Thanks for the ideas everyone.... I wish they could just make a law that you need a licence to breed, if only it were that easy and there were only good breeders out there who sold their pups to only good homes!!!! When I got Lily I got lucky, she already had an offer on her, this guy in Tamworth had his heart set on her and was even willing to pay alot extra for her, but the breeder knocked him back as he had a full time job and wouldn't have the spare time that a boxer needs each day, so she sold Lily to me :D If only all breeders were more like her!!!! The world would be such a happier place with all doggies happy and safe in a home that loves them and has the time and patience a dog needs, but instead there are these unscrupulous owners who neglect their doggie and so the doggies not happy and bites someone and gets put down, then all the other dogs with the good owners have to sacrafice their beloved pets just because of these other stupid owners who ruin it for everyone!!!!! I'll have to do my research on this one, it might have to wait until the end of the week seeing as I have an important psych essay to write, but at the end of the week, look out Sue King, you've got one hell of an angry Jeanne to face!!! :agrue:

Yeah well if its airborne then why kill innocent dogs? I don't know, just sounds to me like the chinese government trying to look as though they are doing something to stop the spread of this deadly virus, at the cost of the dogs life even though they know the dogs don't have anything to do with it

I was skimming through the local paper this morning when something evil, very evil, caught my eye... KING CALLS FOR BAN ON DAGEROUS DOGS Armidale Dumaresq Councillor Sue King has called for stronger action against dangerous dogs and their owners. Cr King has asked senior officers to investigate whether council can ban certain breeds of dogs deemed dangerous. "I would like to see Armidale have a ban on what could be called dangerous dogs", she said. "We have a number of dogs that are entirely unsuitable to be kept in the town environs. Most of them are shut up in small backyards. "Rottweilers and the like are capable of killing children and little old ladies, like me, and I object to having them in town," Cr King said. ARGH!!!!! THIS MAKES ME SO ANGRY!!!! Ok, I know the best way to go about it would be to start a petition or something, but I really don't think I'd have to time to organise all that... I've been rather busey lately. So what I was thinking is I could write a letter to the newspaper.... I did it a few years ago about the local dog park, next thing I was on the front page of the paper, on abc national radio and even in an australia/new zealand wide magazing on the first page!!! Oh, and of course, the dog park has been fixed! So I'm just asking you guys if you have a few good arguements I could throw in, I'm really furious about this stupid excuse of a woman that decides she doesn't like the dogs so take away good peoples rights to own them. Next thin I'll be having to leave town because she'll decide she doesn't like Boxers!!!! And whats this crap about "what could be called dangerous dogs", does she even know a Pomeranian is capable of killing a child??? Any dog could be called a dangerous dog, I think she should be talking about dangerous owners!!! Wouldn't time be better spent educating them? And the breeders to breed dogs with better temprements? She says they are unsuitable for the towns environs, what is that supposed to mean? If owners walked their dogs they would be fine, reguardless of the breed, its not the dogs fault if stupid owners keep them locked up all day! :x Help me fight this evil, evil woman to the death!!!! :agrue:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/2989479.stm There is no evidence that domestic pets can spread Sars to humans Asia's Sars epidemic has been claiming non-human victims, as the Chinese authorities target domestic pets suspected of spreading the disease. In Beijing, dogs and cats belonging to Sars patients are being rounded up and killed, officials said on Wednesday. However other animals may be benefiting from the war on Sars, as China cracks down on the trade in endangered species. Although veterinary experts have said there is no evidence Sars can be transmitted to humans from household animals, the authorities are taking no chances. "Pets can spread diseases. People can take measures to prevent diseases being spread, but not pets," a Beijing police official told the French news agency AFP. "If a family has Sars and they have pets, we will catch and kill the pets regardless of whether they show Sars symptoms." Chinese citizens are required by law to pay a special tax if they want to own a pet, but in the past this law has been frequently ignored. Now, however, the police have started to actively enforce it. "If we find any stray dogs or cats, or if anyone make reports to the police about people illegally raising pets, we will send people out to catch the animals and deal with them," the official said. Sometimes the pet owners themselves are eager to get rid of their animals. A man in Beijing's Fengtai district threw his Pekinese dog from the sixth floor of his apartment block because he suspected it might have Sars, according to the Beijing Star Daily

I know what you mean about the gross things dogs eat. I'll mix up raw veggies, eggs, raw liver, cod liver oil, kelp, brewers yeast etc, all that real disgusting stuff, and the dogs love it!!! Good for 'em though!!!! Lily really grosses me out when I take her for walks and she'll find a dead roo and run around with one of its legs... ick!

Yeah, apparently they aren't supposed to have fruit for at least half an hour before other meals. I havn't heard anything like that about veggies though?
Just learnt from Cosmic's breeders (husband & wife own Cosmic's parents) today: The husband sleeps with his arms around their male cocker spaniel - they literally HUG sleeping!!!!!! :sleep2:
Yeah, I have a habit of ending up like that when Lilys not pushing me out of bed... the number of times I'd woken up to a Boxer head on my pillow next to mine, unable to move because my arms are around her and hers tightly around me is riddiculous!!!! Yes! She actually wraps her paws around me and HUGS me!!!! Its so sweet, its a habit she picked up as a puppy and its just the sweetest thing.... the other night when I woke up and we were lying like this and her head was next to mine I wasn't too impressed with her breath but literally couldn't roll over because she was hugging me that tightly and I didn't want to wake her up!!!
it's because they're men.
LOL, I like that one  Cassie, cute story  Tessa used to do the same thing when I had a bunk bed, she'd jump on my toy box and up onto top bunk... clever dog  Oh and Bubblezzz, I don't think your friend buying a queen size bed will help her situation much. I have a queen size and have to wake up multiple times every night, get out of bed, walk around to the other side, get in and try to make it warm all because no matter what side I'm on Lily decides she wants it and pushes me out!!! Ah its a tough life living with dogs, but what would we do without 'em eh? Oh and by the way, Tessa does the bum thing too, only she doesn't only do it to people, she also does it to dogs. Mum thinks she's a hussy!!!! :o

Where I live the only "good" (by good, what I really mean is "expensive") brands are Iams, Eukanuba, Nutrience, Pedigree Advance.... there's only one pet shop here so there aint much competition and not much variety. I was feeding Lily Eukanuba for a while even though I couldn't afford it, she had stomach problems her whole life and nothing but Euk seemed to fix it. Then I found if I give her a good deal of raw food and a not quite so expensive dry food she's glowing with health and her tummy has been fine ever since. Her big meal in the morning is a BARF style meal, with pumpkin and other veggies, at the moment she's on pumpkin and cabbage, which she loves! I also mix with it yogurt, kelp, oil etc. With that she gets about 400g of meat, chicken necks and lambs flaps. I found the chicken necks alone didn't have enough fat on them, so now she gets both and has finally gained a good amount of wieght. I also give her a smallish chunk of offal (heart, liver, tripe, kidney etc) each day. Each night she gets a smaller meal of Pedigree Principal, with an egg added about 4 times a week. I can't really say much for dry food in itself, although I have heard alot of good things about innova. If you are interested in a BARF style diet though, a great aussie barf page I've just found is http://www.bluegrace.com/barf.html I know people say not to "supplement" dry food, but if you balance each meal out the dog still gets a balanced diet  Hope this helps.

LOL, can I come to one of your bbq's??? Do you give them cranberry juice?? Apparently thats good for some infections in dogs.

Yay! Rowies going to visit me!!!! :B-fly: And Snowpaws too :BIG: .... how about everyone from the forum comes and brings all their doggies and we can have a big gathering and eat chocolate and all snuggle up with all our doggies and watch movies  Sound like a plan??? :bday:
-
Woah Cassie, you must have some healthy dogs!!! :o Lily and Tess get raw foods, Lambs flaps, chicken necks, blended veggies, yoghurt, kelp and an egg everyday plus a bit of either liver, heart, kidney, tripe or chicken giblets etc each day. They also get any healthy table scraps we have, but I avoid feeding any grains.

Umm... that all depends on what you're looking for and how much you want to spend  I guess you've got the usual Sydney Harbour Bridge, Uluru, Oprah House etc. You could check out some Aussie zoo's? Taronga's a good one :D If I was travelling Australia I'd definately check out the Barrier reef, and stop by at the Gold Coast for a while, thats a great place :drinking: Hehe  Umm, can't think of anything else at the moment  Anyone else got any ideas??? Oh, and of course you could come and check out Australia's biggest attraction in history too... me :fadein:

Oh how cute! He's absolutly gorgeous, he's going to grow into the most handsome, loyal dog... I can see that already :D Lily had seperation anxiety when she was a pup, she still has it now. I've never known a dog to cry so much as Lily... even if I've just gone to the toilet she'll follow me and sit outside the door crying, and if I'm not at home she sits outside my bedroom door (the one that goes outside) and dig big holes in the lawn. Athenix --- HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! Sorry, no puppys for you... but have a good one anyway! :drinking:
-
Oh, you need to be a member to see the pics :( I'd simply sign up, but don't really have any time at the mo so I'll do it later  I'll bet he's just gorgeous though!
-
Oh cute cute cute!!!! How old is he? How big is he??? Email me the pics if you like and I'll see if I can get them working!!!
-
I let Lily slobber on me as well, every body else thinks its gross, but I love her so much I don't see the problem in a little dog slobber all over my clothes when its making her so happy  I also let Lily sleep on my bed sometimes, even though she pushes me out which keeps me awake all night and burps and farts, as dogs do  Tessa can't sleep on my bed as she's incontenent, also because Lily wont let her. Tessa doesn't like sobbering on people so instead I have to roll around on the floor and act like a complete maniac before Tess will get excited. I also take them both on picnics whenever I can, because they love that! :bday:

Saddest thing I have ever seen happen to a dog :(

Oh its so nice to hear first hand storys of people saving a mis treated dogs life. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!   -
As I said before, its all about knowing your dogs limits. The owner of the Boxer was just as much at fault as the owner of the pits, just because she didn't own a renowned "aggressive" breed doesn't mean responsibility should be taken off her hands to make sure her dog was under control. Surely she knew her dog may attack another dog under certain circumstances, so why wasn't she keeping a close eye on it? It sounds to me that the boxer saw an opportunity to take advantage of this situation where a pup was being pursued by two other dogs to run up and attack the under dog. Now everyone here knows how much I love Boxers, but I also realize they they aren't always little angels, the same goes for ANY breed. Those pits, by the sound of it, weren't even chasing with aggressive intentions, they were simply chasing because the puppy was running, had the pup not run the situation probably never would have happend. The fact that the Boxer was "covering" the GSD and didn't leave a good bite doesn't mean it wasn't just as much a part as the pits, all it means is that it didn't get a proper grip. This isn't about the breeds, its about the owners, it could have been any breed in that fight, it was the owners responsibility to remember their dogs limits. Please guys, lets not get into a debate because some stupid owners weren't responsible for their dogs. We all have our oppinions about different breeds etc, but I think enough has been said on the breed thing, everyones put in their two cents and I think we should just agree to disagree and stop being so petty about it all! So I'm calling for a truce.... whos in?

I know some people in here may disagree with me, but I think the sooner you get another dog the better. Don't feel like by getting another dog and falling in love with it you are forgetting Hazel, she knows she will always be in your heart. But it will make it alot easier for you to deal with. I still go with what I said before about getting a shelter dog though, puppys are cute, but shelter dogs will love you just as much and every day you will know you saved its life, I feel it every day with Tessa. I think you should keep your name, as a kind of tribute, and with your web page I say when (i say when because I know you'll do it) you make a page for your new dog, put it as a link as a memorial for hazel type of thing. It would be nice I think  Good luck in finding the right dog

LOL kids eh? My dogs are my kiddies, they're little angels though and don't need grounding
I still say if slim had actually asked a question, instead of blowing off steam about how he can't go to a park due to APBTs, it wouldn't have gone down like this.
I agree 100%!!!! I've just been sitting here reading this post in amazement, it wasn't the breed that was the problem, or even the particular dog.... IT WAS THE OWNERS! It makes me so angry when irrisponsible owners don't control their dogs and so people come up with comments like the "Pits should be banned from dog parks"... why? It should be stupid owners that don't control their dogs that should be banned, not the dog. A Pit, provided it has a good, responsible owner, has just as much right to be at a dog park as any other breed. It could have been any breed of dog that started the fight, its the owners responsibility to know their dogs limits. There is a Pit at dog training which is one of the friendliest dogs I've ever met, the GSD on the other hand will attack anything that moves, just because the owner isn't always responsible enough to know its limits doesn't mean I'll jump on here saying that all GSDs should be banned from dog parks does it? And then there's the issue of if the dog does get into a fight, will you stand back and watch the owner of the attacked dog try to sort it out? NO! Lily is great when she is off the lead, plays and runs to her hearts content... but if a fight does break out for whatever reason I'll risk an arm to stop it, she is my responsibility and I wont stand back and let her give the breed a bad name, as these owners so obviously have done  Sorry if I'm rambling, but I just get so furious at some peoples ignorance!!! (not neccissarily anyone here, mostly aimed at the owners of those dogs!!!) My friends dog was being savagely attacked by a saint bernard the other day while the owner casually called their dog back over the fence, my friend was scared to intervene as she thought the massive dog would turn on her. I guess what I'm trying to say is that some people just shouldn't own dogs :wallbash:

Hey, just got the local paper. Theres an article in it about a book the she and another professer at uni wrote called "Spirit of the Wild Dog". Apparently it focuses mostly on dingos etc and says about the whole domestic dogs killing the cattle thing. Lets hope this book pushes people in the right direction and educates them enough so they can spread the word! "Spirit of the wild dog asks us to preserve their spirit of freedom in the wild while acknowledging out enormous debt to them"... well said me thinks...
