I knew something like this was going to happen!
courtnek replied to Lucky Chaos's topic in Everything about dogs
the dog doesnt know its place. this is not uncommon with small dogs, their "too little to be dangerous"...NILIF is the way to go, if your aunt will listen to you. little does not mean not dangerous, just a less major injury... :o -
NILIF is a lifetime agreement. you cant stop it when the dog "appears" to be better. in the wild, this would be enforced for the life of the wolf. for good reason. they are not stupid, in fact they are manipulative, and if they get it in their head they want to be top dog, they'll do whatever they can to get there. you need to reintroduce NILIF, and continue to do it from now until cesar dies. this is not harsh, in fact they prefer it. they want to know their place, and the only reason they try to take over is because they dont. not knowing their place goes against every instinct they have in the wild. they are dogs, but those intstincts are still there. these are the only rules they know. its up to us to enforce them. again, PM me or come here if yu need help. 8)

awwww...thanks! you guys are the best. I told him about Dogo, by the way, and said if he has issues to come here. he laughed and said he might.; if he does, he will log on as "officer Dude" which is what I kept calling him (I couldnt pronounce his last name if I had to. it was about 13 characters long....)
-
that crossed my mind as well, but, alas..married with children...which is ok, but damn...I hope she appreciates him!! he is very nice and told me about a park where he takes his dogs..(him and his wife go) so I might check it out... how come I'm always a day late and a dollar short?

definitely NILIF...dog should NOT snap at you no matter what!!! PM me if you need help. there are websites that go into NILIF in detail

**update**** Officer Dude (not his real name, obviously ) came by and took the neighbors statements and then came and talked to me for a while. I asked him why he didnt ticket the guy, because obviously he was offleash and thats against the law here...his answer surprised me. he said there is a growing front of BSL people (BSL is illegal in this town right now) and "aggressive dog" people trying to ban Pits, Rotties, the usual scenario. he said if he wrote a ticket, I would have to go to court, and if I came up against a BSL or aggressive dog judge, there is a possibility I could lose. by NOT writing a ticket, the only way this will ever see a courtroom is if he sues, and he doesnt believe the guy will, since the officers pointed out to him that he was breaking the law. he has hounds! two of them. Tree walkers! he felt bad for Laurel cuz his hounds are gentle beasts as well, and he knows how they would react if this happened. He said it was good I decided to take Free and wanted to know what kind of dog she was. I said Lab X and he looked startled, then checked her over and said "I see pointer and possible shepherd in her. the tail is shepherd"...so he knows his dogs. I know she has pointer and have always suspected shepherd, because of the tail. (he meant GSD) I was surprised at how easily she accepted him checking her out. she's not usually good with people she doesnt know, not aggressive, just wary....but she liked him right off the bat. (to me, thats a sign he's a good guy. I trust her instincts more than mine) so I feel much better now, and I've made a new friend. sometimes things happen for the oddest reasons....

thats correct. you know more than you think. medical would be the only issue, and he wasnt hurt that bad. yea, there was a bite mark and some blood, but not much at all. Free let go as soon as he backed down. she even warned him 2 or 3 times, by snapping and posturing (which the neighbors also saw) and when he wouldnt back down, then she bit him. the funny part was that the guy kept calling her a "bitch", which had me cracking up...he apparently didnt realize that ALL female dogs are considered "bitches"....
-
TOO FUNNY!!!
-
Free sleeps very lightly, but Laurel? I have had to shake her awake a few times, then she looks annoyed.....
-
sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do....no onewas hurt, thats all that matters. maybe the idiot will have learned something from this.... 8)

the cops saw the dog offleash. I called them from my cell. he was holding his dog by the collar when they arrived. they had an AC officer with them as well, who was haranguing the guy about the leash law. no tickets were written, he was warned to not be seen with his dog offleaash anymore, and they got his vets name and number and will verify his shots, even though he had tags on. I keep my shot records, and since it was close to the house I went home and got them for the cops, so Free didnt need to be quarantined. so the only court case would be if the guy sued. I got statements frommy neighbors who saw it, and the cop is going to talk to them today as well. I asked him why he didnt ticket the guy, and he said because then you have to go to court, and if you come up against a judge who is in the BSL and "vicious dogs" group, you could lose, even tho he was breaking the law. smart cop, thought ahead. so the only way this comes to court is if he tries to sue. 8)
-
positive note..the cops are on my side.dog was offleash. they asked him if he knew the laws, he said he didnt.. "ignorance of the law is no excuse....." WOO HOO!!

walking dogs. on leash.man with Dobie offleash. Dobie runs up and attacks Laurel, who's a complete wimp. Free defends. Bit Dobie, actually took Dobie down and hurt him. bit him in the neck, he was bleeding. owner says its MY fault cuz MY dog was "aggressive"....so the police come and say it will have to be decided in COURT!!! there's a FREAKIN LEASH LAW HERE!!! this dog was offleash. I am now gathering up witnesses. this is BS... AAARRGGHHHH!!!! I HATE people...

I'd want to be a hound. I could sing whenever I wanted, and no one would care how bad it sounded...I could run around in circles and everyone would say thats normal....I could watch the world go by with just my nose...then I could lounge on the couch and nap until mom came home....

this is Eisnteins SECOND theory or Relativity....time takes longer when you spend it with relatives.... hope that cheered you up some. idiot relatives are a fact of life. you can choose your friends, but not your relatives... 8)
-
they may NEVER like each other..if they tolerate each other, you're ahead of the ball game. some never click, but they do learn to tolerate. mine dont click...but they will run around outside together, although they dont play. Free is stuck on herself, but missed Alex.I think she just acts like a bitch cuz she doesnt want to lose her "place"...not like Laurelwould take it...
-
she's jealoous of Kevin. she feels you are HERS, and resents Kevins attention. NILIF start today. Put her back in her place in your pack... she should accept ANYTHING you do, INCLUDING love Kevin. if sh doesnt she needs demotion, and NILIF will handle that... 8)
-
it can be done, with forethought and training. are you available during the day to keep an eye on things? NILIF, of course, for both dogs. If not then keep them seperated when you're not home, until they have worked out the rules on their own. If Abby is that dominant, Heinrich may just simply accept it and peace will descend on its own. it does require watching, but NO dog is more "bitchy" then Free about the dominance thing. and she adjusted to both a male dog larger than her, and now Laurel. and 2 cats. so it can be done 8)

I'd have to take them with me. pretty much we'd allbe fending for ourselves, life would no longer be running to Jewel for milk, or microwaving popcorn. there would be somevery hard times for quite a while afterwards, and I think my dogs would actually increase my chances for survival, instead of diminish them. thats my story and I'm sticking to it.... 8)
I think the site's not too shabby... I was looking at the Lab info (of course  ) and it says their origin is Newfoundland... I think it should be changed to Labrador  I think a good way to get GOOD solid info is e-mail a GOOD reputable breeder of each breed you want to post, and ask them if they would mind sending you back a bunch of info for the site. You're more likely to get the correct info from a good breeder, than random websites, or even books. A lot of dog books have different info in them, and a LOT of websites have different info too. I'm sure even comming to dogo and asking, many people would have their facts wrong, or it's just in their personal opinion. For example: reading the Lab write up, you said that they are friendly to all and not a good watch dog. Well, my pup's only PART lab, but he's a pretty good darn watch dog. I don't expect him to ATTACK anyone, if that's what you mean on the site, if so you should change it to "not a good ATTACK dog", but I don't think any dog's a good attack dog, because they shouldn't be used for that :-? Also, Friendly to all isn't a good statement for ANY breed. You have your defects in everyone, and I'm sure someone will read that on your site and think "well this just goes to proove even FURTHER that labs are the perfect family dog!" then get a dog from a petstore or a puppymill and what do ya know? The dog turns out to have some kind of behavior problem... but the site said they're friendly to all... :niewiem: I think in today's society, where many people don't do their proper research before getting a dog, that it's not right to state such stuff on a website. People will take it as a good resource. Which I'm sure the site COULD be if you make sure to get all the propper facts... Anyway, the point of my ramble is, you can't just come to some dog forum and ask for some doggy facts, and expect to get all the correct ones. I think the way to go about this is to contact good dog breeders and ask them. (of course there are many really good dog breeders HERE too though that you could get some good facts from...). But I think it's a great idea! And it look pretty good... I think a "Mutt" section should be added :D To explain to people about how while mutts aren't as suseptable to genetic disorders they can STILL get them, and also that mutts make just as good a pet as any purebred! Only difference is you can't show or breed the dog realy (well you CAN breed it, but around here it's highly frowned upon), and if you wanted to breed and show, you would get a purebred for that anyway... Ummm... maybe some info on doggy sports too? :D Like Agility and Flyball and Disc Dogs and Diving etc. etc... Another note: Has anyone e-mailed this person to tell them we're all replying here? I think she comes back posting the same thing because she expects to get an e-mail back, not a response on here...
sorry Coal, but the origin IS Newfoundland. the Lab today was originally bred from a Newfie, to a smaller, also waterproof dog, that may or may not have come from Labrador, for this specific purpose. the original Lab was bred to carry fishing nets to shore, so needed a water resisitant coat, webbed feet, and a smaller more compact size, and short hair to perform the job. they didnt become bird dogs til they were brought over to England, where it was realized that this dog could go anywhere and bring anything back, without injuring it in the process. thats where "soft Mouth" breeding started. their original purpose accounts for the thinck head, and wide chest,. to attach a fishing net to, swim it to shore and drag it to land without hurting the dog. there are still alot of inaccuracies on the page though...

she's a "mama-dog!" Free does that all the time. you cant be sick, injured, in pain or even in a bad mood. she'll pick up on it and climb in your lap lick your wounds sleep next to you whine drive off ANY interference with HER ministrations....

OK the plot thickens....I do have a babygate on my room, that Push can get under since over would be too hard, and the dogs cant go there...so he's got his haven, he just cant move superfast. now,for the twist to this whole plot. Free did it again this morning, cuz Push wanted to lay on the couch and she wont share with anyone but me or Kyle. She snapped at him (has never connected, but it still frightens me) and LAUREL, of all things, snapped all over her! I dont know if she was protecting Push, she prefers Ford of the two cats, or if she was just upset at how upset this was making ME.... Free got the shock of her life.....Laurel jumped up on the couch and got IN HER FACE, and snapped at her, without connecting, but a definite warning. the only time I have ever seen her do that was when Free steals her bone and she goes to get it back. thats only when I'm here cuz they dont get the bones when I'm not.....and if it doesnt stop immediately they both get corrected. this was all over before I even saw it coming....Free was so surprised she did NOTHING in self defense.... now today, peace appears to have descended...Push is laying on the couch, Ford is in the window, Free and Laurel are on the floor.... did I just step thru an alternate universe or something? :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:
-
thank you both. in the past, Free would "assault" Push ,cuz he would make then move, yes HE would make them move, off the rug, the couch, whererver HE wanted to be. She objected. for her objection, she would get bitten on the nose. SHE would back off. Push would have his place. is she getting even? thats what it seems like, I didnt think they were capable of it... am I a bad mom? should I have sided with her, and not Push? cats are not pack animals, I kinda let them write their own rules....
-
I know that sometimes dogs (and wolves) view sick animals in their packs as "baggage"...and will kill them, or let them die.... usually a strong pack lead can prevent it. I thought I was one. as you all know, PushyC@t is 17 1/2 years old, and failing...hanging in, but failing....Free has taken to chasing him down and snapping on him, when he so much as walks in front of her...Push has always fought back, and nailed Free smack on the nose for it in the past but cant anymore... I am now afraid. Afraid that Free will kill him. she is SOOO good about everything else, this upsets me horribly.... I am seperating them when I'm gone, Push gets my whole room all to himself. is there a way to stop this? I know his time is near, I want his passing to be gentle. NILIF is still in practice, she seems to not care. I can yell, stomp and punish, all to no avail...
