1. Dogs "R' Me? Doggie-Do-All? Pet Practices? Happy Pets? Delighted Dogs?
2. how VERY cool!! S&R appeals to me more than agility, I would LOVE to have a dog that could rescue people!! WOO HOO for you and your pup!!! 8)
3. I have found with all my dogs that if fed dry food only, they tend to burn the lawn more. I have always fed mine a mix of dry and canned, and if I happen to have no canned I put water, and a little vegetable oil in the food. the key here is the water. only water will dilute the nitrogen enough to make it not burn. Like suggested, a particular "pee place" will work too.
4. also, there are electric collars yu can get to train them temporarily, involving a remote. but it requires you to put in the time. It's a small zap, which you administer thru the remote when the dog starts to attempt to climb the fence. It might be easier in the long run to teach them to not like the fence, then to make all the modifications.
5. interesting topic...K, are you sure my son didnt post this? (I'll give you his IP) we were having this argument just the other day. He wants an electric fence. I say no. Anyway, electric fences are only as good as the stubborness/mindset/whats-on-the-other-side/ attitude of the dog. Trust me when I say that an EF wont stop a determined male if there is a bitch in heat on the other side. Especially if not neutered. Both of mine would slam an EF if "prey" ran by. (they're hunting dogs) K's idea is actually the best. I think for the overhang she was thinking of barbed wire, like on prisons, but I dont think you need to be quite that safe. An overhang of wire like that without the barbs will do it. The dog just needs to be made unable to climb it, and jump over. A straight fence allows the jump, an overhang prevents it. The cement is also necessary, cuz when they realize they cant jump, they will dig. good luck
6. "shepherd" is spelled like that...not "Shepard".... the post was an FYI that the term Shepherd came about from combining "sheep" and Herd"...basically, it's a combo of the two words "sheep herder"... which is what shepherds were bred for originally. To the guest who asked about the electric fences...I apologize if you joined us at a bad time. Please try to understand that we have had some "internal" and "external" turmoil going on here the last few weeks, which we hope is finally over. And we didnt object to Rabid's question, just the way he worded it. Instead of being a queston, it came out as a challenge. And he has kept up the "challenge" despite the replies. I even answered him civilly, and he still kept being berating and insulting.
7. DONT let this "guest"take you off..thats what they want. THIS post was about a troll who wanted to slam "ugly' and "mean" dogs. DONT FEED THE TROLLS! I gave him a chance to come clean and ask a real question...I doubt he will.. DONT FEED THE TROLLS
8. Ok everyone who wants a crisis situation, this may be it. Am I the only person here (and i strongly DOUBT it )who is SICK TO DEATH of the continual controversy? I can always go with a good CIVILIZED debate. but lately, it seems that people join, or post as guests, and just slam dunk, abuse, mistreat and insult. Thats not why I joined Dogo. I can debate anyone, reasonably, and be civilized about it. But some of these posts have made me so angry that I lose all civilty, all rationality. OK that's me, but I have seen other posts who seem to react the same way. Is this how we want to be? I dont think so, most of the people here are civilized, and debate rationally. May I please make a suggestion to the Mods? If one of these issues comes up again, and is making people angry and unpleasant, please move it to the debate forum. that way, only people who want to fight it have to be involved. If you dont want to fight, you dont have to go there... thanks Katy
9. as has been said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And I DID answer you, it just WASNT THE ANSWER YOU WANTED TO HEAR... as far as MEAN? any dog can be mean, just like any dog can be loving. depends on upbringing and environment. I begin to think that maybe you consider some dogs mean because they dont like you....and I'm not real surprised. I'm getting to the point where I dont particularly like you either....you are closed minded, opinonated, and not willing to hear what anyone else has to say. Even when I offered to answer your questions if posed politely without belligerence. Are you aware that dogs know, through some sense people dont understand, "good" people from "bad" people? Maybe those dogs who were mean to you thought you were "bad" people....with the attitude you have displayed here, I would tend to agree with them... get over it. You're acting like a spoiled child who didnt get his way. I dont have time for that. I dont allow, or tolerate, my own son acting that way. You have a question, a REAL question, then ask. However, phrasing it in insults, innuendo and demeaning posts will get you nowhere. We dont need crap like that here. so grow up, or shut up. My offer stands, you have a real question, ask. Otherwise, get a job or something, and dont bother us with your BS anymore.
10. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. and there is NO reason to be so RUDE about it.... dont you have a bridge you should be crawling under?
11. "collar? he had a collar? sorry, I didnt notice, musta come off during the walk..." Training him is a good idea, but unfortunately, it will only help if the owners continue to implement it once you're done. He wold probably respond to them if they issued the commands, with real heart in it (Danes are very easygoing for the most part, and easy to train) but if they ar expecting him to "train himself", (which is what it sounds like) it's not going to work.
12. Shara, that means Coal has bonded to you. Best he bond to the boyfriend as well...   its a natural progression. They trust you, see you as a pack member, and so protect. best get the boyfriend under that wing.. UNLESS he is harmful. if he IS, get out. dogs know. I dont want to be a wet blanket on your relationship. I ALSO dont want you hurt. so just in case....trust the dog.
13. ****SIGH**** I think I already stated in my post, HAD YOU BOTHERED TO REALLY READ IT!! that the dog assistance societies ARE NOT IN IT FOR THE MONEY!!! they have people with real needs. people who want to live reasonably independant lives, who rely on these dogs to be their eyes, their ears, their hands and feet. should they be crossbred? YES!! if the eventual outcome is a dog who can service them better.
14. EXCELLENT!! REQUIRED READING FOR ALL DOG OWNERS!!
15. False pregnancy is not uncommon, after all, in the wild, there is no such thing. A dog/wolf that goes into heat mates, and gets pregnant. She may shred papers, chew things up and deposit them in a nest, even dig holes in the yard for the "den"...there is also the milk thing. In the wild, dogs who DO NOT go into heat, ( the "lesser" members of a pack, usually below the beta's) will develop milk to feed the Alpha's puppies if for some reason she cannot. Nature takes care of them. In OUR space it can be an issue. I believe you said you intend to breed her? If so, she will get over it. If not, get her spayed and it will stop. :D :D
16.
You mean shepards
I DO????? according to my Funk and Wagnel's (sorry, old joke) Shepherd's were HERDING DOGS...HERDED SHEEP...IMAGINE THAT!! someone else pointed that out, but I couldnt resist... DONT FEED THE TROLLS......DONT FEED THE TROLLS....DONT FEED THE TROLLS...           I cant, unfortunately, follow my own advice. he's TOO tempting to take NOT take on...
17. no PM's necessary - my real name is Katy Courtney (yes, I have two first names...   ) I often post emails I write to newspapers with my signature. So I guess I kinda assumed everyone knew it already!! :D
18. OK I swore I wouldnt feed, I know....BUT!! I agree with the others that your presentation of your "question" was both insulting to some, and demeaning to others. There are tactful ways to ask and answer questions. Like DP said, I am not one to keep my tongue on certain issues, and yes, I do sometimes get upset and "not-so-tactful"... for the most part, we all here try to be as civil to each other as we can. And that's why the majority of us get along so well. You are allowed to have a dissenting opinion. You are not allowed to be insulting, and ram it down people's throats. If you have real questions, just ask them politely and we'll help the best we can.
19. SHARPEI!!! ZEUS IS **GEORGEOUS** what a pretty dog!! I love Shepherds..... :D :D :D :D
20.

Mine have all been cremated. I have the ashes of my first dog and cat, because of unusual circumstances. the rest I scattered in places they loved to go for walks, or to play.
come on courtnek, don't set us up like that! Unusual circumstances? If it's hard to talk about I understand...
sorry! I have told this story before, but it may have been before you joined. My first dog was a Golden, the light of my life. He was everything everyone would want a dog to be. Took me through rough teenage years, and into adulthood. When I moved out, I took Taurus with me. I then got a cat, a shorthaired black evil minded thing, with amber eyes, who took to Taurus almost instantly. His name was Isis. Taurus was 9 when I got Isis. they bonded. I have a picture of Taurus with his paw over Isis' back, keeping him warm and protecting him. When Taurus was 13, he passed on. I had hm cremated and brought his ashes home. I came home from work, and found that Isis had taken the urn off the bookshelf in my room. and rolled it down the stairs, and was sleeping next to it. Same as he slept next to taurus every night. No matter where I put that urn, Isis would find it (this was a cat who could open any cabinet/door/whatever ever invented) Eventually I gave up trying to protect the urn, and bought a kitty bed, and put the urn in it. Isis slept with that urn unti he too, died. I had him cremated as well, and have urns with both their ashes, on the same bookcase headboard in my room.
21. Carol, if that was in response to my post, I apologize (truly!) maybe I should have said "complained", but "b**** seemed to fit the situation better. If that bothers you, I will tone down. sorry, again.
22. **sigh** Carol, you are absolutely correct. I withdraw from this argument. K, forgive me. I COULDNT HELP MYSELF!!! Deliberate stupidity always sets me off...   8)
23. the man who arrived at 10:00 p.m. should have been SMACKED upside the head AND charged an extra day...people can be SOOOO rude..... If you're not the sort to be LOUD in return (ask myself and HF about that, we'll gladly give you pointers...    ) then it's not the sort of life for you. You really gotta stand down on rude and obnoxious people in this arena.. they will take advantage of you if they think they can get away with it.... Glad you found out before you bought!! :o :o
