach down carpet. I'm wondering if "it" might be embedded in our carpeting beyond any means of disinfecting. I mentioned that to Doc and he kind of shrugged, but he didn't think it was likely. Well, it seems as possible as anything else we can think of. Thoughts, anyone?

Smooshie, I was kind of wondering who I p*ssed off, too. :-? Chico is home tonight and ate a little. He still smells "sick" to me, but he seems to be feeling a little better. Perry isn't any worse than he was this morning and he's not acting like he feels bad (he was very sick before), so who knows? Maybe it was just an unrelated upset tummy. Anytime one of them so much as poots funny these days, I get all paranoid. Thanks, guys. I'll let you know what the culture shows.

Thoughts and prayers for a good friend please
Horsefeathers! replied to Mutt_Lady's topic in Everything about dogs
Poor guy. Sending healing thoughts. -
t some of the ingredients for the blue stuff are used to kill cockroaches. i dont want to use that unless I know its safe in her ears.
Courtnek, as far as I know (and what I use), plain boric acid (like the roach stuff) are fine. The same exact boric acid is marketed to groomers and vets in commercial ear powders for use in drying out ears and removing ear hair (gives a better grip on the hair). When I made up my blue power batch, I just used plain household boric acid (roach killer) and have never had a problem with it. As "advertised," it has worked like an absolute charm for mine. Someone tell me if I'm wrong? I know I'm right about the ear powder, so I assume that's what makes it safe for the blue power recipe.
-
Or Loki might know, lol.
-
Court, I wish I could help, but I don't know the first thing about an ear cleaning recipe using peroxide. You may need to wait until Cassie is back on. It seems she may be the one to know. Sorry. :( I'm not understanding what you mean by this:
I cant find any pharmacy with the ingredients that I trust for the "blue stuff"..
You mean, you can't get the ingredients? I am familiar with this recipe, just unsure of what you meant.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Miss Candy! 8) Poor girl is probably miserable, but she knows you love her.

Lol, if I did, I'd never cop to it! :P

I think there may just be a difference in perception. Sometimes people think "teacup" meaning a really small dog when it really refers to "toy." Hopefully, this is just a case of, what, mistaken identity? DAL, I don't think anyone means to come off as personally attacking you. I think that we, as a group (which includes you  ), are generally very pro-rescue and people tend to bristle when they think someone might be planning to support poor breeding practices (which deliberately breeding/buying "teacups" would be). I'm not saying I believe that about you at all at this point... just saying I can understand the "alarm." I just don't have a mental image of you as being someone who would support suffering. I give you a lot of credit for having intelligence, so I'm sure you'll buy or adopt responsibly. I think it's just a difference in perception... some people perceive toys to be teacups and vice versa. I hope it's just a simple misunderstanding. Now... I don't typically worry about the difference in sizes of my dogs in the house. I have dogs ranging from my Toy Poodlet (7-9ish lbs) all the way up to Standard Poodles, a Lab and a Dobe in the house. I've not had many problems with the smaller ones getting trampled, at least by other dogs (can't say I haven't trampled them a time or two  ). I love being able to put my little Peanut Poodlet in a "purse" and take her anywhere. My vet recently opened this really NICE specialty store that carries all sorts of pet related items and they have the neatest little dog purses with the vents and all that fancy jazz. I almost thought of splurging and getting one, but I'm making due with my catch all bag for now. Good luck and I hope you find the portable dogger of your dreams. I'm kind of partial to *ahem*cough* Yorkies. 8)

Kat, I thought about that, but with 10 dogs bolting in and out the door, I'm afraid I would miss someone. I was wondering how it might work putting a tub of very dilute bleach water right outside or inside the door where they'd HAVE to cross it when they came in? I notice this morning Perry is having some tummy problems and loose stool. He JUST got over this "thing." I'm not taking chances, but starting him on another round of antibiotics since we're now stockpiling them. D*mmit. :x
-
Sorry I couldn't check back sooner. Our power went out last night due to Jeanne and we just got it back. Chico is spending the night at the vet's. His turn, I reckon. :( It appears to be the same "thing" that has been going around with The Gang. DP, I kinda sorta wondered the same thing (poison) and it's not a far fetched idea considering my neighborhood, but we have been diligently monitoring our yard and walking the perimeter daily. We haven't seen any sign of anything tossed over the fence. No garbage, no packages, no remnants of "bait" or anything we can find. We've even been walking out with them on their potty outings and we don't see anyone trying to eat anything. This kind of thing is exactly why we try so hard to be good doggy neighbors. I mean, I always worry that someone will be annoyed and try to harm them, so we are very diligent in not letting them remain outside to bark and keeping them fenced in our yard so they aren't in trash, in other yards, etc. We are very conscientious and hope nothing has happened that would make someone want to hurt them. :-? Doc is sending a sample of "it" off to the lab for a culture to see exactly what we're dealing with. All we know is that "it" is bacterial since it responds to antibiotics. Court, we had talked about the bleaching thing and it's a for sure thing now. As soon as these storms are through with us, we are bleaching the entire yard down, grass be d*mned. I don't know how effective that will be, but we'll certainly find out. Another option, depending on what the culture shows, is going to be to shift the entire yard around. It's the back part of our yard that is fenced now, but if it comes down to it, we may just have to dig up the fence and shift it to the front. Doc said that sometimes with livestock, you have to let some fields/pastures sit unoccupied for a while when strains of whatever(?) go through (sorry, not real knowledgeable about livestock stuff, so I'm only posting my interpretation of what he said). If our yard is contaminated with something and bleaching doesn't do it (which it may not since the ground is absorbant), we may just have to basically condemn that part of the yard. I don't know if it might have started with the water washing up from the recent hurricanes, but it sounds as possible as anything, I suppose. Basically, it's wait and see until the culture comes back which could be 5-10 days. When I left the clinic today, Chico still wasn't eating and didn't look like he felt too good, but he doesn't look any worse than any of the others did when they had to stay. I hope my little guy will fight this off as successfully as the rest did. Thanks for checking on us!
-
With the weather acting up like it is, we are staying put. We'll start Chico on Baytril tonight (thank the powers that be that I had some on hand from the recent infections) and he will see the vet first thing in the morning. :(
-
Ugh! Chico just shot blood several feet across the room. Waiting for the vet to call me back now. Looks like another after hours visit to the vet. The third one in two weeks. :(
-
Just when we think everyone's healthy and happy, another one of my babies seems to be sick. Chico didn't eat tonight and he's kind of mopey. His gums look a little pale to me and he seems kind of uncomfortable when you put any pressure on his abdomen. He'll be off to the vet tomorrow (I'm never gonna get this bill paid down! :o ). Again, and as always, please wish us luck that it's nothing serious. Out of all the dogs we have, Chico was the first one here and at one time an only child (believe it or not). He's the senior canine resident here. Please don't let it be anything major. At this point, with the luck we've had, I'm kind of paranoid. :-? And I'm worn out. She's a very, very, very, very, very.... perky, happy girl. She loves the other dogs who are trying their best to bully her (she just doesn't care and continues to treat them as if she thinks they're playing) and I think a stranger is just a friend she hasn't met yet. That whole three legged thing doesn't slow her down a bit. It will take some getting used to that she's not Rocco. I mean, she's sweet and joyful, but not quite as "refined" as Rocco was. Rocco was the epitome of manners and training. We'll need to work on that leash pulling and overexuberance thing a bit with Peaches, but I reckon that's a lot better than dealing with other behavioral issues. I think she's smart enough to learn. So there's my check in. I think I need a nap.
-
I'm Atlanta bound to pick up da Peaches! It's pretty much going to be a day trip... about 4 hours up and 4 more back, so I'll check in this evening. Seeeeee ya! 8)

I knew that Visine was crap! My husband virtually lived on them before his eye surgeries and would shove them at me every time I'd get a case of the bleary eyes. I'd rather poke a sharp stick in my eye. :x Court, I was kind of thinking it sounded maybe like you got a bit of fluff in your eye, or a scratch or something. It seemed kind of unusual to me, too, just to have one eye swell like that, but then I'm no scientist type. Either way, I hope you find some relief. When I first read the title, "allergic to Ford," I thought, "yeah, me, too," until I realized you meant your cat. :P

Thread on a banning Pit bulls!!
Horsefeathers! replied to Sharpeigirl's topic in Amstaffs & Pit Bulls
The reason the thread got locked is because you were turning it into a circus with your endless pro-LOVE BUG posts. I started it as a discussion!
What a load of doo doo! What a crybaby thing to say! What is this person's idea of "discussion?" Everyone agrees with THEIR point of view only? They won't have the balls to come here and "discuss" it even though most of our Pit members are pretty eloquent and willing to openly talk. If this person would take their head of the sand and be willing to genuinely consider alternative points of view, they might actually be able to learn something rather than assume s/he knows it all already. So sad, that mindset. It's kind of like men who beat their wives and girlfriends and then excuse it away by saying, "I wouldn't have to do that if you didn't make me angry..." -
That's about the best you can do... clean it and wrap it. My Penny once sliced hers waaaaaaaaaaayy deep, but it healed really quickly by just keeping it clean and dry. I am the superglue queen when it comes to cuts. If it can be glued shut, I'll do it.
