1. it will NOT bring your beloved dog back...your dog (or kid, or parent or basketball player) became what he was by the environment around him, not specifically genetics. genetically he might LOOK the same, but unless he is raised in IDENTICAL situations to the original, he will NOT act the same.....and since people tend to react to specific situations when raising dogs/kids, there is NO way to make those exact same situations happen again. genetics is good for drugs, for looks, for disease tracking...but it cant be used to create identical carbon copies of living beings, because how they turned out depends on lifes circumstances. vent over. :evilbat:
2. just love my dogs. I dont and cant do active rescue, but all of mine are cast-offs...so were unoffically rescued...
3. I have to agree, to a point, with the genetics part. I see that in my hound. she is a foxhound, but like most hunting/sporting breeds, there appears tobe two distinct classificiations....the workers, and the shows. My foxhound wouldnt win a conformation or beauty show on the best day she ever lived, yet from what I was told, she was hell-on-wheels in the field. and still can outrun the lab, who is quite fast in her own right. if you read the writeups on FH's, they specifically tell people to adopt from the "show lines" if only wanting a pet, because the energy and exercise requirements of a field dog are way too much for the average pet owner.....same thing with Labs. so if genetics is playing no part, why do we basically have two different dogs, of the same breeds? it has always been my contention that all purebred dogs should need to do both. that they should have to win at field trialing and conformation, and its also my opinion that here that isnt done, at least not with my breeds. in order to do both, I believe it will change the appearance of the dog. they will tend to look thicker, stockier (or leaner, in the FH space), less talk and more action, as it were. its only in the last few years that they have started breeding again (for show) Labs with the thick, square head. the ones prior to that had the face of Goldens, thinner and longer. thats not how a Lab is supposed to look, according to AKC standards. the head should look like a battering ram, and the otterlike tail should be able to clear a coffee table in a single sweep......yet those two traits are required for field trial... does this make sense? :o
4. ok I'll take the unpopular front..if your job requires you to move, they usually require it in the shortest amount of time possible...my place does that all the time. its money related, and either do it their way, or the highway. people dont often have any choice... my work will require an apartment, til a house can be bought, and apt and pets are often at odds. unless they had someone who could care for the dog in the meantime, it aint gonna happen. the dollar amt for the apt is figured in... please understand that people cant give up their jobs for their pets, and often, their jobs consider pets a "non-necessity"...
5. I agree that breeders nowadays seem to lack the care I knew in them when I was young....I worked for one, and he was excellent... I think a lot of the "breeders" we see today, on the net, are BYB's. the good ones dont advertise, they already have homes lined up for the pups. 8)

Pinch Collars?

some dogs require them. some do not. the very stuborn yank-you-down-the-street on a standard collar, or choke chain (which I DO NOT endorse)sometimes do well on these. now, for the UNPOPULAR side...I walk mine on no-pull harnesses. the hound doesnt need it at all, she can be walked fine on a simple leather collar with some correction. the Lab X needs it. she is a hunting dog, nose comes first, and I will NOT be dragged down the sidewalk by my dogs. I use NILIF, for everything, including walking. I AM TOP DOG. the same strategies used in the house can work on walks. this needs to be implemented EARLY in the dogs life, but it can work. it was never implemented with Free...but Laurel responds well..
7. honestly? I'm thinking hoax...that dog, with all those quills in his head, would have been blinded..and WHO, in their right mind, would take a picture of that in a sit and THEN take the dog to a vet?... I think we've been scammed...
8.
That's great!!! You and Kes are quite the team. You should write a book...The Adventures of Kes and Kat.
     good job 8)
9. OK, while I would LOVE to say "use mine"....I think Rowie wins. the only reason I say that is because everyone and their brother knows about Goldens..and seeing one on the first page may encourage them to dig deeper... can the other pictures be posted deeper into the site? once they're "hooked"? 8)
10. Zoe...Go! you loved us well, we loved you too. I know it, and you know it too. you came, you took our hearts in paw, we loved, we played, we knew, we saw.. your time had come, no dodging fate, we understand its not too late... I will rejoin you in your space, the Bridge, or where you choose your place, we'll laugh about the times we had, there will be peace, we will be glad. so go your way and know that I will not forget the times gone by. watch over me while I'm still here... your memory will bring me cheer. ~Katy~ for you Kat...do with it as you will... even if thats nothing...
11. its not unusual. I read a story (maybe it was here) about a woman who brought the dogs in to be euthanized because the court awarded them to her husband (pets are still considered property) in the divorce settlement. she came into the marriage with the dogs already there. she wanted to euth them rather than let him have them.... the vet stopped it right up front. had her sign them over to him, saying he'd keep them until he could find them homes (didnt say who's home) the called the husband and turned them over to him. (perfectly legal, the courts had awarded him the dogs. if he had refused the euth she would have taken them elsewhere to be done). he sued her, and won...
12. good job DAL...it is very hard to say goodbye, but you did the right thing.some dogs just click with kids, the endless energy, the constant attention, hugs, being carried around..... know that Stryker is happy, and Baileysmom will take good care of him.... 8)
13. I want: 1. a roll of duct tape. 2. a hard, uncomfortable chair.... 3. 5 minutes with this woman..... she would soon learn how it feels to be duct taped.....
14. I'm telling you, he KNOWS you're going!!  I dont know HOW they know it, but mine always do....even if I pack after they leave....they know days before.... 8)
15.
This is the 'zact reason I don't waste my money on bordatella vaccines, anymore. They're useless. Without fail, a couple of my dogs would get kennel cough every freakin' year, vaccine or not, and the others NEVER get it, vaccine or not. I think my affected dogs just got something for the coughing and we let the kennel cough run its course (no antibiotics... I think?). I'm not sure, but isn't the worst "threat" from kennel cough secondary infections brought on by a lot of coughing? DivOb? Kat? Someone? Then again, sleep deprivation may be talking here.
I know the thread is old, but FYI. here you CANT board a dog without the kennel cough shot. its required.....
16. there are also places now that will flavor the medicine for pets, like they do for kids. PB is one of the favorite flavors, I understand. of ourse it costs more... i usually did the back of throat rub down bit, with no issues, but also found that the cat liked his pills (antibiotics at the time) crushed in tuna...you could drown this cat if you fed him tuna while doing it....
17. I was looking stuff up about the differences between American and English Foxhound....found these: Feet--Fox-like. Pad full and hard. Well-arched toes. Strong nails STRONG???? her nails are WROUGHT IRON...I had to buy a special clipper just to trim them!!! Hips and thighs, strong and muscled, giving abundance of propelling power....propelling power? how about this? she looks QUITE propelled to me.....       she's an American Foxhound, by the way... 8)
18. have you started packing? they seem to sense when you're leaving, by movements made that arent normal, like packing....by differences in weekly regular stuff, like not shopping, things like that. mine always know when they're going to be boarded, even though I dont pack till after they're gone...they just seem to know....
19. AAARRRGGGHHHHH!!! A COUPLE "DAYS"????? what is WRONG with people????? GRRRRRRRRRRR
20. ok the whole "666-Mark of the Beast"creeped me out...I learned all that back in school, but never really thought about it.....Now ya got me thinking that the retinal scan could be the whole forehead thing.... of course, back when I was in grade school, none of this technology was even remotely available....the closest thing to a cell phone was the bricks the army carried.... :o :o :o :o :o :o
21. that just made me cry. one of my closes friends ever died from the same thing.... God needed Pat to come take care of the critters at the Bridge. :(
22. I am SOOOOO sorry Iz....I was afraid of this.... glad Mama dog is ok. Give Tina hugs and kisses for me.... :(
23.
Thanks Courtnek and K for saving me the typing !!! I've always made my kids mind and behave and listen. I do dislike other people who have kids that don't make them behave. I've just started scolding them myself......you should see the parents faces !!! I'm just waiting for them to say something to me.....I dare'em !!! :evilbat:
you and me both, and K, I agree 100%. I see too many kids who's parents just let them run amok, in restaurants, grocery stores, even at PetCo...some little 3 year old was approaching a very large and not friendly looking Great Dane. the closer he got the stiffer the Dane got, and the hair on the nape started to rise......the owner was oblivious. Just before all hell broke loose I grabbed the little guys arm and said "where's your mama honey?" he looked around the store, she was at least 20 feet away, too far for a baby IMO....he yelled "MAMA"...and she came running demanding what I was doing to her child...and I LOST it. I read her the riot act, and included the woman with the Dane for not keeping a closer eye on her dog with small kids around....It was Mama's fault, but still if I saw a small child approaching my large dog I would move away,or find mom, especially when the dog was tensed up and nape-raising.... Myabe its just me, but I can sense that at the end of the leash...probably from always having to watch Free around kids.....   I let the little guy pet Laurel, she's about as laid back as they come. He was upset I was yelling at his mom....
24. they're the same age, they're both 8. except in the bone department, they have no problems. this is their only issue. well, no, now I just thought of something...you may have solved my whole problem... I MAKE Laurel sleep in my room at night, because sometimes she has accidents in the house if I dont. when she's in my room, if has to go she will wake me up. If not, she will pee on the throw rug in the living room... I wonder if Free is feeling left out? she usually doesnt want to sleep in there, since its a small room and she'd rather stretch out, soI think I'll try rearraning the bedding in there (and remove some of the unnecessary junk) so they can both sleep in there without having to be too close.Free is a claustrophobiac (I know, I didnt believe it either)and doesnt like anything or anyone to be too close to her. she feels closed in.... thanks Canis....
25. bought rawhide dogs for dogs. only let them have bones when I am here. no bones when I'm not. one bone for Free, one for Laurel...Free steals, wants to be top dog. Mom intervenes, tells her to get OVER herself..usually works. NOT TONIGHT... mom had to step in and take ALL bones away cuz Free was being a BITCH.. Laurel was feeling very intimidated...Free is IN THE DOGHOUSE.... *sigh* sometimes, they're worse than children... :o :o :o :o :o
